Parents and School ‘in Sync’ A strong trusting relationship between home and school is so important for a child. The two major learning environments and influences for a child need to be in harmony if the educational outcomes are to be maximised for each of our students.

Children need consistency between parents, and between home and school. Consistency of expectations between home and school provides a child with a clear understanding of what is required. Good habits are learned through reinforcement.

Trust between home and school increases the child’s respect for both parents and teachers. By their positive talk, parents reinforce the appreciation of a child for teachers. Teachers also must be careful not to criticise parents … even in the staffroom. A negative culture towards parents or school develops when gratuitous criticism is offered by those adults who are most influential in the formation of the child – i.e. their parents and teachers.

It is very much in the parents’ interest to know their child’s teachers and to work together to help the child reach his or her full potential. Parents have the duty to ensure that the other inputs in the lives of their children

are consistent with their own messages. If they fail to do so there is the danger that, no matter how dedicated they are, their own efforts will be undercut by the competition. Children are wired to imitate those who take an interest in them … for better or for worse. Children imitate whoever they spend time with, not only in classrooms, but on Facebook, on DVDs, and on mobile phones.

Such a relationship requires a high level of communication between home and school, between teachers and parents. There needs to be effective structures for regular communication in place, as well as a desire to be proactive, foresee each other’s need for information, and back each other up.

Emails between home and school: Emails are like people. They have good and bad points. At their best they are great communicators. At their worst they cause misunderstanding, fail to communicate emotional nuances, and by their broadcast qualities can irreparably harm a reputation.

Communication is a good thing. The more communication the better, provided the communication is positive or constructive and appreciated by the other party. When staff and parents use emails to communicate we all need to observe some common sense protocols that allow us to maximise benefits and avoid the collateral! The advantage of email's speed is also its shortcoming. Friendships can be lost by too much haste and too little thought before pressing ‘send’.

Common sense guidelines for emails The following guidelines serve well. Many are standard etiquette for email communication. Parents may wish to adopt them in guiding children in use of electronic messaging in all its forms.

Greet your recipient by name - it's polite.

Emails are at their best with content that is informative. Avoid emails that have emotional overlay. Avoid negative emails. Pick up the phone instead.

Group emails have the potential to waste many people’s time if they are not pertinent. It is courteous to avoid timewasting emails, and even joke emails broadcast to groups.

Avoid emails for topics in the least confrontational, and for any issue that could at all possibly be taken the wrong way. Pick up the phone instead.

We must never email words we wouldn't say to a recipient's face.

We must not write about third parties using emotion charged words they would be uncomfortable to read about themselves. Interpret behaviour in a most charitable light and stick to the facts.

If an email is received that is contentious, neither staff nor parents should ever reply to such emails. A face to face discussion is needed.

Emails of any sensitivity must not be forwarded to a third party without permission of the sender. This is obviously all the more important if there is distribution to a group.

Brevity is the strength of email but it can be all too easily mistaken for impoliteness. Before pressing ‘send’, if it is not an email response, recheck the text and add some niceties.

Sign off with your name and contact details - it's helpful.

Junior School Production – Grandad’s Wardrobe After months of preparation and rehearsals, the 2012 Junior School production, ‘Grandad’s Wardrobe’ is about to take to the stage in the Multi Purpose Hall on September 13 and 14. I am really looking forward to the production and know that it will be a memorable event for the audience and for the cast and crew.

Tickets are selling fast for the Friday evening performance and so, I would encourage parents, grandparents and friends to log on to the online booking site and reserve their seats!

I take this opportunity to wish all students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 the very best as they finalise their preparations and present the production next week! Many thanks must go to the Junior School staff led by Mrs Kathy Walsh for their many hours of dedication in developing this original concept for the production. I also wish to extend my sincere thanks to the many people who have assisted with costumes and props – your generosity does not go unnoticed and helps provide

our Junior School students with performance opportunities they will long remember!

From the Campus Coordinator - Wodonga

Final Academic Assembly The Final Assembly for Term 3 will be held in the Multi-Purpose Area on Friday, 21 September at 12.00 pm. Students for Term 3 will be recognised across their subjects for:

Academic Improvement

Service to the College

Our regular assembly scheduled for Thursday, 13 September will not go ahead as all students will be involved with the Matinee performance of the School Production, either as cast members or audience members, and will be replaced by the Final Assembly on the 21st.

Book Week Parade Last Thursday the Wodonga Campus held our annual ‘Book Week Character Parade’. The event was very well supported, with students turning out in a fantastic collection of characters from their favourite books or identities they saw as ‘Champions’. It was really pleasing to see the length the students went to for the event and highlighted the love our students have of books, and the enjoyment they got out of dressing up. I also thank the many parents who turned up for the parade. Hot Lunches Thank you to our parents who continue to support the College with our hot lunches. The positive attitude and generosity of time that our parent

community give in running programmes such as this helps to develop the giving culture that underpins the Trinity community. All monies raised continue to support the Trinity Kitchen Garden Programme, which is continuing to be a great learning opportunity for our children. Again, thank you to all parents involved - your efforts are very much appreciated!

Early Dismissal – Friday, 21 September A reminder that on the last day of term, students will be dismissed at 2.10 pm, rather than the regular 3.10 pm dismissal. This is to coincide with the other local Wodonga schools. The only bus service that will remain unchanged is the Falls Creek Bus Service, which will continue to pick up at 4.10 pm.

VPS Athletics The VPS Division Athletics Carnival will be held at Alexandra Park on Monday, 10 September. By now all students selected to compete will have received a note detailing their events, travel arrangements and event details. I wish all our athletes the best during this competition.

Car Park I remind all parents that the dirt road leading into the College grounds from the asphalt car park is off limits and for STAFF ONLY. I have noticed a number of parent vehicles travelling through the grounds dropping off and picking up their children. I remind all parents that this is a staff only area and that no parent vehicle should be in this area, unless given direct permission from Mr Fairall. If you have any queries or are unsure of this directive, please come and speak with College staff.

Prep Class News Last week the Prep students enjoyed sharing stories about their Dads and talking about the reasons why they love them. The students enjoyed shopping at the Fathers’ day stall on Friday and worked hard to make beautiful cards to give to their Dads.

‘A Little Bit of Blue’ On Wednesday 29 August the Prep-3 students attended a puppetry performance at ‘The Cube’ in Wodonga. The students enjoyed the show called ‘A Little Bit of Blue.’ The story was about an elderly lady, Mrs Mavis Hooley, who discovered things were going missing from her home. Mavis hired a detective to catch the thief. The students’ role was to help the detective solve the case.

From the Director of Studies

End of Preliminary Course Examinations Students in Year 11 are preparing for the very important end of course exams in their Preliminary HSC Course. These exams take place across Week 8 and begin on Monday, 10 September. The students are approaching their exams with seriousness and have been plaguing their teachers for advice about revision strategies; this is advice that their teachers are very happy to impart! Many students are producing well-structured and carefully researched summary sheets to assist them in their examination endeavours, and others are submitting draft material to their teachers for comment.

We wish them very well in their study and look forward to seeing the fruits of their labours over the next week or so.

Story Telling and Cake A big thank you to all the volunteer story tellers who kindly gave up their time to read their favourite children’s story to the Junior School students during last Thursday Story Telling and Cake afternoon. The event was a perfect way to celebrate national Literacy Week.

The students loved listening to the stories and having the opportunity to escape into the world of story – their “Neverland”. The day wa s made even more memorable thro ugh the efforts of our cake bakers. Through their wonderful contributions the entire Junior School was able to celebrate reading with a piece of cake [or two].

Head Lice I write to inform parents that there have been several cases of head lice reported to me from across the Junior School within the last week. Can I ask that all parents check their children’s hair for any sign of head lice and treat accordingly. In some instances repeated treatment may be required.

The NSW Department advises that: Head lice are only found on the human head. They are not found on any other part of the human body, although there are other types of lice that do infest other parts of the human body. Nor are they found on any other animal. Head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding, carpet or anywhere else in the environment. Treating anything other than the human head does not eradicate head lice. Before you choose a treatment for head lice, consider the following:

Make sure that the heads you treat actually do have head lice and do not treat unless they do!

Do not treat babies or a scalp that is irritated or inflamed.

Do not let product into eyes. There is no preventative treatment available. While it is tempting to "do"

the whole family, unless they actually have head lice you may be contributing to the problem of resistance.

Any product applied to the head should be used with caution, particularly on young heads. READ THE LABEL.

Use your common sense when selecting a head lice treatment. There is nothing natural about pouring a product on a head!

Some essential oils, including tea tree oil, can trigger a reaction in some people. Tea tree oil is a proven antiseptic, however, its efficacy as a head lice treatment has not been demonstrated.

Many products have a very strong smell. A strong smelling substance left on the hair for any length of time may trigger a reaction.

Certainly try a commercial head lice preparation, but read the label first and apply strictly as directed. Again, in desperation it can be tempting to change the dose in an effort to kill the lice. However, increasing the dosage does not enhance efficacy of treatment products.

Apply product to every strand of hair and work through, leave for 20 minutes, and comb out with a good quality lice comb.

If dead lice are found, the product has worked. But you must re-treat in seven days to catch nymphs that have emerged from unhatched eggs.

If you find live lice, the treatment probably hasn't worked. Either use another product with a different active ingredient (read the label) OR try the comb and conditioner method.

Reduce transmission by tying hair back and braiding. Regularly check your children's hair. Young girls growing up often become

very independent about their hair care and it can become difficult to convince them that it's important for you to continue checking their hair. Try to persist or show them how they can check their own hair when they wash it in the shower or bath.

Keep a good quality head lice comb in the shower so that every time anyone washes their hair they use the comb. The more folk know about simple management methods the easier it will be to reduce the problem. But it takes time!

Do not use insecticides, methylated spirits or kerosene on your child's head.

Maths In Trade Students in Years 9 & 10 visited Albury campus of TAFE last week, to put some Mathematics into practice. Students learned that Pythagoras might have known a thing or two about making roof trusses, they learned how calculating the volume of a cylinder might be used in the automotive industry, ratios in hairdressing, arithmetic and reconciling balance sheets to keep the customers and bosses happy in hospitality and tourism and how much energy was needed to power a 60 watt globe and heat a jug of water. It was a great day and our thanks and appreciation goes Riverina Institute of TAFE, Albury, for organisation. In particular, thanks to Alison Smith and Craig Kidd.

P & F News

Fathers' Day Breakfast On Friday of last week the College conducted its annual Chapel service to commemorate Fathers’ Day followed by a cooked breakfast.

It was lovely to see the children with their dads at the Chapel service and then enjoying the Fathers’ Day Breakfast together.

We would like to thank the House family for their generosity in providing the rolls for our delicious Egg & Bacon rolls and to all the helpers who braved the weather on the morning to ensure we had a great breakfast.

Fathers’ Day Stall 2012 – Albury Campus The Annual Fathers’ Day Stall was held on Wednesday, 29 August, and we are happy to say it was a great success. We wish to thank the exceptionally generous families who donated gifts for the stall. Special thanks go to Jenny McMillan, Kaz Gehrig, Tanya Trebilcock, Hilary Petts and Chris O’Loan for their assistance, and the wonderful parents who donated their time by assisting with the stall. We hope all Fathers had a relaxing day and enjoyed receiving their specially selected gift/s. A Very Big Thank You!

These will be held at Trinity College Albury in November. Any interested students should attend on a regular basis the Wednesday afternoons’ try‐out in the French room after

school or see Monsieur Gorge at lunchtime.

The DELF system has 6 levels, in line with the Cadre européen commun de

référence pour les langues (CECR). All European countries have put these examinations in place so that workers who move across national frontiers are able to have their language competence assessed effectively. For example, there is an equivalent Diploma in English which can be taken by Non‐English speakers from other countries.

The levels are as follows:

DELF A1/A2 Basic User

DELF B1/B2 Independent User

DALF C1/C2 Proficient User

Students in the NSW system who are studying French may like to think of it like this: Year 9 students could access A1 level, Year 10 A2, etc. Levels C1/ C2 are more usually taken by students at University level or by students who have returned from a year in France. In recent years some

excellent Trinity Year 8 students have received their DELF A1 certificates!

These certificates, leading to a Diploma in Communication in French, are recognized worldwide and, as well as being a very satisfactory addition to any CV, are a great aid to finding a job while travelling overseas or applying for work in Australia which demands communication skills. We recommend them to any interested student.

Monsieur GORGE

Question of the week: Which AFL team's song is the tune to the French national anthem?
