INTRODUCTION

The locomotive was built in 1960 by English Electric at Vulcan Foundry in Newton Le Willows, part of a small fleet of 22 locomotives specifically designed to operate express services between London Kings Cross, Edinburgh, Yorkshire and the North East. Numbered D9000 and named ‘Royal Scots Grey, after the famous Edinburgh regiment, the loco being based at the city’s Haymarket depot for the vast majority of her British Railways life. The Class were the world’s most powerful diesel when introduced and remained Britain’s highest powered diesel right up until withdrawal from British Rail service in January 1982. Luckily this famous loco was soon purchased and preserved in operational condition and has continued to provide enjoyment ever since.

55 022 was purchased by Beaver Sports in July 2004, in January 2005 the loco was moved to Barrow Hill where an extensive overhaul and restoration was completed. This included a re-skin of both the inner and outer body sides, and main generator overhauls. Additionally, TPWS and OTMR equipment was installed, and the loco was superbly painted in British Rail Blue. The overhaul was completed in August 2006 and ‘Royal Scots Grey’ worked her first trains for a few years at Barrow Hill during the DPS Doncaster Works commemorative weekend, where all 6 preserved Deltics were seen together for the first ever time. The 29th of August 2006 saw‘Royal Scots Grey’ back ready for the mainline, a test run from Barrow Hill to Newcastle and return was successfully completed, achieving speeds in excess of 100 mph in both directions and subsequently receiving mainline certification under her TOPS number 89500.

A few days later 55 022 travelled to the East Lancashire Railway in Bury. ‘Royal Scots Grey’ was immediately put to work on the E.L.R. where it always proved an extremely popular attraction. In mid September 2006 the loco made it’s first journey to another preserved railway moving north to Scotland and The Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway taking part in the railway’s diesel gala. Before ‘Royal Scots Grey’ had worked it’s first mainline tour following it’s restoration on the 23rd of September 2006 ‘RSG’ began her third age of mainline operation hauling SRPS Railtour’s hugely successful ‘Moray Mint’ from Linlithgow to Inverness, returning via Aberdeen.

55 022 then ran light engine to London to work The Railway Touring Company's 'Autumn Highlander', leaving Kings Cross on the morning of 6th October 2006, heading for Inverness, Kyle and Thurso. Disaster struck on departing Doncaster, with what's known as 'a leg out of bed' causing serious damage to the number 2 end engine. The loco continued working on the remaining power unit to Edinburgh and rejoined the train on it's return at Perth.

After arriving back at Bury it was uncertain how we would tackle this problem and return the locomotive to twin engine operation in a reasonable timescale. 2 'marine' Napier Deltic T18-37K engines were soon acquired, one of these was stripped of all non-loco components and replaced with many parts from the defective locomotive unit and many other tasks completed so we could install the ex-Norwegian Navy engine into the locomotive and continue main line 'Deltic' operation.

Following a lot of hard work by our team of volunteer helpers, we were successful in responding to the challenge and following some twin engine running at the East Lancashire Railway, 55 022 once again resumed her mainline career in October 2007. Working a repeat of the previous years 'Autumn Highlander' from Kings Cross to Perth and return, with a little run for the SRPS between Dundee and Oban added to give the loco a true test!! All was completed soundly with 'Royal Scots Grey' working regularly on mainline charters, providing enjoyment for those who relish a 50 year old legendary locomotive, until the Number 2 engine developed cylinder liner seal problems.

55 022’s Haymarket brother D9016 ‘Gordon Highlander’ was purchased in late December 2009. Long term, It is our intention to operate both locos and preserve and maintain them in the best possible condition. In the meantime, this has allowed 55 022 to return to mainline passenger charters, freight and other work and provide enjoyment once again to people throughout the UK. In the meantime 55 022 was fitted with the operational power unit from D9016, allowing a return once again to mainline passenger work.

Continuing to maintain 55 022 at it’s current North Yorkshire Moors Railway home and restore D9016 to at least the condition demanded by today's 'powers that be' is not an easy or cheap task, merchandise sales form a large part of the necessary income to repair and maintain our Deltics to these high standards and we sincerely hope that you will purchase some of our quality merchandise, knowing that you will be playing an essential part in helping us achieve these aims. We look forward to hearing from you and thank you very much!!
