Every summer, for the past 400 years orso, the small town of Gujo Hachiman,Japan puts on a summer dance festivalthat attracts over 350,000 visitors. For asmall town in the middle of the moun-tains of Gifu Prefecture with a populationof only 16,000 people this is remarkable. That the dance festival has never misseda year in its long history is also remark-able. Likewise is the fact that the festival, called Gujo Odori, is considered one ofthe three most famous dance festivals in

Japan and is designated a significant intangible folk cultural assetby the Japanese government. But what is truly remarkable is thatthis festival continues to remain relevant and well attended in amodern age where old-fashioned and traditional pastimesincreasingly compete for attention alongside modern diversions.

The fact that the festival can be enjoyed regardless of age orskill level makes Gujo Odori one of the most accessible dance fes-tivals in Japan. It is quite simply an event where your ability todance comes second to your desire to participate, where beingthere is more important than how well you can dance.

While the actual year Gujo Odori was started is not preciselyknown, Gujo Odori is said to have been started by Lord EndoYoshitaka in the Tokugawa Period over 400 years ago. This dancefestival was Lord Endo’s attempt to encourage all of the town's

citizens, regardless of social level or position, to join together dur-ing the summer obon period to dance together, socialize, and for-get the challenges and hardships of daily life. To create the festi-val known today as Gujo Odori, Lord Endo encouraged the smallvillages surrounding the then newly developed Gujo Hachiman tobring their obon songs and dances to Gujo Hachiman and createa new dance festival. It is this original spirit of inclusion and com-munity that over 400 years later survives as the heart and soul ofan extremely popular summer dance festival where people from allwalks of life and social position continue to come and join togeth-er to dance, to socialize, and to forget the challenges of daily life.

On Friday March 9, 2007 at 7:00 pm, the Japanese CanadianCultural Centre will host Gujo Odori Night. On this evening, sixdancers from Japan will perform the 10 dances of Gujo Odori, andwill also conduct a workshop session to teach participants threedances – “Kawasaki”, “Haru Koma” and “Gen Gen Bala Bala”.This is a rare opportunity to experience this unique dance festivalfirst-hand in an interactive and intimate manner, and it is also anopportunity to meet the performers.

This special evening at the JCCC is also a preview of an eventplanned for 2008 when for two nights Gujo Odori will be held atDundas Square in downtown Toronto. For the 2008 event, per-formers will include dancers and musicians from Japan. Pleasecall the JCCC at 416-441-2345 to register for this free workshop. This event is open to all ages. Wear your yukata and geta if youwant! Refreshments will be served.

As spring returns sodoes our annualJapanese floral tradi-tion. 2007 marks theIkenobo IkebanaSociety of Toronto’s44th Annual FloralShow, entitled,“Utsuku shiki to wa”(loosely translated,“as for beauty”), to beheld on Sunday

March 25, 2007 at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre(JCCC). Last year, as many as 300 guests flocked to admire theover 50 floral works, enhanced by live demonstrations byProfessor Shinichi Shimizu direct from Ikenobo Headquarters ofKyoto, Japan.

Ikenobo embodies the “Spirit of Harmony” – a mystical placewhere floral material and surroundings converge with the soul ofthe arranger and viewer. As Ikenobo students and teachers, we

have embarked on a continuous journey of learning and experi-encing. Each floral show presents members of our IkenoboIkebana Society with a new opportunity to express our innermostthoughts and desires.

For the occasion of our 44th Floral Show, IkenoboHeadquarters will be honouring us with the expertise of ProfessorMitsuko Kato to conduct the demonstrations. December 31 saw the return ofglitz and glamour in theKobayashi Hall, for the annualNew Year’s Eve Dinner andDance. Over 200 revelers startedthe evening with a delicious buf-fet by Calvert’s Catering that fea-tured prime rib roast. This wasfollowed by dazzling displays ofballroom dancing to the musicalaccompaniment of disc jockeys,Ralph and Theresa Yuan. The ele-gant dancers floated around the

room amid the sparkling lights of a mystical winter wonderland.Midnight brought the arrival of 2007 to the sounds Auld LangSyne and the sights of multi-coloured balloons cascading down

from the ceiling. The next afternoon Kobayashi Hall was again the place to

be for the annual Shin-nen Kai New Year’s Day Banquet. Theover 200 attendees celebrated the start of a new year with anincredible evening of fine dining and entertainment. Kunio Ishiiof Toriichi Catering outdid himself in preparing the star of theshow. The buffet was an incredible array of traditional o-sechiryori (new year’s dishes) and Canadian delicacies. February 2007

Start off the New Year...with a Gift

2007 has started off splendidly for the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in light of the current and very successful showcase of the Asahi Baseball Team Exhibition. Like many of the previous events held at the cultural centre, most notably the Road to Asia, guests were delighted with an evening full of culture and flare. Attendees were entertained with a historical account of the Asahi team, the opportunity to meet two of the original Asahi team members and a tour of the gallery. All this would not have been made possible without the planned giving contributed by donors to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.

Giving monetary gifts in support of a foundation or an organization can commonly be mistaken as a financial burden. But what is often overlooked is the strategy of planned giving. Not only does this approach maximize one’s contribution, but it also maximizes the benefits to one’s family and their supported charity.

Planned giving constitutes a calculated method of making charitable gifts of estate assets and/or monetary gifts in support of a charity organization that lies within a donor’s faculty. Provided as such, gift planning empowers the donor to actively play a role in making decisions on what percentage of their income they wish to donate and the form in which they wish to make their contribution in: will bequests, life insurance, annual planned funding, real estate, or publicly traded stocks and mutual funds. An online software known to have aided in facilitation of planned giving is the Giftabulator. Its versatility in establishing strategic methods of giving – through the calculations of one’s income, assets, tax rates and interest rates – makes it unique in the market and very popular among financial service institutions, estate planners, and non-for-profit organizations. Visit www.Giftabulator-Beta.com and give the software a try as an individual and see what it can do for you and what legacy you can leave with the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Wendy Tran
