That was a timed writing… Today, we’re going to start a longer process that starts with planning.


Read Student A example essay on why cats are better than dogs.

Put a star next to the thesis and underline each topic sentence.

What do you notice about this essay? What did the writer do well? What can they improve on?


Journal title: My Outline

Take a few minutes to choose a topic and write it in your journal. Make a school issue the central focus of your essay. A couple ideas: Some argue that summer vacation is no longer

necessary as Americans are not busy working the farms during the summer months. Take a stance on this issue, discussing how summer vacation is beneficial or, instead, how summer vacation is hurting students.

Some argue about homework. While homework is common in most schools, some contend that it shouldn't be. Discuss the concept of homework, exploring whether it is beneficial and how engaging in large amounts of homework could actually take away from family time.


Next, write the Roman numerals I, II, and III, spread apart down the left side of the page. Next to each Roman numeral, write the main ideas that

you have about your topic, or the main points that you want to make.

Under each Roman numeral, write A, B, and C down the left side of the page. Next to each letter, write the facts or information that

support that main idea.

Basic Characteristics:

A theme may be stated or implied

Theme differs from the subject or topic of a literary work in that it involves a statement or opinion about the topic

Not every literary work has a theme

Themes may be major or minor

A major theme is an idea the author returns to time and again; it becomes one of the most important ideas in the story

A minor theme is an idea that may appear only periodically


+

It is important to recognize the difference between the theme of a literary work and the subject of a literary work.

The subject is the topic on which an author has chosen to write

The theme, however, makes some statement about or expresses some opinion on that topic

1) Themes are expressed and emphasized by the way the author makes us feel. By sharing feelings of the main character, we also share the ideas that go through his mind

2) Themes are presented in thoughts and conversations. Authors put words in their character’s mouths only for good reasons. One of these is to develop a story’s themes. The things a person says are frequently on their mind. Look for thoughts that are repeated throughout the story.

3) Themes are suggested through the characters. The main character usually illustrates the most important theme of the story. A good way to get at this theme is to ask yourself the question, what does the main character learn in the course of the story?
