7he fact that chocolate is not a traditional food0 high prices and domestic productionproblems will pro/ide the main problems to mar8et growth. As these mar8ets de/elop0

prices will fall ma8ing these products more accessible to the wider population. owe/er

the Indian mar8et is still untapped and pro/ides immense scope for growth0 both

geographicall3 as well as product bas8et wise.

5hocolates right now reaches about &%mn to &mn consumers. It is estimated that

    chocolates ha/e a potential mar8et of about $$+mn consumers.

Chocoate consumption in India is e2tremel3 low. Per capita consumption is around

$+%gms in the urban areas0 compared to =1$%8g in the de/eloped countries. 7he per

capita chocolate consumption in India is still much below the !ast Asian standards.

ence per capita consumption has an immense scope for impro/ement. In rural areas0

it is e/en lower. 5hocolates in India are consumed as indulgence and not as a snac8

food. A strong /olume growth was witnessed in the earl3 '%>s when 5adbur3

repositioned chocolates from children to adult consumption. 7he biggest opportunit3 is

li8el3 to stem from increasing the consumer base. ?eading pla3ers li8e 5adbur3 and

"estle ha/e been attempting to do this b3 /alue for mone3 offerings0 which are

affordable to the masses. 4e also belie/e that the near term opportunit3 lies in

increasing penetration rather than increasing intensit3 of consumption.
