The QuickSkills Academy is a division of PC Training & Business College. PC Training and Business College has to date made available 30 000 Tablet PCs to learners registering for High-er and Further Education qualifications, FREE of charge, when they enroll at the College for a qualification.

For the year 2014 PCT & BC has adopted the Lenovo S6000L Tablet PC, an IBM subsidiary, which creates and builds exceptionally engi-neered personal technology and is seen as a next generation global company. This means the company is ahead of its game in terms of understanding what it will take to win 5 - 10 years from now. Lenovo is growing rapidly and winning market share in all parts of the world. This balanced growth is what has made Lenovo the fastest growing major PC Company and enabled them to consistently grow faster than the market. L e n o v o ’ s mission is to become one of the world’s great p e r s o n a l t e c h n o l o g y companies.

Students regis-tering for PC Train-ing & Business Col-lege qualifications will now receive a Lenovo 10.1“ S6000L HD screen with 16 GB storage space. The tab-let PC is pre-loaded with educational materials, in- c l u d i n g study-guides and access to the Institutions Learner Campus Administration System and its Learner Management System.

Apart from the convenience of carrying fewer textbooks, students also benefit from always having their content with them anytime and anywhere, at their finger-tips. The Tablet PC allows for easy and convenient downloading, communicating, collaborating, sharing and fa-cilitating engagement in the learning experi-ence at the Institution.

New technology significantly changes the learning experiences and lecturers’ interac-tions. Distance learners receive most of their learning material including certain lecture videos pre-loaded and readily available from their Tablet PC's, creating a culture of learner centred-

ness. The Tablet PC’s compact, convertible design allows learn-ers to comfortably make use of the device in small spaces.

Tablet PCs also include Wi-Fi and i n t e r n e t support . L e a r n -ers can quick ly

jot down notes from math-

ematical formulas to flow charts because they’re electronic

and can re-organize their notes, save items in the cloud and search for them later.

This Institution has also successfully migrated to the Moodle Learning Management System which also incorporates certain College lecture videos as they are developed. Global podcasts of experts’ opinions on pertinent subjects and ac-cess to real-time interactive learning experienc-es through webinars and chat rooms locally and around the world, together with free internet at Campuses makes learning programmes more engaging, interesting and fun. Online assess-ments give learners more chances to improve their overall performance, and ultimately their chances of success.

Mobile Learning: A Holistic African Solution...

Distance Education learners will also have the add-ed advantage of accessing e–libraries irrespective of where they are, empowering them to draw from a wider range of research material from all over the world. In addition, learners have online access to the Integrated Campus Administration System and e-library for assignments, accounts information and examination results.

The Tablet PC also creates a ‘green’ culture that will benefit the environment by encouraging learners and educators to move away from the exorbitant use of paper and printing, saving over 200 tons of paper per year.

The Institution has also gained a reputation amongst leading em-ployers and industry organizations for out-standing performance in the Education Sec-tor. Its' accomplish-ments include awards for business growth, community engage-ment, customer focus, economic develop-ment, gender empow-erment and business education and training.

The technological lead-ership and ongoing deployment of Tablet PC's further enhances the Institution's standing as a world-class Distance Education Institution...

Professor Daphne Koller, of Stanford University and the co-founder of Coursera, has expounded the virtues of ‘On Line Learning’ citing several ad-

vantages to this approach to education. “When moving away from the restraints of a physical classroom and designing content for an online course you have the advantage of being able to break the content down into 8 to 12 minute mod-

ules as opposed to the 1 hour ‘one size fits all’ standard lecture. This means that Students can use the material to their greatest benefit allowing them to fol-low a much more per-sonalised curriculum,” states Professor Koller.

Harvard Professor, Daphne Koller, has chal-lenged the global ICT sector to provide ICT solutions that will make teaching and learning more fun, stimulating and engaging on a glob-

al scale. Prof Koller also refers to Richard Blooms research of 1984 which compared three popula-tion samples in different learning situations and with the success generated by each population. This is explained briefly to demonstrate how you can benefit.

Executive Officer (Operations)

The first population was represented by the blue line in the graph alongside. Learners studied in a lecture based classroom where teaching outcomes allow for about 50% of the students to be above average.

The second is a population of students who, used a standard lecture based classroom, but with a mas-tery based approach, which requires learners to demonstrate mastering the previous topic, before moving onto the next one. Some improvements in achievement scores above lecture based learning were noted. See the Red Curve Rise.

The third curve, Green line, indicates the success achieved with one on one tutoring. It would be phe-nomenal if we could teach so that 98% of our stu-dents were above average - unfortunately we cannot provide each student with an individual tutor, HOW-EVER, we can provide our students with a Tablet PC and other technically savy applications in the curriculum.

The experience of PC Training and Business College in deploying technology in education has contrib-uted to Professor Kollers’ search for methods of

instruction which can be as effective as one-on-one tutoring . The use of technology in education can contribute to meaningful improvements to

the quality of teaching and learning and overall success rate of learners as demonstrated by PC Training and Business College.

The Graph below com-pares the year 2011 when printed study guides were used to 2012 and the first se-

mester of 2013, indicating significant improve-ments in success rates of contact learners. What this simply means is that you have a greater chance of success by studying with us. The GOAL - is to try and push and see how far we get towards the green curves...or even rise above it!
