65-45-12 Ductile Iron contains nodular graphite in a matrix of ferrite with small
amounts of pearlite. The ferritic structure gives excellent machinability with good
surface finishes along with optimal impact strengths, fatigue properties, electrical
conductivity and high magnetic permeability. This iron has approximately the
same tensile and yield strengths as AISI 1020 Steel in the as-rolled condition. This
specification conforms to ASTM A536 grade 65-45-12. The microstructure consists
of Types I & II nodular graphite as defined in ASTM A247. The matrix is ferrite with
approximately 5-25% pearlite. The “rim” will have a higher nodular count and will be
mostly ferrite. Chill carbides will be less than 5% in any field at 100x and will be well
dispersed.

Heat Treat Response
65-45-12 Ductile Iron can be oil quench hardened from 1600° F (885° C) to Rockwell C 50 minimum on the outside of the bar. Hardness in the core will be less than the hardness on the outside surfaces. This grade also responds well to surface hardening methods such as flame or induction heat treating. It is well suited for austempering because of the low residual alloy content, and the highly ferritic matrix provides predictable growth with minimal heat distortion.

C 172 Copper Beryllium is the most specified copper beryllium and is available
at Morgan Bronze in both Solution and Precipitation Heat Treated tubing as well as
Solution Heat Treated Rod and Bar. In its age hardened condition C 172 attains the
highest strength and hardness of any commercial copper based alloy. The ultimate
tensile strength can exceed 200 ksi and the hardness approaches Rockwell C45. This
alloy is used in bearings and pivoting members for aircraft landing gear, bushings and
washers for tri-cone drilling bits, pressure housings for magnetometers and other
instruments, as well as resistance welding applications.

C 932 Bearing Bronze is our most popular alloy. It is a general purpose bearing
alloy possessing good anti-friction properties, ample strength and hardness, adequate
ductility and excellent machinability. It is used as bearings, bushings, light duty gears
and sprockets, impellers, wear strips, plates, automotive fittings and washers. It is
used extensively in pumps, cylinders, machine tools, earth moving machinery and a
myriad of general purpose applications.

C 954 Aluminum Bronze is the most popular of Aluminum Bronze alloys, providing
high tensile and yield strength, good ductility, weldability and machinability, excellent
resistance to wear, fatigue and deformation under shock and load. It exhibits
excellent corrosion resistant properties. This alloy and most of the alloys in this
family provide flexible mechanical properties with heat treatment and small additions
of nickel. It’s used as gears, worm wheels, bushings, bearings, wear strips, valve
bodies, valve seats and valve guides in chemical, marine, aircraft, machine tools and
earth moving machinery.

C 955 Nickel Aluminum Bronze is a high strength nickel-bearing aluminum
bronze exhibiting excellent yield, compressive strength, high hardness and adequate
elongation. It is a good bearing material suitable for heavy duty, high shock and
high impact applications. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance,
good machinability and weldability. Additional strength can be achieved through heat
treating. It is used as heavy duty bushings and bearings, gears, and wear parts. It
finds use in many marine applications as well as pump parts, machine tool parts,
aircraft parts and military applications.

C 959 Aluminum Bronze is used in applications requiring excellent wear properties
because of increased hardness. This alloy is used in forming, bending, and drawing.
It is also used extensively as wear strips in stamping presses, as well as in forming
rolls, draw dies, die inserts and rings. It is used as high strength bushings and
machine parts not subject to impact or shock.

C 95510 Heat Treated Nickel Aluminum Bronze is one of the highest strength
nickel-bearing aluminum bronzes. It exhibits excellent yield, compressive strength,
high hardness and adequate elongation. It is a good bearing material suitable for
heavy duty and high impact applications. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance,
heat resistance, good machinability and weldability. Its additional strength is achieved
through heat treating. It is used as heavy duty bushings and bearings, gears, and
wear parts. It finds use in marine applications as well as pump parts, machine tool
parts, aircraft parts and military applications. It is specified most often as bearing
components in aircraft landing gear.

G2 Gray Iron is a pearlitic gray iron containing Type A graphite. Gray Iron bars
made to this specification have optimal strength, wear and hardness when compared
to the other gray iron grades. This material is well suited for applications requiring
high resistance to wear and response to heat treatment. This specification is similar
to ASTM A48/A 48M, Class 40. The microstructure will contain Type VII, A, size 4-6
graphite as defined in ASTM A247. The matrix is fully pearlitic. The rim will consist
of Type D, size 4-6 graphite in a pearlite matrix with small amounts of ferrite. Chill
carbides will be less than 5% in any field at 100x and are well dispersed.
Chemical Composition (%)*
Carbon Silicon Manganese Sulfur Phosphorus

Carbon and silicon targets are specified for each bar size in order to control the size and shape of the graphite flake. Small amounts of alloying elements are used to stabilize the pearlitic structure.

G2 Gray Iron can be hardened by fast methods, such as flame and induction hardening. In addition to conventional quench and temper methods. G2 can be oil quench hardened from 1600° F (885° C) to a minimum hardness of Rockwell C 50 on the outside of the bar. The inside diameter hardness will be less than Rockwell C 50. Lower quench hardness on the inside diameters are a result of larger graphite flakes and not as loss of matrix hardness.
