WEEK 4 TERM 2, 16th May 2012

Dear Parent/Carers,
The frosty mornings have started as we begin the first stages of our cold climate that
we all enjoy so much. It continues to be a busy time for us at Wallerawang as we em-
brace new projects, foster existing ones and continue to build our partnership. This
week’s rule is the green rule: I will speak politely and respectfully. It is encouraging
to see that this is being reinforced across the school both in the classroom and play-
ground. It is important that parents are supportive in the educational journey and by
having an understanding of what is happening at school and what is expected makes
this journey more manageable.
The year 3 and 5 children are in the middle of NAPLAN testing. Procedures have
been put in place to accommodate this so the process runs smoothly. Thank you to
Ms Foster and Mrs Combey for their organisation around NAPLAN.
Last Friday I had the pleasure of watching the Boy’s Hockey team play in the first
round match against Cooerwull. Although the boy’s were defeated they played with
enthusiasm and fantastic sportsmanship. The team consisted of many players who
are not regular hockey players. Thank you to Miss Reid and Miss Lang for coaching
and organising the team and to the parents for their support. On Monday, Adam
Neale, Josh Morris and Jarryd Clark will attend the Western Region trials in Lithgow.
We wish them well.
Good luck to the boy’s and girl’s who will be attending the touch football trials in
Wellington on Friday. As names were not confirmed by the time last week’s newslet-
ter went to publication Emma Sheehan, Kayla Giles and Alexis Cathie were also suc-
cessful in joining the girl’s district team. Congratulations!
Mr Alan Beecroft was in attendance at Friday’s assembly to present the Alan
Beecroft sports awards to Ben Murray, Chloe Anlezark, Dylan Miles and Pacey
Stockton. This award is funded through our P&C Association in recognition of the
work that Mr Beecroft and his family have done and continue to do for our school.
The award goes to the children who have made Western Region teams with a $50
cheque to support the purchase of a uniform. CONGRATULATIONS to all 4 for mak-
ing it to this level in their respective sports.
Rugby League Junior Development
Mick Armstrong from Country Rugby league
worked with our K-2 students yesterday on a
variety of skills. Mick enjoys coming to Walle-
rawang and once again the feedback on his
sessions was extremely positive. The boys that
are a member of the under 11’s storm team
were happy to boast their win over Mick’s
Bathurst St Pats team on the weekend.
School Cross Country
Congratulations to Awakaba house who were
the overall point score winners for Cross Coun-
try.
Athletics Carnival
At Friday’s assembly the following children
were announced as age champions and run-
ners up for the Athletics Carnival.
Juniors and Junior Runners Up
Hannah Whyte & Lachlan Wilson
Ebony Seymour & Tanvir Singh
11 years and 11 years Runners Up
Shaqkyra Quinn & Dylan Miles
Holly Beecroft, Lachlan Williams &
Pacey Stockton
12/13 years and 12/13 years Runners Up
Chloe Anlezark & Jarryd Clark
Madi Lampton & Riley Shanahan
The winning house was GILI. Congratulations to these children for their outstanding perfor-mances and to all the students for their partici-pation and to the newly elected canteen con-veners Sharon Rushworth, Debbie Holder and Belinda Wootton for their ordering and organi-sation of the canteen.
Mother’s Day Stall
Thank you to Kelly Cafe and Renee Edwards
for the organisation of the Mothers Day stall
and all the parents who helped on the stall. I
am sure that there were many delighted Mums
on Sunday with the selection of the gifts that
were provided, I know I was!
Next week is an extremely packed week in
terms of school events: Stage 2 have their Co-
lonial Day on Wednesday and thanks to the
donation from Wallerawang Village Meats a
free sausage sizzle. On Thursday the finals of
the Public Speaking competition will be held.
We are privileged to have Mrs Cil Van Der
Velden as part of the judging panel. Congratu-
lations to all children who have presented
speeches to their class or stage. I have been
told by staff that the speeches were all of high
quality and the children’s effort in presenting
outstanding.
Visiting performers will present the ‘Stamp out
Bullying’ show also on Thursday, and, on Fri-
day the district cross country will be held with
children who were placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th in
their age group at our recent school cross
country competing. Thank you to Mr Morrow
for his support in organising this at district lev-
el.
School Garden
Thank you to Natalie and Michael from M&N
Produce our garden beds have arrived. Stage 3
children will work with Sharon Rushworth and
Nicole Woolsey on Friday to put them togeth-
er. Seeds are sprouting in the hot house – in-
cluding broccoli, snow peas, lettuce and radish.
I am sure that Sharon would be delighted to
show any of you on an afternoon when you are
waiting to collect your children from school.
Thank you for the incredible interest in the
proposal for the ‘School Restaurant’. I have
had offers of aprons, dress maker’s skills and
decorators. Thank you to Tania McMillan and
the National Australia Bank that have organ-
ised 30 aprons for us. I look forward to meeting
with Andrew Thompson and his team as we
start the planning process. Keep the sugges-
tions and offers of support coming; this is ex-
citing for our school.
L3 Training
Next week Mrs Warner, Miss Reid and I will
continue with L3 training. Miss Reid and Mrs
Warner have made a huge commitment to
making this program work and applying the
skills and knowledge required, given that they
had both only recently been trained in the
Reading to Learn methodology.
Fish Pond
Work is continuing on the school fish pond.
With Chris Van Der Velden currently construct-
ing a steal box to protect the filtering system.
When this is completed Mr Morrow will adver-
tise for a working bee to continue the process.

I had the pleasure of attending the catholic ball
on Friday night. My niece Brittany Flynn, along
with Kaitlyn Nelson ex-students of our school
were debutantes. They have certainly grown
into mature and sensible young girls who con-
ducted themselves extremely well. Very en-
couraging to see.
As I travel around the weekend sporting circuit
it is fantastic to see the level of involvement of
students and parents. All sports are certainly
strong in the Lithgow area.
Volunteer Week
This week is National Volunteer Week. More
than 6 million people in Australia are volun-
teers! Volunteers are essential to society and
many charities would struggle to survive with-
out the support of their volunteers.
I would like to acknowledge all our volunteers
within our school community. Our school
would not be the great school it is without the
support from all our dedicated families.

National Walk Safely to School Day
National walk safely to school day is this Friday
18th May.
The purpose is to encourage parents, carers
and children to build regular walking to and
from school into their daily routine because
children need a minimum of 60 minutes regu-
lar physical activity per day.
Due to the 2 hour Teacher Stop Work Meeting
that is taking place on Friday between 9am
and 11am, students may still walk to school
and arrive at 11am.
If you can’t walk all the way you may choose to
leave the car a good distance from the school
and walk the rest of the way. This will allow
parents and carers to get regular exercise as
well and will provide opportunities to reinforce
road safety. Students who walk to school will
receive a “Walk Safely to School Day” sticker
upon arrival.
Sports Uniforms—Important
A number of school sporting team uniforms
have not been returned from recent sporting
activities. Please return these items as soon as
possible as they are required for the next team
sporting event.
Lost
Griffin Houston has lost a pair of blue “Flexon”
glasses from the Stage 3 rooms last week. If
you have found this item, please hand them in
to the school office.
Students in Year 2 have been learning about
POWER AND ENERGY.
Each student has brought in a power toy and
explained how it works. As a class we wrote a
procedure about how to make a Moving Toy.
Using recycled household objects, we de-
signed and created our own moving toy. Par-
ents were invited to come and help as students
in 2F cut, glued, stacked, taped, painted and
decorated an odd assortment of Moving Toys.
There were tanks, trucks, cars, doll houses
with doors and swimming pools. Parents
helped to assemble wheels and axles on vehi-
cles and split pins helped the robots move.
Everyone had a great time. We have more
photos on the website.
Boy’s Hockey Team
Last Friday the Boy’s Hockey Team played
their first round game against Cooerwull PS.
While the boys displayed determination and
had opportunities to score unfortunately they
were defeated by a more experienced side.
The boys are commended on their display of
positive attitudes and great sportsmanship
throughout the game. Thank you to the par-
ents and carers who assisted with transport
and offered the boys support and encourage-
ment on the day.
Next Monday trials for the Western Area PSSA
Hockey Team will be held at Lithgow. We
would like to wish Adam Neale, Josh Morris
and Jarryd Clark all the best as they trial for
this team. Good Luck Boys!
Special Thank You
To Dianne Lewis who has conducted an audit
of our school sporting team uniforms over the
past few weeks. This has been a time consum-
ing task and your assistance is very much ap-
preciated by staff and students.

2P’s – Taco recipe
Ingredients 1 kilo beef mince 1 cup water 1 package taco seasoning mix (approx 2-3 tbsp) 12 hard or soft taco shells Toppings like: shredded cheese, chopped tomato, shredded lettuce, chopped onion, salsa, chopped green onions
Food Critics – remarks and
scores.
Congrats 2P – A wonderful effort.
I give you a score of 7/10. The taco was delicious! The toma-to, lettuce and cheese were all cut to the size I like them to be, on a taco. However, I thought the mince was a little fatty and I would have like the shell to have been cooked for a little longer.
Miss Graham
2P, Thank you for providing me with lunch on Friday. It is fantastic to see you working together as a class to create your mas-ter food under the expert guidance of Mr Thomp-son, Mrs Lewis and Miss Gurney. I give you a score of 7 ½ / 10 Mrs Lamborn 2P, Your taco’s were very palata-ble and well presented. We give you a score of 8 ½ / 10. Well done! Mrs Auld and Mrs Van Der Velden
