It was the men who came from Moslem countries to find work in German factories who first sparked the German in- terest in Islam- There are* about 120,000 Moslems employed in Germany —. most of theih from Turkey and Iran—and other 10,000 Moslem students study- ing at German universities. Eight mosques have already been built In this country. At prayer services one can see not only foreign workers and stu- dents bnt also a number of Germans who come out of etui* - oslty. or honest longing for jet- llgious roots. For many people it seems to be a fashionable thing to do. In the town of Schwetzlngen, for instance, there is a mosque built in- the 19th century 4>y nobleman who fell in love with Islamic culture. Now a onetime unskilled worker named Abdul- lah (Norbert) Weisser has a congregation of German Mos- lems and holds Sunday meetings in the mosque with great suc- cess. Not all of the Islam practiced in jGerman is orthodox. The Ahmadiyya sect which has re- ceived great publicity here is considered heretical by tradi- tional Moslems. One Ahmadiyya congregation in Frankfurt is led by a former officer in the African Corps who calls himself Imam Abdus-Schakoor Kunze. The head of the Ahmadiyya mosque in Nuernberg is Dr. Mohammed Said, alias Dr. Karl Koller, an army physician dur- ing World War n.
