Analysis and interpretation of Frederic Rzewski’s North American Ballads

Frederic Rzewski is one of the important musicians of contemporary music, and has been active all over the
world as a composer and a pianist. In recent years, not only his works have been performed in many countries
including Japan, but also he himself has been playing vigorously as a pianist. Nevertheless, in Japan, there are
few studies concerning Rzewski and his works. In this research, a study of Rzewski’s music is conducted
focusing on one of his major piano works, "North American Ballads." The purpose of this study is to see how the
American social background is reflected upon this work, by analyzing “North American Ballads” which is
composed based on four folk songs on the theme of American labor and social issues; “Dreadful Memories,”
“Which Side are You on?” “Down by the Riverside,” and “Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues.” As a result, a process
of altering simple folk songs into complex contemporary music by utilizing composition techniques such as
cluster and counterpoint is revealed, and it becomes clear that social background behind this work is expressed
through music. Further analysis also revealed that the music expresses the criticism on hard labor and the cries
and suffering of the people living in poverty. It is expected that this study motivates further study on Rzewski in
Japan, and becomes an aid for pianists to understand and perform his music.
