Ramon Barba - Filipino scientist, Ramon Barba is best known for his advancements in mango farming research and tropical tree physiology. Ramon Barba invented techniques to promote crop flowering using a potassium nitrate spray. The Philippines is a leading exporter of mangoes and mango products.

Lourdes Cruz -a Filipino Biochemist,Doctor Lourdes Cruz has made scientific contributions to the biochemistry field of conotoxins, in particular the toxins of the venom of the marine snail Conus geographus. Lourdes Cruz documented the biochemical characterization of the homologous highly toxic monomeric peptides with internal disulfide bonds including: Conotoxin GI, Conotoxin GIA and Conotoxin GII. Lourdes Cruz has helped develop conotoxins for the purpose biochemical probes for examining the activities of the human brain.

Emerita De Guzman also invented tissue culture techniques for the rapid propagation of abaca and banana plants.

Fe Del Mundo- is credited with studies that lead to the invention of an improved incubator and a jaundice relieving device. She has dedicated her life to the cause of pediatrics in the Philippines.

Fe Del Mundo was born in Manila on November 27, 1911. She was the sixth of eight children. At age fifteen, Fe Del Mundo entered the University of the Philippines and received an Associate in Arts and later a medical degree with highest honors. In 1940, she received a M.A. in bacteriology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Anacleto Del Rosario-Filipino chemist, Anacleto Del Rosario won the first prize at the World Fair in Paris in 1881 for his formula for producing a pure kind of alcohol from tuba of a nipa palm. His research also led to the extraction of castor oil from a native plant called palma Christi.

Ernesto Del Rosario-Filipino chemist, Ernesto Del Rosario, is best known for his achievements in biotechnology and applied physical chemistry. He has invented methods of alcohol production from cellulosic and starchy materials, a method of continuous-flow alcohol fermentation process, and a method of yeast production from waste coconut water.

Daniel Dingel - Water-Powered Car or Water-Powered Hoax?:

Filipino inventor, Daniel Dingel designs cars that run on water. The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that Daniel Dingel built a water-fueled automobile engine as early as 1969. Dingel has no patents and many members of the science community feel that his water-powered car is a hoax. However, Daniel Dingel has demonstrated his car without any technical papers or explanation as to how it works. And if it does work, a water-powered car would be a fantastic invention.

Daniel Dingel - Claims:

Daniel Dingel claims his engine has a chamber that breaks apart water molecules to produce combustible hydrogen. Electricity from a 12-volt car battery to used to split the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen components, with the hydrogen then used to power the car engine.

Water-Based Fuels:

American inventors, Rudolf Gunnerman, Stanley Meyer and the researchers of the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory have been researching water-based fuels.

Pedro Escuro- a Filipino scientist is best known for his isolation of nine "seed board" rice varieties that provided for their commercial release.

The Pedro Escuro rice varieties are: Milpal 4, HBD-2, Azmil 26 and C-22 and C-18, C4-63, C4-137, C-168 and C-12.

Agapito Flores has been acclaimed by some as being the inventor of the first fluorescent lamp. However, the dates are all wrong for this being possible. The following points have been taken from "The History of Fluorescent Lights"

In 1857, the French physicist Alexandre E. Becquerel who had investigated the phenomena of fluorescence and phosphorescence, theorized about the building of fluorescent tubes similar to those made today.

American, Peter Cooper Hewitt (1861-1921) patented (U.S. patent 889,692) the first mercury vapor lamp in 1901. The low pressure mercury arc lamp of Peter Cooper Hewitt is the very first prototype of today's modern fluorescent lights.

Edmund Germer (1901 - 1987) who invented a high pressure vapor lamp, also invented an improved fluorescent lamp. In 1927, Edmund Germer co-patented an experimental fluorescent lamp with Friedrich Meyer and Hans Spanner.

So What Is True About Agapito Flores?

Agapito Flores was born in Guiguinto, Bulacan, Philippines on September 28, 1897. He worked as an apprentice in a machine shop and later moved to Tondo, Manila where he trained at a vocational school to become an electrician.

It has been reported that Agapito Flores received a French patent for a fluorescent bulb and that the General Electric Company bought Flores' patent rights and manufactured and sold his fluorescent bulb (making millions from it). However, all the inventors named above and more predate Agapito Flores' possible work on any fluorescent bulb.

According to Dr. Benito Vergara of the Philippine Science Heritage Center, "As far as I could learn, a certain Flores presented the idea of fluorescent light to Manuel Quezon when he became president. At that time, General Electric Co. had already presented the fluorescent light to the public."

The word yo-yo is a Tagalog word, the native language of the Philippines, and means 'come back.' In the Philippines, the yo-yo was a weapon for over 400 hundred years. Their version was large with sharp edges and studs and attached to thick twenty-foot ropes for flinging at enemies or prey. People in the United States started playing with the British Banda lore or yo-yo in the 1860s.

It was not until the 1920s that Americans first heard the word yo-yo. Pedro Flores, a Philippine immigrant, began manufacturing a toy labeled with that name. Flores became the first person to mass-produce yo-yos, at his small toy factory located in California.

Duncan saw the toy, liked it, bought the rights from Flores in 1929 and then trademarked the name Yo-Yo.

Biography of Pedro Flores

Pedro Flores was born in Vintar Ilocos Norte, Philippines. In 1915, Pedro Flores immigrated to the United State and later studied of law at the University of California Berkeley and the Hastings College of Law in San Francisco.

Pedro Flores never completed his law degree and began his yo-yo business while working as a bellboy. In 1928, Flores started his Yo-Yo Manufacturing Company in Santa Barbara. James and Daniel Stone of Los Angeles financed machinery for the mass production of yo-yos. On July 22, 1930, Pedro Flores trademark registered the name Flores Yo-Yo. Both his yo-yo factories and the trademark were later acquired by the Donald Duncan Yo-yo Company.

Francisco Fronda- is known as the Father of poultry science in the Philippines. Francisco Fronda has improved methods of production for the poultry and livestock industry. He is also the author of the book Poultry Science Production and was one of the first five people in the world to earn a doctorate in Poultry Science.

(July 4, 1931 – October 12, 1996) Amando Kapauan was a Filipino chemist who specialized in environmental chemistry. He is best known for his 1970s research on the effect of heavy metals analysis on the environment, in particular mercury in waters, fish and soil of the Philippines.

Later in his career, Amando Kapauan began inventing new chemical instrumentation. Kapauan redesigned instruments to work with desktop computers that were just starting to become popular, with the help of his best students who would write the software.

Maria Orosa-Pioneering food technologist and inventor, Maria Orosa (aka Maria Y Orosa) invented Calamansi Nip, a powdered form of Calamansi fruit which could be made into juice, invented Soyalac, a powdered preparation of soya beans, and is the proud inventor of the Orosa Palayok Oven.

She co-invented Oroval and Clarosa with her co-workers at the Bureau of Plant Industry.

Eduardo San Juan graduated from Mapua Institute of Technology. He then studied Nuclear Engineering at the University of Washington. In 1978, San Juan received one of the Ten Outstanding Men (TOM) awards in science and technology.

When my Father submitted the conceptual design for the Lunar Rover he submitted it via Brown Engineering, a company owned by Lady Bird Johnson.

During the final test demonstration to select one design from various submissions, his was the only one that worked. Thus, his design won the NASA Contract.

His overall concept and design of the Articulated Wheel System was considered brilliant. Each wheel appendage was mounted not underneath the vehicle, but were placed outside the body of the vehicle and each was motorized. Wheels could work independently of the others. It was designed to negotiate crater ingress and egress. The other vehicles did not make it into or out of the test crater.

Our Father, Eduardo San Juan, was a very positively charged creative who enjoyed a healthy sense of humor.

Gregorio Zara born in Lipa City, Batangas, is one of the best known scientists from the Philippines. In 1926, Gregorio Zara graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1927, he received his Master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan. In 1930, he graduated with a Doctorate of Physics from Sorbonne University. On September 30, 1954 Gregorio Zara's alcohol-fueled airplane engine was successfully tested and flown at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Prescillano Zamora- is best known for his research in plant anatomy-morphology and pteridophyte biology, including the taxonomy of Philippine ferns and the discovery of more fern species.

He has been a supporter of the conservation of the environment in the Phillipines and a supporter of natural resources policy research.
