OPENING ACCLAMATION

Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

The Celebrant may say:

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid:

Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly

love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

OPENING PRAISE

Shine, Jesus, Shine

1. Lord, the light of your love is shining In the midst of the darkness, shining

Jesus, Light of the world, shine upon us Set us free by the truth you now bring us,

Shine on me, shine on me.

Refrain: Shine, Jesus, shine, Fill this land with the Father's glory.

Blaze, Spirit, blaze, Set our hearts on fire.

Flow, river, flow, Flood the nations with grace and mercy.

Send forth your word. Lord, and let there be light.

2. Lord, I come to your awesome presence, From the shadows into your radiance.

By the blood I may enter your brightness, Search me, try me, consume all my darkness ;

Shine on me, shine on me.

3. As we gaze on your kingly brightness, So our faces display your likeness.

Ever changing from glory to glory, Mirrored here may our lives tell your story;

Shine on me, shine on me. words and music: Graham Kendrick. © 1987 Make Way Music/ASCAP. CCLI # 2801902.

America the Beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain,

For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain!

America! America! God shed his grace on thee

And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet Whose stern impassioned stress

A thoroughfare of freedom beat Across the wilderness!

America! America! God mend thine every flaw,

Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife.

Who more than self their country loved And mercy more than life!

America! America! May God thy gold refine

Till all success be nobleness And every gain divine! words: Katharine L. Bates. Music: Samuel A. Ward.

The Word of God

FIRST READING: 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10 A Reading from the Second book of Samuel.

1All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, "Look, we are your bone and flesh. 2For some time, while Saul was king over us, it was you who led out Israel and brought it in. The

LORD said to you: It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler

over Israel." 3So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and King David made a

covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. 4David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5At Hebron he

reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and

Judah thirty-three years. 9David occupied the stronghold, and named it the city of David. David built the city all around

from the Millo inward. 10And David became greater and greater, for the LORD, the God of hosts,

was with him.

PSALM: Psalm 48

1 Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised; *

in the city of our God is his holy hill.

2 Beautiful and lofty, the joy of all the earth, is the hill of Zion, *

the very center of the world and the city of the great King.

3 God is in her citadels; *

he is known to be her sure refuge.

4 Behold, the kings of the earth assembled *

and marched forward together.

5 They looked and were astounded; *

they retreated and fled in terror.

5

6 Trembling seized them there; *

they writhed like a woman in childbirth,

like ships of the sea when the east wind shatters them.

7 As we have heard, so have we seen,

in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God; *

God has established her for ever.

8 We have waited in silence on your loving-kindness, O God, *

in the midst of your temple.

9 Your praise, like your Name, O God, reaches to the world's end; *

your right hand is full of justice.

10 Let Mount Zion be glad

and the cities of Judah rejoice, *

because of your judgments.

11 Make the circuit of Zion;

walk round about her; *

count the number of her towers.

12 Consider well her bulwarks;

examine her strongholds; *

that you may tell those who come after.

13 This God is our God for ever and ever; *

he shall be our guide for evermore.

GLORIA PATRI

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *as it was in the beginning, is now,

and will be for ever. Amen.

SECOND READING: 1 John 1; 2:1-2

A Reading from the First letter of John.

1We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with

our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life — 2this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that

was with the Father and was revealed to us — 3we declare to you what we have seen and heard

so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and

with his Son Jesus Christ. 4We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. 5This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him

there is no darkness at all. 6If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in

darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; 7but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the

light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all

sin. 8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess

our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all

unrighteousness. 10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in

us.

6

1My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does

sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2and he is the atoning

sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

SEQUENCE HYMN (VS 1/2) O God, our help in ages past (St. Anne) (H 680)

GOSPEL: Mark 6:1-13

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

7

1[Jesus] came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him.2On the sabbath he began to teach

in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, “Where did this man get

all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by

his hands! 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas

and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. 4Then Jesus said

to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin,

and in their own house.” 5And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands

on a few sick people and cured them. 6And he was amazed at their unbelief.

Then he went about among the villages teaching. 7He called the twelve and began to send

them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8He ordered them to take

nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9but to wear

sandals and not to put on two tunics. 10He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there

until you leave the place. 11If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you

leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” 12So they went out and

proclaimed that all should repent. 13They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who

were sick and cured them.

THE SERMON - Fr Marc Dobson

THE NICENE CREED All say together

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

8

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The people kneel as they are able

A period of silence is kept

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

In peace, we pray to you, Lord God.

Silence

For all people in their daily life and work;

For our families, friends, and neighbors, and for those who are alone.

For this community, the nation, and the world;

For all who work for justice, freedom, and peace.

For the just and proper use of your creation;

For the victims of hunger, fear, injustice, and oppression.

For all who are in danger, sorrow, or any kind of trouble;

For those who minister to the sick, the friendless, and the needy.

For the peace and unity of the Church of God;

For all who proclaim the Gospel, and all who seek the Truth.

For [N. our Presiding Bishop, and N. (N.) our Bishop(s); and for] all bishops and other ministers;

For all who serve God in his Church.

For the special needs and concerns of this congregation.

Silence

Hear us, Lord;

For your mercy is great.

We thank you, Lord, for all the blessings of this life.

Silence

9

We will exalt you, O God our King;

And praise your Name for ever and ever.

We pray for all who have died, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom.

Silence

Lord, let your loving-kindness be upon them;

Who put their trust in you.

Celebrant adds a concluding Collect

Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on

earth: Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage we may always be supported by this fellowship of

love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy.

We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our intercessions are acceptable through the

Spirit, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Deacon or Celebrant

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Minister and People

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Then facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant continues

Celebrant

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father

Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. In fulfillment of his true promise, the Holy Spirit came down

from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them and to lead them into all truth; uniting

peoples of many tongues in the confession of one faith, and giving to your Church the power to

serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel to all nations.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the

company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Celebrant and People

SANCTUS

(Scholtes)

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow’r and might,

heaven and earth are filled with Your glory.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow’r and might,

heaven and earth are filled with Your glory.

Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest.

Hosanna! Hosanna in the highest.

Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

The people stand or kneel

Then the Celebrant continues

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had

fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your

only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to

you, the God and Father of all.

12

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect

sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and

when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat:

This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and

said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and

for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and

thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the

holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully

receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day

bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of

the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYER Celebrant

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

People and Celebrant

Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.
