Learning the whole handfrom the opening lead

After the bidding and the opening lead on thisBlue Ribbon Pairs hand from the second qualify-ing session, Peter Weichsel was able to tell a ki-bitzer just what his left-hand opponent held.

Board 4 ♠ 10 9Dlr West ♥ K Q 4 3Vul Both ♦ K J 9 7 3

Kyle Larsen, North, led the ♠10, and Weichselturned to his kibitzer and told him, “Declarer has4-2-0-7, he doesn’t have the ♠9 and he doesn’thave either red ace.” Then he played LOW andallowed the ♠J to win. His aim was to hold de-clarer to 11 tricks even if he took the successfultrump finesse -- but he thought the odds wereagainst declarer’s finessing in clubs.

Once Weichsel played low on the first trick, declarer of course could make five. Go to the boardwith the ♥A, discard a heart on the ♦A, take thesuccessful finesse in trumps, and the ♠8 would bepromoted on power because of the doubleton 10-9 in the North hand.

But Weichsel was right -- declarer didn’t takethe club finesse for fear of a spade ruff. Instead hecashed the ace and led a second club to Weichsel’sking. Since he couldn’t do anything about it any-way, he returned a diamond, declarer discarding aheart as he won with the ace in dummy.

But now Weichsel’s low play at trick one paidoff because Larsen’s 9 was of equal value withthe king and queen. As a result, declarer had tolose two spade tricks, making only four, whichwas a good score for Weichsel and Larsen.

Sometimes having a poor set can lead to un-expected moments of reclamation. Playing Bergenraises was the impetus to open 1♥ on this board.

East led the ♥4. Declarer won, cashed the ♣Aand ruffed a club, crossed to the ♠A and led an-other club. East ruffed in with the 8 -- can youblame him? A spade ruff was followed by the toptrump, which drew the rest of the outstandingtrumps. That was worth all the matchpoints.

Neat defensive maneuverBy Barry Rigal

Judy Tucker found a neat defensive maneu-ver on this deal from the Blue Ribbon semifinals.

North-South are not due to make more than ninetricks in 3NT on the lead of either minor, and 4♥ has noplay. But 4♠, the contract at our table, was quite promis-ing.

On the lead of the ♦10 my partner played the ♠J tothe queen, and Judy won to shift to the ♥9. When de-clarer inserted the 10, Gail Greenberg took her ♥Q, anddown went declarer.

Should declarer get the position right? I think theargument is that if the ♥Q is right, 4♥ may be making, soputting up the king is a big position. As against that, shift-ing to a heart from Q-9-(x) is a big play.

The contract of 2♥ doubled and redoubledusually yields either a top or a bottom, and so itproved on this deal from the first session of theBlue Ribbon qualifying. Surprisingly, there weretwo tables (maybe more) which ended in thisstrange spot on the following auction:West North East South

When my partner was declarer against KaySchulle and John Mohan, the defense led the ♥K.My partner won this, finessed in diamonds andled a spade to the jack and queen. Back came adiamond and the ♠10 went to the ace. A secondtrump from Mohan left the defense in control, andthey actually emerged with plus 600 for 63 out of64 matchpoints.

When Tony Forrester was declarer, he got thesame excellent opening lead of the ♥K. He wonthis to take the diamond finesse and advance the♠10. When the defense ducked (an understand-able error) he was able to run this to the queen.Back came a diamond, and he finessed to play asecond spade. East won the ace and played the♥J, which held the trick. Next came a third spadeand Forrester took the king, cashed the ♥Q andled the ♠J, ruffed by East, who was now endplayedin this three-card ending:

♠ --♥ --♦ A♣ K 10

♠ -- ♠ --♥ -- ♥ --♦ K 9 ♦ --♣ Q ♣ A J 5

♠ --♥ 7♦ 10 6♣ --

The point is that if East had a diamond to lead, the suit would be splitting. East is marked with the♣A from West’s failure to double 1♥ on the firstround of bidding.

Smooth operatorWhen it comes to major pairs events, David

Berkowitz and Larry Cohen are probably the toptwosome over the past two or three years. In theBlue Ribbon Pairs, they were first in Atlanta in1995 and second in San Francisco in 1996. Onegood reason for their success is Cohen’s outstand-ing card play. This deal from the first semifinalsession of the Blue Ribbon is a case in point.

With no ruffing value in either hand, Berkowitzand Cohen did well to play game in notrump ratherthan their 4-4 spade fit.

East led the ♣3, which Cohen took with the 8.With the finesse working, the spade suit providedfour tricks. As Cohen ran the spades, West dis-carded two low hearts, East one club.

Reading the cards perfectly, Cohen took theheart finesse through West. On the third heart trick,East had to find a discard, and whatever he didwas going to be wrong.

If East pitched a club, reducing his holding totwo cards, Cohen could cash the ♣A and get outwith a club, forcing East to break the diamond suit.As long as Cohen played for the diamond honorsto split, which he was going to do, he could playthe suit for no losers.

If East discarded a low diamond, Cohen couldhandle that, too, by simply playing a diamond tothe king and ducking on the way back. East, win-ning the ♦Q perforce, would then be forced tolead away from the ♣K for Cohen’s 11th trick.

In practice, East did discard a diamond andCohen played it just right. Plus 460 was good for58 out of 64 matchpoints.

Wool pullerHugh Ross made a sneaky play that worked

out well for him on this deal from the first semi-final session of the Blue Ribbon Pairs. Ross wasplaying with Peter Nagy.

West led the ♣3, which Ross read as low froma three-card holding. Taking the small risk thatEast had been dealt ♣A K 8, Ross played lowfrom dummy. East, convinced that Ross held the♣8, thought for a while before finally playingthe king. When Ross did not follow with the ♣8,East thought his partner had led a singleton club,so he banged down the ace.

Ross ruffed and played his top three trumps. On the third round, West discarded the ♥8. Rossgot out of his hand with his singleton heart, andWest rose with the ace. At that point, he had nogood card to play. A heart return would put Rossin dummy with all those good club tricks, soWest got out with the ♦9. Ross put up the ♦Kfrom dummy, and the defenders were helpless.Ross let the diamond return run to the 8 indummy and he claimed for plus 420.

But what if East had figured out what wasgoing on and put in the ♣7 at trick one? SaidRoss: “I don’t even want to think about it.”

Top performer to win Lou Herman Trophy

The player with the best overall individual per-formance record at this Fall NABC will win the LouHerman Trophy.

The trophy was donated in 1951 by Sally Lipton, formerly Mrs. Lou Herman, in memory of her hus-band. Lou Herman (1908-1950) was a Houston jew-eler who lived in New York at one time.

Mrs. Lipton was a member of the ACBL officestaff in New York and an ACBL tournament director.

The record performance for the Herman Trophywas set by Michael Rosenberg, who won 445.77 points-- all in nationally ranked events -- at the Fall NABCin San Francisco last year.

Zia won 412.75 points at the same tournament andwas second.

Jeff Meckstroth was the first player to score 400or more points at an NABC, racking up 407.77 pointsat the 1995 Fall NABC in Atlanta. That record lastedonly one year.

Although the auction was not reported, the fi-nal contract was four spades by South down three, minus 150 for N/S.

The Facts: The Director was called to the tableafter the play. Declarer won the opening diamondlead in hand, led the heart five to East’s eight, ruffed the heart return low (noting the fall of West’sace), thought for several minutes and then led aclub toward dummy’s king-jack. West, who hadhis cards in his lap, raised them to eye level andtook a moment to locate the club three. As he with-drew the card from his hand he said, “I’m sorry.”Declarer, who had intended to play the king fromdummy, was convinced by the apology that Westmust not have the ace. (Why would he apologizefor thinking if he had something to think about —whether to win the trick?) Declarer thereforeplayed the club jack and went down three, minus150 for N/S.

While this table had been on Vugraph at thetime of the incident, none of the commentatorshad noticed West fumble. The Director ruled un-der Law 73D1 that there had been an inadvertentvariation of tempo from which declarer drew con-clusions at his own risk; the table result was al-lowed to stand.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s rul-ing. While denying any suggestion that West’s in-tent had been to deceive, South said that, in hisview, one apologized in these situations in orderto protect the opponents — not merely because ofa fumble. Therefore, the apology had affected hisunderstanding of the reason for the fumble. Weststated that he had not meant to play out of tempo, but that there had been a mechanical problem forwhich he apologized. As there had been numer-ous helpful exchanges between the players dur-ing the match, he just wished that South had in-quired about the apology, so that he could haveexplained that he was just fumbling for the clubthree. West’s team captain observed that this wasa momentary lapse on the tenth day of the Cham-pionships by a player somewhat fatigued andwhose mind was wandering. North then stated thatit was a difficult defensive hand and West mightnot have been quite clear in his mind what wasthe correct defense. (In fact, he should have risenwith the club ace and given his partner a dia-mond ruff.) While there could be no suggestionof malice on West’s part, players do their bestto win for their side, deliberately or not. It wasclear that South’s correct play of the club kinghad, however inadvertently, been jostled by theapology.

The Committee’s Decision: During the delib-erations the Chief Director was asked several timesto expound on the effects of, and the differencesbetween, Laws 73D1 (a player may take an infer-

ence from his opponents’ manner and/or tempo ofbidding or play at his own risk) and 73F2 (if aninnocent player is deceived by the manner or tempoof bidding or play by an opponent who could haveknown at the time that his action could work to hisbenefit, the Director shall award an adjusted score). The Committee agreed that West’s apology itselfconfirmed that there had been a fumble, but that, under pressure to play promptly, West would nothave had time to appreciate the possible implica-tions for declarer of his apology. It was also deter-mined that, according to E/W’s signaling methods,East’s return of a small heart at trick three indi-cated a desire for a diamond ruff. On the otherhand, the combination of the fumble and the apol-ogy did confuse South. West’s own testimony sug-gested he had no bridge reason for the fumble, making Law 73F2 applicable. The Committee con-curred with South’s (unchallenged) assertion thathe would have made his contract had he playedthe club king, but as a matter of equity they alsobelieved that South was not entitled to the full scorefor four spades making. The Committee decidedto adjust the score under Law 73F2, but to invokeLaw 12C3 (allowed in international competition, but not in the ACBL) to restore equity. N/S wereassigned seventy five percent of the score for fourspades made four, plus 420, and twenty five per-cent of the score for four spades down three, mi-nus 150. The Committee also requested someguidance from Laws experts on situations in whichan apology (or no apology) for a breach of tempowould be desirable.

The ControversyThis case sparked a controversy over the in-

terplay between two provisions of Law 73, one(73D1) which states that players choosing to acton an opponent’s variation in tempo or mannernormally do so at their own risk and the other(73F2) which states that, if there is no demonstrablebridge reason for a variation, and if the player couldhave known at the time that it could work to hisbenefit, an adjusted score should be awarded. Thequestion is, which provision should apply in thesecircumstances?

While there are honest differences of opinionover this issue among law framers, law enforcers, and students of the law alike, my own view is thatthe player taking the inference should act as thoughhe is doing so at his own risk (expecting to keephis score), while the player who varies his manneror tempo should expect to be held accountable forhis action and not be surprised to have his scoreadjusted whenever he cannot demonstrate a legiti-mate bridge reason for it and it is judged that hecould have known at the time that it could work tohis advantage. It is then up to a Director or Ap-peals Committee to evaluate each situation inde-pendently, to determine which of the provisions(or possibly both) applies. Of course West’s re-mark should be treated just like any other varia-tion, since it is an extraneous act which might in-fluence declarer’s play.

But here declarer’s three-minute study beforeplaying to trick four almost certainly contributedto West’s inattentiveness, making him (declarer) acontributor to the problem. He then chose to at-tach bridge meaning to West’s remark when youor I might have interpreted it as just the opposite— that the fumble had nothing to do with bridgeand had no implication for West’s card holding. Inaddition, while there was a possible bridge reasonfor West’s fumble (he could have been thinkingabout playing the club ace), and although his re-mark could have concealed that from declarer, theCommittee found that there was not sufficient timefor West to appreciate these implications of hisremark for declarer.

What this all suggests to me is that declarershould have been held accountable for his ownactions, and N/S assigned the result which occurredat the table, just as the Director ruled. Similarly, E/W should have kept their score. If, however, it hadbeen determined that West could have known the

effect which his remark could have on declarer, then E/W’s score could have been adjusted to mi-nus 420.

Wolff’s Problem (and Solution):What approach should be taken to the general

problem of players making extraneous commentsat the table? Clearly, if West had said nothing de-clarer would have been on his own, living or dy-ing with the result of his decision. Bobby Wolff, many time World and National Champion andmember of USA II, thinks that all such commentsare improper and should be eliminated from the(high level) game. He favors automatic score ad-justments for extraneous remarks at the table ifthey result in a problem for an opponent (andmaybe even if they don’t).

This approach has several drawbacks. For one,it would create an undesirable antisocial atmo-sphere at the table. (Bobby proposes that it applyonly to “major” events, including World Champi-onships and the later rounds of major NABC+events.) Players would no longer be at liberty tobe polite, or cordial, during the play of a board. Ifa player inadvertently bumped the table, fumbledwith a card, or committed some other inadvertentact he would be forced to either ignore the effectof his action on the other players or risk beingplaced in jeopardy for his remark.

Another drawback is that, once a remark slipsout (as it might for many of us) it would create ahost of “double-shot” scenarios for an opponentwho wished to take advantage of the situation. Thiswould be even worse at knockout scoring, whereany score adjustment, even to only one side, nec-essarily accrues (in part) to the opponents.

A third problem is that a player who hesitatesinadvertently would be forced to make a decisionwhether to “excuse” his action. Failure to say any-thing could place his side in jeopardy for mislead-ing the opponents if there was truly nothing tohesitate about, especially if he “could have knownat the time . . . .” But equally unfortunately, sayingsomething would create a prejudicial situationagainst him. In addition, it might not be possibleto make this decision quickly enough — beforethe next hand played. This would result in the samepredicament as saying nothing. And what if aplayer gives the outward appearance of wantingto excuse his fumble, but doesn’t actually say any-thing? Does that count as a remark? You betcha!

Wolff says that “fumbling carries a price, andthat’s as it should be.” You lose if you fumble, youlose if you say “Sorry,” you lose if you blurt out“Umph” as you catch yourself, and you even loseif you simply grimace. Is this how you want toplay bridge?

We need to recognize and accord a place tothe social aspects of the game, even at the highestlevels. Players are responsible if they contravenethe laws, but reason and judgment must be ap-plied in addressing each incident within the con-text in which it occurs. Wolff is concerned thatCommittees are not equipped to handle such inci-dents in a prudent and consistent manner. He wantsstrict laws, applied in a uniform manner, to removeany judgment factor from Directors and AppealsCommittees alike. Is this bridge in the twenty-firstcentury? What do you think?

They qualified easily for the BlueRibbon final -- until they noticed that theyhad been credited with a score that reallyhad been earned by their opponents. Theywent to the director and reported the mis-take. Suddenly they had 29.5 on the boardinstead of 60 -- and they missed qualifyingby 83 hundredths of a matchpoint.

The Nick Nickell team, eliminated in the semi-finals last year after three consecutive victories inthe Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams, will be look-ing to start another streak here at the Fall NABC inSt. Louis.

Nickell & Co. (Nickell, New York; RichardFreeman, Atlanta; Jeff Meckstroth, Tampa; EricRodwell, Naperville IL, and Bob Hamman andBobby Wolff, Dallas) won Reisinger titles at theFall NABC in Seattle in 1993, in Minneapolis in1994 and in Atlanta in 1995.

Along the way, the team -- with non-playingcaptain Edgar Kaplan -- won the Bermuda Bowlin Beijing, China, in 1995.

“Both our streaks (the team also won fourSpingolds in a row) are over,” noted Wolff, “andwe can’t have that. We’ll just have to play better.”

History of the ReisingerThe event is contested for the Reisinger Tro-

phy (the Chicago Trophy until 1965). It is a six-session open team-of-four event scored by board-a-match with two qualifying sessions, two semifi-nal sessions and two final sessions. It was con-tested as a four-session championship until 1966.

The event began in 1929 as the North Ameri-can Open Team Championship and the prize wasthe Chicago Trophy, donated by the AuctionBridge Club of Chicago. (In 1928, the open teamcompetition was for the Harold S. Vanderbilt Cup.)

The Chicago Trophy was replaced in 1965 bythe Reisinger Memorial Trophy, donated by theGreater New York Bridge Association in memoryof Curt H. Reisinger.

Reisinger (1891-1964), of New York City, wasa principal patron of contract bridge and the Ameri-can Contract Bridge League in the early years ofboth.

Reisinger was a great-grandson of Anheuserand a grandson of Busch, co-founders of the brew-ery from which he inherited great wealth. Thatwealth enabled him to become a stalwart financialsupporter of the game, as well as a noted philan-thropist on a far larger scale.

In the years when there was often a struggleto meet the League’s modest payroll, Reisingerwas often called upon and never failed to help witha loan or an outright gift. His support made pos-sible several early contract bridge tournaments, clubs and books.

Among the positions in which he served weredirector of the United States Bridge Association, president of the Greater New York Bridge Asso-ciation and chairman of the ACBL. In 1953,Reisinger was named ACBL Honorary Member.

Looking back• The only all-women’s team to win the

Reisinger -- or any other major open team event -- was Sally Young, Jane Jaeger, Paula Ribner andKay Rhodes.

They tied in 1947 with John Crawford, TedLightner, George Rapee and Sam Stayman; andRobert Appleyard, Simon Rossant, Morris Berliantand M.A. Lightman.

Young, Life Master #17, was the first womanto earn Life Master rank. Among her successeswere three additional wins in the Reisinger, sevenwins in the Women’s Teams, four wins in theWomen’s Pairs, five wins in the Mixed Teams andone win each in the Fall Open Pairs and Fall MixedPairs. She died in 1970.

Ribner and Jaeger, both now living in Florida, are Gold Life Masters who remain active players.Jaeger was a member of the winning squad in theGrand National Teams in 1973, its inaugural year.

Jaeger and husband Lewis were the first mar-ried couple to attain Life Master rank -- #74 and#94, respectively -- and Lewis was a member ofthe winning Reisinger team in 1934. Together, theywere second in the Vanderbilt in 1956.

Jaeger recalls that the 1947 Reisinger was“pretty close, as I remember. We were on pins andneedles for a while.”

Ribner remembers that the four “were all verygood friends. We all played with each other.”

Rhodes, a Silver Life Master who died in 1996,recalled in a 1995 interview that the three-way tie

• Fifty-one years ago, at the Fall NABC in Hol-lywood FL, Edith Freilich became the 13th womanto win the Reisinger. Her teammates were MitchBarnes, John Crawford and Al Roth.

Freilich and Roth repeated their victory in1952. This time, their teammates were HaroldHarkavy and Tobias Stone.

• The history of the Reisinger is dotted withback-to-back wins but only the Nickell squad hasthe three- and four-peat. The team of JohnCrawford, Charles Goren, Charles Solomon andSally Young won in 1937 and 1938 -- the samesquad, plus B.J. Becker, also won in 1939.

• Oswald Jacoby won his first Reisinger in1955, playing on a team with his son Jim -- theonly father-son combination to win the event.

• Jacoby’s second Reisinger win came in 1983when he was invited to join the team of EdgarKaplan, Norman Kay, Richard Pavlicek and BillRoot.

Jacoby was battling cancer but he was a vitalpart of the team effort that won the Reisinger.

On this deal, Jacoby was plus 450 at his tablewhile Pavlicek-Root scored plus 100 at the othertable. Pavlicek doubled 4♠ and they beat the con-tract one trick.

Jacoby played 4♠ undoubled and made fivewithout any warning about the trump suit.

• John Crawford holds the record for mostReisinger wins with 10. His victories spanned fourdecades: 1937, 1938, 1939, 1942, 1946, 1947,1953, 1954, 1956 and 1961.

• Helen Sobel and Sally Young share the recordfor most Reisinger wins by women with four.

• Sobel was the last woman to win the Reisinger-- her victory came in 1957.

• A multi-national team won in 1987. Teammembers included Zia, Jaggy Shivdasani, BillyCohen and Ron Smith.

Said Zia: “The best thing about this was thatwe had a black (Smith), a Jew (Cohen, who is aCanadian citizen), an Indian (Shivdasani) and aPakistani (Zia) playing together.” Zia is a Muslimand Shivdasani is a Hindu.

“It’s good to show how bridge can bring to-gether people from such different backgrounds,”he added. “It just shows a special magic about thegame of bridge.”

• A multi-national team won again in 1989.Zia was on the team which included Sam Lev, Is-rael; Michael Rosenberg, U.S. but formerly of Scot-land; Chris Compton, U.S., and Mark Molson,Canada.

• Molson scored a rare double at the Fall NABCin Lancaster PA that year. He took top honors inthe two premier events of the tournament -- theReisinger and the Blue Ribbon Pairs.

• The record margin of victory in the Reisinger-- 10 full boards -- was set in 1966 by Kaplan,Kay, Robert Jordan and Arthur Robinson.

• A handful of ACBL presidents and membersof the board of directors have won the Reisinger:Charles Solomon, Jeff Glick, Waldemar vonZedtwitz, Bobby Wolff, Lew Mathe, PeterLeventritt, John Gerber, Ira Corn, Don Oakie andEdgar Kaplan.

The win for Carteaux, who recently retiredfrom the wholesale electronics business, was hisfirst North American championship. He is activein District 8 and Unit 154 politics and has beentournament chairman for northern Indianaregionals for seven years.

Carteaux, who bowled professionally in theFifties and Sixties, has played bridge for about 12years and not long ago topped 5000 masterpoints.

Adams plays bridge for a living from his basein the Atlanta area. He has more than 19,000masterpoints.

Childs pointed out that his Senior KO win wasactually his second national title -- the first was inan intercollegiate dairy cow judging contest. Childshas a degree in animal husbandry specializing indairy cows, but says he is “allergic to too manythings on a farm to be a farmer.” He runs a glassbusiness in Little Rock and also raises Englishspringer spaniels.

Cohen and Said, who played together, eachwon his third North American title. Cohen andRenee Mancuso won the IMP Pairs at the SummerNABC in Boston in 1990. In 1995, the native ofCanada reunited with some old friends fromMontreal to win the Open Swiss Teams at the SpringNABC in Phoenix.

Said racked up his second win in the SeniorKO. His first was in the inaugural event at the 1994Fall NABC in Minneapolis. Jabbour and Arnoldwere his teammates then.

Said and John Russell won the Silver RibbonPairs at the Spring NABC in Dallas earlier this year.

As they did the previous day, the Carteauxquintet fell behind early, trailing by 10 IMPs afterthe first quarter. Levine and company picked upanother 13 IMPs in the second quarter to lead atthe half, 68-45. Carteaux cut the margin by only 1IMP in the third quarter and was down 95-73 with16 boards to go.

The #1 seed was too strong for their oppo-nents in the final quarter, however, giving up only1 IMP over the first 15 boards while scoring 59themselves. The only major swing occurred on thefinal board, when the winners were firmly in con-trol.

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTHPass Pass 3♠

Dbl Pass 4♥ (1) Pass4♠ (2) Pass 5♣ (2) Pass6NT (1) Pass 7NT All Pass(1) Lengthy break in tempo(2) Break in tempo

The Facts: 7NT made seven, plus 2220 for E/W.Both the 4♥ and 6NT bids were made after agreedlengthy breaks in tempo. The Director was called afterthe 7NT bid. At the end of the auction West explainedthat 4♠ had been Blackwood and 5♣ showed one ace.West stated that the entire auction had been slow. TheDirector ruled that pass over 6NT was a logical alterna-tive and changed the contract to 6NT made seven, plus1470 for E/W.

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s ruling. E/W were a new partnership that had been formed thatmorning. East stated he was not sure that 4♠ wasBlackwood but he did know that 5♣ would be taken aseither one ace, or a cuebid that showed the ♣A. Eastknew he was on shaky ground as to exact meanings ofagreements in high level auctions but that either inter-pretation his partner chose would match his hand. Westchose to bid 6NT because he was unsure of the meaningsof other bids over 5♣. East bid 7NT because aside fromthe ♣A he had already shown, he had two kings that hadnot in any way been disclosed in the auction.

The Committee Decision: The Committee discus-sion focused on whether Blackwood followed by slammeant partner could not bid more. Eventually this linewas abandoned because the Committee concluded that4♠ was not clearly Blackwood and therefore the part-nership was not involved in a final decision over theBlackwood auction. The Committee decided that a slow6NT bid did not convey any different information froma fast 6NT bid. The Committee decided to allow the 7NTbid and changed the contract to 7NT made seven, plus 2220.

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTHPass 1♥

Pass 1♠ Pass 2♣Pass 3♦ Pass 3NTPass 6♠ All Pass

The Facts: 6♠ made six, plus 980 for N/S.North’s 3♦ bid was not Alerted. After the auctionand before the opening lead, North announced thatthere had been a failure to Alert and that 3♦showed a singleton. East called the Director andstated she would have doubled 3♦ had the bid beenAlerted. East also said that she played the samemethods as North (that 3♦ was a splinter in sup-port of clubs) but did not want to ask at the timeand clear up a misunderstanding. The Directorruled that there was no misinformation becauseEast was aware of the possible meaning of the 3♦bid. The table result was therefore allowed to stand.

The Appeal: E/W appealed the Director’s rul-ing. East, West and South attended the hearing.East stated that after the hand was played Northsaid she would not have bid 6♠ if the 3♦ bid hadbeen doubled. East wanted the Committee to con-sider the possibilities that if 3♦ had been Alertedand doubled that (1) the final contract of 6♠ maynot have been reached; and (2) West may havedoubled the final contract for a diamond lead. TheCommittee inquired about E/W’s agreements re-garding lead-directing slam doubles and found thatthey had none. East also stated that the Directortold her that she should have called him at the timeof the 3♦ bid, but that she did not want to for fearof disclosing a misunderstanding. South stated thatshe did not Alert 3♦ because she didn’t think theyplayed splinters over minors; she bid 3NT becauseshe believed her partner had diamonds. Althoughboth were experienced players, N/S had not playedtogether for seven years.

The Committee Decision: The Committeefound that N/S had no agreement that 3♦ was asplinter and that there was no violation of proce-dure. North and South had both bid according towhat they thought their agreement was, and Northhad appropriately disclosed her version of theagreement before the opening lead. North wasapparently playing a private convention known toher (and East) but not to South. East had all of therelevant information before the opening lead. TheCommittee agreed that West would have been veryunlikely to double 6♠ even had the auction beendifferent. The table result of 6♠ made six, plus980 for N/S, was allowed to stand. The merit ofthe appeal was discussed and a close decision wasreached to return E/W’s deposit.

Regarding the table Director’s statement to Eastthat she should have called him during the auc-tion, the Committee consulted with a Senior Tour-nament Director. He disagreed strongly with thetable Director’s instruction. The appropriate timeto call the Director would have been at the end ofthe auction, when North announced the failure toAlert.

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTHPass Pass

1♥ 2♣ 4♥ Pass (1)Pass Dbl All Pass(1) Break in tempo

The Facts: 4♥ doubled went down two, plus500 for N/S. The Stop Card had apparently beenused. E/W stated that South broke tempo for afew seconds more than ten. N/S stated that thetempo break was no longer than ten seconds. The Director ruled that the double would not beallowed and changed the contract to 4♥ downtwo, plus 200 for N/S.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s rul-ing. E/W did not attend the hearing. The factswere in dispute. Specifically East’s use of theStop Card and South’s pause after the bid. N/Sboth agreed that East had taken a long time tobid 4♥. North said that when East bid 4♥, hesimultaneously put his bid, and the Stop Card,on the table. He then immediately removed theStop Card. South did not see the Stop Card atall. When she was aware that a bid had beenmade, she paused for what she considered to bethe requisite time and then passed. South saidthat she considered her pass automatic. Therewas no reason for her to break tempo. North saidthat his style was to always have four spadesfor a takeout double unless he had a very goodhand. When he overcalled 2♣ it was with theintention of doubling hearts at whatever levelthey were bid for takeout. He considered hisactions to be automatic.

The Committee Decision: The Committeeasked the Directing Staff to describe the correctuse of the Stop Card. They were told that thecorrect procedure is to place the Stop Card andthe bid on the table. ACBL rules are that the nextplayer should try to bid after ten seconds. Theskip-bidder does not “control” his LHO by useof the Stop Card. Having dealt with that issue, the Committee then determined that, on the factsas presented, and given E/W’s absence, theycould not establish that a break in tempo be-yond the ten seconds had occurred, theDirector’s ruling notwithstanding. There wasunanimous agreement that, even had there beena hesitation, a player of North’s ability wouldunquestionably have doubled 4♥ at his secondturn. There was no logical alternative to thataction. The Committee therefore restored thetable result, 4♥ doubled down two, plus 500 forN/S.

The luck factorBy Alan Beir

If you can’t be good, at least be lucky. Playingwith John Morris in the second final session of theLife Master Open Pairs, we got to 3NT on this deal.

Dlr: East ♠8 2Vul: None ♥Q 9 7 6 4 3

1♠ Pass2♦ Pass 3♣ Pass3NT All Pass

North, with no outside entry, disdained theheart lead and opted for the ♣9 as his openingshot. That went to the queen, king and ace. It ap-peared that I needed the ♠A onside or to make awinning guess in hearts on the automatic heartswitch by South.

Rather than running diamonds in the futile hopethat the expert defenders would discard poorly, Iimmediately led a spade to the king and South’s ace.Back came the ♥10, as expected, and I played thejack, misguessing, as usual. When North won the♥Q, it looked like down two or three.

After long thought, however, North misread theposition and returned a club, taken by dummy’s jack. Now I ran the diamonds, reaching this end position:

♠8♥9 7 6♦---♣---

♠7 ♠Q 10 6♥K ♥---♦4 ♦---♣5 ♣8

♠J 9♥A♦---♣10

On the ♦4, I pitched the ♣8 from dummy, squeezing South in three suits. South finally dis-carded the ♣10, so I cashed the ♣5 for my secondsqueeze on South. Making five! This lucky deal, among others, helped us to finish eighth in theevent.
