Kia oraThis week has been very settled with staff and students going about the business of teaching and learning. Fresh in my thoughts are a Year 9 English class I stumbled across during period 5 yesterday. I went in to the class because I heard insults being traded and the class voting on who was the most insulting. The insults were strange, “Thou doth smell of putrid puke!”. The entire class were engaged, having fun and being drawn deeper into the world of Shakespeare with no resistance. I noted that some of the loveliest students at Menzies College can deliver an insult with impact (apparently I missed the first part of the lesson when they were trading compliments). I also noted how lucky they were to have a topic like Shakespeare skillfully presented to them in a way that they all enjoyed and understood.

Last week the Board of Trustees reluctantly accepted the resignation of Pete Wilkinson, our Deputy Principal. Pete has been appointed as the new Principal at Northern Southland College from the start of Term Two. Pete has been with us for five years and in that time he has worked tirelessly to improve systems and strengthen communication. He is a positive, energetic and knowledgeable teacher, administrator and leader at Menzies College. He has fought many fires, literally and figuratively and has inspired the next generation of multisport athletes, firefighters and hopefully Mathematics and Physical Education teachers. We wish Pete all the best in his new role.

Mrs Katie Keil and her husband Ryan announced the birth of their son Harry on Sunday 1 March. He weighed in at 10lb 6oz (4.8kg). Everyone is doing well!

We wish Emma McEwan from Year 10 a happy and safe holiday as she prepares to join the Koru Care trip to the Gold Coast that hopefully leaves on 29 March.

Mr Kit Hustler (Head of the Science Department) received news of a $4000 grant from Environment Southland to continue and strengthen the environmental projects in the local area.

Thank you to parents and interested members of the community for supporting our athletics sports day last Thursday. In general, students competed to the best of their ability, showed good sportsmanship and House spirit. Athletes who qualified will be competing in the Southland Athletics next Saturday.

With the warm weather we have been experiencing recently, a concern was raised about students not being allowed to wear hats at school. An amendment to the Uniform Policy will be considered at the next Board of Trustees meeting at the end of the month. In the meantime, please encourage students to wear whatever wide brimmed sun hat they may have had at previous schools for sun protection.

English DepartmentClasses are moving along nicely and our students seem to be thoroughly enjoying the programmes devised for and with them. Last week I took some time to observe three very different senior English classrooms. In each, the students were involved in meaningful learning which was pitched at their academic level. From hearing students discuss the merits ot the Bechdel Test whilst relating it to their current text, to hearing students identify misspelt words in a passage of writing; it was satisfying to observe how each teacher had understood the learning needs of the students in their class.

Year Nine and TenWith luck, parents of our Year Nine and Ten students will have read, signed and returned the permission slip and EOTC forms for our field-trip/outing to the SBS St James Theatre, to see the National Live recorded screening of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights’ Dream. We are all very excited about being able to expose our students to a second Shakespearean play - please do return those forms by Monday 9 March.

There’s also much talk in our junior classrooms around our Shakespearean Feast which is scheduled for Tuesday 7 April. Students will be required to wear Shakespearean costume and bring food which might replicate a Shakespearean feast: there’s already talk of pigs heads, goblets and candles! More information regarding this will be sent out shortly. Please do check in with your son/daughters Learning Log as we often post photos and examples of student work there, along with comments and reflections.

HPV VaccinationsToday all Year 8 students were given a form to take home which includes detailed information about the immunisation. Please complete the form, either consenting or declining the school based immunisation programme and return the form to school before Friday 13 March. The first HPV vaccine will be administered at school on Wednesday 25 March.

2020 Reporting and Communicating with HomeJunior Reports: Year 7 - 10 studentsMid Year and End of Year reports are 'grades only' and are available through the Edge parent and student portals and the Edge App when made 'live'.

Senior Reports: Year 11 - 13 studentsNCEA grades are available on the Edge App and portals from April 1 each year. Students can also see entries at www.nzqa.govt.nz.

Learning LogsAll students have a learning log which has information on all their subjects. Subject teachers will put two comments each term about student progress. Students are expected to reflect on their learning and identify what is going well and the next steps in their learning.

Attitude to LearningGrades based on the New Zealand Curriculum Key Competencies 'Managing Self' and 'Relating to Others' are published twice each term. February grades are available now on the Edge App and portals. Grades range from 1 (apprentice) to 5 (expert).

Communication between home and schoolTeachers will email home twice a term with a summary about how things are going. If you would like to know more you are welcome to email at any time, call us, or even make an appointment to see the teacher.

Edendale R.S.A. Education ScholarshipsThese scholarships have been established by the Edendale R.S.A. to assist students of the district (i.e. Edendale, Brydone, Menzies Ferry, Seaward Downs and Spurhead) or direct descendants of present or past members of the Edendale R.S.A. in the first, second or third years of tertiary study. Glenham SchoolCalling all scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians – we need your help!Some of our students will be taking part in the Wonder Project Rocket Challenge in Term 2. It’s an amazing programme designed to get young Kiwis excited about STEM – science, technology, engineering and maths. The programme pairs STEM professionals with teachers to deliver the learning and we need more volunteers to help our kids design, build and launch water rockets!

Keen to help? It only requires 1 hour a week for 6–8 weeks during Term 2. The Wonder Project team provides all training and resources, including a rocket kit, a rocket launcher and all the learning modules. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to guide young people on the Rocket Challenge. We are looking for passionate and committed professionals working in STEM fields who want to make a real difference – and inspire wonder in the minds of young people in their community. Sports DepartmentTennisOn Tuesday 25 February six keen tennis players travelled to the Waihopai Tennis Club in Invercargill to compete in the Southland Tennis Championships. This was a 'doubles' tournament and Menzies College hasn’t taken part in this tournament for some time so it was great to be able to field three teams. The teams were: Dylan Adams and Logan Andrews, Olivia Perriam and Chad Jalac, Lewis McKelvie and Ethan Stewart. In our division the teams placed fourth, fifth and sixth with Olivia and Chad gaining fourth. We faced schools from Queenstown and Te Anau as well as more local Southland schools. Mrs Lucy McKelvie (TIC Tennis)CricketCongratulations to the five Menzies College cricketers who have made Representative teams! This is a huge achievement and a testament to their commitment to this sport. Particularly we should note Braden Poyntz-Roberts (Year 10) and Noah Sutton (Year 9) who have been selected for the Southland Country U15 team. Our Year 7 and 8 team also have three Eastern Year 7-8 players, they are Oscar Waldron (Year 8), Joshua Leitch (Year 8) and Oliver McKelvie (Year 7). Well done boys!

Southland Secondary Schools TriathlonOn Friday 21 February three students from Menzies College went to the triathlon in Winton. Stanley Crump started the race by swimming 12 lengths of the pool followed by Ethan Stewart who biked seven kilometres and then Olivia Perriam finished by running two and a half kilometres. They went really well and came second out of four mixed teams receiving a silver medal for their placing. A big thank you to Mrs Yvonne Stewart for organising the students and providing transport and also to friends and family who attended the event.

METHODS OF EXPRESSING A CONCERN TO MENZIES COLLEGE

Please follow this procedure if you have a concern regarding the schooling of a family member who attends Menzies College

Essential Considerations

Please let us know early rather than let an issue

If you feel uncertain about approaching the school on your own you can bring a support person with you

Procedure

Decide—Is this A General Concern A Classroom Concern

Either

Make an appointment to see the teacher

Visit the teacher to tell them what your concern is

This works best if both parties are trying to find a

solution

Matter resolved

Or

Give an indication of what you are

concerned about

Means the teach-er can have the necessary infor-

mation available

If after this process you feel the matter needs more attention

Make an appoint-ment to see: The Principal, Deputy Principal, Assistant Principal

Appointments are important so that these people can plan to give

you the time your concern deserves

They will listen to your concerns

They may seek advice from an external agency such as STA,

PPTA, MOE, the Police or other appropriate Government Agency

They will gather information, make a decision and

communicate this back to you.

If necessary they will organise a meeting between the parties

with a trained mediator

If after this process you feel the matter

has not been resolved, you should

write to the Chairperson of the BOT setting out the

relevant details Successful Resolution of Concern with Result in
