The meaning of prayer, almsgiving and fasting -The way to spend the time of Lent well

Lent wants to lead us in view of the victory of Christ over every evil which op-presses man. In turning to the Divine Master, in converting ourselves to Him, in experiencing His mercy. Lent is a period of forty days during which the whole Church renews itself through prayer and fasting. Today we are reminded that the Israelites wandered for forty years in the desert after God led them out of captiv-ity. We are now observing the forty days of Lent. During the Easter Triduum, we will celebrate being led from slavery into freedom. According to today's gospel, Jesus retreated to the desert for forty days to prepare for his mission after being baptized by John the Baptist. Luke dramatically describes what happened to Jesus while he was alone in that deserted place. The devil tempts Jesus with promises of bread (a symbol for material comforts), of power (authority over others), and of false glory (to be gained by daring to test God). But Jesus defeats the devil by de-fending himself with God's word from the Old Testament. Even then the devil does

not give up. He "awaits another opportunity" to tempt Jesus. Lent is the privileged time of an interior pilgrim-age toward the One who is the source of mercy. It is a pilgrimage in which He himself accompanies us through the desert of our poverty, supporting us on the way toward the intense joy of Easter. Prayer: Lord, we look for you and we desire to see your face, grant us that one day, removing the veil, we may be able to contemplate it. We seek you in Scripture which speaks to us of you and under the veil of wisdom, the fruit of the search of people. We look for you in the radiant faces of our brothers and sisters, in the marks of your Passion in the bodies of the suffering. Every creature is signed by your mark, every thing reveals a ray of Your invisible beauty. You are revealed in the service of the brother, you revealed yourself to the brother by the faithful love which never diminishes. Not the eyes but the heart has a vision of You, with simplicity and truth we try to speak with You. Las tentaciones de Jesús-Victoria por medio de la oración y de la Biblia La Cuaresma nos quiere conducir, en vista de la victoria de Cristo, sobre todo mal que oprime al hombre. En el dirigirse al Divino Maestro, en el convertirnos a Él, en el experimentar su misericordia. La Cuaresma es un período de cuarenta días durante el cual toda la Iglesia se renueva a través de la oración y el ayuno. Hoy hemos recordado que los israelitas deambularon durante cuarenta años en el desierto después de que Dios los liberó del cautiverio. Ahora estamos observando los cuarenta días de Cuaresma. Du-rante el Triduum de Pascua, celebraremos el paso de la esclavitud a la libertad. De acuerdo con el evangelio de hoy, Jesús se retiró al desierto durante cuarenta días para prepararse para su misión después de ser bautizado por Juan el Bautista. Lucas describe dramáticamente lo que le pasó a Jesús mientras se encontraba en ese desolado lugar. El diablo tienta a Jesús con las promesas de pan (símbolo de las comodidades físicas), de poder (autoridad sobre los demás), y gloria falsa (tener conocimien-tos superiores a los de Dios). Pero Jesús derrota al diablo al defenderse con la palabra de Dios en el Antiguo Testamento. Sin embargo, el diablo no se rinde, "espera otra oportunidad" para tentar a Jesús. La Cuaresma es el tiempo privilegiado de nuestra peregrinación interior hacia Aquél que es la fuente de mis-ericordia. Es una peregrinación en la que Él mismo nos acompaña a través del desierto de nuestra pobreza sosteniéndonos en el camino hacia el inmenso gozo de la Pascua. Oración: Señor, nosotros te buscamos y deseamos tu rostro, haz que un día, quitado el velo, podamos contemplarlo. Te buscamos en las Escrituras que nos hablan de Ti y bajo el velo de la sabiduría, fruto de la investigación de las gentes Te buscamos en los rostros radiantes de los hermanos, en las improntas de tu pasión en los cuerpos sufrientes.Toda criatura está marcada con tu impronta, toda cosa revela un rayo de Tu invisible belleza. Tú te revelas en el servicio del hermano, al hermano te manifiestas por el amor fiel que no se acaba. No los ojos sino el corazón tienen Tu visión, con simplicidad y veracidad tratamos de hablar contigo.

WHAT IS THE RCIA RITE OF WELCOMING The Rite of Welcoming is for inquirers who have been

previously baptized and are ready to publicly declare their intention to continue their journey toward full communion with

the Catholic Church. At this Rite, they are asked if they are ready to listen to the apostles’ instruction, gather with the

worship community in prayer, and join that community in the love and service of others. They are signed with the Cross to

show that they belong to Christ.

WHY IS THE PARISH COMMUNITY IMPORTANT AT THE RITES OF ACCEPTANCE AND WELCOMING, AND WHEN WILL THESE RITES

BE CELEBRATED? Members of the parish community should affirm that they are

ready to help and support the RCIA candidates seeking to follow Christ. The Rites of Acceptance and Welcoming are celebrated at a time designated by

the parish, and can be offered multiple times, depending upon when a given inquirer is ready to move forward.
