    Oak Valley was like ten thousand other towns except for aneat little house on State Street. There lived a boy with aproblem.

    Every month when the full moon rose in the sky, long hairsgrew from his forehead and hands, and two of his teeth grewinto long, sharp fangs,

    Tommy was a werewolf.

    Why me? Other kids don't worry about the moon.go right on doing their homework or watching TV.me! (Howls like a wolf)

    Thomas, chew your food more carefully.

    Tom, where do you think you're going?

    (Standing up from table) I'm going to bed. I feel too sick togo to school today.

    Little Red Riding Hood gets off free, but they shoot the poorwolf. That isn't fair!

    But the wolf was bad. He wanted to eat the little girl.

    Yeah! That would be really neat. So why does the wolfalways have to lose?

    The purpose of these stories, son, is to develop character.

    Later, as an unhappy teenager, Tommy read an advice columnin a newspaper. He decided to write.

    Dear Abby, [ have a problem. (Pause) Oh, what's the use?How could she possibly know what to do?

    So, Tommy tried telling the family doctor.

    Doctor, f'm a werewolf.

    Have you been geLLing plenty of fresh air and exercise?

    Yes, f run through the woods and the hills howling.

    Well, don't worry, it's just a stage you're going through.

    Finally, Tommy decided to tell his father.

    Dad, are you busy?

    I'm trying to do something with the bills. You see, in one pile[ put the bills we won't pay this month. This other pile is forthe bills we won't pay next month.

    Well, Dad, see, I've got a problem.

    (Ignoring Tom) I don't know how we spend so much money onfood.

    Sometimes T think someone is eating raw meat out of therefrigerator. Tt disappears about once very month.

    (Interrupting) That's what I want to talk about...

    My dear wife, what do you mean?

    Scene 3Five years later.Tommy's school. Hallway and lockers line the stage.

    As Tommy grew older, he became afraid to hang around withthe other teenagers, especially at night. Bull Hawkins, thetown bully picked on him.

    What's the matter with you, Tommy? We never see you atthe hamburger joint, hanging out likea normal guy. Won'tyour Mommy let you out at night?

    Get him, Bull, get him! (They all laugh)

    But joy sometimes sweetens even the most unhappy life. Yousee, after lunch at school, Tommy used to lean against hislocker. Then one day, he noticed a girl who was leaningagainst her locker.

    Hi there.

    Hi. My name's Lily and I'm new here.

    (Stammering) Hi there...

    If you want to get to know me better, big boy, why don't wego out Saturday night?

    (Stammering) S..S..S..Saturday night?

    What's wrong, lover boy, don't you like me?

    How about next week Tuesday?

    Saturday or never. There's a full moon that night, and I don'twant to miss it, if you know what I mean.

    Look, Lily, there's something you should know about me. I'mjust not like the other kids.

    I know, Sweetie. You're kind and gentle.

    For the next few days, Tommy was walking on air.

    Maybe the moon won't really_ be full until Sunday.

    However, you can guess what happened that Saturday night.

    Where is that sweet boy? It's two minutes after eight. Oh,that must be...

    Hi, Lily, sorry I'm .... (Howls).

    (Screams) Ahhhhhh!t!!!!!

    Terrified, Lily ran away.

    Help! Help! Awerewolf!

    And she said she wouldn't care if there was something funnyabout me.

    A werewolf, a werewolfi!!

    A werewolf!

    (Howls)

    Catch him!

    We can't let it run around scaring our kids!

    (Crying) It ate poor, dear Tommy!

    N_ÿ poor Tommy?

    I knew this would happen. The boy had no character.

    Tom: At least they don't know I'm Tommy. (Howls) Rats, there Igo again.

    Just then, Bull Hawkins joined the search.

    Who's afraid of some stupid werewolf?

    The search went on until the moon went down. Just then, asTommy was sneaking out of the woods, he was spotted by thechief of police.

    Chief: Who's there?

    Tom: Please don't shoot! I can explain.

    Chief: Don't worry, Tom, a werewolf doesn't come after you everyday.

    Narrator: Tommy felt his forehead and teeth and realized he was backto normal.

    So Tommy started walking home.

    But I can't go home. People will remember things I've said.The moon will be full again and sooner or later, someone willfigure it out.

    Scene 4Later that night.The stage is divided into two sections. At/eft is farm. At rightis diner with the title "Joe's Caf#" hanging above.

    L boNarrator: Tommy, having made his decision, took the next bus to

    another state. There he found a farm where the people wereglad to take him in even after he told them about hiscondition.

    So Tommy stayed there, helping with the farming and otherchores. For the first time in his life, Tommy felt hopeful abouthis future. (Pause) But then, (pause) an accident happened.

    Tommy, you know you're welcome to stay here. You're agood worker, and we really like your howling, but we just can'tafford to loose any more chickens. So be careful next month,OK?

    Sorry. I'll try to do better.

    So Tommy decided to help out by getting another job.

    I need to earn some money to pay for some new chickens.

    Eventually Tommy found a job working in a diner in a nearbytown. It was called Joe's Caf6.

    Say, Tommy, you're a good worker. You really have a waywith a scrambled egg. How about working the night shift?You'll get better tips.

    Sorry, Joe, but I can't.

    What a bunch. Mary won't work nights either.

    I've told you before, I just can't, Joe.

    Mary Worked behind the counter with Tommy. It was the endof their work day.

    It's six o'clock. Time for us to go, Tommy.

    Uh huh.

    There's a full moon tonight.

    Uh huh.

    Where's Joe? I've got to get home as soon as I can.

    Me, too.

    As it grew darker outside, Tommy became more and moreworried. He kept looking in the shiny part of the coffeemachine to see if there were any signs of a change. He couldsee that Mary was acting strangely, too.

    (to himselF) I must be making her nervous.

    Finally, Tom saw the first rays of the full moon! He startedrunning out the door but then he saw Mary was running out,too. She pushed by him just as Joe was coming through thedoor.

    Thanks for watching the store, you two. Hey, they're in anawful hurry.

    Tommy could feel the fur on his face and saw it on his hands,so he ran straight into the woods.

    I have to get away before I howl.

    As he ran into the woods, he heard a sound that was strange,(pause) and yet familiar.

    (Howls)

    Oh, Mary! What are you doing here?

    Oh, Tommy! What are you doing here?

    (Howl)

  • Narrator: Tommy and Mary were both happy to have found a friend atlast. Now Tommy works at the farm while Mary baby-sits thechildren by telling them stories.

    Hary: It is so nice to be at a place where I am accepted for who Iam.
