Dans ce cadre enchanté quést la vallée de lÉngadine, nous donnons une cordiale bienvenue aux participants qui viennent dépuis des années avec leurs accompagnateurs et à ceux qui ont décidé de jouer pour la première fois à St. Moritz.

What to do before or after playing bridge?THE ST. MORITZ BUCKET LIST 10 UNFORGETTABLE HIGHLIGHTS1. SKATING ON THE ICE RINK OF THE KULM HOTELFor the 2017 world ski championships, the Kulm Hotel has brought to life a historic monument in the center of St. Moritz. Star architect Norman Foster, an ardent St. Moritz fan, has renovated an extended the Olympic Ice Pavillon dating back to 1905. Now called the «Kulm Country Club», it houses a public restaurant with terrace, a bar-lounge and a skate rental facility. Verdict: Really outstanding!

2. RIDE THE CRESTA RUNCourageous men and new also women in full body suits transform themselves into human torpedoes. We are talking about the Cresta Run in St. Moritz on something slightly better than an ironing board. It is practiced on an ice channel between St. Moritz and Celerina. For 90 years this sport was for men only. Now on certain days women are allowed to use the track.Registration at the Cresta Run office is necessary. Beginners training courses are offered.

3. BE INSPIRED BY GIOVANNI SEGANTINIThe monumental alp triptych «Werden-Sein-Vergehen» (Life, Nature and Death)) in the dome of the Segantini museum is definitely worth a visit. Giovanni Segantini (1858–1899) is considered an important artist of realistic symbolism who has breathed new life into Alpine painting in the late 19th century. He moved to the Engadin in 1894. 1908 the Segantini museum was opened in his honor.

4. IF YOU CAN SKI, THEN DEFINITELY GO SKIING!350 km of ski slopes welcome you in St. Moritz for example on the mountains Corviglia, Corvatsch and Diavolezza. Once in your life you should ski down the 9 km Hahnensee slope from the Corvatsch to St. Moritz Bad (can also be done at nicht). Corviglia combines life style and winter sport like no other skiing area. It even has a yoga slope – the first one in the world. On the Corviglia you will find some lovely restaurants such as the Paradiso, Strutz and the famous Alpina where the motto at the snow bar is «see and be seen»!

5. SKI AT NIGHTOn the Corvatsch Snow Night you can ski every Friday until 2.00 a.m. on the longest illuminated ski run in Switzerland (4.2 km). After skiing you can head off to the legen-dary Hossa Bar, where the party continues with «hip swinging».

6. CASINO IN ST. MORITZTry your luck in the casino of St. Moritz. You will find American roulette, Black Jack, ulti-mate Texas Hold›em poker and slot machi-nes. Just feel like James Bond for a few hours.

7. WALK TO STAZERSEEThere are many lovely walks in St. Moritz but my favorite – if I do not have much time - is the walk to the Restaurant at the Stazersee or «Lej da Staz» via the lake of St. Moritz. It takes about half an hour to get there and they have a great little cake buffet. If you decide to walk longer – no problem – you can walk all the way to Celerina and take the bus back.

8. ENJOY A WHISKYIn the Hotel Waldhaus am See you will find the largest whisky collection in the world. «Devils Place» – the name of the Bar – offers 2´500.-- different kinds of whisky. This amazing collection of whiskys has made it into the pages of the «Guiness Book of World Records» various times.

9. LET YOURSELF BE SPOILED IN A SPAThe OVAVERA at the Spa and Sport center in St. Moritz has a lovely long swimming pool (25 meters) and also offers various Spa treatments. They also have a fitness center with 600 m2 with modern facilities. You can also spend the day in the lovely Spas of Badrutt›s Palace Hotel, Carlton Hotel and the Kulm Hotel. By the way: genuine St. Moritz springwater can be enjoyed in St. Moritz SPa., Forum Paracelsus or Kempinski-Spa.

10. WALNUT TARTThe walnut tart is the ultimate guilty pleasure. Generations of local confectioners have continued to refine this speciality filled with cream, caramel and chunky walnuts. The result is today›s renowned Engadin «tuorta da nusch engiadinaisa» – a baking tradition that international visitors have carried back to all corners of the globe. It is available in the Conditorei Hanselmann. It can easily be taken home as it lasts for at least 3 months.

Two years ago, I decided for the first time to play bridge in a winter location. As soon as I arrived to St. Moritz, I was very sur-prised how beautiful it was. A perfect place for skiing, wonderful restaurants and fantastic hotels where the bridge tournaments are held.

Now, St. Moritz is first on my list to start my bridge calendar.

Since I will again miss the “summer time” in January this year, I visited Beirut last September to enjoy the sun, beach, excellent food, night life and of course, bridge. I have an interesting hand that came up during the festival that I would like to share with you.

After the lead, we know that East has all the missing spades. It looks like we have two spade losers. Can we avoid that? The only way would be to endplay our left hand opponent to

give us a ruff and sluff.Can we achieve that?In order for this to work, we need him to have five or more

diamonds or four diamonds including the King and Queen.Now it is time to plan the play.

Unfortunetely the first lead took away one of our entries to the dummy.

We win the lead and play a diamond to the Ace. We contin-ue with the ♥10 to dummy’s Ace and are happy to see that East followed with the Queen of hearts. Now we ruff a diamond and play the ♥9 to the Jack. We ruff one more diamond. Now we finish the elimination by ruffing our last club. We reach this ending:

Maria Erhart TrophyMaria Erhart, eine der besten Bridgespielerinnen unserer Zeit, weilt seit 2012 nicht mehr unter uns. Sie wird aber in ihrem Himmelsdasein sich immer noch über unsere dummen Fehler ärgern und bedauern, nicht mehr nach St. Moritz kommen zu können. Dieses Turnier war immer eines der Wichtigsten in ihrem Kalender und sie hat zusammen mit ihrem Mann - Peter Erhart - des öfteren beträchtliche Hindernisse überwunden, um im Januar ins Engadin zu fahren.

Zur Erinnerung an Maria hat Peter Erhart in 2012 einen neuen Wettbewerb ins Leben gerufen - die Maria Erhart Trophy. Es gibt einen Glas-Wanderpreis mit einer kleinen Replik für den Jahresgewinner sowie einen angemessenen Geldpreis. Gewertet wird die beste Performance aus Mixed, Open und Team-Turnier mit unterschiedlichen Quotienten. Endgültig gewinnt den grossen Glaspreis, wer zweimal hintereinander oder dreimal in 5 Jahren den ersten Platz belegt.

Es wäre schön, wenn dieser Preis einen weiteren Anreiz darstellen würde, das Turnier in all seinen Wertungen zu spielen und wir uns noch lange der St. Moritzer Gastfreundschaft erfreuen können.
