REJOICE! Today has traditionally been called “Gaudete Sunday.” The Latin tag is derived from Paul’s appeal in the second reading to “rejoice always in the Lord,” and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and paradox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God’s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only opti-mistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is “the season of joy.” Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

3 Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2018

December 24th Christmas Eve: 4:00PM & 8:00PM December 25th Christmas Day: 8:00AM

Parish Advent Penance Service Prepare your heart for the coming of Jesus. Join us for an Advent Penance service tonight, Sunday, Dec. 16th at 6 p.m. There will be several priests to hear your confession, and through the authority of Jesus, absolve your sins. Our God is a Merciful God! Alleluia!

Today is “Gaudete” Sunday because today’s Mass begins with the opening antiphon, “Gaudete in Domino semper” (“Rejoice in the Lord always”). Today we light the rose candle of the Advent wreath, and the priest wears rose vestments to express our communal joy in the coming of Jesus, as our Savior. The theme of the third Sunday of Advent is rejoicing in hope. Advent is a time for joy, not because we are anticipating the anniversary of the birth of Jesus, but because God is already in our midst. Christian joy does not come from the absence of sorrow, pain or trouble, but from an awareness of the presence of Christ within our souls. In today’s first reading, the prophet Zephaniah says, "Shout for joy, O Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel.” Zephaniah made this prophetic proclamation at the height of the Jewish exile when things appeared hopeless and unbearable. The instruction is repeated in the response to the Psalm, "Sing and shout for joy for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel." St. Paul echoes the same message of joy in the second reading from Philippians: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again, rejoice... The Lord is in your midst… Fear not… be not discouraged... The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all…” Paul was in prison when he made this appeal for rejoicing. In the gospel today, John the Baptist explains the secret of Christian joy as wholehearted commitment to God’s way by doing His will. A sad Christian is a contradiction in terms. According to the Baptizer, happiness comes from doing our duties faithfully, doing good to others and sharing our blessings with others. John’s call to repentance is a call to joy and restoration. Repentance means a change in the purpose and direction of our lives. Filled with joyful expectation that the Messiah was near, the people asked John, “What should we do?” He told them to act with justice, charity and honesty, letting their lives reflect their transformation. For us, that transformation occurs when Christ enters our lives, and it is to be reflected in our living in the ways John suggested.

What should we do in preparation for Christmas? This is the same question the Jews asked John. His answer, to them and to us, is the same: repent and reform your lives, and prayerfully wait for the Messiah. Our Blessed Mother, in her many apparitions, urgently calls us to more fervent prayer. Let us remember that the Mass is the most powerful of prayers. We must be a Eucharistic people, living and experiencing the presence of Jesus in our hearts. Let us remember that conversion is through Jesus, whom we encounter in the sacraments. Regular monthly Confession makes us strong and enables us to receive more grace in the Eucharist. Let us read the Bible and pray the rosary daily. Let us share our love with others as selfless and humble service. "Do small things but with great love" (Mother Teresa).

4 Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2018

All members of the Parish! You are invited to a Bible Study that is every Tuesday morning in the parish offices/ school following the morning mass. We start off with Coffee and Breakfast made by someone in the group. After finishing breakfast we read and discuss the readings for the upcoming Sunday Mass. No expertise in scripture necessary. The study ends around 9:00 am.

The main purpose is to prepare to better understand the Sunday readings in the hopes to maintain and develop a deeper relationship with God. Most in the group would say that they walk away from the study, encouraged, growth in understanding and challenged to live out the Gospel in their day to day interactions.
