Editorial Putting the last call out for ball photos. If you have a son/daughter who has attended their year 12

this year send in a pic and some details of when and where the ball was held. We will publish in the next Lakes Link. Will need the photos by Friday 15th May.

A big welcome to Jayne Argent who is currently doing some work for the Telecentre to gain herself

some extra work experience.

These sporting notes are getting very interesting! The proof readers are getting an extra spring in

their step and looking forward to more of where that came from. Please be aware that player profiles are tongue in cheek!

Thank you to those who have given information on old photographs that they have. If you have

some photos or memorabilia that you are happy for us to scan for future generations then please give me a call.

For those who have been muttering rude

things about me regarding previous (apparently quite difficult) Sudoku you will be pleased to know that Jayne has located some easier ones. If you‘re still having trouble curse Jayne!!!

Oops. How could I forget? Thank you to

Jane Bushby for coming and slogging it out on the computer this fortnight.

Australian troops‘ involvement in Europe, the Middle East, Papua New Guinea and the Japanese attack on Darwin. A short video about the Kokoda trail followed. The cadets marched to the front and our Lake Grace veterans and representatives were introduced to the students as they marched between the cadets. Present were Gordon Pelham, Henk Doelman, Bill Jenks, Mary Eggers, Len and Shirley Elliott, Gert O‘Neill, John and Nellie Lay and Horace Smith. The wreath laying service, representing all young Australian‘s today, was carried out by Head boy Harley Pittard and year one student Clancy Lay. The last post was sounded followed by a minutes silence; this was broken by the sounding of Reveille. The service was completed with the singing of the National Anthem. Morning tea was then provided in the staff room for all representatives and visitors. With the passing of Mrs Pat Strevett last year, it seemed appropriate to take the opportunity to interview our Lake Grace ANZAC fighters and those representing them, recording the

testimonies of their involvement in the Armed Services. The video recording of this year‘s Lake Grace District High School and Lake Grace Community ANZAC Commemoration will be added to the testimonies and placed in the Lake Grace Library (in DVD format) as a legacy for the local community.

Poets Corner Well, having run out of ideas this fortnight, I am thinking of inviting whoever is interested in doing a creative writing workshop. I am no expert but have done a few workshops before.

I have a few ideas on inciting the creative process, but hope for a co-operative effort such that others may provide ideas also.

Am will to facilitate this and provide some starting points. Children and adults all welcome. Alternatively, or in conjuction with writing, I have three children‘s stories which could be worked on a performance—getting the kids to play the characters of course.

In the hope of creating some new and fun writing, I am available on 0427 756 659.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, I would like to commend the Lake Grace Shire Garden staff on their presentation of the RSL gardens and surrounds for the ANZAC day ceremony. Several people commented on the newly painted

seat and the neatness of the gardens. It is therefore disappointing to see the vandalism on the median strip, when the staff put so much effort in to make our town attractive to tourists and locals.

With eight decades of butchering between them, the van Vliet Brothers not only have a wealth of experience in the meat trade but are only too happy to serve up a side of light laughs and conversation.

Although having gone into their apprenticeships as 14 year old school leavers, both Alex and Hank have spent time in other occupations with Alex taking a diversion into landscaping and truck driving for 15 years.

Before spending time with the cold cuts and the minced meat Dawn worked for CALM (now known as DEC) in Manjimup , propagating plants. During this time Dawn was helping Alex at the abattoir.

Alex and Dawn had a butchers shop in Dunsborough for 8 years before selling up to do the retirement thing. After discovering that dropping a line in the water wasn‘t enough for him, Alex went back to work.

At this stage Hank had been showing an interest in the Lake Grace butcher shop which had just come back on the market; he then invited Alex and Dawn along as partners.

Although they‘ve been at the shop for the past month, their feet have barely touched the ground as business has boomed, with the shop supplying meat to not only the Lake Grace community but outer lying areas.

Dawn‘s gourmet range has proved popular as has the convenience of the cooked chook!

All three have been overwhelmed with the response from the locals, not just in supporting the shop but also with welcoming them into the community.

Understanding Testosterone

When we think about testosterone most people are aware that it is the hormone that makes boys men. It is commonly thought that it starts to impact on boys at puberty and we can tell when it is happening by the physical changes like voice changing, facial hair, increased strength and sexual changes, girls become interesting etc!

The truth is that testosterone is having an impact on a boy‘s way before this and some research would suggest that even before birth it is influencing masculine attributes. It also has a significant impact on a boy‘s developing brain which differentiates the way males think, their problem solving capabilities, and their warrior attitudes.

Later in life we also hear of men being ―testosterone deficient‖ and in need of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) similar to women but a different hormone.

So why talk about this? Well most men take for granted that their testosterone is something that will look after itself, a normal bodily function which needs no thought or care, which to a point is true as long as we live a balanced lifestyle.

The problem is we often don‘t live a balanced life, and it can have devastating implications.

Testosterone also works like a fuel additive or booster for our body. During our work day we burn calories for energy which is boosted by testosterone. Often at the

end of a day‘s work a man needs to just sit and rest. This is to recharge testosterone. What we need to realize is that for men to replenish their testosterone levels they need adequate sleep and rest and there is no quick fix pill to replace rest.

So what are the implications of lack of rest? We all know them, reduced sex drive, bad temper or passive moods, plus lack of energy and reduced capacity to work a full day.

We are getting to the silly season, seeding! Please boys do not exceed your work capacity, which means you need adequate sleep, which for most men is about eight hours in every 24 hour period.

You may think you can get away with less and you will for a couple of days but all men will then hit the wall pretty hard. Interestingly women have much better capacity for working longer than men (they run on different hormones don‘t they!)

The testosterone issues are about much more than virility so boys don‘t neglect your rest, and ladies if they are a bit out of sorts encourage them to take a break.

The 24th of April saw the Grand opening of Landmark Lake Grace take place. The new building was looking at its all inspiring best for the big day and the anticipation around the town was intense. The night itself started well with 150 people making their way into town for the event. Staff had managed to persuade the General Manager of Landmark Australia, Graeme Jacobs to make the trip for this epic event and he was not disappointed.

The building was formally opened by Graeme Jacobs General with the cutting of the ribbon and a short speech of the importance of Lake Grace‘s branch and clients while touching on the future of Landmark and their goals. As the night continued a special presentation was made to Grant O‘Neill, celebrating 10 years of extraordinary service to Wesfarmers and Landmark. It then finished with a power point presentation of the buildings erection and services that Landmark provides. All that attended had a terrific night indulging on fine wine while feasting on high quality food. The staff at Landmark would like to thank all those who attended this great evening.

Preventing more than a quarter of a million trucks from being added to traffic on our roads is the focus of an industry campaign launched on Thursday 23 April 2009.

The campaign to upgrade the State‘s grain freight rail network was launched today by WestNet Rail, with the support of Cooperative Bulk Handling, Australian Railroad Group and the Western Australian Local Government Association.

WALGA President Cr Bill Mitchell said that without immediate action to upgrade the grain freight rail network, an additional 300,000 trucks per year would be added to the road network with a devastating effect on roads both in regional areas and those feeding into ports, as well as local communities.

―A single 600m train is the equivalent to 50 trucks on the road,‖ Cr Mitchell said.

―If the thousands of kilometres of rail lines currently in use are forced to close, local communities will bear the burden with grain laden trucks streaming through rural, regional and metropolitan towns.

―The increased traffic will have a marked effect on the condition of local roads, and ultimately impact upon

road safety and the amenity of local communities. ―When you consider there is already a shortfall of $112m per annum to preserve local roads in their current condition, additional traffic of this size without additional funding will be almost impossible for Local Governments to manage.‖

Cr Mitchell said that the same level of funds would need to be spent investing in road infrastructure to accommodate grain freight as would be spent upgrading the rail system.

―Given that an investment of $400m is required to accommodate grain freight on either rail or road, and the additional costs to road safety, greenhouse gas emissions and community amenity in pursuing freight on the road network, a failure to invest in rail will be incredibly short-sighted,‖ Cr Mitchell said.

―Industry is ready to commit $133m towards investment in maintaining the rail network, now it is up to both State and Federal Governments to step up and demonstrate their commitment to nation building infrastructure projects, as well as the safety and amenity of local communities."

Have Your Say About Future Health Services

The Wheatbelt Health MOU Group has engaged an independent consultant, Marguerite Tohl, Director, MMT Consultancy Services, to work with the Wheatbelt community to gather information about community needs, priorities and local solutions to inform decisions on future health service planning. MMT Consultancy Services is based in South Australia and the Director, Marguerite Tohl has extensive experience undertaking consultancies throughout Australia and in Papua New Guinea. The Wheatbelt Health MOU Group is a partnership between the Wheatbelt Development Commission, Wheatbelt Local Government Authorities, WA Country Health Services, Wheatbelt and the Wheatbelt General Practice Network. The Chairperson of the Wheatbelt Health MOU Steering Group, Tracy Meredith said that ―this is an important part of the Wheatbelt Health Planning Initiative Project and we encourage all residents across the Wheatbelt to participate in these community forums and have a say about the health services that are needed in the future‖ MMT Consultancy Services will be conducting the community consultations in twelve locations throughout

the Wheatbelt region. The meetings will be held in June in: Boddington, Beverley, Corrigin, Gingin, Jurien Bay, Koorda, Lake Grace, Merredin, Moora, Narrogin, Northam and Southern Cross. Two meetings are being arranged for each location; one during the day and the other in the evening to ensure that as many residents can attend as possible. Meetings will also be held with other stakeholders such as, local Government and service providers to gather as much information as possible. Ms Meredith added that ―the information gathered will then be used to inform decisions about future health planning across the Wheatbelt Health Region‖. A Community Booklet with information about the community and the current issues facing rural communities will be available prior to the consultations from your local Shire office. Advertisements will be placed in local papers in May to advise when they will be ready to collect. If you would like to find out more about the community consultations or would like to register your interest please contact Pip Shields at the Wheatbelt Development Commission on (08) 9881 5888.

Preventing more than a quarter of a million trucks from being added to traffic on our roads is the focus of an industry campaign launched recently. The campaign to upgrade the State‘s grain freight rail network was launched by WestNet Rail, with the support of Cooperative Bulk Handling, Australian Railroad Group and the Western Australian Local Government Association. ―The increased traffic will have a marked effect on the condition of local roads, and ultimately impact upon road safety and the amenity of local communities.

―When you consider there is already a shortfall of $112m per annum to preserve local roads in their current condition, additional traffic of this size without additional funding will be almost impossible for Local Governments to manage.‖ Cr Mitchell said that the same level of funds would need to be spent investing in road infrastructure to accommodate grain freight as would be spent upgrading the rail system. ―Industry is ready to commit $133m towards investment in maintaining the rail network, now it is up to both State and Federal Governments to step up and demonstrate their commitment to nation building infrastructure projects, as well as the safety and amenity of local communities." EXPLAINING THE APERTURE ILLUSION: Looking through a peephole can change the direction an object appears to move – a tilted rod going left to right seems to move downward at an angle when viewed through a hole (for a video clip go to www.sciam.com/mar2009/aperture). Dale Purves and his colleagues at Duke University think they know why. They asked volunteers to describe how they perceived the motion of moving lines seen through apertures. They also developed computer simulations of a virtual rod moving in three – dimensional space in which information regarding its direction was stripped out (via projection onto a two-dimensional surface). How the volunteers saw the movement nearly perfectly matched those generated by the flattened-out simulation, suggesting that images formed on our basically two-dimensional retinas do not convey aspects of three-dimensional motion. Hence, our perceptions of the directions of moving objects are mental constructs based on past experiences (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA). SEE- THROUGH WINGS NEED SPRINGY SCALES TO STAY DRY: The mystery of how butterflies with translucent wings stay dry has been solved by new high-resolution images-and the trick is bounciness. Butterfly wings are covered in a dense array of microscopic overlapping scales that give them their remarkable colours and also repel water. But the wings of some species have transparent or translucent panels where there are far fewer scales, with large gaps between them. As well as helping the insects recognise other members of their species, the panels confuse predators that do not recognise the translucent zone as part of the butterfly. The price the butterflies pay is reduced waterproofing, but now ecologists at Kyoto University in Japan have discovered how they survive. Pablo Goodwyn used electron microscopes to study the wings of the Japanese chestnut tiger butterfly, Parantica sita which lives for up to six months and migrates up to 1000 km’s. He found that scales shaped like flattened needles cover less than half of translucent areas. But because the scales tilt about 30º upwards from the wing surface, they act like springs, bouncing away water droplets that land on them. A similar butterfly from the same area as P. sita does not have springy scales, so water can wet its wings, it lives less than a month (Naturwissenschaften, DOI: 10.1007/s00114-009-351-z). T H E T R O U B L E W I T H DENOMINATORS: Fractions may be written as the ratio of two whole numbers, but that’s not how our brains process them. Instead it seems we respond to fractions directly, without processing whole numbers along the way. This suggests that kids, who often dread fractions, could be taught them more intuitively. Previous tests have shown that specific groups of neurons respond to different

whole numbers, with the number one altering the firing patterns of different neurons than the number three. Now Simon Jacob and Andreas Neider of the University of Tubingen in Germany have shown that we have fraction-specific neurons too. The pair scanned the brains of adults as they were shown a variety of different fractions – either as numerical ratios or in words. In both cases, specific groups of neurons altered their firing patterns. Crucially, control experiments showed that the volunteers weren’t responding first to whole numbers, and then calculating the ratio, but were reacting to the fraction itself. Fractions tend to be taught as ratios of whole numbers, but Nieder says this may not tap our neural machinery in the most constructive way, making fractions harder to grasp than they need to be (The Journal of Neuroscience, DOI: 10.1523/jneurosci.0651-09.2009). FEEL AT HOME WHEN YOU CRAWL OUT OF THE SEA: It’s always good to have a bit of help to cross into the unknown. Some of the earliest creatures to crawl out of the ocean onto the land half a billion years ago borrowed shell to carry a bit of the sea with them. This allowed them to survive in an otherwise hostile world, much like tanks of compressed air allow people to explore the deep ocean. Palaeontologist James Hagadorn has been studying fossilised tracks left in sandstone in central Wisconsin, dating back 490 to 510 million years. At the time, vast sandy flats fluctuated between wet and dry zones, thrusting organisms into new environments. Hagadorn had determined that several sets of tracks were made by Protichnites, an arthropod with many pairs of legs crawling across the sand and dragging its tail behind. But some of the tracks show odd markings along their left side. Hagadorn with Adolf Seilacher now report that these tracks are very similar to the distinctive ones left by a hermit crab carrying a coiled shell. They conclude that the unusual tracks belong to Protichnites that had partly inserted their tails into similar shells in order to carry them on land (Geology, vol 37, p 295). Hauling shells would have given the critters an advantage. Trapped moisture protected them from drying out and helped keep their gills moist. The shells also shielded the animals from harsh ultraviolet light and protected them from changing temperatures. Although the behaviour resembles that of a hermit crab, Hagadorn suspects these early explorers were the ancestors of a long-extinct group called sea scorpions, which had 6 to 13 pairs of legs. The tracks suggest the shells probably come from coiled molluscs, but other sources are possible. The hermit-like behaviour obviously had advantages, but the researchers say it is unclear how it came about Stories from the latest science magazines, New Scientist and Scientific American.

Playing a part in Art Art2Wear is Back! One of Lake Grace‘s most colourful stage events takes place this Saturday night at Lake Grace Hall. The fourth Art 2 Wear event takes the art off the wall to adorn the body in a spectacular wearable arts display. Art 2 Wear is about making, parading and displaying art you can wear. Lake Grace community members will show off their costumes in a dramat ic performance this Saturday night. The show features lots of creative energy, humour and imagination, set to the themes Contraptions, Recycled, Cyberpunk and Wild West. Presented by Lake Grace Artists‘ Group, the event brings out a fever of costume making in the community. Recycling bins and sewing collections are raided and inspiration found in farm sheds, hardware shops and supermarkets. Sheep nets, bread bags, CD‘s and Ringlock all become materials for local artists.

Art 2 Wear is part of Lake Grace Artists‘ Group‘s annual program that aims to bring a diverse range of cultural experiences to their community. This year‘s event, kicked started with professional costume making and performance workshops, promises to be bigger and better.

It‘s finally here – Art 2 Wear 2009 is on this Saturday at 7.30pm. So please get a group together and make a night of it. Come and support the Art Group and have a few laughs at the same time. Tickets ($5 adults, kids $2) can be bought around town or at the door on the night – and remember to bring a plate of supper to share afterwards. If you’re taking part in Art 2 Wear, whether it‘s making or wearing a costume, helping with set-up, etc, there are a few things you need to remember: If you need help to put the finishing touch on your

costume, then contact one of the art group members quick smart.

Then, make sure all your costume and props are in at the Artspace.

All entry forms need to be given to Michelle Slarke. This includes details about your costume, theme and who‘ll be wearing it.

If you have a specific song you want to use be sure you hand it in on CD.

We need plenty of helpers over the next few days to do things like cart the costumes and backdrops to the hall, set up the stages, arrange tables etc, so if you can lend a hand (no rain on the horizon, what else are you going to do?) then it would be greatly appreciated.

Just drop in at the Artspace or the hall and see what needs to be done. Or you can contact Michelle, 9890 2500, or Kerrie, 9865 4042, for a more specific task! And don‘t forget, when it‘s all over, our next monthly meeting will be on Tuesday May 19 at 9.30am at the Multi-Artspace.

Drivers causing vandalism have been running rife in Lake Grace recently, damaging the Stubbs Street median strip and the lake west of town. The town centre median strip sustained damage over the Easter period after a driver mounted and crossed it and then drove along the middle of the garden beds. In another incident, a motorist drove the length of the eastern median strip with one wheel in the garden bed. In both instances, the driver has destroyed reticulation equipment and plants. The incident is not an isolated one with Shire gardening staff regularly replacing reticulation equipment in the median strip due to vehicle damage. ―This is not only reckless driving but the costs of replacing reticulation equipment and plants are borne by our community‖, said Shire CEO Jim Fraser. ―It is also disappointing particularly for garden staff who invest their time and initiative into improving and maintaining the gardens.‖ The Shire of Lake Grace has also received complaints about damage to the main lake west of town. A rise in popularity of motorbikes has seen an increase of people riding on the lake and the surface is now marked with motorbike tracks, particularly near the causeway. The lake, which has become a landmark for Lake Grace, is a nationally significant wetland and part of the drainage system that becomes the Avon River. The lake is also an entry statement to our town.

magnitude +5.8. On Saturday 16th, Uranus rises at 2:11am. Uranus on Wednesday 20th will be 5 deg. south of the 24% Moon and on Friday 22nd rises at 1:49am and may be found with binoculars. NEPTUNE the grey green coloured planet in the Constellation of Capricornus rises in the east/south east at 12:17am on Saturday 9th just 7 minutes behind Jupiter. On Sunday 17th Neptune will be 3 deg. south of the 53% last quarter Moon with Jupiter and rises at 11:46pm. Neptune at magnitude +7.8 rises on Friday 22nd at 11:26pm. FOR Naked eye viewing: CRUX (the Southern Cross), will be high in the south at 9pm on the Sunday 17th. Just south of the cross is another small Constellation called Musca (the fly), which is made up by six small stars. THE EMU will now have come into easy viewing from a dark site this fortnight. Starting at the dark nebula between the two brightest stars in the cross, this is the head. At the start of the head you will notice a piece jutting out near the bright blue star, this is the beak. The eye is a magnitude +5 star in the middle between the two bright stars. From there follow the dark gas and dust lanes down through the two bright stars Beta (blue) and Alpha (yellow) Centauri and along to the Constellation of Circinus (the compass and Norma (the rule) which is the neck. Keeping with the dark lanes that get larger in Scorpius and Sagittarius, this represents the body and the short tail. You also should make out the legs underneath in a running position. Have you recognized the stars that make up the Constellation of Leo, to us it lies in an upside down and back to front position Now with it being in the north it is a good time to work it out on a clear night. The head faces west and resembles a back to front hand sickle or question mark which starts at the bright star Regulas. Looking to the east there are two stars fairly close together, Zosma in the north and Chort in the south represents the body to the rump. Then we move along to a single bright blue star called Denebola and this represents the tail. The legs you can make out down from Chort and down from the star Eta down past Regulas. Bright galaxies found in Leo are M65, M66 and NGC 3628 in some small stars in the back legs with M95, M96 and M106 below the middle of the body if you have a telescope. Looking to the north east you will notice a bright orange star which is called Arcturus, which is the brightest star in the Constellation of Bootes the Herdsaman. Many millions or billions of years ago this star resided in the middle of the galaxy and was kicked out when it drifted too close to a larger star. After drifting through space for this time it is heading towards and past our Solar System. For more information on anything astronomical, call or phone at anytime day or night. For viewing through the telescope or pointing out of Constellations and stars at my house is free at any time, and if out of town it may be arranged at your place.

Lake Grace CWA would like to say thank you to all groups for continued support of this wonderful service to our Senior Citizens.

The Nationals WA have officially launched their no daylight saving campaign in Kings Park recently, unveiling ‗no‘ t-shirts, badges and a 30 second television commercial to be run on regional stations in the lead up to the referendum. State President Colin Holt said The Nationals message was simple and to the point and reflected the feedback the Party had received from across the State. ―We are telling people to say no to politicians who ignore the voting public, say no to dark mornings, say no to long hot evenings and no to daylight saving until the end of March,‖ he said. Speaking at the launch, Mr Holt said The Nationals were delivering on the promise to campaign against the introduction of daylight saving in the lead up to the State election. ―We are responding to grassroots members who have lobbied the Party to promote the ‗no‘ campaign,‖ he said. ―It‘s ironic that it was our branch members in Kalgoorlie, the home of ‗yes‘ campaigner Matt Birney, who moved a motion to campaign against daylight saving. ―We‘re not a slick mouthpiece for big business; we represent ordinary families, workers and business owners in regional Western Australia who for various different and valid reasons don‘t support daylight saving.‖ Mr Holt said the reasons people dislike daylight saving were just as valid as those being spruiked by those that like it. ―For every argument made by a family for daylight saving I can find one against,‖ he said. ―For every person who votes ‗yes‘ for a more active and leisurely lifestyle in the early evening I can find one who will vote ‗no‘ because they enjoy early morning leisure and activities. ―For every small business reliant on suppliers in the eastern states, there would be one that has used the time difference to their advantage.‖ Hon Wendy Duncan MLC, also at the launch, highlighted The Nationals long term commitment to the anti-daylight saving campaign and spoke of the environmental implications, particularly in relation to

increased energy use during the daylight saving period. ―The Nationals WA started campaigning against daylight saving in March 2008 with a television campaign and our ‗tired of feeling tired‘ t-shirt,‖ Ms Duncan said. ―We collected over 66,000 signatures from people across the State for a petition to prevent the introduction of the daylight saving legislation, and many of these people were from the Perth metropolitan area.‖ Ms Duncan also said she‘d been informed Synergy had released information that indicated an increase in electricity consumption during the three year trial period, presumably due to the increased use of air conditioners. ―Families who are at home by 4.00pm (DLST) are experiencing the heat of the sun at 3.00pm, and their only option is to use air conditioning at a time when business demand is also at its highest. ―The Fremantle Doctor may well assist in the Perth metropolitan area, but it certainly doesn‘t reach the homes of people living in regional Western Australia.‖

On Thursday 9 April 2009, the Year 1‘s performed their assembly. The song that they performed was called ‗A Family is a Family‘ by Skip West. The students followed the song by telling the audience about their favourite thing to do with their families. This song was chosen for the assembly because during Term One the Year 1 students learnt that there are many different types of families. They learnt that some families are similar to their own and some are different. The Year One‘s did a wonderful job to perform and learn all of their lines in Term One of Year One. They all spoke very clearly and I was very proud of them. Amanda Poots - Year 1 Teacher

The State Government is urging Western Australians to consider becoming a foster carer this Mother‘s Day. The Government had previously launched a recruitment campaign to urgently find up to 250 foster carers across Western Australia because the number of children in care continued to rise by approximately 12 per cent a year. Child Protection Minister Robyn McSweeney said there were already more than 3,000 children in the care of the State and the number was expected to increase to about 4,000 by 2011. ―Mother‘s Day really highlights for me the importance of a caring family environment. It is very sad that not all children in Western Australia are afforded that, and we need the help of everyday people to provide care for some of these vulnerable children,‖ Mrs McSweeney said. ―On this Mother‘s Day when parents cuddle their children I would ask they think about all the kids in need of the same love and attention.‖ A three-month electronic and press campaign

launched recently aimed to attract new foster carers for WA‘s most at-risk children. Since the start of the campaign, the department had received almost 500 calls from people wanting to know more about foster care. ―We urgently need more foster carers to provide safe and loving homes for the growing number of children and young people who are unable to live with their own families,‖ the Minister said. ―The number of children coming into our care has doubled in the past 10 years and, on average, two to three neglected or abused children are removed from their homes every day. ―These are disturbing figures and while the Government is committed to tackling the reasons behind this, which include rising mental health and drug and alcohol problems in the community, we need the help of everyday people to care for these children. ―There are 905 general foster carers (non-relative carers) registered with the Department for Child Protection. These carers do an outstanding job.

Farmsafe WA Alliance encourages farmers to be prepared for seeding and to consider safety precautions before seeding begins.

Farm safety issues to consider during this time include: The condition and serviceability of equipment and

plant (particularly tractors) Ensuring adequate lighting of sheds and

workshops to allow work to be done safely Non-slip surfaces to prevent falls Keeping control of fatigue, due to the long hours

likely to be worked during seeding Ensuring satisfactory levels of competence,

adequate training and safety inductions of all workers hired

Ensuring that the presence of children is reduced and/or strictly controlled, as often farms are homes and workplaces in one.

It is also vital to conduct a general safety check of the farm including a check of hazards such as rollover protection, steps and handrails, seatbelts, guarding of exposed and moving parts including power take-offs.

Also check brakes, tyres, lighting etc. on a daily basis.. A work systems check is also important, including issues such as ‗no passengers‘; ‗bystanders must be clear‘, safe work procedure in case of boggy or similar treacherous terrain; appropriate risk controls such as wide wheel tracks or traveling in low gear; and

functioning communications gear.

Road safety is also another significant issue that Farmsafe WA Alliance are encouraging farmers to be mindful of. It is particularly important to be aware of fatigue issues related to working long hours during seeding and then getting behind the wheel of a car.

If you are driving, you should get off the road if you: are yawning; are blinking more than usual; are having trouble keeping your head up; notice your eyes closing for a moment or going

out of focus; or forget driving the last few kilometres.

Early danger signs of fatigue include: wandering thoughts; missing a gear, road sign or exit; slowing unintentionally; and braking too late.

After driving for long periods, you should stop for a break or coffee, swap drivers where possible or stop to have a short sleep. Remember to get plenty of rest the night before a long trip.

For more information and farm safety checklists visit www.farmsafe.wa.org and www.farmsafe.org.au or contact Farmsafe WA Alliance on (08) 9359 4118.

Humour Roulette A lady is having a bad day at the roulette tables in Las Vegas. She's down to her last $50. Exasperated, she exclaims, "What rotten luck! What in the world should I do now?" A man standing next to her, trying to calm her down, suggests, "I don't know. Why don't you play your age?" Then he walked away. Moments later, his attention is grabbed by a great commotion at the roulette table. Maybe, she won! He rushes back to the table and pushes his way through the crowd. The lady is lying limp on the floor, with the table operator kneeling over her. The man is stunned. He asks, "What happened? Is she alright?" The roulette wheel operator replied, "I don't know. She put all her money on 29. When 36 came up, she just fainted!" Great Steaks A guy had told all of his friends about the great steak he'd eaten downtown the day before. A group of them decided to head down and see if it was really as large and delicious as he was making it out to be. The group was seated in the back of the restaurant. After looking over the menu, they ordered and waited, hungrily, for their large, delicious, gigantic steaks. To their collective disappointment, the waiter brought out some of the smallest steaks they'd ever seen.

"Now see here," the very embarrassed guy said to the waiter. "Yesterday, when I came down here you served me a big, juicy steak. Today, though, when I have my friends with me, you serve tiny steaks! What is the meaning of this?" "Yes, sir," replied the waiter, "yesterday you were sitting by the window." Reading of the Will The relatives of the family's rich dowager gathered for the reading of her will after her long awaited death. ―Being of sound mind,‖ read the lawyer, ―I spent every last cent before I died.‖ Ten Commandments A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honor thy father and thy mother," she asked "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat one little boy answered, "Thou shall not kill." Bucket O' Chicken One day a State Trooper was pulling off an expressway near Chicago. When he turned onto the street at the end of the ramp, he noticed someone at a chicken place getting into his car. The driver placed the bucket of chicken on top of his car, got in and drove off with the bucket still on top of his car.

The Lake Grace Pingrup Junior netballers have started the season in flying form with two wins from two games. Despite losing six players from last year's premiership team the new crop of juniors, many of whom have worked their way through the netta ranks, have formed a strong unit and look like being a powerful force in the junior competition. Our first game was against the young Nyabing combination with Lake Grace leading at every change to record a decisive 28-7 goal win, getting the season off to a promising start. The girls combined well across the court and linked beautifully from defence into attack, displaying some impressive passages of play on their way to victory. Laura Saunders took out the coach's award for her dogged four-quarter effort, ferocious ball contesting and fabulous leading into spaces. Well Done Laura and keep up the great work! Following the bye against Jerramungup it was back to work against ladder-leaders Boxwood Hill. The girls began strongly, feeding well into the cirlce and creating turnovers in defence to go into the half-time break witn a handy 21-7 goal lead.

In warm conditions they kept up the pressure and pace to extend their lead, with strong passing and decisive leads helping the score along and opening up an 18 goal break going into the final quarter. Confident that the team could hold onto their lead it was time for some positional changes...but Boxwood had the same idea, throwing their two tall timbers into goals! Despite the enormous pressure newcomers Jordy Medlen and Chloe Robertson found themselves under in defence they kept their heads held high and worked their hearts out right till the final whistle. Although Boxwood outscored Lake Grace in the final quarter we held on to post a five goal win...phew! The coach's award went to Beth Curtin who was thrown in at the deep end in the goal circle and grew in confidence as the game progressed, combining well with our goal attacks and feeders. Great effort, Beth and keep putting up those goals at home!!! This week it's down to Gnowangerup for some indoor action...let's hope we can continue the winning run!

Lake Grace v Jerramungup This was our first match as we had a forfeit from Nyabing the previous week. We matched up fairly even although we probably had a few more experienced grade sixes than they did. Peter Downey rucked well and the on-ballers in Jack Trevenen and Liam Baker kept driving the ball into the forward line. First gamers, Zhane Robertson and brad O‘Neill played very well and had a couple of kicks by quarter time. Into the second quarter we had a slight breeze behind us and moved the ball well into the forward line. With everyone getting used to new positions it was scrappy near goals but by half time we had a three goal lead. We were lending Jerry a player to even up the teams and rotating these each quarter. Well done to the boys who went over and played as they all got possessions playing for the opposition which isn‘t easy. Third quarter was a good solid performance with Bailey McGlinn giving a couple of good bursts with the ball. Mitchell Smith did a sterling job as full back and Captain Travers Wright and Brady Carruthers were clearing the ball well. The final quarter was more of the same with us slightly on top around the ground and running out winners by three or four goals. The Morton boys award for a four quarter effort went to Zhane Robertson.

Lake Grave vs Boxwood Hills The morning before this game I was reflecting back on last years second semi and grand final trying to think who would be missing from Boxwood‘s team. The two big fellas (Baum and Murdoch) would be gone but otherwise the rest would probably still be there, and the ‗rest‘ played well as a team last year. It doesn‘t happen very often, but I was right. Boxwood came out to play and right from the start were intent to apply pressure to us when we had the ball, but applied shepherds and bumps to protect their ball carrier. A good close hard fought game ensued with Boxwood missing some shots on goal which could have blown the margin out a bit. Brady Carruthers was giving us run and a good long kick from half back flank and Liam, Jack and Angus worked hard through the centre. We had a few first gamers for us in Joe Fonda, Jack Knight, Cent Amores and Jock Harrington who all got involved in the game and got a few touches. Jock played out of full back so he had a real baptism of fire. The whole team fought on well and never gave up which was great. This loss should sharpen things up at training. Better players on the day were Zhane Robertson, Brady Carruthers, Brock Bowron and Peter Downey. The Morton boys awards went to Travers Wright for a sweepers roll at centre half back and to Jock Harrington who hardly put a foot wrong at full back.

So the trooper decides to pull him over and perform a community service by giving the driver his chicken. He pulled him over, walked up to the car, pulled the bucket off the roof and offered it to the driver. The driver looks at the trooper and says, "No thanks, I just bought some." Movie Theater ―Pardon me, lady", said the man trying to get back to his seat in the darkened movie theater, "but did I step on your toes a few minutes ago?" "You certainly did!!", said the woman in the aisle seat. "Good, then I'm in the right row!" the man said as he went back to his seat. Another Talented Pet There was a man who traveled all around the world. Every city he stopped in he would buy something for his mother and send it to her. On one such stop he found a parrot that spoke thirty

different languages. He immediately bought it and sent it home to his mother. A few days later he calls his mother. "Did you like the parrot?" he asked her. "Oh yes," she replied. "It was delicious." "WHAT!" the man cried. "You ate it! That parrot wasn't for you to eat! It spoke thirty languages!" The mother paused for a moment and then said, "So why didn't he say something?" Loud, Mad or Sad? The psychology instructor had just finished a lecture on mental health and was giving an oral test. Speaking specifically about manic depression, she asked, "How would you diagnose a patient who walks back and forth screaming at the top of his lungs one minute, then sits in a chair weeping uncontrollably the next?" A young man in the rear raised his hand and answered, "A basketball coach?"

Lake Grace Golf Notes On the 26th of April we had our first individual event of the year – a stableford sponsored by the team at Greenline Ag.

In sunny conditions we had 19 hit off with many good scores being recorded for the first event of the year. However in the men‘s competition it was Chad Stanton who managed to come home with the win on 42 points (including 8 pars and a birdie) closely followed by Alex Reeves on 41 points. Special mention to Chris Carruthers who had 43 points (11 pars and 2 birdies) and Scott Strevett 35 points who both made their return to golf and played magnificently.

In the ladies event it was Michelle Lay who finished on top with 39 points (including a sensational birdy on the par 4 12th – there you go Michelle I told you I‘d mention it) from Stephanie Lay on 38 points. Tania Bray and Helen Hunt also played well scoring in the 30‘s with Rebecca Reeves not far behind.

Just a reminder to Reevo that the competition is only an 18 hole event – well we‘re assuming he played 27 holes given the time he arrived back at the clubhouse!

Novelties – NTP 4 Westpac – Rebecca Reeves, NTP 6 Tyrepower – Peter Lay, NTP 15 LG Hotel Chris Carruthers, NTP 18 CSBP – Graham Milton, Placement 12 Rosie‘s – Frisky, LP 9 – Graham Milton. Thanks again to Greenline Ag.

Last Sunday it was the first of our par events – sponsored by Bomb and Rachel Pelham. They have been long time sponsors of the Golf Club and we greatly appreciate their sponsorship.

The Men‘s event produced a shock winner – Kevin Eggers (mind you the main prize has been withheld subject to Kevin successfully passing his drug test). In the stableford event the week before he managed a score of only 26 and would have started at around 100/1 to win this weeks comp. But Kevin likes defying the odds and came home with a plus 10 to beat Marcus Owen by 3. Marcus‘s plus 7 was also an excellent score and would have won on most other days but unfortunately for him Kevin put in a blinder. Derek Stanton also played well to finish on plus 6. Following the event a new local rule was quickly voted on – Kevin

is now banned from a having gopher on the course!

In the ladies event Helen Hunt outplayed the rest of the ladies (apparently including a new member named Justine) to finish on plus 6. Before the round started Michelle Lay was aiming to win the runners-up prize and managed to achieve this with a solid plus 2. Michelle has been looking for a new golf drinking partner and managed to find one in Terri – however I‘m not sure it actually helped her golf.

Novelties sponsored by Bomb and Rachel Pelham – Ladies LD 10 – Michelle Lay, Men‘s LD 3 – Kevin Eggers, Men‘s best 2nd Shot 8 – Kevin Eggers.

Weekly novelties - NTP 4 Westpac – Darren Clifford, NTP 6 Tyrepower – Marcus Owen (birdy), NTP 15 LG Hotel Murray Stanton, NTP 18 CSBP – Rex Walker, Placement 12 Rosie‘s – Kevin Eggers, LP 9 – Rex Walker.

Next week we have an Irish Stableford sponsored by the men‘s and ladies captain. It will be a team event so if you are thinking about playing golf this year this week would be a great week to start.

Round 1 Lake Grace vs. Nyabing A Grade: The A Grade girls got the season off to a great start winning, 31 to 15. This was a great effort from the girls as some of the team has changed since their premiership win last season. Best Player: Lauren West. Coaches Award: Laura Hutton-Storer. B Grade: The B Grade girls had a bye this week. Thank you to Greenline Ag for sponsoring the awards this week. Round 2 Jerramungup vs. Lake Grace A Grade: This week the girls had a hard fought game in the grand final rematch. The girls were down in the first quarter but came back to win, 37 to 31. Best Player: Gabbie Trevenen. Coaches Award: Tameka Knill. B Grade: The girls tried really hard in their first game of the season but unfortunately they went down to Jerramungup, 17 to 51. Best Player: Jackie McGlinn. Coaches Award: Sarah Graves. Thank you to the Lake Grace/Pingrup Football Club for sponsoring the awards this week. Round 3 Lake Grace vs. Boxwood Hills A Grade: This week the girls had a well fought and very close game. Lake Grace led until the last quarter when

Boxwood took control of the game. The girls clawed back four goals in the last two minutes however, to win the game by one goal! The final score was 32 to 31. Best Player: Laura Hutton-Storer. Coaches Award: Darya Bishop. B Grade: The girls had a great game this week with some of the team trying out new positions. Unfortunately Boxwood was too strong and they won, 40 to 28. Hello Everyone, Been another busy week. I have been making an Art2Wear costume using circular needles and orange tape with help from Tania. I have finished a Richmond knee rug in black and yellow and two more cane baskets decorated with material and flowers and bows. I have been walking and enjoying the sunny days. Doing more maths and spelling and hope to see you at the Art2Wear Parade on Saturday night at 7pm. Till next time, Sheryl.

Yes! The 2009 gym season has started again! Noise levels were high on Monday afternoon when our extremely excited gymnasts converged on the shire hall for the first session of the year. Due to ART2Wear being on this weekend, we only had our more manageable equipment out, but I can promise everyone that next Monday 11th, we will have all our equipment out and ready to be used! So, to all our parents, we will be setting up the gym equipment on Sunday 10th, at 2pm, and we would love all the help we can get.

This year we are lucky to have 5 coaches, Wendy O‘Neill (WG, MG), Kate Zweck (Kindergym, WG), Diedre Trevenan (WG), Lisa Pearce (WG) and Genni Curtin (WG). Congratulations to Wendy for achieving her Men‘s Gymnastics, (MG), accreditation and Genni Curtin for achieving her women‘s gymnastics, (WG), accreditation. All our coaches attended the Gym WA updating course in Newdegate in March, so a big thankyou to all

coaches for attending t h i s w e e k e n d . Hopefully we‘ll be able to bring some new ideas and teaching methods into our lessons. This year the club is very lucky to have Wendy O‘Neill as President, Anke Stoffberg as Treasurer , Tracy Fisher as Secretary, Kate Zweck as Head C o a c h , T a n i a Spencer as Uniform Officer and Di Garard as Club 10 Officer. Thank you very much to those ladies for taking on these positions. It is still not too late to

join the gym club, but Monday 11th is our last day for registration, so make sure you contact either Wendy (9864 9040) or Kate Zweck (9871 9047) if you are unable to be at gym on Monday. Don‘t forget that kindergym starts on Monday 11th, 1.30pm at the hall.

Round 2-Lake Grace/Pingrup vs Jerramungup The past two weeks have been tough for the much loved Bombers with three losses in a row. After having to travel the long road down to Jerramungup in order to take on the reigning premiers, the game was fast flowing and with the Bombers taking the lead kicking into the breeze in the first quarter, things were looking terrific. Unfortunately skills and unforgivable mistakes let the team down and after half time the Eagles ran away with the game. Best players were Marcus ‗Praying mantis‘ Trevenen who was incredible running off the wing. While the league team came away with a loss the reserves showed that they are a force to be reckoned by smashing Jerry by 74 points. ‗Killer‘ Kyren Moore was terrific at centre half forward while young talent ‗Mat the snake‘ Macca was slippery across the ground, showing skill and class that he could have only got from his mother as his father has none of these qualities. Round 3-Lake Grace/Pingrup vs Boxwood Hills Boxwood was the Bombers chance to redeem themselves. Playing at the house of pain, the players had put the work in during the week and come game day the boys were ready to play. The game itself was a shoot out with the first half being goal for goal. ‗Praying Mantis‘ Trevenen was again firing on the wing, finding good space across the ground and taking grabs Gary Ablett senior would be proud of. ‗Sledgehammer‘ Tristan Storer again kicked a bag of 5 goals up forward, while ‗Deadly‘ Damien Trevenen was back to his all inspiring best running off the back flank. Unfortunately it wasn‘t enough and Boxwood came away with a 27 point victory. ‗Praying Mantis‘ Marcus Trevenen won best on ground while the ‗Janitor‘, Alex Duckworth cleaned up, getting second best. On a final note there was some legal action taken throughout the week by Damon Pelham regarding his nickname; we have therefore revised his name. Damo will no longer be known as the Pack Rat, we now refer to him as Meerkat Pelham. PAST PLAYERS- Where are they now! Merv Spurr No one is sure exactly what has happened to Merv, there are many rumours spreading the nation on his where-abouts. It has been said that Merv joined a cult in 2006 where he has fathered dozens of children and believes that there is only one God, Peter Hudson. Others say that Merv has grown a beard, changed his name to Mervhumad Spurrid and moved to Bali to fulfil his lifelong dream of becoming a Taxi driver. There is also talk that Merv never left Lake Grace and has continued to work under the radar at Tyre Power only venturing as far as his deadly treadly will allow him,

unless he can sponge a lift. People have reported seeing Merv hitch hiking to Perth. To the right we have digitally enhanced a photo of Merv to recreate what Merv would look like today.

Bob Spurr Bob left Lake Grace late in 2008 to travel the country with his now fiancée Tanya. Since then Bob has seen most of the country in his Toyota Landcruiser which has been nicknamed the Love Machine. Bob and Tanya have finally settled in a small coastal town in the eastern states called Summer Bay where Bob has managed to snatch a job on the hit show Home & Away replacing Ray Meagher as Alf Stewart. He is making his first appearance in 3 weeks time. Bob still calls Rocking Ronnie Mophet every Saturday night to brag about his football hey days. Lake Grace Junior Golf Junior golf commenced a new season on the 26th April under ideal conditions with a small but enthusiastic group of juniors.

Although the course is a little dry some fairly good golf was played all the same, Our winners of the ambrose were Reece Lay and partner Kendrick Harvey, well played guys.

The ever popular Rhynie award is up and running again and the winner was Adam Hunt, pays to get up there and spin the wheel yourself.

Now the school holidays are over we should be back into full swing.

And back in full swing we definitely were. Holidays are over and we‘ve had a great influx of new golfers arrive on the scene.

A very warm welcome to Travis and Ethan Hutter, Emily and Sophie Parker, John Berdin, Ben Weaver and Kyra Walker. Great to see some new faces, hopefully your time with us will be an enjoyable one.

Thank you once again to Mark and Trish Cameron who have agreed to another year as our major sponsor.

Very much appreciated. Thanks also to John and Jeanette Bennett for the popular Rhynie awards.

Our winners this week were Jamie Bell and Reece Lay, the Rhynie award went to Caitlyn Trawinski.

Look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday at 9:30am.

Lake Grace Pingrup Junior Hockey 25th April – V’s Jerramungup The final score of 3-0 down was not a great reflection of the game. We had a great 1st half with most of the play in our attacking half. The second half saw a little more congestion through the centre. It was great to see the team keep trying and not giving up.

May 2nd – at home V’s Boxwood Hills Boxwood also has an abundance of eager players so it was decided to play Grades 5 – 7 in the Junior game, and with the Minkey, the game covered most of the field and played a team from grade 4 and below. Thus giving our younger players some useful game time.

With the Junior games we went down 4-0. A goal was made, though with the new rules it wasn‘t paid as it was hit directly into the ―D‖.

A huge thank you to our new weekly sponsor donating a small prize to two players each week, ―Best on Ground‖ and ―A Top Effort‖. So thank you very much to Consultag for your valuable contribution. Award winners to date are: 18-04-09 Peter Downey & Juanita O‘Neill 25-04-09 Mitchell Smith & Liam Baker 02-05-09 Angus Hunt & Carrie Taylor

One of the main themes of the Communities in Control Conference 2009, to be held in Melbourne on June 15 & 16, will be how to meet the many challenges that are currently being faced by community organisations across Australia.

As we all reel from the shock of calamities from bushfires to floods to droughts to global economic turmoil, community organisations are becoming more important than ever, providing a safety net, giving people a place to heal, providing help, support, hope, empathy and light relief.

The volunteers that sustain these great community groups need support.

With this in mind, Our Community would like to make you aware of a great initiative by BP Australia, "Vouchers for Volunteers" - which will open on Monday, April 27. Through this scheme BP will be providing $250,000 in fuel vouchers to volunteers assisting not-for-profit organisations.

For further information on this offer, please go to www.talkstoppedlongago.com.au/v4v_home.html

On Saturday 25th April we played Jerramungup at Jerramungup. The game went out hard and fast, with Jerramungup proving to be a strong side. Jerramungup scored 5 with us only being able to goal 1. Our goalie, Renae Landford played a purler with enthusiasm, determination and a lot of skill that wasn't reflected through the score line. Nat O'Neill never gave up, being very solid in defense! Which lead to our awards - Best Player Renae Langford (sponsored by Lake Grace / Ping Football club) Coached award Nat O'Neill (sponsored by Lakeway Hair Salon)

On Saturday 2nd May we played Boxwood Hills at home. Another hot day, we thought that hockey was a winter sport!?! Boxwood played a strong game and defeated us 4-0. Best player was well deserved by Nat O'Neill who did a fantastic job at fullback. It was great to see the number of supporters at hockey. We really appreciate your support. This week we travel to Gnowangerup Good luck to the other sports! Best Player Nat O'Neill (Sponsored by United Farmers) Coaches Award Leanne Bull (sponsored by Lakeway Hair Salon).

Pony Club Well, Pony Club has started the season energetically, and there are some enthusiastic

young riders out there. First Rally On March 28 we had our first rally, and it was super. Many thanks to Nicole for coaching the less experienced group. They had a great day going over their skills and regaining confidence after a long break without riding. The mums and nannas got a bit of exercise, and fun was had by all. Thanks also to Jane for coaching the more advanced group. She had quite a few riders in her class and did a great job accommodating them. The surprise twist was a game of cushion polo for the more confident riders after the afternoon session was over, and it was very entertaining for both riders and spectators. We have some budding polocrosse players waiting in the wings! Riding School Following hot on the heels of our rally was the annual Riding School. This ran from April 13-16 and was, once again, a huge success. This year we again had over 60 riders, including a large group of adults. Thanks once again to Jane Bushby for masterminding the whole event, and to her band of efficient helpers who made it all possible. Coaches Judy Rose, Debbie Spencer, Alana Chircop, Jo Parker and Roxie Taylor maintained a rigorous schedule of lessons for 4 days, with Roxie even staying to participate in the gymkhana on Friday April 17. We thank them all very much for their time and care, and hope they are all keen to return. The quality of our coaches is what keeps people coming back each year.

Many thanks to the Chappell and Dunham families for allowing us the use of their caravans for coach‘s accommodation – comfort is an important factor that keeps the coaches coming back! Our quiz night on Tuesday night was ably run by Nicole

Argent and Anna Taylor. They did a great job and it was a fun night, if not very noisy at times! Wednesday night saw our club visited by many non-riding family members, and we were happy to have the Slarke family as our guests to show our appreciation for the fantastic facilities that they provide to us each year, not only for Riding School but for the whole Pony Club season. Thursday saw the end of lessons and the Mini Gymkhana for the less experienced riders. It was a great fun afternoon, with all riders winning a ribbon for their great performances, showing that they listened hard and learnt well in their lessons.

Friday April 17 saw the annual Riding School Gymkhana, and it was great to see all children competing. Lots of fun was had by all in a festive and safe environment, and congratualtions go to all of those who won trophies or ribbons on the day. Many thanks to all officials and trophy donors who were involved with the gymkhana – it was a busy but exciting day! Once again thanks to anyone who helped towards the execution of the riding school. Helpers are truly too numerous to mention, but we are a small club and so depend on a small group to make it all happen. You know who you are, and thank you! There will be a Riding School debrief meeting coming up in the next couple of weeks, so watch your e-mails for a date. May Rally There will be no Pony Club held at Lake Grace this month, but we encourage everyone to support Newdegate with their May rally. They have a rally scheduled this Sunday, May 10, so if you wish to attend please contact Fanny McDonald.

Lake Grace Riding School can best be described as horse people joining together in a feast of learning and friendship. This year 65 riders from 6 pony clubs descended on our pony club grounds. In an afternoon the place resembled a busy caravan park as parents worked feverishly to set up home. Riders carefully chose a yard and did what it took to make comfortable their ―best friend‖. With 5 coaches the grounds were full of arenas and jump courses, once again Kim and Michelle Slarke graciously allow the event to leak out into a near by ram paddock. By 8.30 Monday morning the place was a buzz with instructors coaching the first group for the day. Often this time slot can provide the intrepid camera fanatic with the shot of a lifetime involving some poor horse and rider parting company. While there was much talk the evening before of the probability, in an adult class, despite the odd rodeo audition the hard ground proved incentive enough for everyone to keep their seat in the saddle. Tuesday followed hot on the heels of Monday coaches coached and riders rode. That night Nicole Argent and Anna Taylor combined their talents and put on an evenly contested fantastic quiz night. Wednesday was business as usual riders were gaining confidence, coaches voices were going AWOL and our equine friends were getting tired. That night Donna Hendry and helpers put on a sumptuous tea of hot lamb rolls. Some stayed up and played up. And soon it was Thursday; once morning lessons were

over our newer riders prettied up their ponies and participated in the mini gymkhana finishing with much cheering, a ribbon and lots of smiles. We said a grateful farewell to some of our hard working coaches and set to work preparing the grounds for our final day. Gymkhana day was warm early. Isn‘t it supposed to cool down in April? About 40 riders took part. Ribbons of all colours soon decorated sweaty necks, both human and equine. Thanks to all our volunteers Julie Newman judged Hacking, Sonja Crute and Naomi Briggs judged jumping, Theresa Wigg and Cam Bushby timed Keyhole and Barrel. Katherine McCracken, Dorothy Henderson, Emily Taylor ran the Games, Jane Bushby and Maria Taylor ran Handy Pony, co-ordinator/scorer Sheridan Fyfe and canteen co-ordinator Donna Hendry. A special thanks to the hard working folk that packed away after gymkhana. Well done to all competitors and thankyou to all the trophy donors. Our Pony Club thanks the shire for mowing the grounds and the Oliver family for supplying our hay. We appreciate everyone who helped out during the week and at the busy bees the members (old and new) from Newdegate and Lake Grace Pony Clubs without you and your enthusiasm this week quite simply couldn‘t run. Till next year may the Horse be with you.

Riding School 2009

―We need full time carers, as well as people who can provide occasional and specialised care for children with complex needs.‖ Mrs McSweeney said anyone who could provide a stable and supportive home environment for a child could become a foster carer. ―There is a critical shortage of foster carers because many people are not sure of what is involved, or do not understand how rewarding the experience can be,‖ she said. ―Foster carers can be male or female, single or couples, have children of their own or not, working full-time or part-time, or be retired. What is important is that they can offer a caring home for a child who

has been neglected or hurt by a parent and who is in desperate need of love and protection.‖ The Minister said a telephone hotline had been set up by the Department for Child Protection for interested people and the department‘s website contained a downloadable information pack about fostering. ―Whether you can spare just a few hours or a lifetime, we want to hear from you,‖ she said. For more information ring the foster care hotline on 1800 024 453 or visit the department‘s website at http://www.childprotection.wa.gov.au
