Thommo’s Talk (in lieu of Greg’s Gazette)

As a Past President, I had the privilege of subbing off the bench for President Greg, who is away

with work commitments.

The early days of the school break always seem to create apologies from club members and this

Tuesday morning was no exception. We were low in number, but high in spirit.

In his absence, President Greg had also arranged a Quiz, which had an Australiana and Rotary

Theme and was in lieu of the usual Guest Speaker.

Pamela was the Quiz Mistress and is seen below checking on the progress of Bronny, who

somewhat disloyally, wanted to switch to Lindsay’s table for reasons that soon became apparent.

Lindsay’s table scored a healthy 21 out of a possible 25. At the other end of the scale saw the head

table consisting of myself and Acting Sergeant John C score just 7. The burden of leadership was

too great for us, what with planning the next coffee break and other matters on the agenda.

The name of WWI Prime Minister, Billy Hughes on the Quiz Sheet, was a trigger for Wayne to wax

lyrical on the actual age of this venerable politician. This intriguing question kept us enthralled for

what seemed like minutes.

Anyway, you could probably pick up that Tuesday’s meeting was a light hearted event and the food

was so good that even Chef Gary joined us at the table.

President Greg thought of everything, such as his Thought for the Day and other trivia.

1862 - Australian Prime Minister during WWI, Billy Hughes, is born.

1956 - The world's first trans-Atlantic telephone cable system commences operations.

1957 - Over 1000 US paratroopers are required to escort nine black students into a

previously all-white school.

Politicians and diapers should be changed frequently and all for the same reason.

Hi Sunrisers and greetings from Perth. I hope the quiz meeting on Tuesday was not too difficult and

you all had a bit of fun. I had the pleasure of doing a makeup meeting at the Rotary Club of

Northbridge which is on the outskirts of the city and within walking distance of where I am staying.

They are a club of similar size to ours with a similar age and sex ratio to ours and also follow a

similar meeting format, although on a Monday evening and over 2 hours.

I was made feel most welcome from the moment I walked through the doors of the function room

where they meet - Oliver’s on James Street in Northbridge…..awesome food!! I did look them up

before contacting them and must admit one thing that caught my eye and attracted me was they

advertised themselves as a non-singing club…phew!! As I said their format is similar to ours as

they do a toast to Australia and a prayer/invocation and as with our club, their president was away

on business.

They had a guest speaker who was a previous member of the club who had grown an Advertising

business up from scratch. His talk was on what it takes to run a successful Advertising business in

2012. It was an interesting piece but I must admit my favourite part of my makeup was meeting all

these new Rotarians who were interested in getting to know me and our club. I will be back over

here a few times over the next few months and have told them I will be back to visit which pleased

them no end (I don’t think they get many visitors, let alone Rotarians).

So it’s back to normal next week and you have to put up with me again. I look forward to seeing you

all again then.

Magill Sunrise members are now enrolled on Roving Lifestyles

Access to the Roving Lifestyles website (http://www.rovinglifestyles.com.au/) has now been

provided to each of the Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise members.

We can now enrol our members and friends - shop - and start to reap the benefits.

A reminder - How it works

Merchants advertise their products or special deals on the Roving Lifestyles website.

Participating Clubs register (done).

Members of the Club are enrolled as ‘Rovers’ (done).

Rovers can log-on to the website and have access to exclusive offers from trusted merchants on

products and services at a fair and sustainable price.

A percentage of each sale is remitted to a nominated Rotary Club or program.

As a member, you may invite your Family or Friends to also enrol and shop for products and

services - meaning more benefits for everyone.

What’s Next?

You should now have received your log-on details and further instructions from Lindsay Davis

(the Magill Sunrise club coordinator).

Log in, reset your password and enter any other details you wish to store.

Check out some of the products already being advertised. Buy if you wish as a percentage of

the purchase price will be donated back to Magill Sunrise (minimum 5%).

Then:

• suggest other merchants, products and services that could be on Roving Lifestyles

• invite family and friends to also become Rovers (and further assist our club).

Why do it?

Magill Sunrise has a special opportunity to help develop this new initiative which aims to make

giving to the community a part of everyday life.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of a worthy enterprise and in particular to encourage and foster

The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by every Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve

society.

The application of the ideal service by every Rotarian to their personal, business and community life.

The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

The Four Way Test of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth? Is it Fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

For good food, good fellowship And the opportunity to serve through Rotary

…we give thanks.
