Robert Hooke invented the microscope and was the first person to describe cells in 1665. In 1673 Leeuwenhoek became the first person to see bacteria under the microscope. In 1838 Schleiden concluded that plants were made of cells. In 1839 Schwann stated all organisms are made of one or more cells and cells are the basic units of life. In 1858, Virchow stated all cells come from existing cells.
