Christmas in the CityAfter the Thanksgiving turkey and the Black Friday buying spree

St. Louis has a lot to offer to keep that holiday spirit alive and well.

If you need to work off some turkey and pumpkin pie in order to make room for more turkey and Christmas cookies ice skating season is open at the Steinberg Skating Rink in Forest Park. Steinberg Rink is the largest outdoor ice skating rink in the Midwest offering open public skating all day, everyday. Skate over to the web site at http://www.steinbergskatingrink.com for more information.

And the Holiday Theater Season isn’t complete without paying a visit to a few old friends like Scrooge, the grinch, and the Sugar Plum Fairy.

You will find the Grinch at the Peabody Opera House where Scottrade presents Dr. Seuss’ How the grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical. The classic, whimsical tale will enchant audiences for 21 performances December 7 through December 18 for the 2011 holiday season. For information about performance times, ticket price, and all that other stuff visit the web site at www.peabodyoperahouse.com

No slouch in the mean spirit department himself, you can catch Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at The Fabulous Fox Theatre Thursday, Dec 1 through Sunday, De-cember 4. The Nebraska Theatre Caravan has been touring Charles Jones’ delight-ful adaptation of A Christmas Carol since 1979. The Caravan’s Carol, is probably the most widely produced production of Dickens’ in the nation. For all the Bah! Humbug! details visit the web at www.fabulousfox.com

You will need to be quick about meeting Mr. Scrooge as he will only be at The Fabu-lous Fox for 4 days and then Ring-a-Ding-Ding it’s the Rat Pack serving up a much different take on Christmas spirits. From December 6 to the 18 you can beat the winter blues with the holiday version of The Rat Pack Live at the Sands as Frank, Sammy and Dean heat things up for the coolest kind of holiday cheer. The trio, spirits themselves from Christmases past, is backed by a live 12-piece big band and the fabulous Burelli Sisters. For the facts on how to be in with the cool go to www.fabulousfox.com

For some holiday spirits on the classical side of the arts you can visit the Sugar Plum Fairy at the Nutcracker ballet. The Nutcracker by Saint Louis Ballet returns to the Touhill for the third year. The ballet continues to enchant audiences with spectacular dancing, special effects, and illusions. You can catch the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Mouse King, and Clara at the Touhill Performing Arts Center, University of MO-St. Louis December 16 through December 23. For ticket and performance information please visit www.stlouisballet.org/nutcracker.html

If all that cheer is too much of a good thing, then pay a visit to Santaland for one of the funniest accounts ever written on the life of a working elf at Christmas. Da-vid Sedaris shot to literary stardom with this acid-etched memoir of his seasonal career as a Macy’s elf. With sardonic and subversive wit this hilarious one-person play chronicles the perils of Christmas shopping and the insane commercialization of the Yuletide season. The Santaland Diaries is a production of Stray Dog Theater and will be performed at Tower Grove Abbey December 1 through December 15. For the usual information visit the web at www.straydogtheatre.org
