7.2 Best Practices
Best Practice I
Title of the practice: Activity Based Learning
One of the notable best practices of Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering has been
Activity Based Learning.
Goal
The institution is committed to providing a holistic teaching-learning environment to its students
that goes beyond the standard curriculum by means of various co-curricular activities based
learning, aided by this practice helps in realizing knowledge, application and skill based
understanding.
The Context
The institution takes pride in empowering the students through “Activity Based Learning”. The
college faculty and students have responsibly engaged in different and sometimes challenging
circumstances, fulfilling their role in realizing knowledge, application of knowledge and skill
based understanding. Such activities have given impetus to experiential learning, and added
enthusiasm in student community. They have also contributed to enriching and expanding the
quality of academic work across specializations through valuable experience and insights gained
by means of these activities.
The Practice
College’s philosophy of education emphasizes inculcating innovative thinking and problem-
solving skills into the students through activities like Automobile Design and Manufacturing,
Hackathon, Robotics, Project Competition, Workshops, Guest Lectures by industrial experts
and eminent professors, Industrial Visits etc. Each programme has at least one student chapter
of professional bodies, a total of 10 student chapters which have been conducting these
activities.
These student chapters of eight programmes of engineering are listed below:

Title of the practice: Soft Skills Training
Goal
The main objective of Soft Skills training is to develop awareness about the importance of
interpersonal skills, which include a wide spectrum of personal traits and abilities including
trustworthiness, adaptability, personal integrity, leadership, time management, attitude, team
building and influencing skills, etc.
The Context
In order to make the technical skills of engineers valuable and productive, certain soft skills are
required in most of the jobs today. Hard skills may look impressive on the resume, but the soft skills
set them apart from the rest of the candidates having similar technical knowledge.
The Practice
Soft skills and competencies in communication are imparted to the students through subjects like,
Communication Skills and Business Communication & Ethics subjects in Sem II and Sem V across
all programmes. However, considering the growing need for good interpersonal skills, additional
Soft Skills training is imparted to students by the institute in the 1st year (Foundation course), 2nd
year (Personality development) and 3rd Year (Pre-placement package).
While evaluating these training programmes, emphasis is laid on practical learning through team-
based activities. Providing in-depth feedback on the interpersonal and behavioral aspects, which were
displayed in the course of these activities, provide for a continual and practical learning experience.
Realizing this vital need, our institute has been ensuring that the soft skills training is taken up in
a sustained manner for the maximum benefit of our students.

Best Practice III
Title of the Practice : Improvement in Engineering Pedagogy through Faculty Development
Programmes/Coursera Certification Courses
The quality of academic teaching is decisively determined by the qualifications and competencies
of the teaching staff, which also include engineering pedagogical capabilities.
Goal
The institution has increasingly focused their attention on the pedagogical training programmes for
the teaching staff. These programmes have been aiming for an understanding of engineering
pedagogy, the purpose of which is the targeted design of technical and technologically specific
teaching and learning.
The Context
For students in engineering science courses, a future engineer’s ability to accomplish social
communicative processes in modern structures of technology and service has become a focal point
of engineering pedagogical considerations. Thus, the focus of this view of engineering pedagogy is
the development of teaching concepts for the preparation of future engineers for their leadership roles
in changing structures of technology and service.
The Practice
The prime task of the institution is to provide academically trained professionals. This approach
improves the quality of academic engineering education. In view of this, the following training
programmes were carried out during the academic year 2019-20:
1. Effective Pedagogy in Class Room Teaching for Engineering Education by Dr. Ramkumar
Rajendran, IIT Bombay.
2. Courses through Coursera
3. DJSCE-IBM training on:
i) Python programming
ii) Introduction to DA
iii) Introduction to AIML
iv) Introduction to IOT
4. DJSCE-SAS training.
Evidence of Success
Details of the above mentioned training programmes are given below:
1. Effective Pedagogy in Class Room Teaching for Engineering Education by Dr. Ramkumar
Rajendran, IIT Bombay.
A faculty development programme (FDP) on Effective Pedagogy in Class Room Teaching for
Engineering Education under Internal Quality Assurance Cell held at the Department of
Mechanical Engineering of Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering, Vile Parle on 8th
January 2020. The FDP aims to provide opportunities to faculty members of all the branches to
enrich their teaching skill especially in engineering.
The FDP was attended by 48 participants from faculty members of Basic Sciences, Humanities,
Chemical, Electronics, Mechanical, BioMedical, Electronics & Telecommunication, Computer
Science & Engineering and Information Technology branches.

Some important and widely used Active Learning Techniques:
• Peer-Instruction (Eric Mazur, Harvard University, early 1990s)
• Think-Pair-Share (Frank Lyman, University of Maryland, early 1980s)
• Team-Pair-Solo, Problem-based learning, Just-in-Time-Teaching, Role-play, Jigsaw,
Case- based learning, Peer-review, Productive failure, Flipped Classroom …
• Pair problem solving.
• TPS, PBL, Data-based problem solving.
➢ See http://www.et.iitb.ac.in/TeachingStrategies.html
Peer Instruction is a structured Active Learning strategy, as depicted below :
Think-Pair-Share Technique:
Think: How will you incorporate active learning? List two ways of doing so.
Write down your answer, as specific as you can [~2 minutes]
Pair: Discuss you answer with your neighbor. Do a self-check of whether your activity is learner
centric, (using points on the next slide) [~3 minutes]
Share: Merge answers of the entire group [~5 minutes]
Info: Think-Pair-Share activity is an effective active learning strategy
Other Techniques:
Visualizations such as animations and simulations have been shown to provide many learning benefits, especially in STEM disciplines.
Many teachers report using such visualizations in their class. Most play or demonstrate the
animation in class, along with narrative explanation.
Ask students to:
➢ Pose problem, ask students to begin the problem solution.
➢ Ask students to complete the last 2 steps in the problem.
➢ Figure out the next step in the derivation.
➢ Devise possible reasons for an observation (shown in a video).
➢ Predict the outcome of an experiment (shown in a video/ animation).
➢ Brainstorm a list of methods to solve a design problem.
➢ Debate pros & cons of various methods
Outcome :
The discussed areas are of great benefit for the participants as the Active Learning Techniques can
be practiced in the current teaching-learning process. The participants were enlightened with the
most widely used advance techniques of Education Technology.
The following outcomes can be attained by effectively practicing these Active Learning
Techniques in Teaching-Learning process:
• Students engage in problem-solving activities during lecture.
• Students work collaboratively.
• Students are asked to “figure things out for themselves.”
• Students are asked to express their reasoning explicitly.
• Qualitative reasoning, conceptual thinking is emphasized.
• Specific student ideas are elicited and addressed.
• Students receive rapid feedback on their work.
