Welcome to the second half or 2017! The first six months have flown by here in Philly! We’ve seen so many great events and there’s more to look forward to as we breeze into the month of July. Let’s begin by looking at the highlights for the 25Annual #July4thPhilly celebrations! On July 29, join in the festivities as the annual Wawa Hoagie Day honors and salutes those in the armed forces. From 12-2PM, you can receive a free hoagie lunch at Independence Mall (5& Market Sts). Don’t be discouraged if the line is long, it moves quickly! June 30, there’s a free concert from The Philadelphia Orchestra followed by Fireworks on the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing! The show starts at 8PM; be sure to bring a blanket! Then, on July 1, The Food Trust and Wawa Welcome America have teamed up to bring you a special edition of Night Market Philly, happening in the Spruce Hill neighborhood (40& Walnut Sts). The event goes from 6-10PM and you’ll want to bring your appetite with you. On July 2ⁿ, you can drop in for free admission to The Barnes Foundation anytime from 10AM-5PM. July 3, from 12PM-7PM come down to enjoy the Philadelphia Historic District Block Party! There will be food, games, activities and more! Right after the block party ends, stick around for the annual Philly POPS on Independence concert! Finally, July 4, you can start your day with the Celebration of Freedom Ceremony at Independence Hall immediately followed by the Independence Day Parade. Once you’ve had your fill, make your way over to enjoy the Party on the Parkway and grab your seat for the July 4Concert, with Mary J. Blige as the headliner. You can wrap it all up with the post show fireworks knowing that you’ve celebrated the birthday of our country, right here in the city where it happened! The rest of July has plenty of neighborhood festivals such as the Lancaster Ave Jazz Fest or Taking it to the Street. For events in the park you can check out the Schuylkill Independence Regatta or the Clark Park Music and Arts Festival. We would love to see all of your photos on social media, so be sure to #PHLEvents when you’re out and about this month. Our office prides itself on our ability to assist you with your special event needs, and we’d love to hear your feedback on how we are doing. We have big news to share Philadelphia! Our office has finally revised and
updated the Special Event Application. It has been redesigned to reflect the
“one-stop-shop” that we aim to be. This means, that all of the separate
applications are now combined into one: Demonstrations, Parades and City
Services and/or Space Use. Beginning July 1, 2017 you will be able to fill out
and email the application online; however, you must still submit payment in
the form of a check or money order. All other departmental applications will
remain the same. For example, any event requiring a street closure, you will
still have to fill out the separate Streets Department Festival Street Closure
Application along with our application.
Included in the updated application is a new section that focuses on the
strategy your event will be using when it comes to waste management and
environmental sustainability. The City of Philadelphia is working towards
becoming a Zero Waste and Litter Free city by 2035. Along with the
implementation of a Zero Waste and Litter Free Cabinet, our office has already
begun implementation of these practices and want to encourage event
organizers to adopt sustainable practices when planning their events. Over
the next year there will be additions to the Waste Watchers program, so if
your event meets a certain level of waste diversion, we can give you the
prestigious title of being a “Zero Waste Event”. As with any new initiative,
there will be questions and bumps along the way, but we are here to help and
guide you through the transition. We are excited to see a greener and more
sustainable event industry here in Philadelphia!
For more information visit our website and go to the application page where
you can view the new application and additional brochure with details on Zero
Waste Event Options. Have a great Fourth of July
celebration and we’ll hear from you soon!
summer in the city is like. Everything from outdoor
events in the park to neighborhood festivals, Philly is hot
right now! U.S. News & World Report has ranked
Philadelphia the second best U.S. vacation destination,
and the rest of summer has plenty of events lined up and
ready for you to enjoy! Be sure to stay
up to date with the events calendar!

The photos on this page highlight some of the biggest
events that took place in June! The header photo features
the last showing of lanterns from the Chinese Lantern
Festival at Franklin Square Park. The top left photo is
from the Street Soccer USA tournament, held for the 2
year here in Philly at the Art Museum Steps. Beneath that
photo, we have handmade baskets from the 42 Annual
Odunde Festival. The event attracts over 100,000 people
over the course of the day. Finally, at the Manayunk Arts
Festival, we captured a local fireman grooving on his
saxophone providing festival goers with some smooth
jazz tunes as they strolled down Main Street, appreciating
all of the various wares and goods from vendors.
