Sheriff’s Office issues sex offender notificationreleasing the above information pursuant to A.R.S. 13-3825, the Community Notification on Sex Offender Law. The offender in this publication is living in Dudleyville, Arizona. Notification must be made when certain sex offenders are released from the Arizona State Prison, accepted under an interstate compact or released from the county jail back into the community. Offenders are categorized into three levels: Level One (low risk to the community), Level Two (intermediate risk to the community), and Level Three (high risk to the community). The individual who

appears on this notification has been convicted of a sex offense, which allows for community notification. He is not wanted by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office at this time. This notification is not intended to increase fear; rather it is our belief that an informed community is a safer community. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has no legal authority to direct where a sex offender may or may not live. Unless court ordered restrictions exist, this offender is constitutionally free to live wherever he chooses. Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate, or harass sex

offenders will not be tolerated. Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but because of Megan’s Law, law enforcement is now able to share this information with

you. Police caution that any use of this information to threaten, intimidate, harass or create an act against another person will result in prosecution.

Editor, San Manuel Miner: What does Mammoth Planning & Zoning do? We took one year to review the Ordinance book, you know, that one that lets you know how high your fences can be, what you can and cannot do on your property, what size and year manufactured home should you buy... Where were YOU? And then there’s our cemetery, some rules changed in favor of citizens, keeping in mind the fact that Valley View Cemetery is mentioned in tourism places as a must see. At the time arrangements were made with Public Works to move decorations for burials and replace them after services, they were OK with that, and we allowed for taller headstones, more in line with Military styles. OK? Where were YOU? P & Z agendas were always posted at both the Post Office and town hall, same as council meetings. We meet one week prior to council for a reason; should something need council’s approval for a citizen’s project, we could get it on their agenda in one week and people had their business handled efficiently...No waiting! We ALWAYS wanted public input, and on the rare occasion that someone showed up they were able to participate in the conversation about the item on the agenda. We welcomed that input. I recall speaking at least twice at councils’ “call to

public” letting everyone know Planning & Zoning meets every second Wednesday of the month, 6 p.m., at town hall. Where were YOU?? The Town of Mammoth posted notices several times, needing more P&Z commissioners...AGAIN WHERE WERE YOU? Transparency? IF someone had attended earlier meetings when Cielo was being discussed you would know who had interest in the Oracle fire district. Where were YOU? We even added a commission activity report to our agenda. Why? Because communication is key. Rebecca Beisenstein kept us up to date on the tourism and Mammoth Historical Society news, Ernest Bustamante would bring newspaper articles and legislative news pertaining to P&Z business, and I would tell about what phone calls I answered or if I assisted a citizen or business needing help getting through the planning process. Occasionally, something P&Z could act on came up and would be on the next agenda. Your P&Z commission couldn’t be more transparent! Where were YOU? One of our BEST accomplishments was not only our new agenda form BUT also the information sheet that was written to go with it. That page has everything a citizen needs to know about getting placed on the agenda and what a person needs to

bring for the meeting. Personally, I was never more than a phone call away for anyone..AND glad to help and encourage. After 8 + years for me, and the collective time of other dedicated commissioners who I really appreciated, many positive things were accomplished. People who have different ideas and can work together were more than welcome. THAT is what makes things happen: honest disagreement and civil discussion and working for what is BEST for Mammoth. In my heart I know what P&Z has accomplished and it is good!! I thank everyone including the Town Clerks, Mayor Williams and other council members. I especially THANK the people that took THEIR personal time to serve our community on the Planning & Zoning commission.

THANK YOU!! Our creed, which I hope will continue, is that property rights and individual freedoms must be upheld. The General Plan spells it out for us. Sadly, wanting input from the towns’ citizens and never getting it is my biggest disappointment. It truly hurts to see what is happening, knowing that people who really care and love this town are discouraged and burned out from infighting, disrespect and unwillingness of some to see all sides of any given issue. These folks including myself don’t have to stay here...As for my husband and me, as soon as we saw our home in ‘03, we knew this was HOME, and even though Mammoth was disheveled, I felt I could make a difference here. So I did what I could to make it better by volunteering to be a P&Z commissioner. Respectfully and sincerely,/s/ Diane Theobald

On behalf of myself and my daughter Michelle Guerrero and her family, we

take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to our family members and dearest friends, who prepared food, expressed their condolences, visited Bobby during his illness and continually prayed and sent well wishes.

Both Michelle and I were very fortunate to have Bobby in our life for the short 55

years that God gave him to us. Bobby was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Throughout Bobby’s battle with cancer, he was extremely fortunate to have the love and encouragement of many of his closest friends.

Special thanks are extended to my family who loved Bobby immensely and

continually supported him throughout his illness. Additionally, we send thanks to his Sister Carol Lopez for assisting with his care and his Sister Irene Castro for accompanying him to his treatments.

Fr. Sebastian, Fr. Wally, the Blessed Sacrament Parish and the St.

Bartholomew Parish, Alex Acosta, Lencho and Diana Polanco, Steve Chavez, Araceli Bonner, the Kubat family, La Casita, ASARCO, Pima County, UMC, and the entire Tri-Community, thank you very much for the support during the loss of our beloved Bobby.

By Seth Perkins and Araceli Curry On Saturday, May 19, 2012, at 8:30 a.m., we went to help at the Mammoth Elementary STEM School. Families and teachers volunteered their time to help set up the rain recycling system, the watering system, and the garden beds. First, we carried the materials down to the work site which was by the classrooms. Second, we brainstormed about how we should put up the gutters. After we brainstormed, the men, Robert Formo, Francisco Curry, Greg Crum, and Casey Egan, started setting up the gutters. First, they put up the brackets to hold the gutters in place every ten feet. Then, they started to put up the gutters and the plastic screen on top of the gutters to keep out the debris and nests. While the men were setting up the gutters, Laura Faulkenberry, Julie Formo, and Araceli Curry loaded up the boards in the back of Robert’s truck and took them to the work site. Araceli, Laura, and James Stewart, Riley Stewart, and Seth Perkins

Helping Our School – setting up rain recyclingSeth Perkins helped unload the boards for the planter boxes. After we did that, the Stewart family came to help, James, Tanya, Riley, and Mason and they were a big help. They brought drills and a staple gun to help build the planter boxers. After the Stewart family came, Vicente Curry and Francisco Curry

Jr. came to help with the garden boxes. When the gutters and planter boxes were all set up, we took a break and cooked some hotdogs in our solar oven. There was lots of food and drinks for everyone. After we ate, we set up the water lines that connect the rain storage tanks to

the planter boxes. When we finished at 2 p.m., we loaded our tools and the rest of the food up and headed home. On Monday, Araceli and Seth showed up to school with their heads held high because they were proud that they showed up on Saturday to help their school with a worthy cause.

Santa Fe, NM–The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public input on the draft Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIS) for the SunZia Southwest Transmission Line Project in New Mexico and Arizona. A Notice of Availability for the DEIS was published in the Federal Register on May 29, 2012. Comments about the proposed project will be accepted until August 22, 2012. SunZia Transmission, LLC, proposes to construct, operate, and maintain two parallel overhead 500 kilovolt transmission lines located on

Federal, State, and private lands from the proposed SunZia East Substation in Lincoln County, New Mexico, to the existing Pinal Central Substation in Pinal County, Arizona. The length of the transmission lines would range from 460 miles to more than 500 miles depending on which route alignment is selected. The project has the potential to add 3,000 to 4,500 megawatts of added electric capacity to the desert southwest region of the United States. The Draft EIS provides a comprehensive analysis of potential environmental

impacts that could result from project development. Release of the draft plan follows an extensive public involvement process initiated by the BLM in 2009 to identify relevant issues and concerns. “The BLM has been working with its cooperating agencies to respond to the issues raised by the public,” said Bill Merhege, BLM’s Deputy State Director for Lands and Resources. “We feel the Draft EIS provides for a balanced approach to resolving these planning issues.” The BLM will host several public meetings in Arizona

and New Mexico during a 90-day public comment period. Project specialists will be available at the meetings to provide information about the Draft EIS and to answer questions about the proposed project. All interested parties are encouraged to attend the meetings which will be announced at least 15 days prior to their scheduled date at locations to be determined. The Draft EIS, and other information about the project, is available from the project website at www.blm.gov/nm/sunzia or by contacting the BLM Project Lead Adrian Garcia at 505-954-2199.

By Rick Cato In late May some 70 Mammoth Elementary students and their teachers descended upon the New Kids’ Closet construction site to thank TB Construction (of Catalina) for facilitating an on-site science, technology, engineering, and math learning laboratory for the students. There are two things you need to know about this story right away. First, the word “descended” is used in its literal sense. The new Kids’ Closet is being built just down the hill from - in the very shadow of Mammoth Elementary. Second, as Mammoth Elementary is a designated S.T.E.M. school its curriculum emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and math, so an active construction site next door proved too great of a learning opportunity to miss. Mammoth Elementary has been a S.T.E.M. school for the past two years. In addition to its focus on the subjects of science, technology, engineering, and math, S.T.E.M. schools also emphasize the skills of critical thinking and problem

solving. S.T.E.M. schools work to prepare students for the high demand, high skill, and high wage jobs of the future. So, what did the learning lab look like? Teachers Julie Formo, Laura Falkenberry, Rosalie Sanchez, and Casey Eagan would bring their Kindergarten through sixth grade students to the construction site to study the building’s design and construction. TB Contractors co-owner Buck Thomas and site superintendent John Van Winkle would provide a tour of the facility while answering questions and demonstrating the use of tools and equipment. On one occasion Van Winkle went to the school where he met and spoke with the students. According to Van Winkle he was stumped by only one question. That question was, “How heavy is the building?” As their way of thanking TB Contractors the students prepared a signed “thank you” banner (see photo) then delivered and presented it to the crew. On hand were the teachers, Buck Thomas, John Van Winkle, and from SaddleBrooke Community

Contractors made for wonderful educators,” concluded kindergarten teacher Julie Formo. “We thank them. They fi t in

mutually supportive relationship with them continues to grow. We thank them for their kindness to our kids.”

The Comet Wrestling Club, Mammoth Mat Men and Oracle Eliminators traveled to Highland High School this past weekend to compete in the Arizona Freestyle State Championship. The Comets, Mat Men and Eliminators have been practicing and competing in weekend tournaments since February. After a long season, these boys were put to the test against the best wrestlers in Arizona.

“Every wrestler that competed came home with a state medal,” said coach Daniel Najera. “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to excel in this sport. Most of these boys have been wrestling fi ve to six days a week since February. These guys wrestled tough and represented our community with class. They did a great job all season.” The coaching staff is very proud of these young men. We would like to thank all

Iglesia de Dios“Pan DeVida”

By John Hernandez I am new to Facebook and still trying to figure it out. I do know it is good for reconnecting with old friends, making new friends, sharing ideas, political arguments, and meeting new people. I have become a part of a San Manuel School Group on Facebook. One day while reading an on line conversation between two friends and fellow San Manuel alumni I came up with this idea for a Memorial Day article. The two friends are both Vietnam War veterans and were talking about their experiences in Vietnam as

young men. I happened to glance at my calendar and saw that Memorial Day was right around the corner. I then decided that I would ask my Facebook friends from the San Manuel School Group to write about their thoughts, reflections and memories of what Memorial Day means to them. Being that most of us grew up in the 50s and 60s our lives were touched by the War in Vietnam and indirectly by our parent’s experiences during World War II or Korea. We lived in the Cold War era with the threat of Nuclear War hanging over our heads. I still remember the silly drills we

did at school of dropping to the floor, ducking our heads under our desks and covering our faces as if we would survive an atomic blast. Anyway, I asked those that responded to share a little bit about living in the Tri-Community and what they have been doing since high school. Kind of a where are they now story also. I would like to thank all of those San Manuel friends that allowed me to share their thoughts on Memorial Day with you. WAYNE WEGNER – CLASS OF 1964 I have been enjoying the emails back and forth about our beloved San Manuel and

the ongoing happenings. I am Wayne Wegner, and I graduated from the 1964 class. Seems like only yesterday. Since then I graduated from Northern Arizona University (Arizona State College at the time), but took a short break for three years, eight months, and six days (not that I was counting) to enter the U.S. Navy. Spent time in Beeville, Texas, and then ended my military career in the Philippines. I went back to NAU and finished up in 1972, where I went off to California to work at Lockheed for a couple of years utilizing my education of a BSBA with

San Manuel group shares Memorial Day thoughts

majors in Data Processing and Marketing. I then went to work for Computer Sciences Corporation for eight years, then United Telecommunications for two years, then eight more years with Businessland, Inc. It only took 18 years to burn me out on corporate politics, so off I went to Anacortes, Washington, with my wife Marlene, and we opened our own business, Play It Again Sports. This went on for 15 years, at which time I got tired of lifting 200 pound treadmills, so we moved on from Play It Again. I finished out my career as Executive Director of Skagit Habitat for Humanity, and just retired this past October. Retirement is a great job, and I recommend it to you all. Marlene and I between us have five children and eight grandchildren, all of whom live in California. Well, Washington to Arizona is a long trek, so we began our planning for getting close but not too close as to annoy the kids and grand kids. That brings me to our upcoming move back to Arizona. We purchased a home in Buckeye this past June, and once we sell our home here in Washington, the trip home begins. What prompted me to write to you was your idea of sharing ideas of what Memorial Day means to me. I grew up in Oracle from the time I was nine until I went off to San Manuel and then to NAU. My close friends back then included Ron Noseck, Ted Johnson, Ralph Ramsey, Judy Hendrickson

and Mark Bateman. Mark was a neighbor of both Ralph and Judy. Ralph, Mark and I, ironically, used to play war together, hiding from one another and taking aim with our toy guns. Little did any of us know what this meant for the future of Mark. As I recall the story, and I don’t remember now who shared this story with me, was how Mark met his final end. He did end up in Vietnam and was wounded early on I believe. He was sent back to the states for recovery, but then was mistakenly sent back to the battle front. I say mistakenly, because as I recall, once wounded in that awful war, one was not supposed to be redeployed. The rest we all know. Mark was a fine young man, and a prayer should be said for him this coming Memorial Day. Marlene and I went back to Washington D.C. on a vacation, and part of what we did was visit the Vietnam Wall. We took an imprint of Mark’s name, and I relayed stories to Marlene of our upbringing together. JOHN OLSON We also lost Major Richard Hulse who lived in San Manuel for all of his grade school years. His father was the APS manager and was transferred to Flagstaff during Richard’s freshman year, I believe. Anyway, he was a graduate of West Point and was a Huey driver and got shot down in 1967. It sure seems that the tri-city lost more than its share of young men in the war. I thank the good Lord everyday that I See Thoughts, Page 16

We lost our nephew James Lee Coker during that same time. We saw the Virtual Wall in Payson a few years ago and I saw the young men’s names from our area. God bless them all! I saw the Virtual Wall in Tucson years ago and I never forgot the feeling that came over me. Then we saw it again in Payson, it’s a time of giving thanks to those that fought for their country and lost their precious lives. Their

memory will never leave us, I think of Jamie a lot lately and I know if he was alive and young again, he would go and fight for our country again. BRENDA (RODGERS) STANLEY – CLASS OF 1967 I lived on Avenue B. My maiden name was Rodgers. My mom’s name is Mary and my Dad was Floyd … He passed away 13 years ago on the 21st of this month. I went to school from first grade and graduated from San Manuel High in 1967. I married Ron Stanley in June of 1967 and we have two girls who are both married and live in Colorado and we have five grand kids. I have a grandson that will graduate from high school in Colorado this month and will be going into the Air Force in September, so Memorial Day will hold a place in our hearts. I knew Allen Ingram and dated him for a short time. He was a great guy. The thing I remember was going to Washington, D.C., with my husband and girls and visiting

the Vietnam Memorial Wall and how overwhelming it was to see names of servicemen I knew. I took a rubbing of Allen’s name and brought it back to his parents. I remember them being so pleased with the rubbing and how much it meant to them. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me….Philippians 4:13STEPHANIE BATEMAN BENEITONE John, thank you for always remembering those who left us so tragically. Families never forget and Memorial Day is always tough. If people are interested, they can post a note on-line, on the “Virtual Wall” for Mark, Johnny, Gary, Allen or any fallen Vietnam soldier. Marcia Pappas told me about www.virtualwall.org a few years

ago. She has never forgotten Mark’s birthday on May 3. We have been so appreciative of people who still remember and share their memories

lost him. It was just going to be my sisters, our aunt and uncle, Edna Mae and Harry Hendrickson, and our cousins Judy and Jeanne Hendrickson. But Judy and Edna Mae spread the word around Oracle. We were so touched to see a line of people making their way up that dusty, rocky, cemetery road to join us. It was an amazing and meaningful day!Note: Stephanie is the younger sister of Mark Bateman. She now lives in Prescott, Arizona.REST IN PEACE:Mark Andrew Bateman, May 03, 1947 – October 03, 1967Allen Wade Ingram, December 12, 1949 – September 09, 1968Gary Everett Graves, April 10, 1948 – November 11, 1968Juan (Johnny) Manuel

Arriaga, October 07, 1938 – May 06, 1966 NOTE: Sergeant Tony Arriaga is not listed on the San Manuel High School Memorial plaque as he left school around 1959. Tony grew up in Tiger and lived in San Manuel for a while. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and while stationed in Hawaii met and married a Hawaiian girl. When he was killed, he was survived by his wife who was eight months pregnant and their three children. He is buried on the island of Oahu in Waipahu, Hawaii. Some of his family was still living in the Tri-Community at the time of his death. “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.”

ThoughtsContinued from Page 16

By John Hernandez On Wednesday, May 23, the Oracle Community Center was the scene of an open house meeting sponsored by Oracle Ridge Copper to acquaint the public with the Oracle Ridge Copper Project. Oracle Ridge Mining, LLC will operate the underground mine project. Michael Racy, Project

consultant spoke and gave an overview of the project. Some of the issues he touched upon included the plans to have the mine open by the end of 2013. The mine will employ more than 200 people when in full production with the average salary being around $65,000 a year. The life of the mine is projected at 11 years

with the possibility of a longer life if more mineral discoveries occur which can be profitable. The copper grade for the ore is 2.3 percent which is a high grade ore. Approximately 140 tons of copper concentrate would be produced per day. The public members in attendance were allowed to ask questions or make

comments by filling out a comment form before the start of the meeting. Some of the answers given for the questions follow: Traffic on the road will be along the Black Hills Mine Road and a short segment of Old Mount Lemmon Road from the mine. Five to seven highway haul trucks will make the round trip daily.

Oracle Ridge Copper hosts community meetingWorkers will be driven to and from work in vans from San Manuel to limit traffic on the road. They will hire local as much as possible. They mentioned the possibility of teaming with Central Arizona College to provide training for workers if needed. Oracle Ridge Mine, LLC is a responsible community member and gives back to the community. (Oracle Ridge recently gave $15,000 to Tri-Community non-profits). Oracle Ridge will provide jobs in the community and an economic stimulus to the area. It is expected that experienced workers from other parts of the country will stay in the local communities. The Oracle Ridge Copper Project is in the permitting and detail stage for resuming operations. Environmental impact studies are being done. Oracle Ridge Mining, LLC says they will use state of the art best available

demonstrated control technology practices including dry-stack tailings and liner systems, water reclamation, site water management, and groundwater monitoring. The underground mine is located on Marble Peak in the Catalina Mountains at an elevation of 6,400 feet. It is in Pima County. More public hearings will be held as environmental studies are completed and permits obtained. You can learn more about the mine by visiting www.oracleridgecopper.com. Questions and comments are welcome anytime. Questions and comments submitted by June 7, 2012, will be included on the summary of the public meeting. Submit your questions or comments to Melissa Anguiz, Community Outreach, 2540 North Tucson Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85716; phone: 520-327-6077, ext. 107; fax: 520-327-4687; email: [email protected].
