ETHICS CONFERENCE

ASSIGNMENT: ETHICS CONFERENCEDUE DATE: Thursday before your assigned session date

*Please read this the week before your assigned ethics conference*Introduction:The week before your scheduled ethics conference, you should identify a potential case for discussion. A 3-4 sentence, HIPAA compliant summary of the case should be emailed to your colleagues in the clerkship as well as Drs. Frader, Stamos, Greenberg, and Higgins. The clerkship directors will choose two cases for discussion by Sunday before the Ethics Conference. We will then ask the authors of the two chosen cases to provide a more complete case description at the time of the conference.

Guidelines:

Please focus on everyday ethical issues. It does not have to be a complicated issue. Sometimes the mundane ethical dilemmas are the best. Please avoid cases involving possible child abuse or neglect, as those issues are covered elsewhere in the curriculum. You will substantially enhance the discussion by doing some background reading before meeting with the faculty to discuss the case.

Please feel free to email Dr. Frader with questions [email protected]).

Objective:The goal of the Ethics sessions is, in brief, to stimulate broader/deeper responses to everyday ethical issues than typical clinical discussion permits. We believe reflection on different ethical dimensions of cases helps students mature as clinicians. Just as is true with many pathophysiologically driven diagnostics and therapeutics, we often face unanswered and currently unanswerable moral questions about the best course. Sometimes patients, loved ones, or professionals values or preferences deserve more weight than the contributions of statistically-validated evidence or the law.

When ethical or legal consensus on an issue exists, we will try to communicate that consensus clearly. More often than not, no such agreement prevails. Challenging conventional wisdom observed on the wards or in the clinic can enrich your professional development and help you attain openness to different points of view that can enhance your effectiveness with patients, families, and colleagues.

MAIN POINTS: Ethics Conference

Everyone will attend ONE Ethics Session per block typically on a MONDAY at 12pm. See schedule.

By Thursday of the week of your Ethics session, email the group with a HIPAA compliant summary of the case with an ethical question (3-4 sentences max!). If you are emailed about presenting your case, please come prepared to give a short 1-2 minute synopsis of the case for the group.

Be On Time. Feel free to bring lunch.Date Revised: 01/21/2015
