Ramanagar (Andamans)

The month of May began with the celebration of the feastof St. Joseph, the worker, the patron of Kalighat Churchwhich is the sub-station of Ramanagar parish. Fr. JamesPascal Tete, the assistant parish priest went for the same.Liturgy was well prepared and all prayed devotionally.

On 4th May Novena to our Lady of Fatima startedin the parish. Keeping in mind the smooth running ofNovena, responsibilities were shared by various units.Pastoral sisters of the parish left for Port Blair for theirAnnual retreat on 6th May. The Daughters of St. Anne ofRanchi have their retreat separately as they have 7communities in Port Blair diocese. It is the biggest numberof any religious group of sisters. They are expected to beback on 16th May.

The preparation for the First Holy Communionstarted on 9th May. Fr. Benedict took classes in the absenceof sisters. When sisters were back from Port Blair theyhelped Fr. Bene to prepare the children thoroughly and 6children received the First Holy Communion on 26th May.

A good number of people witnessed the event and justafter Holy Mass these children were felicitated.

SCC (Small Christian Community) is given top mostpriority thinking that this will be the mile stone for the changeof the faithful. Consequently, the sisters of St. Joseph ofApparition are given responsibility to take care and guidethe people. In this process they arrived at Ramnagar on10th May. Their programme consisted of house visit, meeting with the people and finally celebration of the HolyMass which is the summit and the centre of our lives. Fr.James accompanied and guided them for the smoothrunning of the programme. They conducted input sessionfor the animators and ultimately they set out on 18th Mayfor the neighbouring parish Kalapahar which is situated onthe road side yet considered to be the most remote area.People just eagerly wait to see sisters.

There was only one Eucharistic celebration in thecentre on 19th May for both Ramnagar and Kalighat, asthe feast of our Lady of Fatima and Abba Diwas wascombined. Liturgy was prepared well and the parish choirplayed a vital role to create the suitable atmosphere forthe faithful to pray well. The parishioners had arranged formeal for all. Therefore there was cultural programme bythe children to express their love for abbas soon after HolyMass. The tasty meal followed thereafter.

This month was concluded with Marian processionin Ramangar but due to heavy rainfalls less number ofpeople arrived and programme got started late. Since itwas raining the Rosary was recited in the Church and itfollowed by the Holy Mass. Fr. Gabriel Toppo, thediocesan priest of Port Blair diocese and the son of thesoil was the main celebrant on the occasion.

Fr. Benedict found himself quite busy with thepreparation of accounts, arranging the office registers, record books and farewell party either for lunch or dinnerduring the month of June. He was given farewell by theparishioners on 10th June after the Holy Mass. Peopleexpressed their gratitude as he served this parish for along period of time.

At the afternoon on 26th June all the fathers andsisters were busy in marriage party, suddenly there wasthe information of arrival of new parish priest Fr. Lalit JohnTigga at 2.00 P.M. This information made them to rushback to the Church gate to receive Fr. Lalit. Some ladiesand one gent Mr.Remis Lakra, the president of the CentreCatholic Sabha were present there to welcome the NewP.P. Hearty welcome Fr. Lalit and all the best wishes foryour future ministry in Andaman Mission.

TANZANIA, AFRICABr. Vincent Soreng, SJ

Br. Vincent Soreng, S.J., was born on 26 May 1936,joined the Society of Jesus on15 July 1955 and took hislast vows on 15 August 1967.

In 1970s Jesuits were required to work in Africa asmissionaries. From various countries, Jesuits were sent toAfrica at different times to Sudan, Kenya, Zambia andother African countries. In that same call Ranchi Provincewas also given a chance. Initially, 5 Jesuits were sent toSudan in January 1971, namely: 1) Fr. Policarp Toppo,

S.J., 2) Fr. John Guria, S.J., 3) Fr. Mathias Toppo, S.J.,4) Br. Tarcitius Toppo, S.J. and 5) Br. Vincent Soreng,S.J.. Of these 5, four of them have gone to the Lord: 1)Fr. Policarp Toppo, and 2) Br. Tarcitius Toppo, died inAfrica itself, and 3) Fr. John Guria and 4) Fr. MathiasToppo died in Ranchi Province, India. 5) Br. VincentSoreng is still going strong, and very much hale and heartyin his mission work in Tanzania. Last year he came to theProvince and visited his people in connection with themarriage of his nephew at Dibadih village, Doranda,Ranchi.

Br. Vincent Soreng was trained as a male nurse witha view to serve the sick and ailing Jesuits in the Provinceand so his life has been centred round the infirmaries. Thismission of serving the sick Br Vincent has been doing allthese years with full dedication and commitment, withoutmaking much fanfare about it, that no other world existedfor him to waste time on. His brisk walks on the corridorsof Manresa House, his focused attention to the work athand, with a cheerful and dedicated bearing, ever open tohelp out anyone who would be coming across in thecorridor, and of course, never judgmental on things orpersons.

The kind hearted Brother, simple and dedicated, thequalities that speak volumes about him. When it came toopt for Africa Mission, there was no hurdle but to embraceit wholeheartedly and then Br. Vincent was off to a distantcountry with a distant vision, and in the course of time, tocap it all with voluminous 49 years in all over there in AfricaMission. Ranchi’s loss was a Tanzania’s gain. All theselong years the brother has created a history through hisdevoted and dedicated works. His works caught the sightof the Society of Jesus and on 3 April 2019, at 9.24 A.M.,

Wednesday, the Society acknowledged his contributionto environmental conservation in this vein from the EasternAfrica Province (AOR) as they eulogized: “Jesuit Br.Vincent Soreng honored by Pope Francis for hiscontribution to the Care for Our Common Home. Mzee(Vincent’s pet name in Tanzania), Br. Vincent Soreng, S.J.,recently received a papal accolade for his care for ourcommon home. The Eastern Africa Province (AOR) Curiaorganized a small gathering to celebrate Br. Vincent, S.J.,as he marked his immense contribution to the realizationof the just promulgated Universal Apostolic Preferencesby the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, Fr. ArturoSosa, S.J., and as confirmed by Pope Francis. The Poperecognized Br. Vincent’s contribution to environmentalconservation through the promotion of horticulture andforestry with his unique style of carrying out the tasks quietlywith great dedication, consistancy, commitment, andamazing diligence. In gratitude for this recognition, thefellow Jesuits and Collaborators joined Br. Vincent for anoutdoor dinner. Br. Vincent graced the celebration in hisRoman Collar (a surprise to many, since that’s not his style)Mzee was honoured with toast from his good friend, Fr.James Ayaga, S.Jj, who said that Mzee Soreng envisionedand implemented LAUDATO Si long before his age matePope Francis promulgated it.

Congratulations Mzee on this milestone, we rejoicetogether and celebrate your contribution to a greenerworld!”

the Holy Eucharist to the full satisfaction and appreciationof the audience. His teaching ministry had been a successfulone as well with producing good results, maintainingdiscipline among the staff and students. No instrument, gadget or equipment, either musical or mechanical, wouldremain idle without being set right or repaired by him. Heknew where the trouble lay. In a company he would crackjokes or pass comments with a pinch of a humour, yetbearing the hard truth. He was not much of a talker, yetwhenever he presented his plan it was in good and perfectlanguage as he had the command and flair for languages. He had friendly approach to persons and things mostly,

not outright rejecting or discouraging to the visitor. He wasserious in his works and engagements, not wasting timeon unnecessary things like gossiping for hours. He meantbusiness dutifully in all he did in rather quiet and detachedmood. By that he produced excellent result. He exhibitedconfidence and ability in his going about in the daily life.He had many more years to go, had he been aware of thetrouble he faced. But rather he neglected himself about hishealth and treatment. In him Ranchi Province has lost atalented and able Jesuit before time. May the good Lordgive him eternal rest in His company!
