July is free paper month. One way we can understand history is by searching through old newspapers. Newspapers highlighthistoric milestones. One of the earliest newspapers was the roman Acta Diurna said to be started by Julius Caesar. Thefirst newspaper in America was printed by Richard Pierce and edited by Benjamin Harrison in Bostonon September 25th of 1690.

Brief history of the Community Shoppers Guide, Otsego, MI. The Shoppers Guide was founded and published in 1940 by Howard Bargwell. He did all the workby hand. The paper was distributed once a month to approx. 1000 Otsego residents for free. The paperchanged ownership through the years, and was bought in 1946 by Mack Bennett. He increasedcirculation into Plainwell and delivery to once a week, distributing to approx. 3500 residents. In 1970computerized typesetting was offered and was purchased to improve the publication. Circulation wasincreased to 8500 residents. In 1974 due to the high costs of the postal service, the Shoppers Guidestarted its own delivery system. In 1975 it relocated to the current location downtown Otsego. RonBennett took ownership of the paper in the early 1980’s and after retiring in 2001, passed ownershipto his son, Marty Bennett. The Community Shoppers Guide is now a 3rd generation owned company.

Why Settle?“I press on toward the goal …” Philippians 3:14

A fifty year memory comes to mind as I writethese words. Having returned home from atrack meet I ran in, my mother asked, “Well,how did you perform?” I replied, “I could havedone better.” She asked, “Then, why didn’tyou?”

Too often we settle for less than our best effort.It is true in every field of endeavor … education,music, athletics, business, church, government,our work, our profession, our relationships. Ihave heard people say, “When I retire I’m goingto sit back and do nothing.” Are you kidding?One of the reasons I enjoy writing these articlesis that it keeps me on the growing edge. Itwould be easy for me to simply go to my filesand pull out old messages and repeat them inthis column. If so, I would be settling.If we are not moving forward, progressing,improving; then it can be said of us we areregressing. This is especially true in theChristian life. As believers in the living Christ,mediocrity should not be in our vocabulary.Examples of mediocrity from Scriptures include:• The Elder Brother (Luke l5)• The One-talent Servant (Matthew 25)• The Foolish Maidens (Matthew 25)• The Priest and the Levite (Luke 10)

In the above verse (Philippians 3:14), ApostlePaul is saying he wants to be all Christ wantshim to be. I like the way Eugene H. Petersonsays it. “… don’t get me wrong: By no means doI count myself an authority in all of this, but I’vegot my eye on the goal, where God isbeckoning us onward – to Jesus. I’m off andrunning, and I’m not turning back” (TheMessage).I think my mother was right. Why settle foranything less than my best for God?Peace to you and please join us for worship thisSunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

Christopher wasa member of the First Baptist Church ofPlainwell and in his leisure time he en-joyed woodworking, reading and cross-word puzzles. On March 28, 1952 at theCooper Baptist Church he married Mari-lyn Kelly who survives. Also surviving arehis children Chris (Anita) Smit of Alfred,ME, Mark (Nancy) Smit of Plainwell, Lau-rel (Tim) Marsh of Kalamazoo and LonSmit of Paw Paw; 9 grandchildren; 7 greatgrandchildren; a sister, Lynn (Fred) Yagerand a sister-in-law, Judy Smit. He waspreceded in death by his parents and abrother Herman Smit. Private serviceswill be held at a later time. Burial tookplace at Ft. Custer National Cemetery,Augusta.
