It happened some three billion years ago. The world was a ball of fi re and smoke. Then the crust of

the globe began to cool. The tectonic plates shifted restlessly – and as they ground against each other, buckling at the edges,

mountains rose. • Miles under the surface of the earth, under tremendous pressure and heat, minerals began to crystallize

– changing form, becoming stronger. So, too, in the heart of the Karelian mountains, in what is now the municipality of Juuka in

Karelia, Finland. • Here, nature created something rare and wonderful – soapstone.

Although soapstone is an ancient discovery, its popularity is not showing any signs of waning. Quite extraordinary. It’s no wonder then, that this mysterious stone is also a pleasure to work with. This is what Tulikivi Corporation does, and soon we will have three decades of experience behind us. We manufacture Tulikivi soapstone fi replaces. They are effi cient at retaining heat, which they release slowly and evenly, allowing you to bask in their glow for an enjoyably long time. We have the most extensive range of fi replaces on the market, containing a wide selection of classic mo-dels, as well as many new, modern alternatives.

THE WHOLE WORLD IS OUR HOME

We have grown from a small family business into the world’s largest soapstone processing company. We are also the largest manufacturer of industrially produced heat-re-taining fi replaces in the world. Over half of what we produ-ce is exported, primarily to Europe and North America.

Nowadays, we quarry soapstone in Juuka, Suomussalmi and Kuhmo, which lie at the heart of Eastern Finland’s hilly country. Our company employs over 600 stoneworkers. Work on our product and collection development is a con-tinuous and full-time process.

THE CUSTOMER ALWAYS COMES FIRST

Tulikivi products and services bear the stamp of quality. We provide a fi ve-year warranty on all our fi replaces. Our company is also the fi rst fi replace manufacturer to use the ISO 9001:2000 quality system. There are already over a quarter of a million contented Tulikivi fi replace owners (with over 770 million lbs of pre-mium-quality soapstone being worked on). Our customers are also the market’s most satisfi ed, or so independent studies show.

STONE – A MATERIAL FOR THE WHOLE HOME

In addition to fi replaces, various interior decoration and

architectural stones also form part of the foundation of Tulikivi’s business. Soapstone is a handsome and durable material for fl oors, walls, bathrooms and kitchens. Tulikivi knows the tough, resilient nature of natural sto-ne. Stone stands up to time and wear and always retains its appeal. Isn’t there a place for such a material in the interior decoration of your home?

There is enough contemporary design, technology and engineering skill to be found in Tulikivi fi replaces to provide material for hundreds of pages. We would, however, like to save you time by gathering together all the fi nest points of Tulikivi’s fi replaces in this spread. If you are consider-ing buying a new fi replace, it’s worthwhile reading these lines carefully.

A TULIKIVI HEAT-RETAINING FIREPLACE IS A VERITABLE POWERHOUSE OF HEAT

Soapstone seems born for the fi replace, and Tulikivi is a magnifi cent soapstone fi replace. The magic of a heat-retaining Tulikivi fi replace is based on the excel-lent thermal conductivity and the heat retaining properties of soapstone. Together with its high specifi c gravity, these properties ensure excep-tional heating effi ciency, and that heat will be radiated for a long period of time. Firewood burns quickly and effi ciently in the fi rebox and the solid mass of the fi replace rapidly stores the heat. A couple of loads of wood are suf-fi cient to heat any room, and heat will be radiated for over 24 hours. And so a Tulikivi fi replace does not waste heat or wood like a normal stove or open fi replace, which have to be continually fed to keep the fi re burning.

THE HEAT FROM A TULIKIVI FIREPLACE IS SOFT AND GENTLE, IT DOES NOT BURN

You might not believe it, but there are different kinds of heat. The radiant heat generated by soapstone is pleasant and also effi -cient at warming the room. A Tulikivi fi replace emits heat evenly over the whole room, which remains pleasantly warm for a long time. The heat also feels lovingly soft. A Tulikivi fi replace will not burn the air leaving it dry and stuffy. On the contrary, the air will remain fresh. This is how radiant heat differs favorably from the harsh convection heat from a traditional stove. Because a Tulikivi fi replace is not short-tempered and fi ery, you can even lean against the side of the fi replace and tap your fi ngers on it. Many people remember the nostalgic scent of a wood-burning Tulikivi fi replace – it’s hard to put the feeling into words.

The features of a Tulikivi fi replace – a short introduction

The soft radiant heat of a Tulikivi fi replace spreads evenly in the whole room and gently caresses

people and objects in it with its warmth. The room temperature does not need to be high, so that the

air remains fresh and easy to breathe. The temperatures in the picture are for guidance only.

The convection heat of a traditional wood stove rises towards the ceiling and the heat is concentrated

around the stove. The heat is not retained in anything, but escapes through the chimney. The tempe-

ratures in the picture are for guidance only.

Tulikivi fi replaces are delivered to your home completely ready for use: all you need to do is light the match. Installation is carried out by an authorized Tulikivi installer who has the accuracy and precision of a watchmaker.

Tulikivi produces the most extensive col-lection of heat-retaining fi replaces on the market, including new fi replaces with clean, geometric lines from Finland’s top designers. The collection is complemented by our custom-made fi replaces.

Soft, radiant heat is emitted for a long time, heating the room with warm air that is easy to breathe.

Tall, wide glass doors create a warm am-bience. Air fl ows over the inside of the glass, keeping it clear. The doors open and close easily and silently.

Thanks to the contra-fl ow principle and the fi rebox solutions developed by Tulikivi, the energy contained in the wood is released effi ciently throughout every heating. The-refore, a Tulikivi fi replace also burns clean and its emissions comply with the world’s strictest norms.

Tulikivi’s fi replaces have ash boxes with lids, making ash removal convenient and clean – ash won’t blow everywhere.

Modern production technology, skilled stoneworkers who take pride in their work, and dozens of years of experience in ma-nufacturing fi replaces. ISO 9001 quality certifi cate. Five-year warranty.

Soapstone is a dense, heat-resistant and solid material. Soapstone also has better heat retaining and thermal conductivity properties than other stones.

At long last, the world quieted down. The sun shone on the land. Nature came to life. And then, fi nally, the

fi rst humans populated the earth. • Humans tamed fi re. And around that time, our ancestors also discovered soapstone. It

was heavier than other types of stone, yet could be carved. • Humans, always adept at fi nding uses for the earth’s resources,

fashioned magic tools, axes, and artifacts from soapstone. Around campfi res and in murky caves, these items were venerated,

as was only right and proper. After all, this mystical material kept evil spirits at bay.

Over time, humans settled down. They put down roots and started building houses. In the Nordic winter,

the snow fell waist-high. The timbers of houses froze and split open. The biting cold inexorably seeped in between the logs

and then under clothing. • Soon our ancestors invented a new use for soapstone. They needed heat- (or fi replaces) for

their houses. And soapstone was ideal! It was as if Mother Nature had designed it to be the perfect fi replace stone: it has a

phenomenal heat retention and excellent fi re resistance. • Soapstone helped our ancestors endure the subzero winter. And

so it claimed its place in the lodges and cabins of the Nordic people.

28 FIREPLACE/BAKEOVENS

If baking and cooking are close to your heart, a Tulikivi bakeoven is an almost necessary com-panion. Pies and pizzas, roasts, casseroles and cakes – everything turns out as it should. A Tulikivi bakeoven is more than just an oven. It heats the room and lends it a peaceful atmosphere. You can burn wood separately in the fi rebox of the fi replace or in the bakeoven. Thanks to its unique structure, the whole oven warms evenly from top to bottom. If you want, it can also function as a handy room divider: the fi replace opens onto the living room and the bakeoven onto the cook’s king-dom. To the pride of the master of the house and his lady’s joy – or vice versa.

Time marched on. Sometime in the late 19th century, the industrial use of soapstone began. The Art Nouveau era

was a Golden Age for the material. Our wonderful gray stone was used in facades, fl oors, columns, stairwells, and other building

structures ... • Everywhere around the world, people were interested in soapstone. At the height of its popularity, it was

transported by the ton to the royal courts of Europe. Long nurtured by Mother Nature, soapstone became quite a celebrity. •

Many of these 19th century buildings still look untouched by time – and their soapstone fi replaces are used to this day.

36 LIGHTWEIGHT FIREPLACES

Not all homes and holiday homes require a heat-retaining fi replace. Many families want a fi repla-ce primarily for those cozy evenings around the fi re and as an extra source of heat. Tulikivi’s lightweight fi replaces are suitab-le in such situations. They combine the light weight and rapid convection heat of a soaps-tone heater in a wonderful way. The clean lines are easy on the eye, and its svelte appearance sits well with modern interior decoration, too. The room seems to get larger. Tulikivi’s lightest fi replaces can also be installed on a wooden fl oor when fi tted with a base, or even on the upper fl oors of a house.

Tulikivi lightweight fi replaces

Page 37: 60 Page Brochure - Masonry Heater Store

LIGHTWEIGHT FIREPLACES 37

The heart of Tulikivi’s lightweight fi replaces is a clean-burn-ing fi rebox. Its fi re surfaces are made of fi reproof ceramic. The steel structures of the fi rebox ensure rapid heat transfer into the room from the very fi rst load. The fi replace exterior is soapstone, which slowly and pleasantly radiates retained heat into the room. Thanks to combustion air control, the fl ames will crackle for a long time, even when you use less wood. Lightweight Tulikivi fi replaces can even be installed on a combustible surface. However, the surface of the base must be made of incombustible material. For instance, the base could be a metal sheet or soapstone tiling installed so that it forms the necessary hearth extension in front and on the sides of the fi replace. Always ensure that the bottom struc-ture stands up to the weight of the fi replace. If you install the lightweight fi replace in a corner, you must have a top vent fl ue. Lightweight fi replaces are not recommended for use as primary sources of heat. Rather, they are best used for set-ting the mood and as secondary heat sources, such as in houses with fl oor heating. This makes the fi replaces suit-able for premises of different sizes (check the recommended room size from the technical specifi cations of the fi replace).

At some point in this modern world, soapstone fell by the wayside. It took a bit of time out, as it were, until

being rediscovered and embraced by a new generation. • People began to search for their roots – and, in the process, gained

a newfound respect for the warmth of fi re and natural building materials. Artifi cial materials had been all the rage, but now people

once again craved something real. • At the beginning of the 1980s, Suomen Vuolukivi Oy (now Tulikivi Corporation) made a

bold move – and reopened the soapstone quarry in Nunnanlahti, a village in Juuka, Finland. The company wanted to carry on the

tradition of soapstone fi replaces. And so it started up the industrial manufacture of heat-retaining fi replaces at full capacity.•

At around this time, an engineer came on board – and he was soon joined by an industrial designer. • The engineer was inspired

to work with this ancient natural stone and develop a soapstone fi replace that would heat today’s homes effectively while setting

a mood and pleasing the eye of the most discerning consumers. The industrial designer tackled the task of making the fi replace

look beautiful in a modern home. • They proceeded with their work scientifi cally and rigorously. And their efforts bore fruit:

the Tulikivi fi replace. Clean-burning, it absorbs heat effi ciently and radiates it slowly over a long time. • However, neither the

engineer nor the designer modifi ed the natural material used in the fi replace. Each Tulikivi fi replace is made using real soapstone

from eastern Finland. The secret behind soapstone’s wonderful capacity to store the energy of fi re is its high density. • A wise

man once said that the Tulikivi fi replace is a much greater invention than, say, a cellphone. Words for the wise.

Tulikivi’s soapstone tiles are a natural choice for cove-ring not only fl oors and walls, but also for stairs, porches and saunas. The stones don’t echo sound, stand up well to temperature changes, and they don’t absorb water in moist areas. The stone’s surface is not slippery, even when wet, and its soft touch feels good beneath bare feet. Thanks to its heat retaining properties, soapstone is the unrivalled choice for rooms with underfl oor heating.

The world of Tulikivi fi replaces includes plenty of techni-cal subtleties and generous services. More about them on the following pages.

TULIKIVI IS ALL FOR BETTER COMBUSTION

The fi rebox is the nerve center of the fi replace, affecting its entire functionality. Tulikivi has two fi rebox solutions: the Tulikivi fl at grate and the Tulikivi whirl chamber (you’ll recognize them by the accompanying symbols ). Both solutions optimize the use of the fi replace and stand up well in detailed comparisons. The fl at grate maintains a high rate of combustion ef-fi ciency: wood burns easily and cleanly at a high tempera-ture. Emissions from the fi replace also remain low. Thanks to its simple structure, the fl at grate is an easy-to-use fi rebox solution. The whirl chamber is a new invention patented by Tuli-kivi. It lengthens the time combustion gases remain in the fi re chamber, allowing combustion to be not only effi cient, but also exceptionally clean. Emissions from the fi replace remain at a fraction of the world’s strictest norms. And the new ash box solution remains nicely out of sight.

CLEAN PAPERS FROM THE AUTHORITIES

Tulikivi fi replaces have also passed through strict scree-nings carried out by testers around the world, and have fared better in these than many others.Tulikivi also continues to participate enthusiastically in both Finnish and international research and development work. At Tulikivi, tomorrow’s design is already under full steam. Tulikivi is the fi rst fi replace manufacturer to have been awarded the ISO 9001 quality certifi cate. Tulikivi fi repla-ces have passed all the industry’s most stringent safety tests. Their emission range also complies with the world’s strictest norms (including the IBR certifi cate).

Rock-solid facts

The diagram shows the amount of carbon monoxide

given off by a traditional fi replace and both the Tuli-

kivi fl at grate and Tulikivi whirl chamber. The world’s

strictest norms for emissions – those of Austria

– have been used as a baseline.

For heat-retaining fi replaces, Tulikivi is the quality leader. Our products have been tested and approved all over the world. We conti-

nuously engage in close cooperation with international research centers.

A TULIKIVI BAKEOVEN REALLY GETS THE JOB DONE

Tulikivi’s bakeovens also feature an ingenious structure. They work on a double combustion principle, making use of all the energy of the wood and lengthening the effec-tive baking time. The wood is burned in the fi rebox of the bakeoven. In-combustible fl ue gases rise with the fl ames into the upper fi re chamber. Thanks to the secondary air fl owing through the ashbox and grate, these gases also burn into usab-le heat. Finally the coals are deposited through the rear section of the fi rebox onto the grate, where they burn quickly and generate additional heat. A separate smoke gas fl ue is not required. As you can tell, today’s bakeovens are real high-tech products.

WHATEVER YOUR HEATING NEEDS, WE HAVE A HEATER TO FIT

THEM

A soapstone fi replace with a smaller mass retains less heat and cools more quickly than a large one. A larger fi replace stores more energy, which is released slowly into the room, keeping it warm for a long time. However, a Tulikivi fi replace always soundly beats a wood stove, for example, which only gives off heat for a relatively short period. Following diagrams show how heat is released from Tulikivi fi replaces when heated according to owners manual.

Tulikivi’s bakeovens retain heat for a long time. You can the-

refore make use of the oven’s heat in a variety of ways to

prepare all sorts of delicacies.

A fi replace reaches peak instantaneous heat release (11942 Btu/h) about 3 hours after heating is started. The fi replace still radiates about 50 percent of its heat output 11

hours and 25 percent 18 hours after heating has started. A bakeoven, which is twice as heavy as a fi replace, reaches peak instantaneous heat release (12624 Btu/h) about

5 hours after heating is started. The bakeoven radiates about 50 percent of its heat output 20 hours and 25 percent 31 hours after heating has started.

THE INNER LIFE OF A TULIKIVI BAKEOVEN

The Tulikivi bakeoven contains a little bit of the old and a lot of new. The basic structure of the oven respects the work of the old master craftsmen. Other manufacturers lack the heat technology developed and patented by Tuli-kivi, which represents a whole new way of thinking. Tulikivi’s bakeovens now need only the one fl ue instead of the two they used to have. Whether you burn wood in the fi rebox of the fi replace or in the bakeoven, the whole oven is sure to warm evenly from top to bottom. Burning the wood in the bakeoven ensures a long ba-king time and an even temperature.

HEAT YOUR TULIKIVI FIREPLACE WITH ELECTRICITY

You can also heat up a Tulikivi fi replace with electricity. Fi-replace versatility can also be increased by installing ele-ments in the smoke channels. You can do this with almost all Tulikivi models. You can benefi t from off-peak electricity using these elements. Heat can be stored during the night for you to enjoy next day. You can heat your fi replace with electri-city when your house is empty, or when there isn’t time to use wood. A Tulikivi fi replace’s pleasant radiant heat is always ready for you to enjoy. Heating with electricity also works in perfect harmo-ny with wood heating. You can heat your fi replace with wood, electricity or both at the same time. Convenient, isn’t it?

FLUE SOLUTIONS FROM TULIKIVI – IT’S A SNAP

When you’re in the market for a fl ue, it’s worth your while to consult a Tulikivi dealer or authorized installer. If your house doesn’t already have a fl ue, no worries. A chimney does the trick. It can also be cladded with so-apstone tiles, for instance. This turns it into an impressive decorative element – extending the look of your fi replace all the way up to the ceiling. Most Tulikivi fi replaces can also be fi tted with a top vent fl ue. This type of solution takes up less space.

HEARTH EXTENSION AND HEARTH TILES

Your handsome Tulikivi fi replace deserves a hearth exten-sion worthy of it. You can get one from Tulikivi, too. We recommend soapstone tiles for your hearth. Tiles made from natural stone sit beautifully with your fi replace and also protect against sparks.

On the club website, you will also fi nd interest-ing product offers and equipment packages, as well as a forum for comments and discussing your experiences

with other Tulikivi fi replace owners. You’re welcome to join us.

A DEFENSE OF WOOD HEATING

Wood heating is a traditional, natural and low-cost form of energy. When burnt, wood releases the same amount of carbon dioxide into nature’s carbon cycle as it does when it decays in the forest. The price of wood is also competitive compared to that of electricity and oil. Tu-likivi fi replaces also use very little wood. Many people get a fi replace as a source of extra heat – a subtle way to cut home heating costs. In order for wood to burn properly, it needs to be suf-fi ciently dry (a moisture content of 15-20%). A suitable log length is about 10-13 inches. Your wood store should be protected from moisture, and it is also a good idea to have a fl ow of air around it.
