8- BUDDHISM, JAIbIISM AND CAMPAMTAR Not all the poets of the Bhakti movement evince keen interest in denouncing Jainism and Buddhism. Of the x~v~rs only Tirumalicai and To?;ara;ippoti mount a scathing attack reminiscent of Campantar's in word and spirit, in not more than three or four poems each. Macikkavzoakar, though reported to have been involved in wordy duels with Buddhist leaders, does not care to refer to them in "TiruocQal", which, according to a legend, is supposed to rebut the Buddhist attacks on Lord Siva and Saivism. Appar expresses his profound apologies for having been misled by the Jains. But in the rest of Bhakti literature, there is nothing like Campantar's sustained pillorying of the two groups. That this censure is one of the most pronounced features of his poetry seems to have attracted the attention of SFkkiAKr, who, while mentioning the birth of the saint, refers to the urgent need to wipe out the two religions which had crippled the faith in Saivism: The blameless, gentle-hearted Civapxta Irutayar was pained to notice that the devotees of Siva were not approached by many for enlightenment because the ancient Vedic faith was yielding
