KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS On Oct. 2,1881, a small group of men met in the

basement of St. Mary’s Church on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut.

Called together by their 29 yrs old parish priest, Fr. Michael J. McGivney.

These men formed a fraternal society that would one day become the world’s strength in solidarity and security through unity of purpose and devotion to a holy cause.

They vowed to be defenders of their country, their families and their faith.

These men were bound together by the ideal of Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of the Americans, the one whose hand brought Christianity to the New World.

Their efforts came to fruition with the incorporation of the Knights of Columbus on March 29,1882.

What happened when Our Lord said: "This is My body . . . this is My blood"?

When Our Lord said, "This is My body," the entire substance of the bread was changed into His body; and when He said, "This is My blood," the entire substance of the wine was changed into His blood.

(a) Christ could not have used clearer, more explicit words than "This is My body." He did not say, "This is a sign of My body," or "This represents My body," but, "This is My body." Catholics take Christ at His word because He is the omnipotent God. On His word they know that the Holy Eucharist is the body and blood of Christ.

Page 67: 7. Review of Admission & Formation Course

Did anything of the bread and wine remain after their substance had been changed into Our Lord's body and blood?

After the substance of the bread and wine had been changed into Our Lord's body and blood, there remained only the appearances of bread and wine.

(a) Because the appearances of bread and wine remain in the Holy Eucharist, we cannot see Christ with our bodily eyes in this sacrament. We do see Him, however, with the eyes of faith. Our bodily eyes, moreover, do not deceive us when they see the appearances of bread and wine for these appearances really remain after the Consecration of the Mass.

TRANSUBSTANTIATION In 1215, 349 years earlier, the

4th Lateran Council consecrated the word transubstantiation as expressing correctly the Christian doctrine of Christ’s real presence by conversion of the substance of bread into the substance of His Body.

A. Introduction In the Bible we find the divine revelation and the true history of the Life of Christ among us.HoweverThe Bible takes us only up to the early day of Christianity and Christ dares to walk the roads of Palestine. Is there no other way to become part of the Life and Work of the Lord? The great conciliar constitution on the church helps us find the answer.

The Catholic Church Founded by Christ: Christ founded the church through Peter. “I call you Peter the Rock – upon this Rock I

The Marks of the Church

The church is One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic. The Catholic Church is “One”, for all her

members profess the same faith, have same sacrament, have the same sacrifice and obey the same visible head, the Pope.

The Catholic Church is “Holy” for Jesus Christ who is all-holy founded Her and gave the means to make men good and holy, thereby giving saints to every age.

The Catholic Church is Catholic or Universal; for she is for all men of all times and nations, and is extending over the whole world.

Page 88: 7. Review of Admission & Formation Course

The Marks of the Church The church is One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic.

The Catholic Church is Apostolic for she was founded by Christ on Peter and the Apostles. She still ruled by their lawful; successor, the Pope and the Bishops, and still believes and teaches the doctrine of the Apostles.
