1.1. Introduction:

In order to implement the training component of Dubai Cares Girls Education Project, a comprehensive training strategy was developed by ITA which is primarily based on the findings of a Baseline Assessment Study conducted in all 35 target girls’ primary schools in the four southern districts. The study focuses on learning environment, learning levels of students, teachers’ training need assessment as well as schools’ basic profiles (infrastructural needs). The study reveals that there is a dire need of enhancing the content knowledge of teachers and also reading or literacy skills of learners. It is observed that most of the teachers need to know their subjects well at the primary level which is the foundation of life long learning. A series of planning and consultative meetings by ITA’s Project Team, in-house trainers, material developers, senior faculty of the Institute for Professional Development (IPD) and the project advisor have contributed towards the conceptual framework of the strategy.

The six days’ subject based training was the first in a series of trainings for 400 teachers from 185 schools across the 4 districts. ITA also aims at integrating the updated pedagogical approaches into the subject based content knowledge so that the teachers feel more confident in extending knowledge, skills and attitudes without any gender discrimination. The primary mode of Cluster Based Training will provide possibilities to the teachers to ensure that they can share their valuable professional experiences with their colleagues as a networking cluster.

1.2. Training Objectives:

Subject based trainings will

Enhance the content knowledge of the primary school teachers in specific subjects (Mathematics, Language & Science) with upgraded pedagogical skills

Enable the teachers to develop a child friendly and quality learning environment Introduce innovative and interactive teaching learning practices at primary school level Equip the teachers for better classroom management, assessment and evaluation techniques

1.3. Training Contents:

Specifically, the following content was included for the training as per teachers’ training need assessment:

1.4. Training Methodology:

The following participatory methodologies were used by the trainers to make the training session more interactive and productive: • Brainstorming • Group work • Presentations by the trainees • Role Play • Filling of worksheets • Usage of flipcharts • Drawings/models by the participants

Prior to the training the teachers were shared the baseline achievement tests for their specific schools to highlight the weak areas that needed urgent attention, based on what students knew or did not have a good grasp on. 1.5. Learning Kits Each participant was handed over a learning kit that comprised of a subject-based manual for teachers and trainers complete with lesson plans, handouts and activity sheets. 1.6. Resource Persons for District Muzaffargarh Three subject resource persons with at least a Masters in their respective subjects were mobilized for the training who have good knowledge about this project, have worked with ITA’s Institute for Professional Development (IPD) and are well versed in its methods, principles and philosophy. English Maryam Mehdi (Faisalabad based) Science Shamim Fatima (Muzzafargarh based) Math Arif Sohail (Sahiwal based) 1.7 Views of participants

The participants appreciated the efforts and training style of trainers which comprised of group activities,

group discussion, pair work, and demonstrations.

The participants said that in English we have learned so many new things like grammar, how to enhance

the vocabulary, and how to teach the parts of speech to students. These are very informative for us

because we have no skills and knowledge about them, how to explain these topics to students. They also

shared that English is very difficult subject and need some more sessions in how to teach the subject so

that they can do a better job in their schools.

Participants requested increase in the duration of training session.

Teachers shared that they need more subject content knowledge and it should be enhanced

Teachers appreciated the new pattern for engaging students in study to enhance their interest and found

the activities really useful for creating interest of students.

Teachers acknowledged that a lot of knowledge was gained in a limited time period.

Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi Center for Education and Consciousness.

5

In the respect of Maths teachers shared that it is a very difficult subject the training taught them new

methods and techniques of math’s teaching, many ideas were gained about the history of numbers,

fractions and LCM.

Teaching science with experiments enables students to understand easily/

Teachers demanded continuous follow-up support by trainers and teams will for acquiring effective

results of training

The interactive teaching completely replaced hesitation and shyness of the participants.

Teachers praised teaching tenses with examples from common life as useful and new.

Parts of plants and flowers were practically introduced and taught in a logical way.

Practical way of introducing the concept of “Fraction” and “Zero” was very effective.

The skill and style of the trainers was friendly and the class atmosphere remained pleasant for all six

days.

1.8 Lessons Learnt:

The teachers suggested that such types of workshops should be continued to enhance the capacity of

the teachers. Teachers should be provided site base support in problematic areas.

Teachers were passionate about improving their pedagogical skills. They admitted that their major fear

was that training will be wastage of time, they will soon forget its utility.

30 participants in training is the ideal number for training session so that teachers get proper attention.

A Training center should be accessible for all teachers. The hall for training was sufficient.

These kinds of training workshops should be held in afternoon it would be feasible for the teachers to

manage their school activities as well.

Training manual should be mostly in Urdu because mostly teachers have major problem to understand

English, even though English is now compulsory

1.9 Workshop Evaluation:

. Before starting the session’s trainers took the pre-tests from each participant (Teachers) and after the

completion of the specific subject, post tests were taken to identify the difference of improvement. The

overall analysis of pre and post tests scores indicates:
