Real Estate Market Trends in Tuxedo Park and Tuxedo While real estate market activity stepped back in 2017 versus 2016, it mirrored 2015 activity. Tuxedo Park Dollar Volume decreased in 2017 vs. 2016 by 39% but was still above 2015 levels. Units for single family home sales did about the same. Several larger and more expensive homes sold in the Park in 2016, which brought

levels higher. Activity in Tuxedo decreased about 13% in dollar volume, and the average selling price increased in 2017 as more expensive homes sold than in 2016. Average Sales Price for Tuxedo Park in 2017 was $1,072,623; in Tuxedo $406,504, and Orange County was $256,816. In 2017, Orange County showed increases for dollar volume and units sold of 23% and 9.81% respectively. This is good news. We cautiously predict 2018 will be a good year for both Tuxedo Park and Tuxedo, particularly for luxury properties just under and over $1M. We believe the new tax laws will foster more spending in the higher price points. While we have yet to see any significant appreciation in home

values in most price points, our agents continue to work hard analyzing both local and regional market trends and advising our clients accordingly. Our goal is for you to achieve the most efficient numbers whether buying or selling.

Every student has a role in the performing arts program at Tuxedo Park School. Whether you’re a

student in pre K or a freshman, there are opportunities to not only explore, but to master a performing art.

One of the showcase events com-ing up is the winter musical, “Once on this Island, Jr.,” featuring seventh through ninth grade students. Per-formances are scheduled for March 1 - 2 at 6:30 p.m., at Tuxedo Park School. Admission is free. Additional-ly, there is a special can’t-miss opening performance by the TPS Rhythmic Art Troupe, “Junkorkestra.”

The musical crew has taken their preparation to another level. Last month, students took a trip to Broad-way and were inspired by the profes-sional production of the musical they will be performing. Students also had the opportunity to learn more about the production by going backstage to meet the Broadway cast.

Audience members will be thor-oughly impressed with Tuxedo Park School’s production. The cast of 27 students will be supported with a student music pit ensemble, and a student-run crew.

Because Tuxedo Park School em-braces a culture of performing arts,

students are encouraged to enhance their talent through broadening expe-riences. The student body consists of students who have performed at Car-negie Hall, in Broadway productions, won state composition contests, and have been selected to all county music ensembles and national honors choirs.

The winter musical is not the only show in town. TPS offers a variety of performing arts choices. In addition to band and chorus, the faculty offer a diversity of ensembles including the tropical steel drum ensemble, the rock and jazz ensemble, the African percus-sion ensemble, as well as, the rhythmic art troupe.

Students have the option to begin learning an instrument in kindergar-ten. However, for fourth through ninth graders, participation in an instrumental or vocal music group that regularly performs concerts, is a requirement.

The middle school chorus, for example, comprised of fourth-sixth grade students, and the upper school chorus, comprised of seventh-ninth grade students, explore and perform music in varied genres, including traditional, jazz, Broadway songs, and popular music. Students learn how to increase their vocal range and dexteri-ty, learn to sing at sight, explore three-

and four-part harmony, and blend as an ensemble.

The middle school band and upper school band study and perform an exciting repertoire of music, including traditional, classical, Latin, and jazz. The bands are not limited to tradi-tional band instruments, but welcome all instruments into the ensemble. Through their participation, students improve their ability to play their in-struments in an ensemble, to perform improvised solos, and to play as a cohesive unit.

See you at the musical!

Specializing in working with retirees entails far more than just managing retirement portfolio distributions. It involves planning for sequence of return risk, as well as the timing

of Social Security benefits, retiree-specific tax planning & Medicare and Health Insurance decisions.

For many, it will mean a deep discussion of whether to, “age in place,” possibly relocate or join a Senior Community.

These are just some of the issues that retirees face. We know, because it is what we specialize in.

If you have questions about any of these areas and how they will impact your retirement and legacy plans, call us; we can help.

It’s not unusual to want to look your best, to put your best foot forward, to dress neatly and be well-groomed. Likewise, who wouldn’t mind looking younger than their age? While it may be true that it’s what’s inside

that counts, it’s what’s outside that allures, engages, and pres-ents the “inside you” to the world.

Certainly, appearances matter, but there are limits. If you think that undergoing major plastic surgery to make yourself look a bit younger or refreshed is just too much, you’re not alone. Statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery have shown that while $13 billion are spent annually in the US on plastic surgery treatments, nearly $11 billion of that is spent on nonsurgical treatments. So over 80% of all the money spent on plastic surgery, isn’t for surgery at all!

More and more of our patients are opting for nonsurgical options. There has been an explosion in alternatives to ma-jor surgery, from liquid facelifts and mini-lifts to fat-freezing body sculpting. While the development of these alternative treatments has been a welcome addition to our patients’ choices, it has also introduced a great deal of confusion. Which of these new technologies actually works? Which one is best? Who is a good candidate for what? Having been in practice for over twenty-five years, I have seen more than my share of “miracle machines” come and go. The amazing wonder touted on this year’s talk shows is often forgotten about a year later, and many of these machines make their

way into the hands of doctors who have never before pro-vided aesthetic treatments. Some even wind up in spas.

The bottom line: you must be an informed consumer. Many people, including some in the medical field, think these aesthetic treatments are easy and straight-forward. Aesthetic plastic surgeons have extensive training in and experience with all the different tissues of the body, from the molecular biology of wound healing, to the science of fat reduction and grafting, to the restoring, reshaping, and con-touring of muscle, bone, and skin. These scientific studies are further wedded to an artistic understanding and appre-ciation of beauty. There is nothing straight-forward or easy about it. In fact, many of these nonsurgical options are as difficult to perform optimally as their surgical counterparts, and shouldn’t everyone want an optimal result?

If you’re one of the 80% who would prefer plastic surgery without the surgery, take comfort in knowing you’re not alone. But, do check credentials and results before schedul-ing a consultation, so that without compromising quality or safety, you can take reasonable steps to look just as good as you feel.

Thanks,Mario Loomis

With Valentine’s day upon us, there are many visions of hearts and words of

love. Dr. Mehmet Oz describes the heart as an organ that “doesn’t empty blood like a balloon letting out air. That’s a very bland view of how the heart functions. It’s much more ele-gant than that. It twists the blood out the way you would wring water from a towel. You watch this muscle twisting and turning...When I saw this organ, I realized why it plays such an important role in our poetry, why it dominates our religion, why we associate the soul and love with a muscle.” (Einstein’s God: Conversations About Science and the Human Spirit, Krista Tippett, Penguin Books, 2010). My point is that like the heart, “Love” is much more that a word.

The late anthropologist Gregory Bateson, who I had the pleasure of studying with, explained “Love” as recognizing how things are intercon-nected, but he emphasized that it takes “wisdom” to understand how to love. Therefore, it takes two to really know one. If we are to love and celebrate its complexity as well as its symbols of the heart, we need

to understand what it means to be in love. When I work with couples, which I call, “it takes three to know two” in therapy, I initially stress that they articulate how they are commit-ted to each other. This is very reveal-ing, and it not only helps couples understand their connection, but it also opens the door to maintaining and strengthening their relationship.

The next step is to explore equity. This entails areas of gender sensitivity, especially for example; how year after year women in many heterosexual unions do the clear majority of the “Second Shift,” the fluid day to day chores and responsibilities to maintain a household. More importantly, in any gender variation that makes up a significant relationship, there needs to be a balance in decision making, parenting, finances etc.

The final step in maintaining a healthy relationship is the art of communication/intimacy. This is exemplified by the 99 plus ways to enhance closeness. This includes agreeing to have a “Win-Win” volley when communicating. What this means is similar to working together to keep the ball on a ping pong table. Expressing, checking and caring for

each other especially in the multitude of ways that intimacy/communication (i.e. best friends, walk in the park, sharing insights etc. etc.) is shared. This is true collaboration which avoids competitive or negative defensive patterns. In a sense, it takes twen-ty-four hours of dedicated fore play to be intimate and have the wisdom to appreciate it.If you are interested in exploring the love in your relationship and/or strengthening it, give me a call and set up a time to experience this worthwhile process. Enjoy this season of advertised bliss, but don’t take for granted the complexity and profound-ness of what it means to love from the heart!! TP

Dentalwellness of Suffern is proud to announce that it has added Solea, Convergent Dental’s new dental laser, to its practice. Solea’s technology offers patients a reliably anesthesia-free alternative to the traditional drill for hard and soft tissue procedures. Its unique 9.3 µm wavelength provides a natural anesthetic effect while also affording dentists the ability to cut dental enamel with unprecedented speed and precision. Patients experience virtually painless procedures that take a fraction of the time of a traditional dental appointment because practitioners do not need to inject anesthetic or control bleeding.

“This is really going to change the way people feel about going to the dentist. I can finally take care of most of my patient’s dental needs with virtually no pain at all.”says Dr. Sherri Alpert.

Investments in modern technology are what set Dentalwellness apart from everyone else. Solea delivers a completely different experience than the traditional drill. No more needles. No more jarring noises. No more soreness. Convergent Dental’s customers report that the majority of their hard and soft tissue procedures are done with no anesthesia and virtually no bleeding. Dentalwellness of Suffern patients will be able to receive the oral care they need and immediately jump back into their day. No anesthesia means no risk of patients biting themselves so the traditional limit of working in a single quadrant per visit is a thing of the past. Now patients can get all of their dental needs addressed in a single visit making it easy to return to work or home and avoid missing valuable “up-time”.

“Dentalwellness of Suffern is at the forefront of a dental revolution,” said Convergent Dental CEO Michael Cataldo. “People all over the country have been pleasantly shocked after experiencing anesthesia-free and virtually pain-free procedures. The skilled practitioners at Dentalwellness of Suffern are now able to deliver that experience to each one of their patients.”

“At Dentalwellness of Suffern we are always trying to find new ways to take the fear out of dental visits,” says Dr. Alpert. “ Our primary focus is teaching families how to take care of their teeth in order to prevent dental problems, but it’s nice to know that if problems do arise, we have a pain free way to fix them.”

About Convergent Dental, Inc.Convergent Dental, Inc., is a privately owned dental equipment and technology company. We are the developer of Solea®, the first computer-aided, CO2 laser system to be cleared by the FDA for hard, soft and osseous tissue indications. With Solea’s uniquewavelength and computer controls, dentists can reliably perform procedures anesthesia-free, blood-free, suture-free and pain-free. For dentists, reliably anesthesia-free and blood free procedures are powerful practice growth drivers, which enables multi-quadrant dentistry, saves time overall, allows dentists to perform more procedures themselves rather than refer patients out,and provides a more positive patient experience. For more information visit www.convergentdental.com. RAMAPO, NY —Byron-Hill Homebuilders has released a lim-ited collection of new lakefront homesites for sale at Pierson Lakes, the spectacular gated residential enclave tucked away in southern Rockland County on the New York/New Jersey border -- approxi-mately 30 miles from Manhattan.

Spanning six-to-18 acres in size, the expansive properties include three locations directly on the shoreline of Cranberry Lake with pristine views over open water and direct access to endless recreation. Two lake-view homesites are also available, providing stunning vistas of the lake and the rolling hills and tree-lined ridges that surround it. Site improvements are already in place for all five properties, which are being offered at special introductory pricing.

Known for its two private 100-acre lakes, heavi-ly-wooded landscape, and more than 1,000 acres of natu-ral beauty that will house just 74 grand custom homes upon completion, Pierson Lakes offers a sense of living in a nature preserve virtually untouched by human hand. Three-fourths of the Pierson Lakes community is dedicated to the preservation of natural habitats.

The dramatic landscape and serene ambience of Pierson Lakes is thanks, in part, to the creative and environmentally-sensitive devel-opment plan conceived by Byron-Hill Homebuilders to preserve the land’s inherent wilderness character. Byron-Hill purchased the unde-veloped portion of Pierson Lakes from descendants of the Pierson family whose holdings in the area date back to 1795 and who once owned 4,200 acres straddling Rockland and Bergen Counties.

“We have remained steadfast in our commitment to respect the great natural beauty of the site’s rolling, richly forested valleys, ridges and vales which remain virtually untouched,” notes JoAnne Briggs of Byron Hill. “Homes co-exist with the land, not exploit it. New residents can also feel secure in the knowledge that Pierson Lakes is an established community with an earlier phase of homes already completed, a manned-entry gatehouse, and a clubhouse.”

Residents of Pierson Lakes also enjoy a variety of unique ameni-ties and services, including natural preservation areas, miles and miles of walking, hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing trails; a boathouse, community beach, and two 100-acre lakes ideal for sailing, canoeing, and fishing. All common grounds are fully maintained by a Homeowner’s Association, with a gated and guarded entry and security patrols the entire Pierson Lakes community.

Located in the westernmost corner of Ramapo Township, NY, just minutes from the New Jersey border, Pierson Lakes is approx-imately 30 miles away from Manhattan and close to Paramus. The community offers an ideal escape from city life for nature and sports enthusiasts, families with children or empty-nesters who all take pleasure in sharing the joys of their community with their guests, either as a year-round home or weekend retreat.

Often referred to as “Tuxedo Park South,” Pierson Lakes shares many of the attributes that have made the nearby village of Tuxedo

Park a favorite destination of affluent Manhattanites for more than a century. A new wave of energy is being infused into the town of Tuxedo and the village of Sloatsburg which is enhancing the Pierson Lakes lifestyle. The Valley Rock Inn & Market recently opened in Sloatsburg, offering 17 guest rooms housed in four historic houses, an organically-focused market, garden café, pool,

spa, fitness center and bike shop. An art gallery, book store, bar, and fine dining farm-to-table restaurant are also planned, all less than two miles from the entrance to Pierson Lakes. Pierson Lakes is also just minutes from Harriman State Park, the award-winning Spook Rock Golf Course, an equestrian center, tennis courts, and numer-ous scenic bicycling routes.“Pierson Lakes must truly be seen to be believed,” added Mrs. Briggs.

“The community is a paradise for nature lovers, yet its proximity to the New York Thruway, I-287, and Route 17 means our residents are always well-connected. Manhattan, North Jersey, Westchester and Upstate New York are all within easy reach.

By Steven Piriano, MDInspireGrowth [email protected]

Check out Dr. Piriano’s new book, “Joshi and Joey, The Boys and the Blue Whale”, about the importance of exercise and good nutrition!

Joshi and Joey... and the Importance of Good Nutrition

I love my two boys. I often pray that I will always have the wisdom to guide them along the right path in life. It is my earnest desire to help them mature into kind, responsible and inspired adults. In addition to their

mental and emotional growth, I also believe in the tremen-dous importance of their physical well-being. I want them to grow into adults that can enjoy the benefits of physical health and vitality daily. I believe that the key to physical health lies in the forma-tion of good habits. Moreover, I understand that most of who they become will stem from lessons learned in their home. Thus, the responsibility of cultivating healthy practices in our children falls upon my wife and myself. I appreciate the importance of regular physical activity. I also recognize the enormous health benefits of eating an abundance of fruits and vegetables, while minimizing the consumption of processed foods. As parents, instilling these beliefs into the minds of our children oftentimes becomes quite challenging. For instance, place a piece of broccoli and a chocolate chip cookie in front of your average child. Which snack do you think will be eaten?

It has certainly not been an easy road with our own chil-dren. Over the years, we have learned and tried different techniques to persuade our boys to eat more vegetables. We have pureed veggies and hidden them in foods. This usually worked well, although I would consider it more deception than persuasion. Melting cheese on certain vegetables often makes it more appetizing for our young boys. They’ve tried dipping carrots in hummus and have loved it! Blueberries, raspberries and grapes are always a big hit. Our older son likes salad (I didn’t see that coming). During recent years, we’ve prepared foods with veggies such as spinach and broc-coli (both quite visible on their plates) and our boys have eaten it.

As our boys get older, it is easier for them to understand the importance of healthy eating. Even more essential is the fact that we are consistent in building healthy habits for our boys. This is not something that occurs overnight, but rather over months and years. We know that if we can raise our kids to be healthy, then chances are they will stay healthy as adults. That would mean the world to us.

I always try to inspire my boys to live healthy lives. However, it was my boys who inspired me to write a children’s book. It is entitled “Joshi and Joey, The Boys and the Blue Whale”. It is a delightful tale of adventure whose theme is the importance of exercise and good nutrition. I wrote it with the hope of encouraging children (and adults) to live and enjoy healthier lives. I thoroughly enjoyed writing it. My thought is that if even one person adapts a healthier lifestyle because of my book, then it will have been well worth the time it took to complete. TP

Education has centered on intelligence, as measured by various standardized tests, to determine the

potential for success for children in school and in the work place. And cer-tainly no one would argue that intelli-gence and education are not important for that success. But is it enough?

More and more employers as well as college admissions directors are suggesting that something is missing, something as necessary for success as a robust IQ and an ability to perform well in school. Maybe we can call it charac-ter, but we’re probably better off to get right down to it and call it grit.

There is no test for ‘resiliency,’ but surely if a person lacks the ability to fail, regroup and come back fighting, they are not likely to succeed in a highly competitive work place. Ditto for ‘hard work’; there is no one so smart or so well educated that they don’t run into the proverbial brick wall and have to really hunker down and work long, frustrating hours to achieve a goal. And what about ‘patience’ and ‘deferred gratification?’ Some projects in life require years of work; no one starts out in the job market as the CEO.

My personal greatest worry for the tech-reliant generation we are raising is their inability to tolerate boredom. “I’m bored,” a youngster will proclaim and the adults scurry around to find something to engage the youthful mind because surely boredom is the sign of a superior intellect that needs to be engaged. Not necessarily. In schools it frequently means that a task is difficult, and the effort needed to keep going is exhausting and frustrating, and we have trained children that saying, “I’m con-fused” is a sign of weakness, whereas saying “I’m bored” is a sign of superior intellectual functioning. In fact, many interesting ideas come from moments of boredom, when the mind wanders around its own tunnels and rivulets combining thoughts and connecting seemingly unrelated ideas and bits of information. Further, there is no col-lege or job so endlessly fascinating that one is never bored. Tedious tasks and boring meetings are part of life; it’s just a fact, so let’s get used to it.

At Saddle River Day School, we provide opportunities where our stu-dents can learn to develop grit through a growth mindset – the belief that they can improve their learning and skills if

they work hard and persevere through challenges and failures. We believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This view creates a love of learn-ing and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment and is critical to long-term success through college and beyond.

As we raise the generation entrusted to our care we need to expand our goals for them. Yes, grades can still matter; yes, standardized test scores will be part of the college admissions process for as far as the eye can see; yes, a formal, excellent education is still the most likely avenue to success in the work place. But we need to be thinking more than we have been about how to instill our children with the characteris-tics of perseverance, resiliency, self-suf-ficiency and patience as well. TP

With Dental Implants

The evolution of dental implants continues to improve at a rapid pace. Techniques and products are better, making procedures more time efficient, more predictable, and more dependable than they have been in the past.

Dental implants are changing the way people live. With them, people are rediscovering the comfort and confidence to eat, speak, laugh, and enjoy life. Dental implants are made up of titanium and other materials that are compatible with the human body. They are posts that are

surgically placed in the upper or lower jaw, where they function as a sturdy anchor for replacement teeth. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile.

After almost 35 years of experience and thousands of successful implants and satisfied patients, we at Ramapo Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery continue to develop and refine our techniques by taking advantage of the most advanced technologies and research. When you read about a new technique regarding implant treatment, rest assured we are aware. Often these techniques are developed here. We use only the best implants, mostly Nobel

Biocare and Straumann/ITI implants at this time. These companies and their products have proved themselves to be superior both in design and representation and fall in line with our commitment to excellence.
