PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I can confidently sum the last two weeks up by saying that everything is humming along nicely. Last Friday afternoon was wet and miserable so I decided to visit every classroom to see what was happening. I was very impressed to see every class totally engaged in a wide variety of interesting learning and extra curricula activities. The following photos were all taken between 2.30 and 2.40 on Friday afternoon. Well done to the teachers and students for making every moment at school count. The teacher only day on Tuesday was a huge success. There was a good balance of professional readings, discussions and presentations to keep everyone interested over the entire day. Some of you may have seen the article about the Westport teacher only day. These schools have grouped together to undertake similar professional development as they missed out on the Assess to Learn (AtoL) contract that KAS is on. The staff at KAS are now into the second and final year of the AtoL contract. One foci of the day was to explore the type of classroom dialogue that will promote student learning as well the different structures / organisational elements that will enable students of all abilities to not only learn, but to think . One main message that I took away is that learning should be difficult and challenging. Students should be saying ’this is hard’. If the work is too easy then they will not be thinking and learning. Every Friday, Room 4 has a BP challenge to test their knowledge of forces and motions. So far we have made the tallest poppy (over 1.5m) and the shortest (which just got off the ground). We have also made a marble rolling device that had to hit a target 3m away! It may seem easy but we have limited materials (like newspaper and cellotape), so this means we need to work really hard in our groups. These BP challenges are heaps of fun and I can't wait for more!! Rosie Schulz Room 2 hard at work solving maths problems with Ms.Eder Room 1- Having a great discussion about machines. 6th May 2010. He loves to eat chips,Now he can’t do flips,

He keeps tripping over his feet.by Abby R. and Flynn Hansen.

So he put all of them in green jars.by Abby B., Kurt, Cinty.

It made her go slow,And now she won’t grow,

And now she’s stir-fry don’t you know?by Zeline, Jacob and Jessie.

A woman who hailed from Calcutta,She lived in a house with some butter,

She ate all of it,Now her clothes won’t fit,

Tournament. What a week!

On the last week of term one 17 high schoolstudents made the reasonably long journey fromKaramea to Tapawera. It took about four hours butwe got there in the end. When we arrived we gathered with all the otherschools in the Tapawera school hall, here wewould meet and go home with our assigned billetfamilies- which we would be staying with for theduration of the week.We woke on Monday morning to warm sun andthe anticipation of the long week ahead. After allthe students arrived back at Tapawera AreaSchool, from hopefully a goodnights sleep andrest, we were officially welcomed with a powhirisignalling the beginning of; fun, new friendshipsand a long sports filled week. The events kickedoff at about 10:00am that morning with everyoneenthusiastic about starting the week’scompetitions.

Throughout the week there were high-lights andlow-lights. Karamea came second in: MountainBiking, boys Volley-Ball, Tennis, Table-tennis andGolf. Unfortunately some of our team had to makea few round trips to the St John ambulance crew.Thankfully there we no major injuries.

Wednesday, our last day in Tapawera. Everyonewas still showing signs of energy, so we gave it

our all and ended the day with the social where wecould all; relax, have a dance and think about thetriumphs and fun we’d had throughout the week.

At 10:00pm everyone went back to their billets’house for their last night. Thursday morning we allgathered in the school hall again for the good-byeceremony and to hear the overall scoring.Karamea came fourth out of the eight teamscompeting.

Without the excellent spirit, team commitment andsupport of the teachers and adults ourachievement wouldn’t have been possible. Ourscore was a testimony of the effort that went inover the week. We are looking forward to hostingthe 2011 TOSI Tournament here in Karamea nextyear.
