The Giltinan 2013 has a “red hot local” Australian contingent with a diversity of age and experience and a wealth of talent.

Obviously, defending champion Seve Jarvin (Gotta Love It 7) and 2006, 2007 winner Michael Coxon (Thurlow Fisher Lawyers) will share honours for pre series favourtism, but the challeng-ers for top honours come with

some great sailing records.

Major local challengers are expected to be past champion John Winning (Yandoo), four times Inter-dominion

12ft Skiff champion Nick Press (Smeg), former Australian champion Mi-cah Lane (Appliancesonline.com.au), Jack Macartney (Coopers-Rag & Famish

Hotel, twice Australian 16ft Skiff champion James Dorron (Mojo Wine) and Shane Smith (Winning Appliances) from the Brisbane fleet.

Olympic 470 Gold Medalist Malcolm Page (2008 Beijing and 2012 London) is back in the fleet with a strong chance in The Kitchen Maker while Alexandra South be-comes the first skipper of an all-girl team in a Giltinan Championship (Katie Love of the US will share the honour with Alex).

BUILDING HIGH TECH 18FT SKIFFSVan Munster Boatbuilders

Construction of the modern 18ft Skiff hull is obviously critical to its performance and longevity as a highly competitive racing machine, so the building of these high-tech hulls can only be assigned to the talents of a top class boat builder.

Van Munster Boats, at Morisset (north of Sydney), has been the registered builder of all18ft Skiff hulls in Australia for the past seven years.

To give some idea of how the task is undertaken, Brett Van Munster gives a simplified explanation of what is a highly technical and very precise building process.

“Our challenge is to build boats which are very light yet strong enough to meet the high demands of 18ft Skiff Racing”.

“We only have a small team but we’ve got the expertise to work with the same materials as those used in Formula One Racing and the aircraft industry”.

“Our first task is to source the pre-impregnated carbon fibre material (to our specifications) from the U.S. and have it shipped to Australia under refrigerated conditions”.

“We also purchase 1cm (width) Kevlar Nomex honeycomb paper, which is used as the core material”.

“The hull and deck are then constructed from the Kevlar Nomex honeycomb paper, which is sandwiched between two layers of the pre-preg carbon fibre”.

“This carbon fibre is a little more sophisticated but essentially the same as pioneered by Iain Murray and John Mc Conaghy back in the late 1970s”.

“Laminating is done in an air conditioned, climate con-trolled environment and processing of the boats and the pre-pregs is a little more refined – but, again, essentially the same as Murray and Mc Conaghy used”.

“Once the hull and deck have been laminated in their moulds they are individually baked in a custom built oven at more than 80 degrees celcius for 14 hours”.

“This done, the internal structure and framing are set up inside the hull and both are ‘trimmed up then fitted to each

Page 13: 64th JJ GILTINAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 - Scuttlebutt Sailing Newsarchive.sailingscuttlebutt.com/news/13/Giltinan2013Programme.pdf · 64th JJ GILTINAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 RACE DATES Friday

other”.

“The deck is glued onto the hull in a very precise operation then placed in a holding jig where maximum force is ap-plied to ensure a minimum use of glue. This is a complex and critical procedure which requires extreme care as it basically holds the entire boat together”.

“It is important that the finished product is not only light

but also important that every single piece of carbon is in the right spot. Carbon is an extremely strong material and doesn’t take much to hold the boat together, but if you get it in the wrong spot it also doesn’t take much for it to blow up”.

“The final step is to prepare and spray paint the underside and deck of the boat to the smoothest possible race quality finish”.

“This is a lot harder and time consuming than it sounds as during this process we are continually conscious of keeping weight to a bare minimum as the boat receives an undercoat and three high gloss coats”.

“Weight is critical in 18ft Skiff Racing. We produce the bare hull shell at about 20kg and the overall weight of the boat before fittings are added is approximately 62.5kg.

By the time it’s ready to race the weight is around 170kg, which gives some idea of what goes onto an 18 in racing condition”.

Van Munster Boats also build the centerboard and rudder from carbon composites.

The United States have put together an exciting group of three teams for the championship with a mixture of experi-ence, youth and female competitors.

Obviously, 2002, 2003 Giltinan champion Howie Hamlin (CST Composites) leads the stand out team for the USA as he has long been one of the best 18ft Skiff competitors in the world.

Aside from his two Giltinan victories, Howie has won the annual International Regatta in San Francisco on no less than six times and the European Championship on four occasions.

He has Matt McKinlay back with him again, but his other regular crewman Mike Martin was unable to make it this time. Howie managed to get Dave Gibson (one of Australia’s most experienced 18ft Skiff sailors) for the championship and so his challenge will certainly be as strong as ever.

Howie has been a driving force behind the US 18ft Skiffs, along with Chad Freitas, who has organized the two new teams at the Giltinan 2013.

Mike Radziejowski heads a young team on a locally-chartered skiff.

This group represents the ‘American Youth Sailing Force’ which was officially selected by Oracle Team USA to repre-sent the City of San Francisco in the 2013 Youth Americas Cup.

Chad’s Angels, Katie Love, Christine Neville and Emma Shaw have been competing at the International Regatta on San Francisco Bay and have also chartered a local skiff (from Brisbane) for the championship.

The team has been looking to test itself on Sydney Harbour and has the added incentive of having direct competition with another all-female team.

The two British teams, ‘The Black Dog’ and ‘Pica’ are both strong crews and will be a force in the Giltinan 2013 Cham-pionship.

Jarrod Simpson has been a good, regular competitor at the Giltinan and this year has assembled a top class crew for the challenge.

Jarrod is a world class sailor with 2nd places in many regattas, including Fireball Worlds, Olympic Trials in both 470 and Tornado classes and 14 worlds.

Sheet hand on ‘The Black Dog’ is three-times Giltinan champion Euan McNicol, with Grant Rollerson (3rd in 2011 at the Giltinan) in the bow.

Joining this highly experienced team is a rookie crew at the Giltinan (Pica) but a crew which has been the best UK/Eu-ropean team for the past three years.

Lack of experience on Sydney Harbour will be a disadvantage to this team but their record against top Australian teams at recent European Championships suggests they will be strong competitors in the skiff previously sampaigned by Rob Greenhalh at the 2010 Giltinan.

NZ

Alex Vallings (C-Tech), Graham Catley (Maersk Lines) and David McDiarmid (Yamaha) all have new Van Munster built hulls with high quality rigging and sails and will definitely be top challengers for the 2013 title.

Alex Vallings’ C-Tech, which won the Mark Foy Trophy (Auckland) and In-ternational Regatta at San Francisco, will also have Peter Burling, the 2012 London Olympic 49er Silver Medalist in the team which could become the first New Zealand winner since Terry McDell’s Travelodge New Zealand in 1974.
