SGVD President . . . Rita Aleman…909-284-2384…[email protected] Hello Members, The next part of "The Collect" is: Make us to grow calm, serene, gentle. I have always felt that this statement is our way of asking for help within ourselves. Your mind hears you saying, "make us" and your whole self is alerted to step up and change. You say these words and your voice even shifts a few octaves and this is because we want to be "calm, serene, gentle". So the next time you say this sentence, remember that you are mentally shifting your outlook on becoming calm, serene and gentle. Repeat this line a few times, it's very relaxing. Now for my message: I would like to express how pleased I was with the attendance at the December meeting, hosted by El Monte Woman's Club and now how wonderful the attendance was at the January District Board Meeting hosted by South Pasadena Women's Club, was even higher in count. When this edition goes out, we will have just finished up with the Birthday Council and Craft Contest, so I will report on that in the next edition. Congratulations to Denise Jackman , she was selected to be the LEADS candidate for the San Gabriel Valley District. I will be attending the California Federation of Women's Clubs State Board in San Diego on Feb 8 and 9th and I know she will do great representing the District. Now, we look forward to the San Gabriel Valley District Annual Fashion Show. Soon to be here, February 23, 2019. This is the Districts fundraising event and it all depends on the support from each of the 28 Clubs in the District. The 63rd Annual Convention dates are April 12-13, 2019 at the Fullerton Marriott. I hope you consider attending and I look forward to what has been planned for you. This years Convention has some great things in store, so please make sure to ask your Club how you can attend. The "Call" will be distributed to club Presidents at the Birthday Council. Our District grew in membership again and the numbers are growing. Keep up the "Volunteer Spirit" and let's keep renewing our spirit for friendship and service for others. We are "Open Hearts With A Renewed Spirit" and it shows when we are all in support of each other. SGVD 1ST Vice President…Rosette Clippinger…909-525-8828 Happy Heart and Valentine’s Month to everyone! The New Year is off to a busy start, as we begin with our 2019 activities and projects. I want to thank all the clubs that turned in their reports last month. Big Thank you to District Chairmen, for your hard and dedicated work, getting the judges, and writing the District Reports. Your work is greatly appreciated and I am truly blessed to be able to work with a group of wonderful ladies. Great Job!!! SGVD 2nd Vice President …Terry Perkins ~ 909-895 7710…[email protected]

THIRTY-POINT MEMBERSHIP PLAN --Part 1

As clubs we have to constantly work at rebuilding our clubs in order to survive, and this must be done while our clubs are active and vibrant in order to keep attracting active and vibrant members. CFWC has a Thirty Point Membership Plan that can help us do this. This month I’m sharing the first 10 points, and will share 10 point in March, and the final 10 points in April. 1. Develop a plan with goals for the entire year. 2. The club membership campaign should be its major project 3. Appoint a Membership Committee to plan the club's entire membership project. 4. Market Federation projects, rather than "Federation". 5. Hold several membership functions. 6. Have friends recruit former members 7. Take prospective members to meetings - don't expect them to come alone. 8. Assign hostesses-new members should never sit alone! 9. Feed them! It works wonders! 10. Read your local newspaper and raid the leadership of other organizations. SGVD 3rd VP/Convention ... Linda Koontz …909-593-3906 You should be promoting Convention to all your members. As reported at our January District Board, booking rooms must be a priority on your “To Do” list if you haven’t booked yet. Making room reservations is the easiest (if your President forwarded you the link). Ask…if you haven’t received it, since Marianne Jennings has sent several email blasts to all Club Presidents. However, I repeated the codes below for booking by phone. Super easy to book via the link your President sent you. Please note if booking by phone, you must book reservation through Marriott’s 800 number: 800-750-0981. The Code you must use is one of the following SGVSGVA King Room Only one (but if available can reserve more) SGVSGVB Room with Two Double Beds ****Please note cutoff date to book rooms is before March 21, 2019. As of this writing I spoke with the gal handling rooms and again she informed me if you don’t book before March 21st, those rooms will be released to the public and you will pay a higher rate if you’re able to get a room. I don’t mean to sound like a nag, but I don’t want to see anyone having to drive back and forth because they do not have a room. For those not at our January Board, I announced Mary Anne Drew is unable to take care of Opportunity Baskets. However, Tami Miller (La Verne-San Dimas) and Sue Hogganuer (Walnut) both came forward to volunteer. Marilyn Cruz also volunteered to help wherever needed and Beverly Clifton (Sierra Madre) will be one of our ticket sellers at the door. I need three members selling tickets at the door (each session): 1) Opportunity tickets (for money) and 2) Opportunity tickets (Baskets). These tickets will be sold 6-$5. 3) Special Drawing tickets $5 each for a chance to win a beautiful “Dooney & Burke” purse (value over $300). To be fair to all attending, tickets for our “Dooney” will be sold at all

2nd Month of "KEY" Workshop Classes - Agenda Detailed Minutes Welcome back, I trust the Holiday's were enjoyable.

Let's start with the importance of an Agenda. This document creates an effective meeting. The agenda is one of the most important elements for a productive and effective meeting. Here's why: Communicates information to all attendees, it allows the opportunity to be come prepared, and provides a focus for the meeting. I know what your thinking; what does that have to do with taking minutes? Just think about; it gives the minute taker a template to follow very easily. Noting the action points of the speaker, following important facts of the meeting, roll call and capturing motions all on one sheet of paper. It's the new cheat sheet, easy to follow, difficult to miss anything!

Tidbits to Remember 1. Review the Agenda prior to the meeting. 2. Be prepared with extra sheet of paper if necessary. 3. Now your ready to create your minutes following the guidelines of the Agenda focusing on issues raised, related responses, final decisions and recording actions by utilizing the agenda.

Class is dismissed. SGVD Corresponding Secretary….Marianne Jennings… (818) 398-7323 We know there are times that your Club may need a card or one of your members needs a special card. Please do not hesitate to email me the information that allows SGVD to respond to a member's needs. If you have not received a copy of the San Gabriel Valley District Yearbook, please contact me to make arrangements to receive one. SGVD Financial Secretary …..Cheryl Linnborn…..951 790-6441 Just a word about new or late paying members: CFWC is currently not accepting New and/or Late Paying Member forms because the deadline was December 31, 2018. A new date for accepting new members and dues has not been announced by CFWC. They will make a decision at the CFWC State Board meeting in early February.

Page 6: 735 Windwood Drive Walnut, Ca 91789 February 2019...7. Take prospective members to meetings - don't expect them to come alone. 8. Assign hostesses-new members should never sit alone!

6

So in the meantime, please continue to recruit new members and process them into your clubs. Deposit their check into your Treasury. Please do not bring them to District Board in February. When you prepare the Club Information Form/Data Blank after February, you will include them on that form. You DO NOT have to wait until Convention in April to collect dues and turn in the Club Information Form. Any questions, please call me at 951 790-6441 or email at [email protected]. Advocates for Children … Esthela Torres de Siegrist …626-442-0354 ““Educational Debts—Our Nation’s Unaddressed Crisis!!!” Across our country, families, educators, business leaders, etc., are urging our children, “Go to college,” or “Get Certification from a Technical School.” Well and good, you may say. However, are we really preparing our children for or even taking the time to inform them or their families of the incredible educational debt that will inevitably confront them? According to FORBES Magazine, at present 43,000,000 Americans owe a total of $1.2 trillion (NOT BILLIONS) in educational debt. And colleges, universities, and technical training schools continually raise the costs of tuition. How much does it cost per year at UCLA? If the student lives at home, it will cost $56,000. If the student lives on campus, the cost is $65,000. By comparison, at USC, if the student lives on campus, the cost is $75,000 per year. For this reason, many graduating high schoolers AND EVEN MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS are being advised to attend community college—many of which are now offering two years “tuition free.” With dual enrollment, middle school and high school students can attend community college and pay only a health fee. The first two years of community college credit classes count towards a four-year degree at ALL four-year universities. A major cost saver! On average nationally, in 2019, for a holder of a four-year degree or a technical training institute’s certification, the debt owed will be close to $100,000—which will require at least twenty years to repay. Coupled with this situation is the not-well-understood dilemma for many parents, who co-sign for their student’s educational loan. They, too, are “on the hook” to repay the loan. And, educational loans are not subject to bankruptcy!!!!!!! At present, the default rate for student loans is 10.7% and the delinquency rate is on the increase.

CHAIRMEN’S CHATS

Page 7: 735 Windwood Drive Walnut, Ca 91789 February 2019...7. Take prospective members to meetings - don't expect them to come alone. 8. Assign hostesses-new members should never sit alone!

7

So, what are the consequences of all this? What does this matter? Well, students who are saddled with substantial educational loans, the majority, are unable to buy a car or a home. They cannot afford to get married and have children. Since the cost of living is so high in California, many of our children finish their post high school education, owe a substantial educational debt, and relocate to another state. We educate them, and they are forced to leave. In its economic impact, the level of educational debt is a national crisis—still largely unaddressed. Student debt ranks third in importance, closely behind mortgage and credit card debt. Many are asking, “Why give billions to other countries…why not invest in our children first.’ Our government “bailed out the banks, bailed out Wall Street, and even bailed out General Motors! Why, then, not “bail out our students?” What do you think? Professor Esthela Torres de Siegrist

Tips for getting in the newspaper You do not have to be a reporter to get your story in the newspaper. Below are 7 tips for getting in the newspaper.

1. Have an ongoing relationship with the editor of your local newspaper. Share upcoming events or pitch story ideas. The paper will be more likely to send a reporter to cover the event.

2. Tie your story to other big news in the area. Watch for big headlines and find creative ways to tie in your club specific events.

3. Every newspaper has a unique style. Know and understand the editors preferences and deliver a story the editor can use without editing, cutting, or changing too much. This makes their job easier and success more likely.

4. Package your story so the editor can utilize it via their online website, social media platforms. Bonus points if you include a Tweet and Facebook post ready to go.

5. Photographs and videos bring a story to life. In some cases the editor isn’t interested in printing an article in the paper, but may be willing to post a series of photo’s in an online gallery. Provide cut lines for each picture so they do not need to contact you for more information.

Page 8: 735 Windwood Drive Walnut, Ca 91789 February 2019...7. Take prospective members to meetings - don't expect them to come alone. 8. Assign hostesses-new members should never sit alone!

8

6. Letters to the Editor also are a good way to get news posted. Tie your letter and post to the letter or comment on a previous story.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me via email with questions or comments. [email protected] Domestic Violence…………………..Mavis Hansen …626-441-6231 HAPPY NEW YEAR! A beautiful greeting we say to each other with sincere good wishes. Would you extend this same greeting to a victim of domestic violence if you saw them bruised, physically and emotionally, or would you offer your help for their future to change and become happy for them? YOU and your club mates may choose to help these women who are in a domestic violence situation at this time. Your help means that immediate help is available for those in need and can continue until they are able to begin a better life. Ask yourself “What can I do to help?” $$$donations are always welcome, as are the many items, toiletries, clothing, cleaning products, etc….that members donate year round, support of fundraisers or even your time, which is priceless. AGAIN, This chairman asks all the clubs in our SGVD, Do you have a Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Chairman? If not, ask your members, Is anyone Interested and willing to help by volunteering to be the Chairman and bring information to your club? If you are a Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Chairman and will be attending the February 15, 2019 SGVD Board meeting, please let me know. Thank you to all chairmen who turned in reports. Count your blessings if your life is filled with love and kindness from friends and family. club meetings on any topic you choose. Just contact me for a date. Wishing you a wonderful 2019! KINDNESS ANGEL CHAIRMAN: Pat Borchard(909-576-4382) I am so excited to have received 15 Kindness Angel narratives. Thank you to the following clubs for participating: Baldwin Park, Covina, Diamond Bar, Downey, Duarte, Federated East Valley, El Monte, La Crescenta, La Verne-San Dimas, Monterey Park, Pio Pico, Sierra Madre, South Pasadena, Walnut, and West Covina. The gifts have been ordered and I am looking forward to honoring and recognizing our angels at the SGVD Fashion Show in February. PRESIDENT SCRAPBOOK CHAIRMAN: Pat Borchard(909-576-4382) Scrapbook pages for President Rita’s Scrapbook will be distributed at the Birthday Council on January 25, 2019. Each club and section will receive one(1)page to embellish, decorate, create,(front and back), for President Rita’s scrapbook. Each plastic sleeve will have scrapbook pages included. Please use what you are given. Please do not use a different plastic sleeve since all sleeves are not created equal. The sleeves purchased fit the scrapbook that has been purchased. Be as creative as you wish. Include pictures with our District President, when she came to your club function or just include pictures from your club activities. Make the page a memory for our District President. The deadline for your scrapbook page is no later than March 8, 2019, Spring Council. You may turn your pages into Linda Koontz, who will be collecting them for me. I cannot accept your page at convention. If your page is completed by the SGVD Fashion Show, you may turn it over to me then. Hope you all have fun creating pages of memories for President Rita’s Scrapbook. CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR … Marian Hallin …[email protected] Changes have been made from past years and I urge you to check your District Yearbook for information and eliminate the section about Categories of activities should include: as there will no longer be narratives read at Convention. This change has been made due to time and other considerations. It should work well if each club will select their Club Member of the Year by submitting a photo ( 5”x7”) of your selected person for a display board and submit with her/his name, club name, and add to the Yearbook instructions five adjectives of description for the person you have chosen. You may include any office held or Chairmanship the person may hold as well. Thank you for participating in honoring a special member of your club. The deadline for submission is March 8th at the Spring Council or I will collect them any time prior to the March 8th deadline. As previously mentioned in The Key, I hope that you will consider a narrative about your nominee to present at your own club meetings. It can be amazing to hear all of the commitment members make to your club that are made without your membership necessarily knowing about, especially from those behind the scenes quiet members who just step up whenever something is needed. I look forward to seeing your submissions and honoring them at Convention.
