OB-01 Mechanical WatchStainless steel CNC milled case & case back. Hand cut sapphire crystal glass over heat coloured blue titanium dial, which is fly press punched and hand filed, with hour markers blind drilled by hand. Rodium plated hands. Silver steel rods – annealed to soften for dieing, then tempered to reharden. All connecting parts hand tapped. Dial and movement are hand decorated in sunburst pattern.

Advanced Prototyping (2017)
DevelopmentThe aim was to create a unique artisan watch within the time frame & manufacturing constraints of a 1 semester course. The ideation & form development focussed on creating a unique, uni-lugged designed, solding design and manufacturing problems solving form and materials to make the design do-able and functional, while maintaining elements of sleek design with futuristic underpinnings.

Prototype cases were initally made from the softer metal, aluminium. The CNC Haas could mill cases faster because the stepdown could be higher thanks to that characteristic.

Gather Hygge coffee setHygge is a Danish word that describes feelings of cosiness and contentment and it is often associated with being together with family and friends in a meaningful way. This project attempts to embody hygge characteristics into a product to encourage people to spend time together. I designed a coffee set taking inspiration from seeds in a pod, which beautifully captures notions of hygge - togetherness and belonging – in the saucers elegantly gathered together with the ceramic pieces cradled within them.

Honours Project (2017)

DevelopmentBeginning with paper cups and moving to sketching, air dy clay and 3D printing, the development and refinement stages were vital because of the making time of ceramics. I could not afford to make any errors, so whereas ceramicists would make refinements after high firing with new molds and pieces, I had to precisely calculate shrinkage and form through sketching, CAD and prototyping.

ImplementationCeramics is not an easy medium to work with, especailly when there are multiple pieces that need to sit flush together. The position of where the pieces are put in the kiln can change the shrinkage ever so slightly, however the main problem I had was warping - the bigger the piece, the more likely it is to warp in the heat of the kiln. These were issues were easily overcome though, as I made multiple casts of each piece to insure nothing could go wrong.

IdeationWith limited jewellery workshop tools at an industrial design workshop, not all shapes and forms were able to be easily created with the experience we had. A pressed metal shape was recommended for the final. The bottom right sketch is what lead to the final design.

Ulnar Nerve Palsy Lemon Squeezer Sketches
Lemon SqueezerA user centred design task I completed in first year was a lemon squeezer for people who suffer with Ulnar Nerve Pulsy. U.N.P is the loss of sensation from shoulder to the fingers from damage to the Ulnar Nerve. The Lemon Squeezer is designed to allow people who suffer with this or any other arm release problems to squeeze juice from fruit with one arm.
Rideworx HandguardDesigning a new and futuristic MX (moto cross) hand guard for Rideworx, who are the company who produce Barkbusters Handguards. The process begun with research about motorbikes and handguards, that lead to the different sketching phases and finally to photoshop for the final render.

Hyker Lean and GreenThe Hyker was created on a strict brief and set of specifications. Maximum size of 2900mm x 1700mm, powered by a Yahama WR450 bike engine. The car is a lean and grean off-road hire car for people who want to get out and explore.

Micro DesigningDesigning a car requires attention to shape and proportions. This was especially apparent when designing a micro car. The micro size of the car distorts the proportions, so it looks odd if not done correctly through pages and pages of development and refinement. A small sample of sketches to the right show the process of refining to the final choice of car - A micro off-roader.

Human Factors and Technical PackageTechnical drawings displaying both the top, front, side and orthogonal views of the car, as well as the human factors that includes passenger seating, angle of seating, engine location and boot space. Measurements are also included, along with angle of approach / departure and visibility angle for the users.

Transport Design
The latter part of the project, in a team of 4 a 1:1 model car was made from a mixture of our 4 designs. The outcome was a cloth wrapped, laser cut plywood and cnc foam Micro off-roader called Kakado.

QR Code PendantsThese QR coded items can be worn as pendants or attached to belts or clothing, and they allow the carer of a wandering or lost dementia sufferer to be quickly and easily contacted. This increases dementia sufferers’ autonomy and independence and eliminates the ethical problems associated with electronic monitoring.

Start-Up ArubixsArubixs was a San Fransisco based telecommunications start up company that was devloping a flexible OLED smart phone that could slide into a cradle on the wrist. I joined at the end of my 1st year of university and I was the designer. During my time there I provided a range of services from minor engineering of the cradle and case, all the designing & CAD work and the mould making and animating.

Renders For Industry PitchesRenders are a compelling method of conveying a concept to consumers, manufactures and stakeholders, by assisting them to visualise the product more effectively than sketches.
