As the builder of the Florida East Coast Railroad (FEC) in the late 1800s, it would be appropriate for Henry Flagler to travel in style – and well he did, with not only one luxurious personal rail car but a total of six, to accommodate wealthy vacationers as well. Numbered 90 through 95, the cars were built in 1888 by Jackson and Sharp Co. of Wilmington, Del., for use on Flagler’s private train. The closest car is at the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, while his personal “rolling hotel suite,” FEC No. 90, is on personal loan to the Indiana Transportation Museum. “While most private cars during the 1880's and 1890's were paneled in dark varnished oak or mahogany, FEC No. 90's interior has the bright, sunny look of its Florida home base,” the museum reports. “All interior walls are paneled in the finest satin wood and framed with intricately hand carved blonde mahogany. Empire ceilings are painted in two-tone green and decorated with an elaborate gold leaf floral pattern. “Carpeting, curtains, and upholstered furniture designs reflect the decorative tastes of the period and are color coordinated with the ceiling. Chandeliers and lamps are made of bronze and fitted with cut glass globes. An unusual feature of the car is a working fire- place of onyx and bronze located in the dining room.” FEC No. 90 remained on the FEC line until the 1950's, when it was purchased by Ike Duffey, president of the Central Indiana Railroad. Collector/restorer Reuben Darby of Hagerstown, Maryland, bought the car in the 1960's after Duffey's death, and embarked on a meticulous $110,000 restoration. In 1969, Darby delivered FEC No. 90 to Anton (Tony) Hulman, Jr, best known for buying the dilapi- dated Indianapolis Motor Speedway immediately after World War II. The car remained in Terre Haute until it was placed on permanent loan to the Indiana Transportation Museum. Learn Teamwork from Pirates! Pirates had to be a

team as well as a crew.Otherwise they wouldsuffer quick and harshdefeat in battle. So itonly made sense thatwhen Prosperity Bankwanted to bring theiremployees together fora corporate team-build-

ing event, they contacted the Pirate Ship Black Raven!Using the 72-foot steel vessel as a floating confer-

ence room, the Prosperity Bank Team came aboard toexperience professionally fun activities that reinforcedtheir goals as a company, brought their employees to abetter understanding of one another, and fostered a truesense of teamwork. Coached by Jumpin’ JoJo, DaisyDrake and Oly Mackerel, the Prosperity Bank Teamwas guided through three exercises to help each mem-ber of the crew understand the strengths their teamowned as a whole. Not to mention, each exerciseopened new doors of communication for all of the par-ticipants. The employees of Prosperity Bank watchedtheir coworkers survive “life-or-death” scenarios byusing wit and each other. By the time the activitieswere complete, the Black Raven had found a safe har-bor to let those aboard refresh their minds and theirstomachs!

The journey’s hiatus included a wonderful dinnerprovided by Aunt Kate’s Restaurant in Vilano Beachwith riverside dining. For their successes as a team, allaboard were entertained on the return voyage byMagpie Maggie, Jonas Krew, Kathy McCarthy andWilliam Mayhem. The cruise back to the home dockof the city marina was filled with jokes and songs thatonly reinforced the wonderful team that had been builtby the dedicated and enthusiastic crew on the first halfof the journey.

So, the moral of this story? Let pirates take overyour corporation’s next event if you want professionalresults and one-of-a-kind entertainment that go hand inhand!

“Yes,” the doctor replies. “Well they’ve suddenly gone away,” Murray says. “So what’s the problem?” “I think I’m going deaf.”

UF Confident of Partnership on Historic Properties

University of Florida Vice President Ed Poppell is“genuinely excited in our ability to put together a part-nership that will advance the cause of historic preser-vation,” City Manager John Regan says.

The university and city have been negotiating apartnership agreement since the university under statemandate took over management of 34 state-owned his-toric properties here, including the Colonial SpanishQuarter. The city is hoping it will continue manage-ment of the Spanish Quarter and Government Housethrough agreement with UF.

City officials are looking to multiple smaller venuesfor exhibits during our 450th commemoration period, rather than one large exhibit hall.

The weak economy will create yet another citybudget shortfall, this one $2 million in a combinationof holding the millage rate at 7.5 and increases in cityexpenses.

City Clerk Karen Rogers has retired after elevenyears with the city, the last four as chief record keeper.

Wine with DinnerI was nervous the night my husband and I brought

our three young sons to an upscale restaurant for thefirst time. My husband ordered a bottle Of wine withthe meal. When the waitress brought it, our childrenbecame quiet as she began the ritual uncorking.

She poured a small amount for me to taste, and thenour six-year-old piped up, “Mom usually drinks a lotmore than that!”

If you lend someone $20, and never seethat person again; it was probably worth it.

Why I Don’t Play Golf A golfer is playing a round of golf with his buddies.

On the sixth hole, a hole over water, he proceeds toflub nine balls into the water. Frustrated over his poorgolfing ability, he heaves his golf clubs into the water, and begins to walk off the course.

Then all of a sudden he turns around and jumpsback in the lake, his buddies apparently thinking he isgoing to retrieve his clubs.

When he comes out of the water he doesn’t have hisclubs and begins to walk off the course.

Then one of his buddies asks, “Why did you jumpinto the lake?”

And he said, “I left my car keys in the bag.”

If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
