Builders are erecting a roof over the containers for the site until a new purpose-built facil- ity is completed next year. Around 40 staff are to move because of the risk to the house which has a category two listing on the historic places trust register. Hilary Exton, Clinical Ser- vices support director of Al- lied Health, says all existing clients with equipment on loan will be contacted with a detailed map of how to get to the new Allied Health Store. “We are all pleased that the plans to vacate Dal- ton House have been put into ac- tion and we continue to plan for a permanent store that will be built on Brae- mar Campus.” From now on all returns of Nelson Hospital therapy equipment, loaned to pa- tients rehabilitating in the community, will be dropped off at the new equipment store on Braemar Campus. Christmas tree festival bigger than everSally Astridge, Raewyn Wiseman, Bruce Astridge and Jim Wiseman prepare for the Christmas Tree Fes-tival. Photo: Andrew Board.

The Christmas Tree Festival at Nelson Cathedral continues to grow, with 39 trees now erected, making it the largest festival in its short history. The festival, now in its fourth year, opens today and will remain so until December 21. Organiser Jim Wiseman says the festival has grown in popularity with many community groups making and displaying their tree’s inside the cathedral. “We have some great looking trees again this year and we are expecting another huge turnout. It’s a really fun event and a way for the Ministry to give back to the city and the people of Nel-son.”Entry to the festival is free, al-though donations are gratefully accepted, with some refreshments also put on for visitors. The festi-val is open seven days from 9am until 5.30pm, for more informa-tion call 548 1008.

We did it againSunshine crown set to stay with NelsonWith less than a month to go, the sunshine race appears to be over with Nelson holding onto an unassailable lead.Contenders Blenheim and Whaka-tane are too far behind, meaning Nelson will hold onto the title it won back from Whakatane last year, unless the weather gods pull a huge upset and park a rain cloud over our sunny city for the next four weeks. The most recent data from the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, or NIWA, shows Nelson has had 2287.8 hours of sunshine this year, until the end of November.Over the same period Blenheim, in second place,

has had 2191.3 hours and Whakatane in third has had 2188.4 hours.

Nelson’s lead over Blenheim is 96.5 hours and with less than 12 possible “sunshine” hours in a day its only hope to take the title would be to erect a giant tent over Nelson.Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he is thrilled Nelson will retain its title and says it is a topic of much “ban-ter” between him and mayors from the two other challenging towns.“It’s great to see we are going to win again. Nelson is the rightful sunshine capital of New Zealand and the others are just pretenders,”

he joked. The official sunshine stats won’t be re-leased from NIWA until early January 2012.

Guide an arty successThe Nelson Arts Guide team from left; Nic Foster, Louise Allan and Annie Leather. Close to 2000 cop-ies of the guide have already been sold in just three months. Photo: Andrew Board.

Putting together the Nelson Arts Guide has been a heck of a task for three local artists, selling it hasn’t been anywhere near as difficult though. As of this week the guide has sold just under 2000 copies, almost half of the entire stock, in just three months. The guide is only published bi-annually so organisers are thrilled with the early response. “We had it released in time for the Rugby World Cup and that certainly gave us a great start,” says Nic Foster. Now the group hope to see another 1000 copies go over the summer period and have added a couple of incentives to help tempt locals into buying it.

Each guide has a jacket with a special code; text that in and the winner will take home a Kate Gold bowl. Second place will win a night’s accommodation at Warwick House and there are also t-shirts to give away. Louise Allan says she hopes people will take advantage of the promotion and buy the guides for Christmas presents. “It’s a great gift; it looks great, a nice size and is designed like a coffee table book so can hang around for some time.”The guide, featuring 66 local artists, can be found in stores all over Nelson or by visiting www.nelson artsguide.co.nz.

Up to 72 new jobs will be cre-ated in Nelson following Seal-ord’s purchase of the Independ-ent 1 fishing vessel, says the Nelson-based fishing company.Sealord has bought the vessel from Independent Fisheries and general manager of New Zealand Fish, Doug Paulin, is pleased it will continue to fish in New Zealand wa-ters.“Sealord has chartered In-dependent 1 for the past three years af-ter its return from the Arabian Gulf, and we are pleased to be able to in-crease our capacity and create new jobs by buying the vessel,” says Doug.Independent 1 is a 43 metre Frozen-at-Sea (FAS) fillet vessel that will be used to fish primar-ily for Hoki. This vessel joins a fleet that is New Zealand’s larg-est in the deep water fishing in-dustry.Crew members previously

working on Independent 1 have transferred to Sealord’s new charter vessel Ocean Dawn, opening up a range of new job opportunities in the two crews needed to man the vessel. Seal-ord is proud to be the largest employer of New Zealand crew on deep water fishing vessels.

“Sealord is committed to growing our business in Nelson. This i nve s t me nt will improve our catch flexibility and ensure we are well placed to

take advantage of the increased health of the Hoki fishery dem-onstrated by the recently an-nounced increase in quota,” says Doug. Following the completion of the sale, the vessel will fish in the Cook Strait and West Coast areas. Positions will be advertised in the local media and expressions of interest are being accepted via the Sealord website.

TUESDAY 6 December 2011

When a Nayland College school leaver couldn’t find a summer job, two of his closest friends de-cided to help him out and create a business for him.Titled BAM, Ben Alder, Alex Davies and Mitch-ell Ross, all 18, have created a laboring specialist business where they charge just $10 for common, every day jobs around the house.Whether it be mowing the lawns, washing the car or even walking the dog, they are confident they

are the cheapest option currently on the market. They will also do ‘per hour jobs’ like gutter clean-ing, gardening, window cleaning, painting and others, on negotiation.Ben says he was sick of having to shout Mitch-ell McDonalds and he had been sitting on the business venture since he was 10 years-old, after his father told him to go around the neighbour-hood seeing what jobs he could do for $10. “We were gonna give up on him because he was going to go on the dole. So we thought we’d give him one more shot and we’d try get him a job,” says

Ben. “The main idea was to get him money and a job be-cause he didn’t have one.”Ben is a full-time builder but will be the administrator for the business. Alex works around 30 hours a week as a roofer, but will also take any extra hours he can get.Ben says school leavers strug-gling to find work just aren’t looking in the right places and that they should be open to doing anything they could at their age. “There’s plenty of work out there,” he says. The trio say the business will keep going even if Mitchell picks up full-time work be-cause they know of so many others in a similar situation who could easily be called upon to help out. But they were hopeful that there would be enough interest in the community to give him enough work so he could begin flatting. “We’ll do any job you don’t want to do be-cause we know people would rather be relaxing during the summer instead of maintain-ing their property,” says Ben.Post NCEA exams, the boys had spent the last couple of days handing out flyers ad-vertising their idea to people in the community. To get one of the boys to do work at your place contact Ben on 547 3215 or 027 244 4194.

Another 30 Nelsonians were offi-cially sworn in as New Zealanders last Wednesday at a ceremony at Nelson City Council.Among the nationalities swearing allegiance to New Zealand were British, Myanmari, Italian, Romani-an, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Indian, German, Canadian and Chinese.

Exactly half of the new New Zea-landers were British. The ceremony, hosted by Nelson City mayor Aldo Miccio, takes place around six times a year. This year more than 230 people have been awarded New Zealand citizenship in Nelson. The next ceremony is due to take place on December 14.

Living her dream funeral jobGoing to a funeral is not typically a pleasant ex-perience; the grief, the pain, the memories. But for Nelson woman Lyndsay Pyers, heading off to a funeral is a dream come true.Ever since she can remember Lyndsay has want-ed to be a funeral director, and after sliding her foot in the door via a job as a receptionist, Lynd-say is now a fully qualified funer-al director and the only female in Nelson to be so.Lyndsay says she loves her job and it is better than she even thought it would be. “I just love it, I love working with the fami-lies and being a part of a really special time in their lives.”With the diploma of funeral di-recting under her belt, Lyndsay is now working towards her embalming certificate, an aspect of the job she says doesn’t worry her. “We are able to give families one last moment with their loved one by recreating what their loved one looked like.”She says she has never cried at a funeral she was directing but came close once. “I was directing a funeral for a woman I knew, we grew up next to each other so that was really hard, but once it was all over there was just me and a few of the family members and I said ‘ok, can I cry now?’ That was as close as I’ve got.”

She says working with families is a privilege and she works hard to make sure the funeral is what the family wants. “We have such a range of ser-vices now, from traditional Catholic wakes to a real celebration of someone’s life. Funerals aren’t all about grief anymore, they are also about cel-ebration.”

She says she get plenty of ques-tions at parties when people ask her what she does for a job. “People always say ‘oh, don’t you get freaked out working with dead people?’ But I don’t, it doesn’t faze me, it’s just a part of my job.”Getting the job was a milestone for Lyndsay but she didn’t go

about in a conventional way. It’s not often a candidate on a job interview ad-mits they don’t really want the job they applied for, but that’s what Lyndsay did. Applying to be a receptionist at Marsden House, she saw it as the perfect opportunity to get face-to-face with its owner and attempt to persuade him that she should in fact be employed to be a funeral direc-tor.The ploy worked and she says she couldn’t be happier with her job. “I always dreamed of being a funeral director and I’m really happy I was able to do it. It’s definitely my dream job.”

Marsden House funeral director Lyndsay Pyers is the only qualified female funeral director in Nelson after gaining her diploma recently. Photo: Andrew Board.

Front row seats for eclipse

“People always say ‘oh, don’t you get freaked

out working with dead people?’

– Lyndsay Pyers.

Set your sights on the skies this weekend, as New Zealand is set to have front row seats to a spectacular total lunar eclipse. Although the Earth experiences two lunar eclipses every year, a total lu-nar eclipse is significantly less com-mon. During a total lunar eclipse the moon passes completely into the Earth’s shadow and, due to the direct sunlight being blocked, the refracted beams make the moon appear red.Only the night side of the planet

will be able to witness this phenom-enon, with the moon entering the Earth’s outer shadow at 12.30am NZST on December 11. The most breathtaking views will be between around 3.06am and 3.57am, as it passes through the full shadow, with the moon in the deepest shadow at 3.32am, according to the Royal As-tronomical Society of New Zealand website. The next total lunar eclipse that will be visible in New Zealand will be in 2014.

Band on national stageNelson Intermediate band Nisc & Easy has claimed second prize in a competition dubbed the “younger brother” of Rockquest.Rockshop Bandquest is a new competition pitched at primary and intermediate school stu-dents. Entries for regional schools were sent via a video and the entry from Nelson Intermediate was good enough to have them judged second best in the nation, behind a band from Hutt In-termediate. The placing put them in the national finals, which was won by Kedgley Intermediate School in Papatoetoe.Members of the Nelson band auditioned for their place, with tutor Shane Hargreaves moulding the band every Friday afternoon.“They were all really keen and just love music, so

my job was just keeping them focused on what we were working on. They are all really talented,” says Shane.Founder and director of the new competition, Glenn Common, says the contest is the “younger brother” of Smokefreerockquest, and has been organised at the request of teachers who wanted a platform for their students to show off their musical skills. Glenn says the standard at the inaugural Bandquest has been consistently strong at con-tests held in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Tauranga and Napier. An online contest was held for bands where no regional final took place. All videos of the finalists are now posted at the competition website, bandquest.co.nz.

Rain washes out Christmas funThree Christmas events have been postponed until this Sunday, after rain ruined any chance of hosting them last Sunday. The Nelson City Santa Parade, Founders Toy Fair and Carols in the Garden were all called off on Sunday, but organisers of all three events say they will

still take place, same time this weekend. The shortened Santa Parade is due to start at 1pm from Sov-ereign St, making its way to Founders Heritage Park. By then the Founders Toy Fair and Christmas Carnival will be in full swing, running from 2pm to 5pm at Founders.

Carols in the Garden will also start at the same time as it was due to last Sunday, from 4pm at Gardens of the World in Hope. The three events will provide plenty of free entertainment for families this Sunday, just two weeks out from Christ-mas Day.

In our business we meet a lot of people. Business people, students, retirees, truck drivers, dance tutors, you name them, we meet them and no matter who you talk to, their mood is almost always related to the weather.Raining? You will get ‘what a horrible day’. Sunny? You will get ‘what a fantastic day’. Each response in accompanied with the appropriate frown or smile. Retailers will even tell you that sales are linked with the weather. If it’s a nice day outside, people are in a better mood are more likely to buy. And you can feel it.Walking around town on a nice sunny Nel-

son day is reasonably hard to do without a smile on your face, because everyone else is wearing one and it is infectious. So in a town that is so heavily reliant on the weather it’s probably a good thing we are on track (once again) to be crowned the sunniest place in the country.Data throughout the year had Nelson in front early on but after challenges from Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty and our dear friends in Blenheim in recent years, we didn’t want to get too cocky.

But with just 25 days of 2011 remaining and with a lead of 60 hours it is reason-ably safe to say we are heading for another win. For years the claim to be the sunni-est in the land has been treated as a bit of

a fun title, something that was nice to have, but without too much more significance. Dare I say we should

take it a bit more seriously. As the economy splutters along, New Zea-landers are increasingly looking at do-mestic options for their holidays which is a good thing, because don’t expect those

Greeks and Italians (with jobs) to be rush-ing our way. Perhaps we should make a bit more of a song and dance about our sun. I understand a mayoral challenge between Nelson and Whakatane’s mayors has been laid down with the loser walking down the main street of his town with the sign read-ing: “Nelson/Whakatane is the sunniest’.Hopefully we get a bit more national ex-posure from that and we can build further awareness about our place in the sun. After all, not only is it good for our mood but also good for business. Our Town is a fortnightly column written by Nelson Weekly editor Andrew Board.

Good thing we are on track for another sun title

The start of December not only heralded in the start of summer but also the start of Christmas festivities, including at Nelson’s most famous landmark. The Nelson Cathedral light Christ-mas tree was turned on last week and will re-main lit at night until Christmas Day.

A new Maori immersion school is set to become the first 5 star rated green building in the top of the South Island. The new school is being designed under the Green Build-ing Council’s green star rating system, with a 5 star rating considered New Zealand excellence. The region’s first all Maori language school will have fea-tures that include a rain water collection system, solar water heating, glazing walls which utilise the winter sun and the best insulation available, says David Grigor of Arrow Inter-national.Project and construction managers, Arrow International, refer to the rating system as “comprehensive,” but in reality the system guide is about as thick as three phone books. Overall it all adds up to an extremely smart building that is more efficient, productive, healthy to work in and less of a drain on natural resources.Establishment Board of Trustees chairperson Day-veen Stephens says the conservation and sustaining the Maori language go hand-in-hand, and the new school will be a reflection of that. “Care for the environment is huge in Maori culture. Looking after what is around us, how we can sustain that and grow what we already have,” says Dayveen. It’s not just the building that is scrutinised under the green star rating system, so are the materials and construction. All products that can be sourced locally will be used and those products will have a percentage of recycled material from reinforcing steel to insula-tion. An environmental manage-ment plan has been set up for the construction phase with a focus on waste minimisation. “We will set up recycling bins for metal, plaster board, plastic and

non-treated timber, which can be used for the hangi pit,” says David.Four million dollars of Ministry of Education money will fund the school, in a boost for Maori language and the local economy. Ninety per cent of the contracts have been tend-ed, which are all local. Building consent has been granted and construction is due to start on the site next to Salisbury school in early 2012.Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tuia te Matangi will be a com-posite school catering for year zero to year 13. Te Kura will educate 61 students, with all instruction in Te Reo Maori, apart from the subject of English. Students are enrolled and classes are scheduled to begin in term three next year.

The greenest of them allWork starts on region’s first ‘5 star rated’ green buildingJonathan McKeown • Not such a busy week with shipping but plenty

of activity to comment on. We had five container vessels or general cargo carriers, the tug Tuakana departed for Taranaki after her local refit, a large log ship, and five large fishing vessels in port.• Marina speed: There have been a lot of snapper fishermen in a rush to get to the bay; did you know that 5 knots is about normal walking speed. Three knots, the speed required in the marina is much less, it’s a speed that generally does not allow a wake to form behind your boat. • We have had discussions within the council last week and have agreed to invoke the Marina by-laws more sternly. These continue in force until the new bylaws replace them. Were you aware that in the current Marina by-law there is provision to fine someone speed in the marina $500. Please be warned and do the right thing, slow down.• The pilot boat was used to rescue an injured sea-man off a fishing boat this week. • It was pleasing to read the results of the Mon-day night Kayak challenge. Apparently a good time was had by all those that didn’t take themselves too seriously. New paddlers are welcome with some great expertise training to be had. Monday nights at 5.15pm at the boat ramp.• Paddle boarding: It was with a great deal of disap-pointment that I saw on the front page of the Lead-er a business advertising paddle boarding without any safety equipment mentioned or any provision for weather awareness. If you are going to go paddle boarding here watch out for the currents, the winds and the cold. Always wear the safety strap to the board. If in doubt – don’t go out.

LETTERSTO THE EDITOR

Yesterday (5 December) was International Vol-unteer Day, so we’re writing to publicly thank all St John volunteers for making such a tre-mendous contribution to local communities over the past year.Without their dedication, skills and compas-sion, St John would not be able to provide the level of ambulance and community services we currently provide. We know our volunteers often go above and beyond the call of duty, putting their commu-nities first, and we would like to acknowledge the sacrifices often made. We are delighted to join with volunteer organisations all over the world in acknowledging the vital contribution of volunteers. We would also like to thank the families, supporters and employers of our vol-unteers, whose support is vital to enabling our people to contribute so much.We wish you, your readers and your staff all the very best for Christmas, and thank you for your continued support of St John.

David Thomas,General Manager, South Island, St John.

Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne should be commended, as well as his entire council, for engaging in the process of selecting a new CEO.Any criticism of this move is simply unin-formed. It is vital that if the two councils are amalgamated, the culture and policy of Nelson council be eliminated.Nelson has made one bad decision after anoth-er, and more are in the pipeline. Nelson council is driven by narrow vested interests that do not represent the public interest. Such culture and policy are hurting the wider community. During any transitional period resulting in amalgamation of the two council staffs, there needs to be a CEO capable of representing the public interest. It is encouraging to see Tas-man moving in this direction. Tasman deserves support for its efforts. If it had failed to act, an amalgamated council would inherit the values of waste, extravagance, and undemocratic deci-sion making that plague Nelson.

Dan McGuire, Nelson.

In response to Dan McGuire’s letter, firstly I’d just like to say thank you Dan for supporting amalgamation. Secondly, I’d also like to thank you for your kind words last time we met re-garding Nelson City Council’s lowest rate rise in 20 years of 3.5 per cent. Council continues to strive towards and has had great success in delivering a prudent affordable council and still be able to deliver such events as Rugby World Cup and Trafalgar Park upgrades which must be mentioned was something Dan was opposed to council doing. However, in this case my role as Tasman and Nelson commis-sion representative is to purely highlight con-cern in the community where those who have contacted me would like to see TDC hold off until February before they appoint a CEO. By all means TDC should possibly eventually do it in February, but just wait and see what the com-mission’s findings are first.

Aldo Miccio, Representative of electors Local Government Commission.

An iconic cartoon vehicle was brought to life in Nelson last

week as part of an end of year prank.

Three building apprentices made a “Flintstone” car with wood and drums. The three

students, Ben McHaffie, Levi Norris and Andrew Hig-

gins, rolled the vehicle down Collingwood St although the

end-of-year buffoonery almost backfired as the lack of a means

to control the contraption proved an obstacle. “We had a

bit of trouble coming up with a good steering system so we de-

cided just to flag it,” says Levi. The guys pulled the stunt for a “bit of a laugh” but some mo-

torists didn’t seem too thrilled to share the road with the

crude vehicle.Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Christmas cheer not in all Nelson homes, says refuge

When Trudie Brand watched the Rugby World Cup final six weeks ago she was on the end of her seat for more than one reason.Firstly, she wanted the All Blacks to win. The second reason is a little sadder – she knew a loss would mean a massive spike in the number of domestic violence incidents against women and children across the country, including Nel-son.Trudie is the manager of the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge Service, called Nga Wahine Tamariki Pu-nanga O Whakatu, and she was on call the night of the Rugby World Cup final. She says the story of do-mestic violence spiking when the All Blacks lose is no myth. The service deals with 2327 crisis calls for support a year in Nelson and Tasman, with a staggering 323 new cases last year. Trudie says her job is often heart-breaking but the golden rule is not to judge the decisions women make, it is to support them. The service operates a confi-dential safe house, 24 hour crisis helpline and a community office with 13 part time staff and a dozen more volunteers. The service relies heavily on donations and grants, with only 46 per cent of their work cov-ered by government funding. Trudie says she has been in the role for more than three years and the worst case she has seen happened in the first few days. “It was Duane, the boy in Stoke who was killed. There is no doubt the boy died a horribly slow death, tor-tured really. But the mother was also beaten,

stripped naked and beaten in front of her son. It was a horrible situation and that was within my first few days, I remember thinking ‘what on earth have I got myself into’.”Abuse in Nelson is a regular thing says Trudie and while she acknowledges men, women and children can all be victims, she deals with wom-en and children and says the affects can be hor-rific. “People think domestic violence and im-mediately think broken bones and bruises, but most domestic violence is physiological and that can be the worst because many women end up

turning into a shell of their former selves and go into auto pilot.”She says women often make choic-es to go back to the abusive rela-tionship, which can be frustrating. “We had one lady who met her partner when she was 17 and he was beating her two or three times a day. They were on and off for many years and had many children but now she is in her forties and

thinks they have a great relationship because he only beats her a couple of times a month. That is really sad.”The refuge has a 24/7 helpline, 0800 16 33 44.Each Christmas the service endeavours to sup-port families they are working with by providing a food parcel and gifts for the woman and chil-dren. Donations are accepted at BNZ in Rich-mond or Nelson and City Fitness in Stoke. If anyone wishes to make a donation, please drop non-perishable food items or new gifts off to these locations prior to Monday December 19. If you wish to discuss how else you can assist the service please ring the Community Office on 548 3353.

Macs celebrates 30th birthdayThis week Macs beer celebrates its 30th birthday, but while the New Zealand-wide brand is no longer owned by the Nelson family that founded it, the brewery where it all started is still going strong. In December 1981 then-prime minister Robert Muldoon officially opened the Stoke brewery bearing the name of its owners, Terry and Bev McCashin.Terry, an ex All Black, farmer and publican, started thinking about building a brewery on the Koromiko farm, in Marlborough. In 1980, Terry's accountant sent him a note informing him that the Rochdale Cider Factory in Stoke was closing down and the plant would be avail-able to purchase. At the closing down sale, the vendor informed him that the building housing the equipment was being sold too. Terry walked away from the auction owning not just the plant, but the buildings as well. He then managed to convince Jim Pollit, head brewer for the famed Danish firm Carlsberg, and his wife Shelia to move to Nelson to run the brewery. Next he attained, for the first time in 30 years, a licence to brew beer. It was so long ago since anyone had applied for a brewing licence – as the market was dominated by the two main breweries Lion and DB – that no one even knew where the forms were kept.Under Jim Pollit’s guidance, the brewery began producing the first unsweetened beer brewed in New Zealand for quite some time, as well as other types which had never been seen here. The beers were made using a bottom fermenta-tion process and a yeast culture propagated eve-ry three or four weeks from the mother culture held by an outside laboratory. The major differ-ence between this process and other beers was that it did not add sugar as a fermenting agent or priming medium to give body after the beer was brewed. The fermentation medium came from

the malted barley itself. This process originates from the German philosophy which states beer should only be made from malted barley, hops, yeast and water. The effort required to start the brewery was in-creased due to the only malt company in New Zealand being jointly owned by the two brew-eries and they would not allow their malt com-pany manager to approve of a supply of the very necessary basic ingredient, malt. This meant a malt plant had to be built by the McCashin’s and a malter employed. The bottle situation was much the same. ABC bottles was the only company which supplied bottles in New Zealand at the time and was also jointly owned by the two big breweries. Bottles were already used for the Rochdale Cider, but ABC would delay deliveries of bottles and other such tactics which led Terry to source his own bottle – a squatter version of the Macs bottle of today. This unique bottle was a big part in the success of the Macs brand as it stood out from all the other bottles in bars and liquor stores. In 1999 Lion Nathan took over the brand and slowly started making staff redundant and scal-ing down operations to the point when in 2007 the beer was shipped off site to be bottled and in 2008 brewing also stopped on site and was shifted to a purpose built brewery in Wellington. From 2008 to 2009 the only occupants of the Brewery were the Lion Nathan sales reps. When the lease expired in early 2009, the Mc-Cashin family was not sure what to do with it. Dean, the oldest son of Terry and Bev, along with his wife Emma shifted to Nelson in April 2009 and re-opened the brewery. So while the Macs brand may no longer be a Nel-son one, its spiritual home is back in business. McCashin’s Brewery is back producing cider and beer 30 years after it started, albeit under a dif-ferent name.

30 YEARS AGO: McCashin's Brewery owner Terry McCashin, centre, at the opening of the brewery with prime minister Robert Muldoon, left, and head brewer Jim Pollit.

You can decide on which components you would like in your house, and the total will be added as you go on an iPad, so it won’t be an unexpected surprise at the end. If you aren’t too sure of what you would like, there are colour experts to help guide you to what will create the best finish. One thing Simon prides his company on is the dedication of his team and the quality staff that he works with. There has been a consistent core staff for more than five years, which has been added to as the business has expanded. The knowledge and experience that the team offers mean that you have the most support and

assistance through the design stages as well as the building of your home. The team that builds your house is also made up of only the best tradesmen. Around 15 team members work on the construction, which takes around twenty weeks depending on the design of the home. You won’t experience any hassle completing the entire process with Jennian Homes. They can take care of financing the project, and with Jennian Homes you have the comfort of paying as the work is completed rather than paying the entire sum in a large upfront payment. They offer house and land packages which come complete with house plans that can be altered as much or as little as you desire. The intention of Jennian Homes is to make the home building process as simple and stress free as possible. There is no chance that your home won’t be completed due to an issue with the company; once the contract is signed they have a completion guarantee. This means that if the Jennian Homes branch that you sign the contract with goes under, another branch from the national franchise will step in to make sure your dream home comes to fruition. This won’t be a problem though; with

Iconic Fairfield House is celebrating a new lease of life after recently undergoing $110,000 worth of repairs. Restored by the efforts of Friends of Old Fairfield (FOOF), those involved say they are hap-py in the knowledge that the house will continue to be enjoyed by the community for many more decades. After falling into disrepair during the 1970's, a pending demolition order spirited bold actions by Alan Stanton and friends which raised regional attention to the plight of Fairfield. From a strong community response, Friends of Old Fairfield Inc.

was formed in 1979 to restore and develop Fair-field as a community asset. Thirty two years on, FOOF continues to maintain the historic house and protect the surrounding seven acre woodland.Fairfield is owned by the people of New Zealand and is a gazetted urban reserve under the Depart-ment of Conservation. FOOF now have a lease in perpetuity gazetted by the crown. The charita-ble organisation is charged with the responsibility to restore, maintain, finance and administer the House & Reserve for the use and enjoyment of the people of Nelson and NZ.Fairfield House has just undergone a major re-

furbishment, including a new roof, replacement of rotting timber, ex-terior re-paint, re-surfacing of the wooden floors and new veran-dah decking. These were financed through grants from Lottery Envi-ronment and Heritage Fund, Can-terbury Community Trust, private donors and FOOF's fundraising events. An Open Day was held recently which gave the public an opportunity to view the refurbish-ments and to hear some of the his-tory. Fairfield House has been part of the Nelson cityscape since 1849 when the first cottage was erected and many of the trees we see today were planted. The house as we know it today was built from 1872 to 1882 and was used as a family home until 1922. Nelson College for Girls, and then Nelson College, used the house as a prep school and boarding establishment until the late 1960's. Fairfield was then left to deteriorate until the action of FOOF in 1979.Over the years Fairfield House has carved its place in the heart of the community, a vibrant homely establish-ment used for all manner of celebrations from weddings to memorial services, educa-tional, spiritual and corporate events. FOOF has developed two lovely outdoor areas, The Courtyard and The Meadow, which add to the variety of ways the facilities can be used. The seven acre wood-

land reserve provides many breath-taking views over Nelson and Tas-man Bay, criss-crossed by walking tracks popular with locals. FOOF wish to thank all who have given their energy, goodwill and financial support at this time and over the last three decades. We al-ways welcome new friends and it is the community's ongoing use of Fairfield and their financial sup-port which ensures this beauti-ful place continues to survive and thrive into another century.Visit the website at www.fairfield-nelson.org.nz for more informa-tion on Events and the History of this Nelson landmark.

The Ballroom is a wonderful natural light filled space, perfect for weddings, conferences, parties, performances or workshops.

Fairfield House is one of Nelson's most prestigious historic homes.

Got a Sport Story?

Latham Jones of Nelson College is tackled by a Kelston Boys’ High School player in the final of the BNZ Condor Sevens final in Auckland on Sunday.

Kelvin Glass hits out for the Eagles Reserves on the Number 3 Diamond at Saxton Field in the Men’s senior softball competition. The experienced Eagles side were too strong for the young but talented Waimea team. The final score was 16-4 to the Eagles Reserves over the Waimea Sonix. The Nelson Softball Association enjoys “some of the best softball facilities in New Zealand” and has a strong player base with 14 senior teams. Forty youth teams play a mix of T-Ball, Playball and fast pitch depending on the age of participants. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Nelson College scored several major upsets to make the national final of the BNZ Con-dor Sevens competition over the weekend.Nelson beat rugby powerhouses Rotorua Boys High School and Auckland Grammer in the quarter and semi-finals before losing to Kelston Boys High School 26-19 in the fi-nal.Richard Kaisia, Steven Soper and Jackson Harvey scored for Nelson College, playing against the defending champions, who were much bigger than the brave Nelson boys.Steven Soper capped off a terrific year, be-ing named in the tournament team, which will train under New Zealand seven’s super coach Gordon Tietjens. Nelson was unlucky that Steven was the only representative in the side.Coach Andrew Goodman says the tourna-

ment was a huge success for the team.“It was a great achievement but when you get to a final, you want to finish it off so there is a little disappointment there, but the boys are very proud of what they achieved.”He says the squad worked hard in the build up to the tournament.“The boys have been working pretty hard, it was their fitness and the way they played as a team that got them through to the final. As the day progressed we started to realise how competitive we were.”He says he hopes the result will flow onto next year’s 15-a-side Press Cup competition.“It shows they can compete with the best in New Zealand, hopefully it will carry over to the fifteen’s next year.”Sixteen schools qualified for the national championships.

It takes a real man to enter a wrestling ring sur-rounded by 200 die-hard Blenheim fans exhaust-ing their lungs as you are thrown around in a pair of yellow tights. But for Nelson’s Justice Sharpe and D-Mac it’s definitely worth the trip over the Whangamoa for.Rhys Walsh, aka Justice Sharpe, and Duncan McDougall, aka D-Mac, are Southern Champi-onship Wrestling’s sole performers from the Nel-son region, and they’re set to take on each other in the “King of Nelson exhibition match” at Rock ‘N’ Wrestle this Saturday at Marlborough Boys College Hall.Rhys says he originally began wrestling when he was trying to get into shape, and a friend “out of the blue” men-tioned Blenheim’s SCW.The pair were trained by Nelson’s Sam MacMillan, who recently spent three months in Canada under the tuition of former WWE wrestler Lance Storm. “He taught us absolutely everything we know. Sam is like the perfect wrestling package, not to get really weird about it, but he’s a tank, he’s got all the moves; he can do high flying, he can do power. He could man-handle me and I’m tri-ple digit weight,” says Rhys.Wrestling Marlborough fighters on their home turf means the pair are often competing against the audience too. “You go out there and you never know what you’re going to get from the crowd. You just have to go with it re-ally,” says Duncan. There had been talk about bringing a show to Nelson, but without a trailer to transport the ring, it is currently unlikely., although the duo would love a bit of home support every now and then.Rhys and Duncan have always wanted to be wrestlers since they were kids and they both have a joint admiration of WWE wrestler Chris Jericho. “Since I was a kid that’s all I wanted to do. Get-ting in to the crowd is great. Working off their boo’s, off their cheers.”

Justice Sharpe’s signature move is the sit-down spine buster, while D-Mac finishes with a bridged Indian death-lock.But they are training regularly to perfect a cata-logue of wrestling moves and techniques.Duncan says there is a lot of choice about future suitors, but it is not until you reach the United States of America that it starts paying off finan-cially. “We’re lucky because technically we’re starting at the bottom. So anywhere for us, we can go to Wellington if we’re good enough, we can go to up to Auckland if we’re good enough.”Wrestling in Auckland is televised on a local TV channel. But first they must survive each other this Saturday night at 6pm.

November has generally been a month of missed fishing weekends due to windy weather which is typi-cal for this time of year. Hopefully the weather will start to improve and looking at the long range fore-cast for this weekend, fine with light winds, boat ramps around the re-gion should see plenty of action. The water temperature is on the rise in Tasman Bay and fast approach-ing 18 degrees. If this continues the snapper will possibly start spawning in the next few weeks. There have been good snapper caught in the middle of the bay and once the fish spawn the slightly bigger fish will move in closer to shore, just in time for the holidays. Large schools of kaha-wai have been seen in the cut this week, and it would be well worth while to start trolling the Boulder Bank for kingfish from now on. Kenepuru has produced some large snapper in the last 2 weeks but fishing is

still quite patchy. The Marlborough Sounds Area opens this month for Blue Cod on December the 20th. Below are rules pertaining to this area that every-one should be aware of when fish-ing there.Marlborough Sounds Area:This area will be closed to blue cod fishing for another two weeks, until 19 December (inclusive) each year to protect the core spawning sea-son.For more information on the new rules and how they protect blue cod for future generations to enjoy, go to fish.govt.nz.

This week’s picture features Kaleb McKay with a fearsome looking barracoutta caught in the Ke-nepuru last week. Not the snapper he was hop-ing for, but a good fight all the same.

Nayland College’s Angus Riley clubs the ball en route to a stellar 111 not out against Waimea College Wizards at Greenmeadows on Satur-day. Electing to bat, Nayland College’s credible 248 runs looked reason-ably safe thanks to Angus’ power-hitting. Angus rocketed six sixes, in-cluding one far into the tennis courts. But Waimea were upbeat in their approach with the bat, despite conceding 61 extras with the ball. The stand out performance with the bat for the away side came from Sam Munslow who made 68. He was ably assisted by Fox Slotemaker 40 not out, as the Wizards pulled one out of the hat to reach their total with seven overs and four wickets to spare. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

FUN RUN: The most ringing bells and best christmas costume will win turkeys in the annual Classic Hits Jingle Bells Jog and San-ta Walk on Sunday. The annual fun run/walk which is a family favourite and sup-ports the local activities of the Heart Foun-dation starts in the carpark of the Trafalgar Centre and follows the waterfront to the beach. Whilst not everyone will want to dress up, organisers encourage all taking part to show their Christmas Spirit by wearing or car-rying a bell. Registration opens at 9.15am with judging of the costumes just prior to the 10am start. Entry fee is $5 for individu-als or $10 for a family. For more informa-tion contact 545 7112.

Round two of the ELF Super Cup wasn’t any sweeter for Nelson’s super saloon drivers.Nelson’s top two challengers, Ian Bur-son and Shane Carey, surrendered to the middle of the track before the night’s end, handing victory to the impressive Josh Boulton. Shane showed form of old as he demanded his way to the front of the 16-car field, sitting in second place during

the 25-lap thriller. But losing a wheel on lap 17 dented his chances of catching the Christchurch driver and his night was over. The final race of the night was not short on drama with four restarts keep-ing the crowd nervous. But Josh wasn’t to be denied, finishing ahead of Kane Lawson, Ray Stewart, Richie Taylor and lone Nelson survivor Mark Carey across the line.

The ELF Super Cup has three rounds remaining, in Christchurch and Dun-edin with the final scheduled round for Cromwell. Nelson speedway resumes in two week’s time on December 17 with the Xmas Xtravaganza, featuring the club championships for sidecars and su-perstocks, round two of the TQ midget champs and a hit-to-pass promotion for stockcars.

Control insect pests in your home or business with an Ecomist Auto-matic dispenser loaded with a black can of Eco-mist Insect Killer with Natural Pyrethrins. The intelligent dispenser, which has a light sensor for lower output at night, releases small amounts of natural pyrethrins (derived from the Chry-santhemum daisy) into the air. The pyrethrins flush, kill and repel most flying and crawling in-sects. Once your area is clear of insects, the regu-lar bursts of extremely fine mist form a repellent barrier that keeps insects out. Natural pyrethrins break down quickly in sunlight preventing in-secticide build-up in your home.
