Dear Sir:

motorist guide. After receiving a copy I only Wished that I had one

the entire vacation perfect;

The Green Book not only sewes the Negro motorist and tourist

WILLIAM H. GREEN

NEGRO MOTORIST EDITOR

GREEN BOOKINTRODUCTION

The idea of “The Green Book” is to give the Motorist and Tour-ist a Guide not only of the Hotels and Tourist Homes in all of the

large cities, but other classifications that will be found useful whereverhe may be. Also facts and information that the Negro Motorist can

use and depend upon.

There are thousands of places that the public doesn’t know aboutand aren’t listed. Perhaps you might know of some? If so send in theirnames and addresses and the kind of business, so that we might pass it

along to the rest of your fellow Motorists.

You will find it handy on your travels, whether at home or insome other state, and is up to date. Each year we .are compiling new

lists as some of these places move, or go out of business and new busi—

ness places are started giving added employment to members of our race.

When you are traveling mention “The Green Book” so as to

let these people know just how you found out about their place of

business. If they haven’t heard about This Guide, tell them to get in

touch with us.

If this Guide is useful, let us know, if not tell us also, as we

appreciate your criticisms.

If any errors are found, kindly notify the publishers so that

they can be corrected in the next issue.

A CANADIAN TRIP

ByBAXTER F. JACKSON

It was Sunday early in July that we left the city with the voicesof the Southernaires coming in over the car’s radio. We struck out on

the West side Drive and passing across the Hendrick Hudson T‘oll Bridgethe long ribbon—like road stretched before ‘us and the surrounding terri—tory assured us that we were getting into open country at last. Thefine weather, the sun pleasantly warm and the breezes kind made motor—

ing with the top down something well worth all the sacrifices of the

past year.

To attempt to describe New England with its pretty farm housesand white birches is something for a greater master of descriptionthan yours truly.

We rolled along without any event until the urge for food stoppedus about 6 RM. After a tasty meal we moved along until about 9 RM.which time found us in Hanover, N. H. Without any trouble we founda place that fitted our budget and went to sleep in a pleasant room withtwin beds and a shower. The place was fine and we needed the twoblankets.

The next morning we went about seeing the Dartmouth CollegeCampus and the Town, sending a few postcards to mark the progressof the trip.

Our next stop was in Derby Line, a little Village in Vermont, to

pick up some films, as a result of packing too hurriedly. Next came theCanadian border and customs declarations. The process was simple andin a short time we were on our way. On seeing the fine road in frontof us we began to make a mental calculation as to how long it wouldtake ‘us to get into Quebec. However, the road being a back one whichwas our choice to avoid traffic, succeeded in accomplishing just that butleft much to be desired as a road; however, we pulled out of the badspots soon enough and with the motor singing and the radio doing thesame in French and English and with the pure air and sunshine we

soon forgot about the bad stretch of roadway and promptly settleddown to almost run out of gas which brought us face to face with the“Imperial Gallon”. We learned we needed less of this than the U. S.kind but as we did not speak enough French it cost us a little spilledgas, and as this was sort of a back road the peOple did not speakEnglish “too mneh”.

We reached Levis about 5:30 RM. and crossed on the Ferry toQuebec by about 6:30. We found a nice hotel and bathed and dressed,—then we were on our way to the Chateau Frontenac for dinner by 8:30.

Finding the dining room closed, we went into the grill and had a delic—10118 meal served overlooking Dufferen Terrace. After dinner we strolledalong to see What the Town had to offer.

The next day we made an early start, picked up the car and hiredone of the chauffeur-guides to take us around. These chauffeur-guides

are licensed by the Province and are thoroughly capable in every res-

pect. They gave us a history lesson that will be well remembered. I

believe I learned much more about Quebec than any other town I have

visited. There are so many things that are different and quaint,——it is

a worthwhile place to visit. Everywhere the people were most courteous

to us. If we asked a question and we were not understood (which was

seldom), they would not leave us until they definitely found out what

was wanted. On one occasion I was taken a block out of the way by a

young man to a police officer who then directed me where I wanted to

go. When offered a reward for his kindness he refused and thanked me

for asking him and went about his way,——it‘ seemed as if he was doing

his civic duty. (P.S. He did accept an American cigarette though, as

they are pOpular there. If you have been there you know why,———if not,

ask someone).

free goods, but not having a loose hundred dollars you can see I had

nothing to worry about. However it is still the best way /to beat an

argument if any. We reached the customs at Jackman, Maine and went

through with no trouble.

Coming into the State of Maine we moved along the Pine Tree

trail. It is as beautiful a bit of forest-land as can be seen anywhere

and enough to hold your interest thoroughly.Evening brought us to our day’s destination,——a little cottage on

the road to Bar Harbor. A good night’s rest made us ready and eager

to eat almost anything including the tablecloth. The meal was excellent

and I do remember the good whole milk and lovely rich cream. Our

hostess explained that her husband ran a dairy. She was proud of her

farm—products, and justly so.

Our purpose in going to Bar Harbor was to ascend Mt. Cadillac

some 1532 Feet high. We had a perfect day for the view was clear and

I made so many “filter shots” that I thought in the} end my film would

look like a meteorological survey but it came out well enough and the

filters just cut the haze enough to make a clear film. The tourists

we met were pleasant and easy talkers. We exchanged views on many

interesting subjects. Pleasant as it was we had to leave to continue our

journey to Old Orchard our next stop- We made a mistake in the road

and came in on the wrong side of town andl got tied up in a race track

crowd,——reminded me of Fifth Avenue. we arrived, notwithstanding,

in time for dinner. We then went out on the boardwalk, had a pleasant

stroll and enjoyed some of the amusements that were offered.

The next morning we drove to a tourist camp that we had passed

on the way, known as the Danish Village. The architecture had im—

pressed me and I thought it would look good on film. The houses or

cabins were built as they are in Denmark, with the crooked windows

and doors, and with names over each. house to give the impression that

such people as Hans Christian Anderson and other famous Danes were 92

letting you their homes for the? night. It is a swell idea and thhe placeseemed to make you feel that you were not in the good old U. S. A.,at least until you looked at the roadway that passed close by.

,Back in Old Orchard my companion, a venturesome young man,

decided to go for a swim and tried to encourage me to accompany him

but I am not of the hardy sort and decided against it but did go downto the beach with him. After a dip and a few strokes he decided that

there was something in my point of view and that he would save his

swimming for later in the summer.

After two pleasant days here we were on our way to Portsmouth,N. H., arriving there in a few hours. Spent a short time looking for the

address where we were to stOp. We rolled up to Mrs. Blank’s homewhere we met some friends who came in from New York and were juststarting their vacation. There is a quiet restful calm about the placethat puts you in the mood for enjoying a rest, and if a man digs his

grave with his teeth, as I have been told, I hope I can dig mine withMrs. Blank’s cooking. In the evening it was nice to sit around andtalk to Mr. Blank who had spent some of his younger years in the Navy.I can assure you that you cannot lend your ear to a more absorbingstory-teller.

The days passed there all too rapidly and before we knew it we

were on our way home, and so to save for another year and I hope a

longer and as pleasant a vacation.
