Kihikihi 19-year-old clocked driving 169km ‘late for work’ TC150710SP1 OVER THE RADAR: Reading taken by Police north of Ohaupo on Monday morning. Waikato Police believe a man caught driving at over 160 kilo- metres per hour on a rural provin- cial highway on Monday morning was defying not only speed limits, but probably the laws of gravity as well. When stopped the 19-year-old Kihikihi man told the officers he was in a hurry because he was late for work. District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, says that at first the officer driving the patrol car at 96km/h had difficulty believ- ing the speed a radar was recording an approaching vehicle was travel- ling at. ‘‘Two staff were travelling north towards Hamilton from Ohaupo on SH3 about 6.14am,’’ Mr Tooman says. ‘‘The initial radar reading of the oncoming Mazda Familia was 167km/h. ‘‘But it didn’t stop there, the device locked on the southbound car at a speed of 169km/h, a speed more suited to the nearby Hamilton airport runway and not a dark rural highway. ‘‘At that speed, he’s doing about 150 metres per second passing countless farm driveways and paddocks. If someone was to come out of a driveway there wouldn’t be a chance to say good night nurse, it would be all over. ‘‘Frankly I’m surprised a 1994 model Familia is capable of that speed and why someone would believe that on a restricted licence he would have sufficient driving experience to control a vehicle at that speed on a race track let alone a public road.’’ The driver had his licence sus- pended for 28 days and is due to appear in the Hamilton District Court on August 12 on a charge of operating a vehicle at a dangerous speed. Super Gold Cards to providediscounts on new bus trips

Thrilled as I was to read theCouncil report about our newbuses and bus services, I wassorry that the news that DawnIrving of WDC assured me wouldalso happen, that the newcontractor’s agreement wouldenable us to use our Super GoldCards, was not printed in thatreport.

I am really looking forward tobeing able to use my Super GoldCard on the new bus runs whichcommence around December.

While I agree with HazelBarnes that those of us who writeletters to the paper should beacknowledged and evenrewarded, I must advise her that

the shop applying for the liquorlicence in Hazelmere Crescenttold me that they had withdrawntheir application as soon as aproblem was made apparent tothem, which was the day beforethe letter was printed in theCourier.

Hoping for happy outcomesand clear communicationsthroughout our small community.

DOREEN KELLYEditor’s note: Yes Mrs Kelly, the Super Gold Card will beable to be used to receivediscounted fares when the newbus services commence laterthis year. Nigel Piper, oper-ations director for Go Bus says

this is possible because of Gov-ernment reimbursing thecouncils involved for provisionof the subsidy required. Thediscounted fares for Super GoldCard holders will be availablebetween 9am-3pm and after6.30pm Monday-Friday, andany time on Saturdays,Sundays or public holidays. Inrelation to the liquor licenceapplication, the applicationwas withdrawn just prior to thearticle that ran in the Courier(we still ran the article as it wasjudged to be of significant com-munity interest), but it waspreceded by a letter to theeditor in an earlier issue.

New museum money wouldbe better spent elsewhere

The proposed new museum seemsan awful waste of money that would bewell spent in other areas or reducingrates.

There is a perfectly good, big, underused museum in Hamilton 20 minutesaway. Most visitors to Te Awamutu gothrough Hamilton, either coming orgoing.

If they wish to build a Maoriculture centre the ideal place is theWananga for many reasons, the leastbeing the Government may help fundit.

Communities are judged by how

they look after the elderly — knockdown the outdated councillor housingin Palmer Street and rebuild modernfacilities, give Kihikihi a pensionervillage to be proud of as well asupgrade their main street which is thesouthern entrance to Te Awamutu andmake a 10 year plan to hold and reducerates.

If you really want change vote, andvote for change through new people onthe Council these elections.

Otherwise you’ll get the same old, same old.

Eventide Trust rapt withsupport for 40th birthday

Through your newspaper the Even-tide Trust Committee would like tosincerely thank you and the commun-ity for your support during our recent40th birthday celebrations.

It is wonderful to live in a placewhere community spirit is evident inboth the local paper and in the actionsof the residents.

Forty years ago it was communityspirit that allowed for Freeman Court

to be built and the same spirit wasevident at the birthday events.

Your excellent coverage of thecelebration did much to encouragethat spirit.

Te Awamutu Lion, Rosetown Lionsand staff at Freeman Court also contri-buted a great deal to the success of thecelebration.

More centre details wantedI would like to know who is on the steering

committee for the proposed cultural centre, howmuch has been spent so far, how much is in the bank,is more land needed to be purchased, what are thelikely running costs and expected returns andbenefits of the project?

Could the Courier help the community to answersome of these questions as we rely on you forinformation.

Sensible option would be toenlarge, upgrade museum

So the CBD upgrade is all butfinished, the street party over andcouncillors are busy telling us allwhat a great job has beendone.Well I for one wonder what itall cost.

Having been on a fixed incomefor some years now, I have becomeused to recycling, reusing, livingwithin my means and if I am luckyI can save a little for later.

I cannot understand why lampposts, pedestrian crossingbarriers, paving stones, rubbishtins and seats were removed andreplaced with new ones justbecause someone thought it was agood idea.

Who was it who thought suchwaste was acceptable?Whothought the large pots would notattract the attention of idiots?

Now we have the next greatidea, a new museum and theatre. Ivisited the museum last Thursdayat the height of the schoolholidays. My wife and I were theonly visitors at that time.Hardly acompelling argument for a newone.

Then there is the proposed newtheatre. Has Council got a workeron the payroll whose sole job it isto think up dumb ideas. Surely ifThe Woolshed is too small, youhave a longer season so all who

want to, can attend, and if it istotally unfit then renovate orextend it.

I know Council will not beinterested, but since June 2004 myrates for two similar propertieshave risen from $1364 to $2099 inJune 2010 (before the 5.4%increase is applied) an increase of54% and over the same periodGovt. Super has increased from$10,270 after tax to $12,740 — anincrease of only 26.5%.

Somebody is clearly not livingwithin my means and I don’t meanme. The sensible option would beto renovate and enlarge it.

TOP FASHION LABELSFrom morse to messaging

TC150710DT01FORMER P&T technician Eddie Krielen (back) checks the old Pukeatua telephone exchange with MarcusBeale, who worked on the exchange for about six months as an operator. Mr Beale says his grandfatherJanes Jemmett had the first store in the Pukeatua district, and his wife ‘Ma’ Jemmett was thepostmistress. She initially worked from the store, which had a phone booth outside, and later from thefirst Post Office. Mr Beale came to the district in the mid-40s and took on whatever work was about, butdidn’t like the inside job at the exchange and went farming down the road at Wharepapa South.

TC150710DT02PHILATELIST Dr Ross Marshall speaking at theopening of From Morse to Messaging — Post andTelegraph History in Waipa. He returns to deliver apublic programme at 7pm on Wednesday, July 28.

How we communicatehas always been a fasci-nating process — especi-ally as developing techno-logy makes it faster andmore accessible.

Currently showing atTe Awamutu museum isFrom Morse to Messaging— Post and Telegraph His-tory in Waipa.

As the name suggeststhe exhibition traces theearliest form of communi-cation utilising morsecode, through to the latestmessaging technology —and everything in-between as offered byGovernment Post andtelegraph services.

Senior curatorStephanie Lambert sayscreating the exhibitionhas been a major teameffort.

Alan Hall was guestcurator and has done agreat job drawingtogether research for theexhibition.

Robin Startup, who isa nationally recognisedexpert on postal history, provided copies of hisresearch on the districtwhich will be retained inthe Museum collectionsand be accessible to thepublic.

A replica postbox wasbuilt for the Museum

foyer by Mick Forsterfrom Livingstone.

Multi-media supportwas provided by MarcusGower and the Waipa Dis-trict Council.

The opening functionincluded a short talk fromDr Ross Marshall, a phil-atelist from Otorohanga.

Dr Marshall spokeabout the development ofvarious forms of com-munication in the dis-trict, arising from theneeds of early settlerssuch as the missionariesand Government repre-sentatives.

He said the Govern-ment took an early inter-est in providing theseservices as it was deemedessential to civilisedsocieties and for thedevelopment of com-merce.

They chose routes, built and maintainedinfrastructure andinstalled systems thatwould change anddevelop over the years —but still provide the sameoutcomes.

These servicesincluded early morse tele-graph systems, ruraldelivery services andearly telephoneexchanges.

Dr Marshall says legis-lation was also requiredto ensure services workedproperly, such asnumbering urban streetaddresses so town postaldelivery systems could bedeveloped.

4 Week Fat Loss Trial

4 girls - 14 days - 21.41kgs less body fat…

Without getting hungry!!

Phone: 871 8558 www.bodybuzz.co.nz

16 Market Street, Te Awamutu

Cara O’ConnerDue to new discoveries about exercise and nutrition Martydecided to get a group together and test the theories.I was asked to be part of the fat loss trial. The diet had norestriction on how much you ate. You could eat until youwere full. No set meal times. You ate when you got hungry.I had to fi nd out more to see what the catch was. An email was sent out and a meeting was held for all those interested.50 people expressed interest in the trial and about 10 were able to make the meeting. A video recording was made so that the others could watch it on DVD.Personally I like to eat until I’m full so I found the diet suitedme quite well. He was right about not getting hungry also.I lost 6.04kgs of fat in the fi rst 14 days. It’s been 7 weeksand I am still following the plan because it suits me. I like the continued results and I like having loads of energy.

Rachel KantersI have a busy work schedule but I can still fi nd time for a quickBody Buzz workout with Cara. I followed a combination of Marty’s balanced nutrition and the 4 week fat loss diet as best as I could and have had signifi cant results, the highlight being a 12cm loss in my waist measurement.

Rachel TrumperI thought you had to eat less and be hungry to loose weight. So because I didn’t get hungry I assumed that it wasn’tworking. My fi ance was telling me he could see thedifference but I just didn’t believe him. My 14 day result check proved that he was right. I had lost 5.7kg of body fat, but the best thing was I had lost 7.5cms of my thigh measurement.

Evelyn TamakiI followed Marty’s Balanced Nutrition plan and got signifi cant results in the fi rst 14 days. Besides losing 6.01kgs of body fat I lost an incredible 30cms off my waist ‘bulge’ due to cutting out a certain food that was making me retain water. I then tried the 4 week fat loss diet and lost 3.5cms off my thigh measurement which is an especially diffi cult area for me to loose size from.

Diet and Exercise Myths ExposedDid you know some exercise only makes you hungrier and more likely to gain weight? Where did the “8 glasses ofwater a day” myth come from? Do we really need high fi bre in the diet?

ACT leader says angerover ETS running high

TC150710GJ02RODNEY HIDE on the footpath outside Fonterra’s Te AwamutuDairy Factory. ACT has estimated the ETS will put extra operatingcosts of $40 Million on Fonterra in the first year.

ACT Party leader Rodney Hidesays anger about the ETS meanshe is in the rare position of tryingto calm down meetings.

Mr Hide was in Otorohangayesterday at one of a series ofpublic meetings put on by ACTaround the country and calledinto Te Awamutu on his waynorth to the next meeting.

He says the depth of feeling andanger among ordinary New Zea-landers about the EmissionsTrading Scheme is running high.

Mr Hide says the announce-ment by new Australian PrimeMinister Julia Gillard that Aus-tralia will not have an ETS before2012, shows what a huge mistakethe National Government hasmade by pushing ahead with ourscheme in New Zealand.

‘‘Julia Gillard’s stance waswhat ACT were expecting. Shewas after all, one of the group ofMinisters who urged a delay tothe scheme in the first place. Thisonly serves to reinforce the ACTParty’s call for New Zealand’sETS to be put on hold until ourmajor trading partners catch up.

Mr Hide says we are nowguaranteed to be at a competitivedisadvantage with our closestmajor trading partner for at leastanother two years, if not more.

‘‘How many jobs are we goingto lose overseas and what damagewill be done to our economy, before Australia, the US, Japanand China get on board, if ever?

‘‘What’s more, any benefit of adrop in company tax rates to alower rate than Australia’s will belost due to the costs imposed onNew Zealand based businesses bythe ETS.’’

ACT claims National has beenfar too hasty in implementing this‘‘complicated and far-reachingETS legislation’’.

‘‘Unfortunately it is New Zea-landers who will ultimately paythe price for this foolish mistake,’’Mr Hide says.

‘‘ACT have always said thatthe Government’s estimate of acost per week of $3.17 is a grossunder-estimate because itincludes only the direct priceincreases of petrol and electricity. It excludes the inevitable priceincreases that will occur as busi-nesses elect to pass on their ownETS cost increases.

‘‘This means the full cost tohouseholds will be closer to $300per annum.

‘‘ Some families are able to takethese increases in their stride, however for some it is an impo-sition which they simply cannot

afford.‘‘And spare a thought for

farmers. According to Beef andLamb NZ (formerly Meat andWool) dairy farmers are nowliable for a cost of $3,900 perannum which rises to $10,200 perannum in 2015.

‘‘ACT believe the ETS shouldnever have been implemented andwill keep campaigning to at leasthave it suspended.

‘‘This is a key issue for us. Thisis a key issue for New Zealand’s

New business ownerJessica Novak had a goodidea of what type of busi-ness she wanted to buy —so when T.A. Shoes waspresented it was an easydecision.

She and husband Vic-tor knew T.A. Shoeswould be right for them —it was well establishedand had a legacy formedby previous longservingowners Colin and JoanLee and Jane van denBemd of over 40 years.

“This is an opportunity for peopleinterested in standing in the 2010elections to learn more about thenomination and election processesand the role of council and electedmembers,’’ says Waipa DistrictCouncil’s deputy electoral officer,Jennie McFarlane.

‘‘It’s also a chance to have anyquestions answered,”

“Local government is local dem-ocracy. This is fundamental for thepeople of Waipa to have their voicesheard.

‘‘The mayor and councillors takeon a leadership role in the Waipadistrict representing the views of thecommunity.

“We need a range of people ofdifferent ages, ethnicities andbackgrounds to represent the divers-ity of Waipa’s community.

“Anyone over the age of 18 canstand for election as long as they are aNew Zealand citizen and enrolled onthe electoral roll.”

Waikato’s search and rescueteams sharpen up their skills

Volunteers from the Waikatosearch and rescue district had thechance to take to the region’s skiesand sharpen their aerialobservation skills during a recentweekend training course.

Volunteers from Police, Coast-guard, LandSAR, Surf Life Savingpilots and regional emergency ser-vice staff (including some from TeAwamutu area) were involved inthe Air Observers Course, whichwas led by the Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand

(RCCNZ) in the Raglan area.“Aerial searching is a complex

discipline that takes patience, con-centration and a host of otherskills. Without effective training,it’s easy for a search to be conduc-ted too fast, at the wrong altitude,or not cover the area properly,”says RCCNZ training managerRodney Bracefield.

“The ability for searchers tospot clues from the air is a vitalskill that can make all the differ-ence between life and death for

someone in the water or lost in theoutdoors.”

Mr Bracefield says the course, hosted by the Hamilton PoliceDistrict, focussed on a mixture ofclassroom refresher training andpractical skills development –including participants taking tothe air in aircraft to put theirtraining into practice.

“You can never have too muchtraining in search and rescue — itmay ultimately help savesomeone’s life.”

Kai @ the Right Price is looking to address foodsecurity in Te Awamutu and Kihikihi.

‘‘The term food security is widely used, howeverthere is some confusion about what it actuallymeans,’’ says Population Health promoter BettyHolden.

‘‘Food security exists when all whanau, at alltimes, are able to access enough safe and nutritiousfoods to live an active and healthy life.’’

Fresh Choice and Population Health’s healthpromotion team have joined forces to make thatgoal a little more achievable and promote healthylifestyles through the community-based initiativeKai @ the Right Price.

‘‘When you go to Fresh Choice, you will be able topurchase $2.99 packs of a variety of quality fruit andvegetables,’’ Ms Holden says.

‘‘Buy four of these packs and you will get a fifthfree.

‘‘It’s a great concept and one that will hopefullyencourage people to fill their trolleys withnutritious food which is now even more affordableand helps us in our journey to lead healthylifestyles.’’

Next Monday (July 19) Fresh Choice will host apromotion between 10am-2pm to celebrate thelaunch of Kai @ the Right Price in-store.

Otorohanga, the Kiwiana capital of New Zealand and gateway to the Waitomo region welcomes international tourists and New Zealand travellers with its colourful hanging baskets, warm friendly cafes and excellent retail outlets.

Situated in the centre of Otorohanga, the Sir Ed Hillary walkway is a celebration of Kiwiana. The modules on display in the walkway feature New Zealand icons and heroes such as Buzzy bee, the All Blacks, Aunt Daisy, Sir Edmund Hillary and Marmite. Visitors can spend an entertaining half hour viewing the modules some of which have an audio option.

The carved pouwhenua on the village green in the centre of the town represent the founding chiefs and history of the Maniapoto Maori.

Cent Per Cent gives everythingto win 2010 Te Awamutu Cup

TC150710CT05CUP JOY: Cent Per Cent and Michelle Wenn hold out locals Wida’s Dream and Elblitzem.

TC150710CT04BARRY’S JOY and Lynsey Satherley claim the first and only local victory atWaipa on Saturday in the opening race on the card, the Falkirk At WindsorPark Stud 1580 metres.

TC150710CT06SAM SPRATT salutes the judge as she brings thewinner of the John F. Grylls Memorial, Dan’s Best, back into the birdcage.

BY GRANT JOHNSTON

A combination of racefitness and a better win-ter track saw Cent PerCent grind out a meritori-ous victory in Saturday’sFreight Lines Te Awa-mutu Cup.

The five-year-old greygelding was having hisfifth start in this cam-paign and he demon-strated a distinct likingfor the turning Waipatrack at his first start atTe Awamutu.

Having raced handy,Cent Per Cent was clearlyheaded approaching thehome straight but whenjockey Michelle Wenngave him a slap with thewhip he responded to puta break on the field anddug in to hold out fastfinishing Robert Priscott-trained locals Wida’sDream and Elblitzem.

It was a pick-up ridefor Wenn, whose originalmount for the race Pindyburst an aorta and col-lapsed in training earlierin the week. The facialcuts and bruises the ridersuffered were still evi-dent on Saturday, alongwith a wry smile for herturnaround in fortune.

Graeme Rogerson

suggested a hurdlingdebut may have been inthe offing if Cent Per Centhad not performed on Sat-urday, but fellow co-trainer and wife Debbie

ruled that out.Waipa stables began

the day in fine style pro-viding the quinella in thefirst race with Barry’sJoy, trained by Kim Max-

well, and Holloway, trained by Richard andChris Otto.

But despite having aposse of potential win-ners throughout the day

they did not notchanother victory and werewell short of the amazingseven-from-eight-racestally at the previous Wai-pa meeting.

Triple treat for Pirongia?

TC150710SP16TRY TIME: David Grey crosses the line for Pirongia Senior A team’sfirst try against Kereone at Pirongia on Saturday.

Three teams in line for Waikato titlesThe Pirongia Rugby Club

wrote another chapter in its longhistory by securing home finalsfor both the Senior A and B teamsthis weekend.

The Senior A’s won their Wai-kato division one semi-finalagainst Kereone 13-5 on Saturday, while the Senior B’s won bydefault from Frankton lastThursday night.

Layne Kerr reports thePirongia Senior A’s started thegame strongly and exerted earlydominance through their strongscrummaging and lineout play.

The Kereone scrum was con-stantly under pressure and couldsecure very little front foot ballfor their backs.

Their lineout also struggled, with Pirongia’s Ryan Bardsleyable to steal several of the oppo-sition throws.

Despite their dominancearound the field, Pirongia wereunable to put points on the boarduntil the 20 minute.

A surging run upfield byBardsley led to quick ball for thebacks, from which David Greywas able to score out wide.

Pirongia looked to have scoredagain when Nathan O’Reileycharged down a clearing kick anddived over, only to have thereferee disallow the try.

Things looked grim for theMountain Men shortly afterhalftime when Kereone scoredagainst the run of play after theirNo. 8 secured turnover ball andran 30m to beat the defence to thecorner for a 5-all scoreline.

However, with the Pirongiaforward pack slamming theiropposites, Kerr says it was onlytime before the defence broke.

A surging backline move, fromtheir own 10m mark, saw PetaTaukiri release the bullocking

Kahn Adam down the touchlineon a 40m run. He linked with hisforwards and powerhouse propLee Bennett slid over the lineafter an ankle tap five metresshort but the referee was able tofind something he didn’t like andagain ruled out the try.

More pressure saw captainLyle Gilbert burst upfield andrelease Grey for a dotdown nearthe posts, only to have the refereerule out a third five pointer.

The next period of attack sawfirst five Paul Taylor breakthrough the mid field, find sup-port and Adam crashed over inthe corner to finally see Pirongia

back in the lead.More attacking by Pirongia

saw charge after charge at theKereone line, with both Bennettand Bardsley held up over theline.

Taylor completed the scoringwith a penalty to extend the leadto eight points.

Player of the day was RyanBardsley.

With the highly successfulPirongia U19’s also playing theirfinal round-robin game against cotop of the table team Hinuera athome this Saturday, it promisesto be a huge day for the club andPirongia community.

White Waikato captain, Middleton new face

TC150710CT01WAIKATO newcomer Chris Middleton shows his athleticism scoring for Te Awamutu Sports against Hautapu.

CFPNEW Waikato NPC captain Nathan White on the charge.

COLIN THORSEN

Tough as teak Te AwamutuSports prop Nathan White will cap-tain the Waikato rugby team in the2010 ITM Cup national provincialrugby championship.

In naming his squad yesterday, coach Chris Gibbes of Te Awamutusaid ‘‘Nathan epitomises what itmeans to come from the Waikato andtherefore what our players shouldaim to be.

‘‘He is a tenacious and deter-mined player who literally leaveseverything he has out on the field forhis province.

White has played 51 games for theMooloos.

He follows in the footsteps of Ian

Foster, Deon Muir and Jono Gibbes, who all captained Waikato whileplaying out of Te Awamutu SportsClub.

Last year’s captain, LiamMessam, is one of three Waikatoplayers unavailable due to selectionin the All Blacks’ Tri-Nations squad.Mils Muliaina and Richard Kahuiare the others unavailable.

Te Awamutu Sports’ flanker JonoArmstrong is a notable omissionfrom the 27-strong squad.

Armstrong had impressedrecently in the No. 7 jersey forWaikato in their pre ITM Cup warmup game against Auckland, wonresoundingly by the Mooloomen.

Te Awamutu Sports’spokesperson, Keith Parsons says

his club is extremely disappointedfor Armstrong.

‘‘Jono is a true blue Waikato boy,who has been in outstanding formthis year.

‘‘Everyone at the club feels forhim.’’

There are five new players in theWaikato squad this year, along withthe return of back rower StevenSetephano (formerly of Otago) andprop Toby Smith (from injury).

One of the new faces in theforwards is Te Awamutu Sports’lock Chris Middleton.

The former Wellingtonian, whoplayed in two Ranfurly Shielddefences in the capital city last year, has been an outstanding acquisitionand become a real club and team

man in his debut season for TeAwamutu Sports.

‘‘Chris, like Whitey (NathanWhite), puts it on the line for theteam every time he plays,’’ saysParsons.

‘‘He is well respected by his team-mates and club members in gen-eral.’’

Prop Ben May is the third TeAwamutu Sports’ forward to makethis year’s Waikato squad.

May, who started with Te Awa-mutu Sports until injury curtailedhis club season, was another wel-come addition to the local club thisseason.

In announcing the squad, Gibbescommented ‘‘it has been one of thehardest to select as we had such a

high level of talent within the train-ing squad.

‘‘This group of young men areconfident that this is the year Wai-kato will win the competition andbring home the ITM Cup.

‘‘This is our sole aim for theseason and we will succeed at allcosts.’’

The new forwards are Middletonand loose forwards Zak Hohneck andMatt Vant Leven from Bay of Plenty.

The new backs are wing FrankHalai and utility back ChristianLealiifano.

Waikato play their final pre-season game against Taranakitomorrow afternoon at Hawera(where Nathan White was born).Kick off is at 1.30pm.

Late Maristrun scuttlesHamilton OB

CFPLOGAN McLAUGHLINlands to vital goal kicksto get Marist home.

Te Awamutu Marist enhanced their chances ofwinning the Waikato second division round-robincompetition with a hard earned 10-5 victory overHamilton Old Boys.

The Murray Gane Plumbing sponsored TeAwamutu Marist team moved back into secondplace on the table, two points adrift of Te Akau.

Te Awamutu Marist’s cause was helped no endby previous competition leaders Hamilton Maristgetting beaten at the weekend.

Te Akau have played one more game thanMarist, having yet had their bye.

Carl Henderson reports that Hamilton Old Boyscome out firing and Te Awamutu Marist looked abit shell shocked.

For long periods of the first half Marist weredenied possession and struggled to get out of their22.

The first 25 minutes was spent entirelydefending. To keep Old Boys scoreless during thisonslaught was a mighty effort.

The Hamiltonians did look unlucky not to beawarded a try when the referee was unsighted.

Marist finally cleared their line and lookedcertain to score at the other end, only for the ball tobe knocked on with the line open.

Old boys broke the deadlock in the 35th minutewith a well worked try after ‘sucking’ in most of the

Marist backs with pickand goes, then spinningit wide.

Trailing 5-0, Maristopened the second halfpositively, competing alot better, despite stillbeing placed under con-siderable pressure by avery good Old Boys’ unit.

Marist left their win-ning run until theclosing stages of thegame when strong run-ning fullback AdamKahura crashed over forhis seventh try of theseason.

Logan McLaughlinkicked a difficult conver-sion for a 7-5 lead to setup a tense last 10minutes.

Marist dominatedpossession for the rest ofthe game and put theicing on the cake with apenalty right on fulltime.

Henderson says ‘‘itwasn’t Marist’s best per-formance of the year butthey showed admirablecourage and determina-tion defending for suchlong periods of the game.

The Redoubt player ofthe day went to ChrisCollins.

Country Music Club this SundaySpecial guest at this Sunday’s

Te Awamutu Country Music ClubConcert is Llew Bridger.

Born in Transkei, in SouthAfrica, Mr Bridger has always beeninterested in music, and in histeens played in a rock band withleanings towards The Beatles andThe Rolling Stones.

In 1966 he came to New Zealandon holiday, and obviously enjoyedhimself as he emigrated in 2001.

Helping him settle into his new

home was the Kiwi love andappreciation for music.

He joined a country music cluband has been hooked ever since.

Mr Bridger has enjoyed singingin country music clubs in theWaikato and Bay of Plenty, and hasalways found Te Awamutu particu-larly rewarding.

At present he lives in Hamilton, where he teaches at the WaikatoInstitute of Technology.

His association with the Te

Awamutu Country Music Clubincludes helping with the clubband and sound system, and he willbe assisting members at the weeklyworkshops.

Also entertaining on Sundaywill be the club’s recent Te PukeAwards entrants, junior membersand members and visitors fromother clubs.

The public is welcome to attendthe monthly concert, this Sundayat the RSA Club from 1pm.
