Future Leaders Award 3

A message from Gwen Rhys, Founder and CEO, Women in the City

Is your way the leader’s way?

Welcome to the 7th Symposium and Future Leaders Award Ceremony. Last month, I heard Inna Baigozina-Goreli, a 2014 Women in the City, Woman of Achievement Award Winner and a Partner with global consultancy firm A T Kearney, present its report: A Portrait of 21st Century Leadership.

The interviewees in this global research were high performing male and female leaders, some of whom were drawn from our own Award Alumni and the result was “The Leaders Way” - how leaders make winning business choices.

Is the Leader’s Way different for men and women?

Courage and confidence are valued highly by men and women alike and it’s courageous women who end up succeeding in male-dominated cultures.

Both genders rank passion high on their list of valued qualities. Curiosity raised to the level of passion results in getting noticed.

Unsurprisingly balancing work and family highlighted some differences. Women underline how they successfully manage family and business thanks to support from relevant others (including husbands leaving their jobs or taking a pause to favour their wives’ career development). For men, work and family together often provide a source of stability and balance.

Women reported that they routinely encountered challenges in adapting to the “male” culture prevailing in top management with networking and mentoring skills perceived as “male” abilities.

In summary, the 21st Century Leader• thinks “differently” in volatile, rapidly evolving markets.

• adapts to stimuli, understands complexity, and takes inspiration from change.

• takes risks. Takes the organisation beyond its boundaries.

• executes in collaboration with talented teams and gives teams real power.

• communicates with stakeholders and can move hearts and minds so that they understand the benefits of a strategy.

• has courage, shows passion.  Remember, you can never be over courageous!

• is authentic.  Although men and women apply the same sets of functional management skills, they differ in how they apply them and in how they value the human dynamics of their organisations.

I was very mindful of these qualities and traits when interviewing our short-listed candidates and as you will see for yourselves, our 2016 Future Leaders are on the pathway to great leadership.

22.00 Close

It must be hard to go into work every day knowing that the odds are stacked against you as a woman. You are facing a primarily male-dominated environment and you know all the statistics about lack of advancement opportunities, unconscious or hidden discrimination and lower pay for doing the same job as a man. Dispiriting! But at least you know the odds – so you know what you’re working with. And you also know that resilience is likely to be your biggest asset – the ability to bounce back when you face adversity.

But like many simple words, delivering is a whole lot tougher. What is resilience? Based on my research, I think it’s only one part of a more complex equation.

Thriving in business today definitely takes endurance. The ride in a VUCA world is a lot more unpredictable than it used to be and, given the lengthening lifespan of the human race, it’s also likely to last a lot longer than it used to. As such, the ability to sustain a prolonged stressful effort or activity is a more challenging concept than just getting your head down and keeping going. It needs some finessing.

Resilience is core to the endurance formula because you need to bounce back when you face setbacks. As a runner, I speak from personal experience when I say that it’s a bit like running a marathon, because we need recovery time for our lungs, muscles and bones. But it’s not enough on its own. We also need adaptability, because constantly changing circumstances mean that we won’t bounce back in exactly the same shape. Our muscles may be stronger, but we may have a pulled tendon to manage.

Whatever the differences, our physiology won’t be exactly the same and we need to be able to work just as well, or better, in our new form. And we also need perseverance. This gives us the energy, and the stickability, to keep going until we achieve our goals. It’s the equivalent of the sport jelly beans you eat in the last five miles of the marathon, to keep you going. And all of this, the whole equation, is underpinned by our reserves. If we have built reserves, we can sustain ourselves a whole lot longer. If we are running on empty, the whole equation could crumble at the first hurdle. Let’s focus on our resilience and on building our reserves. How do we do this?

Psychological resilience is an individual’s capacity to cope with stress and adversity. An individual may suffer from stress and bounce back, or be resistant to stress and not suffer negative effects at all. The main point is that resilience is a process, not a personality

trait. We can all build resilience. To do so you need a support network, like friends and family, or supportive HR and other processes at work. And you also need personal coping mechanisms, like downtime – time to allow your mind and body to recover. It might be more sleep, or more theatre visits or time at the gym; whatever you love that does you good. Think about how terror networks and microbial infections survive, despite sustained attempts to eliminate them. They reduce operations to near dormancy for long periods, giving them the strength to scale up for all-out, periodic attacks. They are building deep reserves, so that their resilience tank lasts longer. Regrouping and recovery give them the energy for the next assault.

And it’s the same for you. Focus, make choices. Decide when to watch and bide your time and when to make your next move. As the old adage goes, don’t sweat the small stuff! I have advised so many senior females who want to be perfect at everything. Most women aren’t Wonder Woman and it just kills you in the long run. Plan ahead, make strategic moves and, above all, look after yourself. Care less, so that you can matter more in the long run.
