Nashville's Monica Ramey is a shining example. Her excellent release Make Someone Happy offers resourceful, soaring and engaging interpretations of material from The Great American Songbook." -Ron

Storyteller Doll - Polymer Clay and Mixed Media Workshop

Instructor: Renee LaRose

Friday, November 11 and 18. December 2 from Noon to 3:00 The power of story as "the power to remember" was well known to our ancestors who passed information by word of mouth. The folktales, legends, and myths of the past have been passed down for centuries, preserved because they were organized in story form, easy to remember, and could be told again and again.

This polymer clay workshop introduces a fun and modern way in which to tell your personal story both visually and literary. Whether you wish to tell a secret, express a wish, share a special feeling or experience, or represent a quality you want to embrace in your life, you will create a place to keep it and hand it down to you loved ones.

Students will work primarily with polymer clay to create a storyteller figure which contains a hidden compartment which opens to reveal an accordion-folded book. An ordinary matchbox serves as the structure for the compartment, demonstrat-ing how everyday materials can be readily integrated with polymer clay. The book pages can be decorated with any number of things - a favorite quote written in calligraphy, rubber stamping, drawings that tell a tale, or a collage of inspiring images. The simple structural techniques used can easily be adapted to create a figure or doll with personal or cultural significance. 3-day workshop cost: $50 includes supplies.

Kathryn’s Corner of Marvelous Volunteers

Volunteer Spotlight ~~~~~~~~~~

RSVP held their Annual Volunteer Recognition recently at the Knowles Center. Members that have volunteered in 5 year increments received pins for their volunteer service. We were also honored to have one of our Martin members

receive the Second Mile Award. This award goes to the person that has gone above and beyond to help our organization. Marilyn Nevens received the award for her leadership of Project Transportation. This group is raising funds to purchase a 24-passenger mini-bus for the Center to use on our many trips. The group has raised $3,987

through the sale of Christmas Cards for a total of $6,545 through additional fund raising efforts. ~~~~~~~~~~~

Ravenswood Cross Country Team spent a Saturday doing a service project for the Martin Center. Coach Mueller had about 14 students clear cutting and mulching a portion of the back property. Every little bit helps as we see that area become manicured and built out. If you know anyone from that school spread the word

that we appreciate their help. ~~~~~~~~~~~

OPEN HOUSE was a huge success with about 180 people present of which 50 were brand new people coming through the doors for the first time. 14 new members have joined as a result of the event. THANK YOU to

Co-Chairs Ben and Judie Snyder of the Membership Committee and their committee as well as all the teachers, facilitators and volunteers that manned the tables during the day. It was a great window for the community to see

what we have going on here. ~~~~~~~~~~~

THANK YOU to Sandy Omilianowski. Sandy has created a series of scrapbooks to house all the newspaper clippings about the Martin Center. Stop in and see the beautiful job she has done.

~~~~~~~~~~~ Just Joan is always at your disposal. She is ready to send a card of encouragement, sympathy or concern to
any member that needs to know the Martin Center is thinking about them. Let Kathryn know and she’ll pass the info to “Just Joan”.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have another Eagle Scout lined up to build a horseshoe pit out back. He has all his paperwork submitted

and we’ve signed off on it. He may try to finish this fall, weather permitting. He is the grandson of our member Lynda Gibson.

~~~~~~~~~~~ Hurray! We have a group of members and Master Gardeners that have formed a Garden Committee to take care of our beautiful gardens. If you see them working, please thank them for the priceless help they are providing the Center. The names of the committee members are Co-Chairs Bette Holmes and Janice Smith, Tom Cullen, Wray
Estes, Bill Depp, Malcolm Small, Adele Motter and Lisa White. ~~~~~~~~~~
On another note, we are in need of a few good men! Our Set-Up Committee could use some extra hands. When we have enough volunteers I only assign one set-up a month to each member. I’ve doubled up lately as our
programming is growing and a few committee members are out of pocket for the moment. ~~~~~~~~~~~
Special thanks to Eagle Scout Sam Giarratana for lighting the inaugural fire in the fire pit for our first ever Octoberfest! It received rave reviews and has been voted to be a yearly event.
