BIRCHFIELD [email protected] Seventeen members from the 653rd Combat Logistics Support Squadron didn’t know quite what they were get- ting into when they recently headed to Kadena Air Base, Japan, to repair a grounded MC-130P Combat Shadow. True to the group’s form, however, they rolled up their sleeves and used their skills to get the Air Force Special Operations Command aircraft flying again. The team, consisting of 13 sheet metal structural maintainers, two elec- tricians and two crew chiefs, had their work cut out for them. “We replaced 61 buttline longerons, left and right side, one at a time,” said Master Sgt. Jeff Krimmer, structural maintenance NCO in charge in the 653rd CLSS and team chief. “The longerons tie the front of the fuselage to the center wing box on the MC- 130P aircraft. It gives the fuselage strength.” Sergeant Krimmer said the longeron on the 1965 aircraft had been severely corroded due to age and Kadena’s environmental effects. Normally, a depot team would do the job. This time, however, the 653rd CLSS tackled the mission. And while the unit has lots of experience, this trip was a first, Sergeant Krimmer said. “This is the first time the longerons have been replaced in the field,” he said. “It’s usually replaced (at the Air Logistics Center), if replaced at all. The challenge was that we didn’t know what we were getting into.” Once inside the project, the team discovered the right side longerons were completely corroded and there were 17 areas on its skin that needed replacement. Additionally, three ring segments that tie each longeron togeth- er were corroded and needed replace- ment along with replacement of the fit- tings that tie the longerons into the cen- ter wing box. Tech. Sgt. Brad Gravot, a structural maintenance craftsman in the 653rd CLSS who was the assistant team chief and day shift lead on the mission, said the work was a major undertaking. “We encountered problems with the end fittings as far as them kind of being tweaked and twisted,” he said. “When we replaced them with the new ones, we had to deal with the engineers a lot, calling back and telling them that it’s shifted this way or that way, trying to get it in its correct position.” It’s challenges like this that keep Sergeant Gravot going though. Robins active-duty military put their minds to it and reduced their BMI by 16.2 percent. Staff Sgt. Shawn Moore, an aero- space medicine journeyman in the 78th Medical Operations Squadron, had a BMI of 33. The 27-year-old Texas native now boasts a BMI of 29.4 thanks to a healthier lifestyle and a good support system. “I really just looked at what I was eating and I cut back a lot of extra things, like eating out,” he said. “I looked at the fat content and the carbs that I was eating and cut out sweets. I did a lot of running.” Tech. Sgt. Gabreayl Harris, NCO in charge at the Robins Health and Wellness Center, said other Airmen are also tackling the BMI battle with a new attitude. Sergeant Harris said Airmen have successfully reduced their BMI through healthy eating and exercise. The HAWC’s extensive classes on healthy living and assistance from an on-staff dietitian, exercise physi- ologist and nurse educator have been a winning recipe for long-lasting change for Airmen, Sergeant Harris said. “Right now, everything’s going pretty well,” Sergeant Harris said. “It was kind of rough early because of the approach individuals took and how they didn’t want to do it. Now, it’s getting a lot better and I just hope we continue to progress.” Col. Michael Bledsoe, chief of occupational medicine in the 78th Medical Group, said for some peo- ple, keeping weight off is the real test. Approaching weight loss sensibly is the key to keeping it off, Colonel Bledsoe said. “Find exercise you like doing,” he said. “Find foods that you like eating and learn to eat them in reasonable amounts. If your road to weight loss involves misery and deprivation, then I can pretty much guarantee that you’re not going to keep the weight off.” Colonel Bledsoe said people should avoid quick result ‘fad diets’ that offer empty promises. BIRCHFIELD [email protected] As the 101 Critical Days of Summer campaign reaches its halfway point, Robins’ safety officials remind people that watching out for others’ actions is an important part of ensuring one’s own safety. A recent motorcycle accident involving an officer in the Air Force Reserve Command at Robins illustrat- ed that point. “We had an individual assigned to Robins who was involved in a motor- cycle accident July 3 late in the evening, probably right after the fire- works show,” said Jerry Clineman, ground safety chief in the 78th Air Base Wing Safety office. “(He) was basically riding correctly (and) had all of his personal protective equipment on. He was a certified and a senior experienced rider who was struck by a car that pulled out from an intersec- tion.” Jerry Morningstar, Robins’ Motorcycle Safety Program manager, said even though motorcycle safety training is important, training alone can’t guarantee freedom from mishaps. Mr. Morningstar said being trained on proper motorcycle technique and safety is, however, one thing motorcy- clists can do to cut the odds of an acci- dent this summer. “MSF courses are mandatory for anyone to ride on this base and they’re mandatory for military period,” he said, adding that riders learn valuable skills through the course to help pre- vent injury. Seventeen members from the 653rdCombat Logistics Support Squadrondidn’t know quite what they were get-ting into when they recently headed toKadena Air Base, Japan, to repair agrounded MC-130P Combat Shadow.

True to the group’s form, however,they rolled up their sleeves and usedtheir skills to get the Air Force SpecialOperations Command aircraft flyingagain.

It shows you care aboutwho you work for orwith. And, since I’vebeen working for theVoluntary ProtectionProgram, I know it’s alsoimportant because it helpsminimize accidents andreduce lost man hours.

The military has under-stood the wingmanphilosophy for a long-time, and I think we ascivilians are becominga family of wingmentoo because we realizeit’s important to bethere for one another.

“That’s one thing I likeabout being in the 653rdCLSS,” he said. “Whenyou’re out on the line, it’spretty much normal, typicalrepairs or replacing fastenersand maintenance stuff. Beingin a depot, every (temporaryduty) and every aircraft is adifferent thing. It’s never thesame.”

Overcoming the mission’schallenges meant working on

a three-shift rotation, sevendays a week and working alittle longer some days tocompensate for the time dif-ference between Robins andKadena when engineer inputwas needed.

Tech. Sgt. DonaldMcMullin, a structural main-tenance craftsman in the653rd CLSS, said thesquadron worked well withthe host unit on the job.

“It was an outstandingteam effort from everybody,”he said. “Because we are the653rd CLSS, we are multi-

skilled. I can do wiring andour electricians can do sheetmetal, so it was a combinedeffort from everybody on theteam to get this thing done.”

The MC-130P was one ofthree such aircraft groundedat Kadena.

Sergeant Krimmer said afive-person team is currentlyat Kadena working on one ofthe other grounded AFSOCaircraft.

The second team isexpected to return in a monthor so, Sergeant Krimmersaid.

Colonel Bledsoe said one ofthe most dependable ingredi-ents to long-lasting weight lossis persistence.

Sergeant Moore said he hasa strong support network to

ensure a healthy weight stayingpower.

“Between my wife andsome of my co-workers andfriends, I have great support,”he said. “My NCOIC is verysupportive of me. Our newshirt that just came in got real-ly involved and has been verysupportive and encouraged me.Even during (AirmanLeadership School) people toldme, ‘Keep at it. Don’t give up.’They encouraged me to keeppressing toward my goal.”

Mr. Clineman said exercis-ing the wingman concept andtaking a few minutes to use per-sonal protective equipmentwould’ve prevented thesemishaps.

David Decker, a 78th ABWSafety Office occupationalsafety and health manager, saidwhile safety concerns are

heightened during summermonths, safety should be ayear-round focus.

“We know that during thesummer months there is alwaysan increase in outdoor activitieslike swimming and boating,and with gas prices the waythey are we have a lot of motor-cycle operators,” he said. “Weneed to keep our guard up, notjust during the 101 CriticalDays of Summer, but alwaysbecause we could be sittinganywhere and somebody elsecould come out of nowhere.”

Commissary’s meat department cuts down competition to win regional award

The Robins Commissarywas recently named the bestmeat department in a largecommissary for the Eastregion of the DefenseCommissary Agency.

Members of the meatdepartment team werethrilled to receive recogni-tion for their commitment toserving the needs of theircustomers as they processmore than 110,000 tons ofmeat each month.

According to the team,the award was even sweeterbecause it was the first timethe meat department hadbeen recognized with suchan honor.

Jerry Lynn, meat depart-ment manager, said hethinks one of the things thathelped the nine-person teamearn the award was the factthey were unaware theywere being considered forthe award.

“We didn’t even know wewere up for it, to tell you thetruth. So we were just goingabout our daily business andthat’s what won it for us,”Mr. Lynn said.

He said the team is allabout quality and makingsure their patrons get whatthey want.

Along with being namedbest large commissary meatdepartment, each of the teammembers was also given acash award to help celebratetheir success.

Leroy Davis, a commis-sary meat cutter, creditsteamwork for the depart-ment’s recognition.

“One thing I like about ithere is everybody knowstheir job and we come in anddo what we’ve got to do.Therefore we are happy andthe customers are happy,”Mr. Davis said.

Mr. Lynn said one of his

favorite parts about being atthe commissary is dealingwith the vast variety of peo-ple who shop at the commis-sary.

He said because both theactive-duty and retiredmembers who shop at thecommissary have such dif-ferent backgrounds, thecommissary makes sure tocater to their needs and offerthem a few pieces of backhome such as beef brisketsfor barbecuing for thosefrom Texas and New Mexicoand beef loin tip roast forthose with West coast roots.

“We try to cater to every-one’s meat preferences fromback home,” said Mr. Lynn.

worker in the meat depart-ment, said his favorite partof working in the meatdepartment is dealing withthe customers.

“I think we get a lot morespecial requests than othergrocery stores, such as arequest for a whole pig lastweek,” he said. “We arealways happy to fill themwhen we can.”

Robert Lewis, a meat cut-ter, agreed the special servic-es offered at the commissaryare one of the things thatmake them stand out.

“We are still full service.If they walk up and want itsliced, diced or ground theyare going to get it,” Mr.Lewis said.

Joel Culpepper’s love ofaircraft drew him to Robinsin 1966.

Forty-two years later, theWarner Robins native isretiring with fond memoriesof a career marked by goodfriends and milestones inaviation history.

Mr. Culpepper, an indus-trial production supervisor inthe 402nd AircraftMaintenance Group, got hisstart at Robins through theAircraft MechanicApprenticeship Program. Hesaid a lot has changed sincehe started his career.

“When I hired in, it was$1.91 per hour,” he said.“That was top money backthen. A journeyman grademechanic made about $3 anhour. That was a good salaryback in those days.”

Fresh out of high school,Mr. Culpepper worked on C-130s and C-141s, and pro-vided area support for air-craft worldwide.

In 1967, Mr. Culpepperjoined the Air Force Reserveand served as an aircraftmechanic for 10 years.

In 1969, Mr. Culpepperworked in functional testingand some time later he rantests on C-130 and C-141engines, checking for leaks,trimming motors and adjust-ing props.

Mr. Culpepper gainedknowledge of his tradethrough Dudley HughesVocational School in Macon,Ga., and on-base training atRobins.

In his more than fourdecades of aircraft mainte-nance, the C-141 has meantthe most to Mr. Culpepper.

The 60-year-old watchedon TV as the last C-141 leftWright-Patterson Air ForceBase in Dayton, Ohio, a fewyears ago. It was an emotion-filled time for him.

In addition, USAFTPS conducts exchange pro-grams with the U.S. Navy,United Kingdom and Frenchtest pilot schools to train fixedand rotary wing pilots andflight test engineers.

Rotary wing pilots andengineers will be assigned toconduct testing on the latestrotary wing systems to includeCV-22 and special ops assets.Applicants must have strongacademic and technical expe-rience and a desire to helpdevelop the next generation ofair force weapons andweapons systems.

CALT is a pilot programconsisting of four classeswith 25 students each, for atotal of 100 graduates in fis-cal year 2009. Participant

feedback will drive its future.Classes will be taught atMaxwell Air Force Base, Ala.Volunteers may select a pri-mary and alternate date; how-ever, final class dates will bebased on Air Force needs. Thefirst class is scheduled for Oct.27 to Nov. 7.

OPTIMIZING TIME USED FOR ALCCOMMANDER’S CALLS:

Present method: The currentmethod for transporting personnel tothe ALC Commander’s Calls at theCivic Center sometimes causes peopleto arrive over one hour ahead of thesession. The bus arrives at their build-ing 90 minutes ahead; it takes abouteight minutes to travel to the CivicCenter, and people are inside and seat-ed in less than five minutes.

This means they sit there for around75 minutes until the session starts. Thisis the worst case. The best case is thatpeople are there around 30 minutesearly. If around half of the base person-nel go to the Commander’s Call, thenroughly 8,000 people must wait anaverage of 60 minutes before the ses-sion starts. This translates to 8,000labor hours of waste. For simplicity,use a labor rate of $50 per hour. Thatmeans we have wasted $400,000 oftaxpayer (and ALC) funds.

Proposed method: Our base,because of our mission, has manylogistics and scheduling experts.There’s no reason to believe we cannotshorten the amount of time that peoplemust arrive ahead of the scheduled startof the sessions. For example, if we askall of the bus drivers to document thenumber of people that they picked uprecently at each stop, then we canalready determine the best routes forthe next Commander’s Call.

From that feedback, make a morecareful analysis to send busses to theexact buildings as appropriate approxi-mately 40 minutes before the session isto begin. If the bus driver waits 10minutes to ensure all the potential pas-sengers are aboard, then the personnelcan be seated at the Civic Center 15minutes later. This is more than enoughtime to be sure that the audiences are inplace before the commander comes into speak. The 60 minutes of wastedtime is therefore reduced to only 15

minutes.Expected benefits: The proposed

method saves three-fourths of the pre-vious amount of time wasted, whichtranslates to roughly $300,000 savedfor each Commander’s Call.

Furthermore, there will be improvedmorale, because the personnel will notfeel that they have had to waste a largeamount of time just to keep the ALCcommander happy, so to speak. If wetruly put people first, then we shouldwork very hard not to waste their timeand thus show them disrespect.

COLONEL BERRY’S RESPONSE: Thank you for your suggestion and

your interest in optimizing our trans-portation schedules to support ALCCommander’s Calls. You are correctthat we have access to in-house logis-tics and scheduling experts. They assistwith each scheduled Commander’sCall. You have correctly identifiedtransportation as one of our constraints;

we work diligently to balance cost andefficiency.

Simply put, we do not have ade-quate vehicles to quickly transportlarge numbers of personnel nor do wehave the funding to lease additionalbusses. Each schedule seeks to consid-er the number of available buses andpotential attendees for any particularsession, while minimizing the timeaway from the workplace. Our actionofficers monitor each session for trans-portation and schedule “lessonslearned,” which we incorporate into thenext Commander’s Call.

These face-to-face sessions are aninvestment, rather than a cost. Theopportunity for the workforce to heardirectly from the Center commander ongoals, visions, issues, problems, andsolutions is invaluable. We will contin-ue to monitor transportation and waittimes to ensure we are good stewardsof our tax dollars and improve thetransportation schedule where feasible.

The 11-foot–highgranite memorial to prisoners of war and missing in action militarymembers is the culmination of more than 12 years of fundraising by theRobins POW/MIA committee and community supporters. David Cowles,project manager, said the majority of the funds raised were the result ofthe sale of commemorative coins.

The granite portion of the monument was made by Clark Memorials ofMacon from Georgia granite with the original design drawn by JimBalletto, former art director at the museum. The completed memorialwill display an American flag and bronze medallions representing allfive uniformed services. The eagle sculpture atop the monument wearsa shackle and chain signifying that the eagle will remain chained untilall prisoners of war and missing in action members are brought home.

A: The command recently devel-oped a detailed strategic communica-tion plan for AFSO21 highlightingthe Air Force Materiel CommandAFSO21 Themes: People, Partnersand Processes.

The primary message for thePeople Theme is for all of us to workas One Materiel Command, unifiedand fully integrated, to deliverunprecedented technology, acquisi-tion, test and sustainment capabilitiesto the warfighter.

The Partners theme calls for con-

tinuous process improvement perme-ating every facet of our operation,from those who supply us, to our pri-mary customer – the warfighter. Alarge part of our success dependsupon effective, efficient and reliablesuppliers and our customer satisfac-tion depends upon our ability to meetexpectations.

Finally, the theme for processeshighlights AFSO21 as the engineAFMC will continue to use to powercontinuous process improvement.

Q: I saw an Air Force SmartOperations for the 21st Centuryassessment team reviewing mygroup’s AFSO21 activity. Why arewe still doing assessments since wehave been conducting lean eventssince 1999?

A: While it is true that we havebeen involved in lean and otherAFSO21 activities for quite a while,I feel it is important to periodicallyassess our level of maturity to ensurewe have continued growth while sus-

taining the gains from all the activi-ties we have accomplished.

In September 2006 the CenterAFSO21 office conducted anAFSO21 event to refine our previousassessment tool and process. Theteam defined eight elements whichcomprise the primary focus of theAFSO21 assessments which are con-ducted annually at the squadron leveland rolled up to the groups and wings.The elements include leader’s com-mitment, strategic alignment anddeployment, value stream map, toolknowledge and utilization, processimprovement activity and execution,flow and pull, perfection, and modelprocess and model cell.

Each of the elements have keyactions and details which gauge abaseline of where an organization ison their AFSO21 journey and identi-fies areas to target for improvement.

In the fall of 2007, Air ForceMateriel Command developed a com-mand-level assessment based on theAFSO21 Playbook and many of ourCenter AFSO21 elements which fur-ther validated the value of theprocess.

AFSO21 relies heavily on leanwhich focuses on the relentless pur-suit of perfection. Our AFSO21 matu-rity assessment gauges our path inthat pursuit which, in the end, trans-lates to improved warfighter support.

Many things come to mindwhen you think of youthsports and Middle Georgiaincluding football, basketballand baseball. But with its hotsummers and mild winters,there’s one sport many see astruly out of left field – icehockey.

Chief Master Sgt. Kit Frey,an enlisted adviser for the AirNational Guard at Robins andyouth hockey coach, wouldlike to see more youth consid-er hockey as the sport ofchoice. For the past 15 years,he has dedicated every freemoment, and nearly everyfree dollar, to hockey.

“People ask me why I doit. I do it because I love it,”Frey said. “I love the sportand I love working with thesekids. It’s so rewarding to seethe players improve over theyears.”

During the hockey season,Frey devotes 30 to 40 hourseach week to the sport. Hetravels about 1,500 miles aweek and spends about$1,200 on gas each month.He estimates he has spent anamount equal to “the cost of ahouse,” but he wouldn’t tradehis experiences for anything.

“It’s expensive. Not manypeople would spend themoney or time I spend, but Ilike doing it so I don’t consid-er it a sacrifice. I do itbecause I want to and becauseI love hockey,” he said.

Frey’s passion for hockeybegan in Alaska when his 7-year-old son saw some hock-ey players at an ice rink andexpressed an interest in thesport. “I didn’t know whathockey was. I didn’t knowwhat ice skates were. I basi-cally taught myself how toskate and how to coach,” Freysaid.

Frey began volunteering tocoach youth teams and takingclinics to improve his hockeyskills. He is now a certified

Level 5 coach for USAHockey, the highest certifica-tion available. And when he’snot on the ice running drills orinstructing youth, he spendshis time figuring out ways torecruit more young players tothe game of hockey, a daunt-ing task in Middle Georgia.

“I’ve triedeverything toincrease inter-est in iceh o c k e ya m o n gyouth,” Freysaid. “I amnot sure thisarea is realconducive toice hockey,but I am still always lookingfor kids who want to play.”

One obstacle Frey faceswhen recruiting youth to thesport is the stigma attached tohockey that it’s violent, wherefighting is practically encour-aged.

“I try to instill in these kidsthat fighting is not what thisgame is about,” Frey said.

“We don’t condone fighting,especially at the youth level.Fighting is not accepted at all.Officials have really focusedon this because it takes awayfrom the game. “

Perhaps the biggest obsta-cle for the coach in recruitingnew kids to the sport is cost.

there are opportunity costs.Frey said parents are discour-aged when they learn there isno ice rink in Warner Robinsand their kids will have totravel to Atlanta or Columbusto play or practice.

“You tell people howmuch it costs to get started orwhere you have to go for iceand they lose interest,” Frey

said. “But those who do getinvolved are richly reward-ed. Hockey teaches team-work and other life lessonsthat benefit kids long afterthey stop playing competi-tively.”

Those who live inColumbus, where there arestrong youth and high schoolhockey programs, have aneasier time getting involved.Joe McCrea, a hockey refereein the Columbus area, said heappreciates the time andeffort Frey puts in coachingyoung players.

“He is an incrediblecoach,” said McCrea, whoseson plays for Frey. “Not onlydoes he have a passion for thegame, but he has the kid’sgreatest interests at heart. Hetruly cares about the youngplayers.”

McCrea said he is amazedat Frey’s ability to take mar-ginal skaters and turn them into great hockey players.

“He’s the total package asfar as a coach goes. He knowsthe game and knows how toteach the game.” he said. “Iconsider it a privilege to havemy kid playing for him.”

Frey, who has focused ondeveloping talents of manyyouth players, including twosons, is now working with his16-year-old daughter Emily,who recently became interest-ed in the sport.

Emily said she has beenaround hockey her whole lifeand wished she would havestarted playing sooner, buthas been enjoying the timeshe gets to spend with herfather.

“Hockey is something heand I can enjoy together,” shesaid. “It’s a great way tospend time with him.”

Whether it’s driving sever-al hours one way for a littleice time or hitting the pave-ment in an effort to recruitnew players to his sport, Freycan be found involved in thesport he has grown to lovewith a passion.

Volunteer coach devotes time, money teaching ice hockey to local youth

Each morning a break area in the F-15 Wing Repair Flight transforms intoan exercise haven for maintainers fromthe 572nd Commodities MaintenanceSquadron.

Some of the maintainers don T-shirtsstating their early morning mission to“Stretch and Flex.” The 15-minute rou-tine allows members of the flight tolimber up before they begin their shift.

As members of the flight pile intothe snack room at the beginning of theshift, participants push the tables to thecenter of the room and spread out in aloop.

Between 10 and 20 members of theflight participate in a wide variety ofstretches and flexes designed to helpreduce on-the-job strains each morning.

Zora Hubbard, a sheet-metalmechanic for the flight, said she beganparticipating in the program more thana year ago and she has noticed a greatreduction in aches and pains at the endof each duty day.

“It loosens you up and gets you offto a good start,” she added. “I don’tcatch as many cramps and get as stiff asI use to.”

Robert Martinez, another sheetmetal mechanic for the flight said it notonly keeps him limber on the job ithelps him recover from his afternoonphysical fitness time each day.

“I also take advantage of the threedays a week of fitness time, so when Iget up in the morning I am sore andstiff. It gives me a chance to stretchthose muscles before work,” Mr.Martinez said. “I try not to miss a day.”

Patty Gilbert, also a sheet metalmechanic for the flight, said she justreturned to the Stretch and Flex groupand she is already suffering the conse-quences of her absence.

“I can tell I haven’t been doingthis. I am a little rusty,” Ms. Gilbertsaid.

Ms. Gilbert said one of herfavorite parts about participating eachmorning is getting to have some funbefore heading off to turn wrenchesand bang hammers.

The Stretch and Flex volunteerinstructor, Guy Harrison, who is alsoa sheet metal mechanic for the flightsaid, “I am a firm believer that Stretchand Flex is a good tool to get youloose and ready for the work day.”

He said he tries to vary the stretch-es a little each day, but that he alwaystries to ensure all the right areas aretargeted such as the wrist and handsfor those who suffer from carpal tun-nel, the knees because they all do alot of lifting and the neck and shoul-ders because of all the strange posi-tions they have to get into to com-plete certain maintenance proce-dures.

Morning Stretch and Flex routine warms up workforce

For many athletes, grow-ing older means watching ourfavorite sports from thebleachers, but for TerranceIsom staying off the basket-ball court was not an option.

This is why Isom startedtearing up the courts as a bas-ketball official in the late1990s.

“I didn’t want to give it uptotally. This was my way tostay in the game,” said Isom,an electrical engineer for C-17 system support manage-ment squadron here.

He started thanks to anudge from a fellow Robinsemployee, who had seenIsom’s passion for the gamewhen he played intramuralshere.

His first bout with officiat-ing was for Robins intramuraland youth sports. Since then,he has continued to excel andgraduate to different levels ofofficiating including highschool, junior college andDivision II colleges through-out the Southeast.

“I never thought aboutbeing an official before. I wasprobably harder on them thananyone else,” Isom said.

He quickly added that hedidn’t know what he was talk-ing about back then.

“It’s kind of fun havingthem ripping at me. I knowhow much I didn’t know andI know how much they thinkthey know,” Isom said.

It was his work as a highschool official that recentlyearned him state-wide atten-tion when he was named the

high school basketball officialof the year for the state ofGeorgia.

Isom said his selectioncame as a complete surprisebecause he wasn’t even awarehe had been nominated.

He said he thinks the keyto his success as an official isthat he, “genuinely likesdoing it.”

Those who have officiatedbeside him or whose schoolshave been subjected to hiscalls are equally pleased withhis selection.

“I think it was a well-deserved recognition. He is atop-notch collegiate and highschool official,” said AlanSmith, executive director ofthe Georgia Athletic OfficialsAssociation, who oversaw theselection process.

Smith said it is Isom’speople skills and ability tocall games fairly on both endsof the court that made him agood candidate for the award.

“He is the kind of officialwho can get in a testy situa-tion and handle it and keepthe game on an even keel,”said Smith, who has also offi-ciated with Isom on the col-lege level.

The Wilkinson CountyHigh School basketballcoach, Aaron Geter, said healways looks forward to see-ing Isom on the court becausehe regards him as an “ulti-mate professional.”

“He knows the rules andregulations and he is alwaysin the right place and general-ly makes the right calls,” saidGeter. “He calls the game ashe sees it and maintains theflow of the game.”
