YESTERDAY’S CONTEST: Worcester spotted Zach Zu-ercher an early lead and the southpaw fired seven shutout innings as the Tornadoes defeated the Jack-als 10-1 on Saturday night in front of a season-high 3,585 fans at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Jackals broke through against reliever Rick Asadoorian for their lone run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a Mike Jones RBI single. For Worcester, 3B Mark Minicozzi finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs.

THE MAN ON THE MOUND: New Jersey sends southpaw Ryan Kulik to the mound for his second start with the Jackals. In his debut, Kulik allowed four runs on 11 hits over four innings in an 8-4 loss at Newark on Tuesday. He began the 2011 season with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals where he made seven relief appearances. Kulik, a former standout at Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., was selected by the Cardinals in the eighth round of the 2008 draft. He has spent parts of three seasons at the Double-A level and advanced as high as Triple-A Memphis, where he started eight games last season.

TORNADOES TIDBITS: The Tornadoes enter the con-test at 6-9, with three of their six wins coming against the traveling New York Federals. Worcester 3B Mark Minicozzi leads the league with a .443 batting aver-age. Last season, the Jackals went just 5-11 against Worcester but still edged the Tornadoes by half a game for the final playoff spot.

WHAT A RELIEF: On Monday, Jeff Gogal was named the Pointstreak Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week. A former standout at Montclair State, the southpaw hurled 3 2/3 hitless shutout innings and notched two saves while striking out six batters in three contests during the week ending June 5.

HOME IS WHERE THE BATS ARE: The Jackals are 6-3 at home this season. They are slated to play 21 home games in June and are in the middle of a stretch where they will play 14 of 16 games at home. With last night’s season-high crowd of 3,585 fans, New Jersey has overtaken Quebec for the Can-Am League-lead in attendance at 2,288.

JACKAL BITES: The Jackals are 5-1 when scoring first... In six games against Worcester last season, Argenis Reyes batted .462 (12-for-26) with three doubles and six RBIs... New Jersey has four players that rank in the top 10 in league batting average: Reyes (3rd - .387), Mike Jones (5th - .357), Leonard

Davis (8th - .339) and Myron Leslie (9th - .333)... Davis has hit safely in seven consecutive contests, batting .483 over that stretch and raising his aver-age 127 points from .212 to .339.

ALUMNI NOTES: Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz, who pitched for New Jersey in 2009, was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers this week after begin-ning the season on the disabled list and making two appearances with Double-A Chattanooga earlier this month... Since moving from the rotation to the bullpen for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds in mid-May, Raul Valdes has turned in 11 straight scoreless outings... With a .344 average over 33 games, Chris Garcia would rank fifth in the South Atlantic League in batting, ahead of Nationals’ top prospect Bryce Harper, if Garcia had enough at-bats to qualify.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST CALL IT A COMEBACK: The Jackals showed a flair for the dramatic during the first two games of their four-game series against Rockland on June 3-4, bat-tling back from deficits of 10-0 and 7-0, respectively. In the series opener, New Jersey trailed 10-0 in the third inning before eventually falling by an 11-10 score. In game two, the Jackals spotted the Boulders a 7-0 advantage before scoring eight unanswered runs to steal an 8-7 victory. New Jersey went on to win the final two contests to take the series.

UPCOMING MILESTONES: Manager Joe Calfapietra is six wins shy of 400 regular-season victories with New Jersey. He entered the season with 386.

WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008.

OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 sea-sons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed New-ark 7-6.

FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who man-aged the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giar-raputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall En-terprises, which also owns the Jackals.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring train-ing. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yan-kees’ organization.

FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addi-tion to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodg-ers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

Little Falls, NJ – The Worcester Tornadoes spotted Zach Zuercher an early lead and the southpaw fired seven shutout innings as the Tornadoes defeated the New Jersey Jackals 10-1 on Saturday night in front of a season-high 3,585 fans at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Zuercher (3-1) allowed just four hits while striking out five batters as he improved to 5-1 in nine career starts against the Jackals. Albert Ayala pitched a perfect eighth inning before the Jackals broke through reliever Rick Asadoorian for their lone run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a Mike Jones RBI single.

The Tornadoes struck Jackals’ starter James Leverton for four runs in the top of the first inning on a Mark Mini-cozzi RBI single, a run-scoring double by Nick Salotti, and a two-run home run to right field off the bat of Alex Tr-ezza. Worcester tacked on a pair of third-inning runs when Tony Patane flared a two-out, two-run single to right field to make it 6-0. A sixth-inning two-run double by Minicozzi extended the Worcester lead to 8-0 before the Tornadoes capped their scoring in the ninth inning when Minicozzi homered and Patane lifted a sacrifice fly.

Minicozzi, who entered the night with a league-best .411 batting average, finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Worcester first baseman Chris Colabello and designated hitter Nick Salotti each contributed three hits. For New Jersey, Jones went 2-for-4 with a double while second baseman Argenis Reyes went 2-for-3.

Leverton (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits over four innings. Mike Pontius followed with two innings of relief and Bobby Gagg pitched the final three frames.
