6 th Grade Math 2010 Fall Semester Exam December 16 th 10:45 – 12:45 am The midterm exam will cover Unit 4 and Unit 5 (Lessons 23 through 35) and select vocabulary from the entire semester, as covered in class and assessed on individual tests and quizzes throughout the semester. Therefore, one of the best ways to study for the exam is to rework old test and quiz problems. That collection of problems is a great bank for possible exam problems. I also suggest the following study strategies: Rework problems from old homework assignments, especially those you missed the first time around. Work extra problems that were not assigned from the sections in the book. Work through the chapter review and chapter test at the end of the chapters in the textbook. Work through the extra practice problems organized by chapter at the end of the textbook (see pg. 632). Work extra problems that were not assigned in the workbook. Use the course website (www.phschool.com ) to get extra practice problems, video tutorials, practice lesson quizzes, practice chapter tests, etc. In addition, make sure you are familiar with all vocabulary terms from this semester (see list in the topical review below). Do not let yourself get caught on an easy exam question because you cannot remember the language or recognize the terminology. I suggest that you use note cards or another helpful study technique to focus on vocabulary. The exam questions will consist of mainly multiple choice and short answer questions. You will only be required to show your work on a small selection of problems; these problems will be worth more points than the others and are the only problems where partial credit will be awarded. Below is a topical list of the things you should know for the exam. Beneath each topic is an example of how a problem of that type may look. Do not be overwhelmed by the breadth of the list, as some of the items are things you know by heart and will likely not need to review. As long as you are confident with the items on this list, you will be ready for the exam. With that said, please note that working the problems on this review guide is NOT enough to prepare you for the exam. It is only a starting point. We will devote two full class periods (Friday, December 10, and Monday, December 13) to exam review. As always, feel free to come ask me about any specific questions you may have. And, by all means come to class (or before or after school) prepared with specific problems you would like me to work with you. TOPICAL OVERVIEW OF EXAM MATERIAL Unit 4 1) Reducing fractions Reduce the following fraction: 36 98 . 2) Finding the least common denominator of two fractions Find the least common denominator between the two fractions. Then, rewrite the fractions using the new denominator. 7 10 , 10 35

6th Grade Math 2010 Fall Semester Exam December 16th 10:45 – 12:45 am

The midterm exam will cover Unit 4 and Unit 5 (Lessons 2‐3 through 3‐5) and select vocabulary from the entire semester, as covered in class and assessed on individual tests and quizzes throughout the semester.  Therefore, one of the best ways to study for the exam is to rework old test and quiz problems.  That collection of problems is a great bank for possible exam problems.  I also suggest the following study strategies:

‐ Rework problems from old homework assignments, especially those you missed the first time around. ‐ Work extra problems that were not assigned from the sections in the book. ‐ Work through the chapter review and chapter test at the end of the chapters in the textbook. ‐ Work through the extra practice problems organized by chapter at the end of the textbook (see pg.

632). ‐ Work extra problems that were not assigned in the workbook. ‐ Use the course website (www.phschool.com) to get extra practice problems, video tutorials, practice

lesson quizzes, practice chapter tests, etc.
