“On August 29, 2014, I will be leaving Milagro House staff to be
married and move to the Penn State area! It truly has been a great
two years of employment. I’ve had the privilege of working with
the most incredible, caring, and dedicated staff and getting to know
and work with so many wonderful volunteers! Thank you for all
that you do to help support Milagro House and keep this program
going! Milagro House would not be the same without you!!”
*Please stay tuned in anticipation for the changes that will follow
Katrina’s departure.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT: Elizabeth, “Lizzie” Naranjo
“HOUSING AND EDUCATION FOR MOTHERS AND CHILDREN EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS”
We are so excited for the partnership that has been created between Milagro House and Upohar Ethnic Cuisines! Upohar
serves a variety of international vegan and vegetarian menus. Their mission is to provide employment opportunities for
women of low-income status to help them rise above their present situation and work
towards becoming self-sustaining members of the community. We are very proud of
Lizzie, who became employed at Upohar during the launch of their restaurant this
past spring. Lizzie is responsible for a wide variety of tasks, including: taking orders,
greeting customers, overseeing payment transactions, cleaning up, and all other work
-related needs. Lizzie is thriving in her position and we can’t wait to see where this
opportunity leads her!

A Special Note From Volunteer Coordinator, Katrina:
“Upohar is a very unique restaurant. It’s a positive place
to work that serves healthy food; working here even makes
me want to eat healthier! Working as a hostess builds my
confidence and I always feel good when customers leave
with smiles on their faces.”

PROGRAM NEWS Community Partnerships
Milagro House is excited to announce our new partnership
with SouthEast Dental Services that provides our children
with on-site cleanings and fluoride treatments. In addition,
Dental Hygienist, Deb Overbaugh works with the mothers
providing educational guidance on proper oral hygiene for
both mother and child.
When asked to share a statement defining why she does
what she does, Deb graciously replied,
“Every child deserves to have a healthy smile.”
We celebrate this community partnership and look forward
to continually working with SouthEast Lancaster Health
Services.
SouthEast also provides these portable
services in the lobby of the CAP building, in
all SELHS medical sites and at all Lancaster
Head Start locations in Lancaster County.
This Fall they will be starting the program
for the School District of Lancaster
Preschool Program.
In the calendar year of 2013, SouthEast
provided 1244 portable visits. They serve
children ages 5 years and younger.
THANK YOU
ABOUT SouthEast:
Since the start of our Children’s Program in November 2013, 29 children have been
assessed by Kathy, our Children’s Health Liaison using the Denver II Developmental
Screening Test! Through our partnership with Early Intervention, one child who showed
developmental delays was referred in order to receive supportive services.
“When these five women came
into the GED classroom, they
all knew the task that was ahead
of them. With perseverance,
sacrifice, disappointments and
hours of study, they all achieved
what they came here to do. This
is an amazing accomplishment
considering how overwhelming
their lives can sometimes
become – taking care of their children, making meals, shopping for groceries,
keeping doctor appointments, learning to live cooperatively with other mothers
and their children, attending enrichment classes, and counseling. I don’t know if I
could do all that and still attend school and do my assignments.”
Of the 321 adult learners in Lancaster and Lebanon counties that
earned their GED certificate, we are so very proud of the five
Milagro House students counted among them.
We extend a great thank you to the IU13 Adult Education team that
helped to make these accomplishments possible. And of course, a
heart-filled thank you to our dedicated and passionate Education
Director, Nancy Barton who worked countless hours to help these
women reach their educational goals!
