1. In order to eorrect certain obvious errors and to re1110ve all doubt as to the

aggressive prosecution by the 7th M>rines of the initial phases of this important

battle, the following nar~tive is submitted.

2. on 24 1-t>y 1951, at or about 1200K, 1 received verbal orders fro• the Commnding

General, 1st M~rine Division in person, at the Regimental CP just north of RClliiG

CRCllil to move out in the attack at 15QOX. We were to move by motor ~d follow the

23rd Infantry in column. The 23rd Infantry had priority an the road~

The 3rd Battalion, 7th Ml.rines was leading the column. :ro sign of the 23rd

1500K. The axis of advance was the Hongcho~~r-Inje road te the vicinity of CHOLGOL

(D5-l798) by motor, and from CHO~OL to objective VICTOR by :toot.

organization of the battalion for the move was •H" CoJ!!PaiiO" (Reinforced)

canst i tut ing advance :pllrty and support; the bat tali on eo1111>cnd group; and the

reserve consisting of "I" Company, ~Tea.pons Company, the 'lle.ttalion train, and

!1GII Couq>any. Check points along the route of advance were designated as

follows: Check point cme - CHOGUUN (DSOQOOV); check poiat two - HANGYE

(DSlls4W); cheek point three- CHA~l!II (DS1490A); check point four- ORONNI

(DS1797R).

Information of oUl' front lines was vsgue but they were believed to be in the

vicinity of CHAJmli (DS1490). There ,.as no inforoation of the enemy.

At l500K, the battalion was aboard trucks and ready to move out. The move

was held up, however, bu order of the Commanding Officer, 7th Mu'ines until

l6oOK. At 1600K the battalion moved out. :Before the leading elements arrived

at check point one, the Commanding Officer, 7th Marines 41rected the 3d

Battalion to stop at cheek point one until the 23d Regi•nt of the second

Division pulled on the road ahead of OUl' convoy, then to follow them north

IORrd. I then •oved ahead of the convoy to check point one. There was no

evidence of any Second Division convoy or troops at or near this ~oint. This

"£S reported at l630K to the ColllJIII.IIding Officer, 7th Mu'ines, who then ordered

the convoy to proceed re~dless of the absence of the Second Division troops.

This was done. The advance party reached check point two at l700K. At this

time in view of the lack of inforwtion concerning the :front lines I discoatched

rcy 5-3 ahead of the convoy t<lll the vicinity of check poillt three where, it was

and five or six rounds of mortar fire were received initially.

"H" Company, the advance party, acted promptly and properly. Troops debarked

<J.Uickly, control was naintained and the coq>any ooved forward to eng:.ge the

The battalion bad been directed to attack at lOOOK and seize objective 5 a.t 1496M. In view of the tactical importance of Hill 625 at 139bR and the disadvAntage of attac ing across CO!li[J"-rtllents, I d.irected "I" Compe.r~ to take Hill 625 a.nd then, on rn.,v orders, to take ob-Jective 5. "G" Company was to mon behind 11 I"Cor:~pany to take the high ground. 11t 1395R from which it could sup:o.ort "I" CompaJlY' s attack. 11 H" Co~a . .n .. .y was ordered t..o follo"'.r "G" Company, prepared to attack on order.

"I" Company co=.enced the attack at 1000!' and shortl)· after :noving 0ut

began receiving heavy autonntic weapons and SIIRll P.rms fire from hill

5 rou~ds of l20mm mortar fire.

JUJII

At ll05K, 11 ! 11 Colllpl'-ny reported eneJey "all over" hill 625. The attacc: of •I•

Compan;)', which bad been stO!J::oed by enemy fire, was resumed at 114oK >rith

"111 Compall;i- suonorting. By 121CK elements of 11 I 11 Company reached the saddle

at DS1395!-i. At this time "I" Company received extremely heavy autom>tic

weapens and snnll arms fire from hill 625 and 11G11 Company received snnll

arms fire. The forward elerents of "I" Colll?any withdrew to more tenable

,;round and :?re:oarecl for another assaUt.

Meanwhile, at l300K, 11 H11 Com:?any at 149l'H o'oserved over fifty enemy en hill

'+73 and com1aenced firing on them \dth attached heavy nnchine guns. I

ordered artillery fire pl2.cad on the reverse sl03Js of h1H 473 and io1llled

i£tely thereafter I counted over 2)0 eneJey breaking into t!te o:,oen and running

from hill 473 northwes'o o_long the ridge leading to objective 5, soma ,<ere

carrying stretchers. Heavy artiller;y fire was brought ~o bear on these

troO}Js and over 150 were later counted in this area.

At l4DOK 11 I" Company again mvved in to take hill :)25. This was coordinated

>.>ith an e,ttac:c by 11 H11 Coffi}Jan;r directly northwest to take nbjective 5. In

spite of a determined enemy defence of hill 625, "I" Comp"-n.v seized it at

lb45K at a cost of 8 wounded in action. 11E11 oompP.n;. seized objective 5 at 1735K. 11 H11 Company C2:?tured 4 prisoners of war and "I" Coffi}Jan;_-- ca~tured 1

prisoner. Counted enemJ' dead in the immediate vicinity of hill 625 amounted

to 55. An additional 100 killed and 300 '-'ounded were estimated.

It is my opinion that the action of the 7th ~IU'ines in enveloping hill 473

and delivering fire on its reverse slope wts decisive in breaking the

r<><"-d block. Furthero1ore the imnortance of hill 625 ""'-s recognized by the enenzy

as she>.~ by his determined defense. The seisura of hill 625 and objective

5 resulted in his losing the ke;,' terrain features of the ridge line he w"'lS

defendine:, and effective!;- elimins-ted. e,n,r o-,cortunity for him to reorg9,nize

and re&Toup his shattered forces.
