The Earth, Our Home

The Earth

We live on planet Earth, which is also known as a Blue planet

because three-fourth of the Earth is covered by water and

one-fourth is covered by land.

Shape of the Earth

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese sailor. He and his crew

started their journey from Spain. They kept sailing in one

direction. After nearly three years, they reached the same

place from where they had started. This proved that the Earth

is round like a ball.

Atmosphere

Earth is surrounded by a layer of air called the atmosphere. It has

the right temperature needed by all the living things to live. Air is

a mixture of many gases like oxygen, nitrogen etc. It contains

21% oxygen, 78% Nitrogen and 1% other gases.

Globe

A globe is a model of the Earth.

It is very useful as we can study the different places on the Earth.

A huge globe will be difficult to carry. This problem can be solved if we

use maps.

Maps A map is a drawing of the Earth or a part of it.

It is very useful as we can carry it everywhere.

A book of maps is called an atlas.

Directions on a Map There are four directions on a map-

1) North

2) East

3) South

4) West

Class-3 Science Worksheet-3

Animals and Plants

Though both animals and plants are living things, they still are different

from each other in many ways.

Animals move in search of food and shelter.

Plants on the other hand are fixed to the ground. They can only move their parts.

Animals cannot make their own food. They get their food from plants, animals or both.

Plants however, green plants make their own food with the help of water, air and sunlight. Only

non-green plants like moulds and mushrooms get their food from dead and rotting matter.

Animals like horses, tigers breathe through their lungs. Fish have gills which help them to

breathe in water. Insects like ants, have air holes on their body which help them to breathe.

Plants breathe through tiny pores on their leaves.

Animals have sense organs — skin, eyes, nose, ears and tongue. These organs help them

to know about the world around them.

Plants however, do not have sense organs.

Animals like snakes and birds lay eggs. Babies hatch from these eggs. Some animals like

cats and cows give birth to their young ones.

Plants produce seeds. These seeds give rise to new plants.

In some cases, new plants can grow from a part of the plant

like stem, roots or leaves. Animals and plants are different from each other, still they depend on each other to live. If there are just

enough plants, just enough plant-eating animals, and just enough flesh-eating animals in the world, there

is a balance in nature. When there are too few animals of a kind, such as the tiger, this balance gets

disturbed. When we cut down too many trees without planting new ones, then also this balance gets

disturbed. So we should protect animals like the tiger and also grow more trees.

FACE VALUE

The face value of a digit is the digit itself. It does not matter where the digit is

placed in the number.

So, in the number 2394,

The face value of 2 is 2.

The face value of 3 is 3.

The face value of 9 is 9.

The face value of 4 is 4.

CHECKPOINT:

The place value of each digit can be represented as:

3) Write the numbers in expanded form:

a) 7098- _______________________________________________
