Brilliant Munster winger Simon Zebo not only scored the opening try on his Six Nations debut, but more outrageously the 22-year-old back-heeled the ball up into his grasp to tee-up Cian Healy’s 24th-minute try. It was a piece of skill that drew compar- isons to French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane and Barca magician Leo Messi, that was in some part down to Zebo’s teenage years spent playing Gaelic football with St Michael’s, hurling with Blackrock and soccer with Avondale United. The former Pres Senior Cup sensation is a natural. Numerous videos have been posted on YouTube since the clash at the Millenni- um Stadium on Saturday. His magnificence was termed “Match of the Day-type stuff ” by Irish skipper Jamie Heaslip, who forced Zebo to impro- vise after a slack pass, while it featured on popular US sports website Deadspin. Thankfully for Munster fans, the Cork Con club man signed a three-year deal with the province recently, which should ward off any French clubs pursuing him in the wake of Jonathan Sexton’s impend- ing move to Racing Metro. Zebo’s father Arthur is from Martinique, a French island, while his mother Lynda hails from Leeside. His sister Jessika also has her brother’s speed, and runs with Leevale AC. It was Hull’s first league win of 2013 with Meyler on target inside 40 seconds of the kick-off. He made the most of some generous defend- ing from the home side to calmly bag the winner. Paul McShane recovered from illness to keep his place in the team as Meyler took advantage of a Millwall back-pass to run through on goal and slot past Forde. Meanwhile Bolton’s Keith Andrews took the top gong at the 23rd FAI International Football Awards in Dublin. Andrews, who is out of Wednes- day’s friendly with Poland at the Aviva Stadium, scooped the Senior International Player of the Year while Kevin Doyle’s goal against Kazakhstan during Ireland’s World Cup qualifier last September was voted the ‘Goal of the Year’. The north Cork girls now meet Killimor of Galway in next month’s decider. Milford built up a 1-10 to 0-0 lead at half-time after playing with the howl- ing wind, Regina Curtin scoring the crucial goal at 14 minutes. Then, it was batten-down-the-hatches time in the second-half as the Wexford girls fought back. But, Milford defended brilliantly to win by 1-12 to 1-7 with Killimor 2-9 to 0-12 winners over O’Donovan Rossa from Belfast in the other semi-final. Meanwhile, Cork and Kerry suffered the same fate on the opening weekend of the football league, both losing by six points on their travels. Dublin easily defeated Cork 1-18 to 2-9 at Croke Park on Saturday night and Mayo romped to 0-15 to 1-6 win over Kerry at McHale Park yesterday, holding the visitors scoreless in the second-half. The pair try to get back to winning ways next weekend, when Cork host Kildare at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday night at 7pm and Kerry are at home to the Dubs in Killarney on Sunday. See P49-53 for more.
